#1 Multiple outlets have confirmed an arrest in connection with Saturday's attempted car bombing in New York's Times Square.

According to NBC, the man's name is Shahzad Faisal, a 30-year-old U.S. citizen of Pakistani descent. The Connecticut native was reportedly arrested in Long Island.

CNN and the New York Times are also reporting that an arrest was made, either late Monday evening or early Tuesday Morning. CNN says he was arrested at JFK International Airport, while the New York Times reports that he was arrested at "New York-area airport," apparently attempting to flee.

This is a developing story. More information will be posted here as it becomes available.

Apparently he spent five months there, according to various articles I saw -- granted, all coming from the same announcement, since the wording never changed, just as every report of the man taking off his shirt in the alley had him placing it furtively in his briefcase.

#12 In other news:
Confidential sources reveal a sense of disappointment on multiple levels within the Administration's closest inner circle. "They thought they really had it going their way, (when) the video showed the white guy. They really wanted to 'put it on the right-wing nutjobs, like the militia ones arrested in Detroit".
Other unconfirmed reports state that the President was wandering the halls of the WH in the middle of the night muttering, "Please don't let him be a Muslim...please don't let him be a muslim...".
"Don't worry, Mr. President...the media's on our side", consoled his Chief of Staff.

#16 The Washington Post calls him Faisal Shahzad.

Shahzad has family links to the southern port city of Karachi, according to Dawn television, an English-language station in Pakistan. Shahzad flew to Karachi in July 2009 on Emirates, the Dubai-based international airline of the United Arab Emirates, and returned to the U.S. via the same airline on August 5, the station said, citing unnamed sources. Shahzad recently returned from a five-month trip to Pakistan, a government official said.

ABC News claims Mr. Shahzad spent five months in Peshawar before returning to the U.S. to purchase the Pathfinder.

Politico reports the FBI used the number of a disposable cell phone used to contact the car seller to find our miscreant. So much for the privacy of the throw-away phone. TV dramas will never be the same.

#18 News reports are saying he acted alone. I say BS. How many of these guys really act alone? He travelled to Paki-wakistan and stayed for several months. They had Hassan pegged as a lone sudden jihad case but when it was all said and done, he had links to the imam in Yemen.

Another question, he was 30 years old. I thought the immigration process was a long drawn out process that took years. Something doesn't fit here.

#27 what the hell "sensitive compartmented information facility for real-time updates" means

usually a 'secure' room in that its been constructed so that electronic emissions can not travel out or be tapped into through simple local monitoring, the red [secure and heavily encrypted] wires in and out are kept away or shielded from black wires [unencrypted] that go in and out, processes that occur within the facility stay within the facility, and all personnel entrance/exit is recorded and monitored with all uncleared personnel escorted and monitored during visits, with a scrub of the facility before entrance by uncleared personnel of any information or process that should not be seen or heard.

#36 Sorry this is long but here's what Contessa Brewer of MSNBC siad: "BREWER: I mean the thing is is that and I get frustrated and there was part of me that was hoping this was not going to be anybody with ties to any kind of Islamic country because there are a lot of people who want to use this terrorist intent to justify writing off people who believe in a certain way or come from certain countries or whose skin color is a certain way. I mean they use it as justification for really outdated bigotry.
And so there was part of me was really hoping this would not be the case that here would be somebody who is not the defined. I mean he’s accused he’s arrested you know I don’t want to convict him before it’s time to do so. He’s the guy authorities say is involved. But that being said I mean we know even in recent history you have the Hutaree militia from Michigan who have plans to let’s face it create terror.
That’s what they were planning to do and they were doing so from far different backgrounds then what this guy is coming from. So, the threat is not just coming from people who decide that America is the place to be and you know come here and want to become citizens. Obviously this guy did."
Basicly she said she was hoping she could show how bigotted and rascist the Tea Party or other conservative groups are. Never mind her own bigotry.

Air Vice-Marshal (AVM) is an air officer rank which originated in and continues to be used by the Royal Air Force.

Air Vice-Marshal is a 2 star rank and has a NATO ranking code of OF-7. It is equivalent to a Rear-Admiral in the Royal Navy or a Major-General in the British Army or the Royal Marines.

Interesting. And David Headley/Daoud Gilani and his partner in crime were Pakistani military academy grads and the sons of Pakistani army generals, as I recall. Are they sending their sons to wage covert war? Somebody needs to interview former President General Musharref on the subject.

#45 This makes me sad in one respect: I know Pakistani immigrants who are decent people and good Americans. They don't even think about this kind of shit, but they're getting hit with this idiot's tar brush. They follow the Muslim religion, including fasting for Ramadam, but don't expect anybody else to abstain from bacon, alcohol, etc., when they're around (they just do it themselves in a non-ostentatious way). The women dress like Americans, but modestly (like most decent women here did before the let-it-all-hang-out 1960's). They're good people, which just makes me want to kick this clown in the you-know-where for having the gall to be born in the same country as they were. >:-(

It may or may not be their intent, but keep in mind that the training for Pakistani military officers incorporates Pakistani Brigadier S.K. Malik's book The Quranic Concept of War.

This makes me sad ...

#49 Excellent point, lotp.
The Quranic Concept of War (pdf) is a must read.

“The universalism of Islam, in its all-embracing creed, is imposed on the believers as a continuous process of warfare, psychological and political, if not strictly military. . . . The Jihad, accordingly, may be stated as a doctrine of a permanent state of war, not continuous fighting.”

And I've met (and worked with a few) Pakistani immigrants who would knife you in a second if they could get away with it. These weren't the poor taxi drivers of stereotype but $100K+ earners from the top Paki families. Sometimes the mask slips and they look upon the kufr as some barnyard animal. That includes the attitude of the brood mare they bought/brought over.

Ditto. NPR had an interview/call-in today about this situation and about the Islamic terrorism in general. Two self-defined Pakistani Muslims who had acquired American citizenship called in to castigate those of their fellows who by action or inaction were involved in such things. They called it out as evil. I was very pleased to hear it.
