Israeli military chief: Hamas' Rafah brigade nearly dismantled
[GEO.TV] The chief of staff of Israel's military said on Monday that Hamas' brigade in the southern Gaza city of Rafah is nearly dismantled.

"We are clearly approaching the point where we can say we have dismantled the Rafah Brigade, that it is defeated not in the sense that there are no more terrorists, but in the sense that it can no longer function as a fighting unit," said Chief of the General Staff Herzi Halevi.

 File under: Hamas

#1 Rafah had, a few months ago, four battalions.

Not sure what a brigade is (fwiw Geo.TV is a Pakistani outfit)

#2 i like to cheer them on and say "good going" but the reality is that there are no civilians in gaza

so all the non-Hamas that are left there will simply grow another Hamas

#3 A batallion is normally about 600 men, but in the case of HamaSS and other Mooselimbs, it can range from 200 to a thousand.

Israel is taking out the leadership and the expertise needed to re-form the HamaSS military wing. It won't stop them reforming (only elimination of the entire Muslim populace of Gaza and the West Bank will do that), but it will give Israel a bit of breathing space before the next war.

#4 But the replacement of at least marginally competent leaders by spittle soaked fanatics will make the contest more, uh, dramatic.

#7 Does it really matter if Sinwar isn't identified and killed?

If 95% of the 'soldiers' of Hamas are killed and 80% of the tunnels are destroyed and 98% of the rockets and launchers are destroyed, how would Sinwar and Deif be able to function as 'military leaders'?
