69 Schools Close Over Security Issues in Uruzgan
[Tolo News] Uruzgan deputy head of the provincial education department Mohammad Noor Amini has said that at least 69 schools have closed due to insecurity in Uruzgan.

Amini said that there are 290 schools in the province of which 69 have closed over security issues.

Apparently 19 schools are closed in Trinkot, the scenic provincial capital, 16 in Gizab district, 18 in Chinartoo district, 10 in Khas Urozgan district, four in Deh Rawud district and two others in Chora district.

This comes on the heels of growing concerns in Kandahar over the growing number of parents pulling their girl-children out of school, long before they complete Grade 12.

According to education officials, thousands of Grade 1 girls are enrolled each year but parents are not letting them continue their studies once passing grades 7 or 8.

Officials say that each year about 10 000 girls are enrolled into schools but less than 1,000 of them will graduate from Grade 12.

Officals say that currently 76,000 girls are at schools in the province but that 144 schools have closed due to security issues.

This year, more than 1.2 million children are estimated to be in school, of which 41 percent are girls.

About 60,000 others, 21 percent of them girls, are estimated to attend Islamic studies' schools.

Puntland seeks int’l help to resettle Yemen refugees
GAROWE, Somalia -- Somalia’s Northeast State of Puntland made a plea for international assistance as hundreds of people fleeing from Yemen conflict continue to arrive in by boats, Garowe Online reports.
The sub-assistant associate deputy under-secretary manning the East Africa desk at Foggy Bottom is about to get a phone call...
Speaking at a press conference in the state capital of Garowe on Thursday, Puntland Interior Minister Ahmed Elmi Osman (Ahmed Karash) acknowledged that the large influx is beyond the capacity of local authorities, asking UN bodies to step in.
An even dozen refugees would be well beyond the capacity of Somali authorities...
The calls for external involvement have come after a boat carrying more than 1700 refugees from Yemen docked at Bossaso port on Wednesday.

He said, Puntland government worries about potential substandard conditions and waits for donors and aid agencies to intervene in the humanitarian situation on the ground.

Karash has also held talks with Yemeni Ambassador to Somalia on the influx of refugees seeking safe haven in Puntland.

Somalia President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has insisted on the evacuation of Somalis caught in Yemen cross-fire by planes and ships. Over 5000 people including Somalis, Yemenis, Ethiopians and Djiboutians have come ashore since early April.

Now languishing in worst conflict in recent memories, Yemen was once a destination for Somalis fleeing from danger at home.
Just think how bad Yemen has to be for people to return to Somalia...

Britain
70 Pakistanis deported from UK arrive
[DAWN] As many as 70 Paks, including two women, who were deported from the UK arrived at the Islamabad airport on Wednesday.

They were escorted by 140 British security officials during their journey.

After handing the deportees over to the Pak immigration authorities, the UK security officials returned to their home country.

A bigwig of Federal Investigation Agency's (FIA) immigration wing told Dawn that a special flight with 70 Pak undocumented Democrats overstaying in the UK landed here at Benazir Bhutto
... 11th Prime Minister of Pakistain in two non-consecutive terms from 1988 until 1990 and 1993 until 1996. She was the daughter of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, founder of the Pakistain People's Party, who was murdered at the instigation of General Ayub Khan. She was murdered in her turn by person or persons unknown while campaigning in late 2007. Suspects include, to note just a few, Baitullah Mehsud, General Pervez Musharraf, the ISI, al-Qaeda in Pakistain, and her husband, Asif Ali Zardari, who shows remarkably little curiosity about who done her in...
International Airport on Wednesday.

He said two women had been overstaying in the UK as none of them was involved in any crime either in the UK or in Pakistain. All of them were allowed to go home after brief questioning.

The immigration official said that as many as 140 security officials from UK were guarding the Pak deportees in the flight since they left the Heathrow airport for Islamabad.

He said the strategy of deploying two security personnel on one passenger was in line with the standard operating procedure (SOP).

"They don't take risk of any trouble created by passengers especially in the middle of the journey and therefore they deployed two security personnel for one person," the immigration official said.

He said all of the deportees were allowed to go to their homes after brief questioning.

China-Japan-Koreas
China orders Muslim shopkeepers to sell alcohol, cigarettes
h/t Instapundit
Chinese authorities have ordered Muslim shopkeepers and restaurant owners in a village in its troubled Xinjiang region to sell alcohol and cigarettes, and promote them in "eye-catching displays," in an attempt to undermine Islam's hold on local residents, Radio Free Asia (RFA) reported. Establishments that failed to comply were threatened with closure and their owners with prosecution.
The issuance of gov't 'food stamps' should assist this effort.
Facing widespread discontent over its repressive rule in the mainly Muslim province of Xinjiang, and mounting violence in the past two years, China has launched a series of "strike hard" campaigns to weaken the hold of Islam in the western region. Government employees and children have been barred from attending mosques or observing the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan. In many places, women have been barred from wearing face-covering veils, and men discouraged from growing long beards.
Tolerance is a two way street.

The U.S. will base B-1 bombers and surveillance planes in Australia amid South China Sea tensions
It looks like the U.S. Air Force is planning to deploy some strategic bombers and surveillance aircraft in Australia to put some pressure on China amid South China Sea tensions.

The South China Sea is the subject of several territorial claims. China claims sovereignty on some island chains and waters that are within the 200 nautical miles exclusive economic zone of Brunei, Malaysia, the Philippines, Taiwan and Vietnam

This year, China has started building an airstrip on the disputed Spratly Islands in the South China Sea waters claimed by the Philippines.

According to FP, the Defense Department's Assistant Secretary for Asian and Pacific Security Affairs David Shear, during testimony before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on May 13, said that along with moving U.S. Marines and Army units around the region, the Pentagon will deploy air assets in Australia, "including B-1 bombers and surveillance aircraft."

The U.S. Air Force ISR aircraft, possibly unmanned Global Hawk drones, will monitor activities around the disputed islands, whereas the "Bone" heavy bombers will serve as a deterrent to challenge Beijing aggressive ownership claims.

U.S. strategic bombers have already been temporarily deployed to Australia, to take part in exercises with the Royal Australian Air Force, in 2012 and at the end of 2014 as a consequence of a joint Force Posture Initiative signed in 2011 to train together to face threats in the Pacific.

Actually, U.S. aircraft don't really need to deploy to Australia to put pressure on China: Air Force Global Strike Command's bombers, including B-52s and B-2s, routinely operate from Andersen Air Force Base, in Guam, strategically located 1,800 miles (about 2,900 km) to the east of China. And they can even launch round-trip strike missions from their bases located in the Continental U.S.

According to Xinhuanet, China cautioned the U.S. against taking any actions in the region, urging Washington "not to take any risks or make any provocations so as to maintain regional peace and stability."

[DAWN] At the conclusion of an hours long apex committee meeting attended by senior Sindh government officials and the army and intelligence top brass, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Gen Raheel Sharif vowed to continue "across the board operations" at an increased tempo and hunt down Lions of Islam who commit heinous acts.

RAW involved in terrorist activities across Pakistan: foreign secretary
[DAWN] Foreign Secretary Aizaz Ahmad Chaudhry on Thursday said the Indian intelligence agency Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) is involved in various terrorist activities across Pakistain.

Chaudhry added that the matter had been taken up "a number of times" at the highest level with India through diplomatic channels.

He also touched upon the Bloody Karachi

Chaudhry said that Daesh's involvement in the attack cannot be established on the basis of a pamphlet purportedly left by bad boy group. However,

he said, security agencies are investigating the attack.

A letter was left by the gunnies on Wednesday who attacked the bus carrying members of the Ismaili community.

In response to a question, the foreign secretary said that Pakistain is fighting a war on terror and this war is yet to be over.

He said Pakistain is a responsible nuclear state and has proven that it has used its nuclear technology for socio-economic and scientific development.

Earlier during the day, the spokesperson for the Foreign Office responding to a question about Pakistain's relationship with Afghanistan had said that Pakistain has told Afghanistan that Indian spy agency RAW should not be allowed to operate against Pakistain from Afghan territory.

The statement follows after a visit by Pak premier Nawaz Sharif

Top court accepts Mumtaz Qadri petition challenging death sentence
[DAWN] The Supreme Court on Thursday accepted for hearing a petition filed by Mumtaz Qadri -- the killer of former Punjab
1.) Little Orphan Annie's bodyguard
2.) A province of Pakistain ruled by one of the Sharif brothers
3.) A province of India. It is majority (60 percent) Sikh and Hindoo (37 percent), which means it has relatively few Moslem riots....

governor Salman Taseer -- challenging the Islamabad High Court's decision to hand him the death sentence.

The hearing today included appeals by the counsel of the self-confessed killer to reduce Qadri's penalty as well as reject the government's plea to include the Anti-Terrorism Act in Taseer's murder case. A three-member bench headed by Justice Asif Saeed Khosa presided over the hearing.

Qadri's counsel Mian Naseer said that a trial court ruled a Rs100,000 fine and a double death penalty for his client. He contended that this is a blasphemy case, adding that Taseer had labeled the blasphemy law 'a black law'.

How can terming the blasphemy law and its use wrongful be blasphemous, Justice Khosa remarked today. He added that there is a difference between committing blasphemy and terming the blasphemy law as wrongful.

Qadri's counsel also added that this is not a case of personal enmity but it is about Shariah. Justice Khosa added that Shariat Appellate Bench of the Supreme Court and Federal Shariat Court are empowered to hear such issues.

After these initial arguments, the apex formally adopted the case for a hearing in October.

In its ruling on March 9, the IHC had rejected Qadri's application against his death sentence under the Pakistain Penal Code (PPC) but accepted his application to void the Anti Terrorism Act's (ATA) Section 7.

Qadri, a former commando of Punjab police's Elite Force, was sentenced to death for assassinating former Punjab governor Salman Taseer in Islamabad's Kohsar Market. Qadri said he killed Taseer over the politician's vocal opposition to the country's harsh blasphemy laws.

Mosque attack suspects get bail
[DAWN] LAHORE: An anti-terrorism court on Wednesday approved the bail plea of two suspects who were booked for attacking a mosque after the twin suicide kabooms on churches in Youhanabad.

Nishter Colony police produced Shamoon and Moon Punu before the ATC, facing charges of attacking Haji Ki Khoi mosque after the twin blasts in Youhanabad.

The suspects' counsel said his clients were innocent and booked in a fabricated case. He said police could not prove the charges and sought bail for them.

The prosecutor argued that police were investigating the matter and pleaded before the court to reject the bail petition.

The presiding judge approved the bail plea, directing the suspects to submit a surety bond of Rs100,000.

Rage grows over Samaha sentence: 'it legalizes terrorism'
[EN.ZAMANALWSL.NET] Lebanese political figures expressed outrage for a second day Thursday at what they felt was a soft sentence handed down to former Information Minister Michel Samaha over transporting explosives, with MP Walid Wally Jumblat

The military court Wednesday sentenced Samaha, who was being tried on terror charges, to four-and-a-half judicial years in prison. Given that he had been in jug since 2012, the ex-minister will be set for release in December. A judicial year is equal to nine months.

Syrian Official: World Must Protect Ancient City From IS
[ABCNEWS.GO] A Syrian official on Thursday called on the international community to protect the 2,000-year-old ruins of the ancient city of Palmyra, now threatened by advancing Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
Lion of Islams.

Maamoun Abdulkarim, Syria's director-general of antiquities and museums, told The News Agency that Dare Not be Named by telephone that the U.S.-led coalition, which has been striking the murderous Moslems in Syria since September, should expand its raids to hit IS fighters battling government forces at the gates of Palmyra.

"If Daesh enter the city it will be a human catastrophe," he said, using an Arabic acronym for the group. "If Daesh enters the city it will mean destroying the temples, ruins and tombs."

Palmyra is known for its Roman-era ruins, which once attracted thousands of tourists, who came to see its towering colonnades and a temple to the god Baal.

The UNESCO world heritage site in the ancient oasis city is Syria's most famous, and includes other attractions such as a theater, Efqa Spring and the Temple of Baalshamin.

Since Syria's conflict began in March 2011, looters have stolen artifacts from museums and damaged the ruins of Palmyra.

The Islamic State group has destroyed archaeological sites in neighboring Iraq in recent months. The Sunni bad boys, who have imposed a violent interpretation of Shariah law in the territories they control in Syria and Iraq, believe ancient relics promote idolatry.

The turbans have released videos in recent months showing fighters proudly destroying artifacts with hammers and drills in a museum in the northern Iraqi city of djinn-infested Mosul
... the home of a particularly ferocious and hairy djinn...
and using explosives to wreck other sites.

In March, IS members in Iraq razed 3,000-year old Nimrod and bulldozed 2,000-year old Hatra -- both UNESCO world heritage sites. The move was described by U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki Moon as a "war crime."

Terror Networks
Al-Baghdadi Urges Muslims to Move to 'Caliphate' in Audio Recording
[AnNahar] The leader of the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
group His Supreme Immensity, Caliph of the Faithful and Galactic Overlord, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi
...formerly merely the head of ISIL and a veteran of the Bagram jailhouse. Looks like a new messiah to bajillions of Moslems, like just another dead-eyed mass murder to the rest of us...
on Thursday urged Moslems to emigrate to his self-proclaimed "caliphate", in the jihadist supremo's first audio recording in six months.

"And we call upon every Moslem in every place to perform hijrah (emigration) to the Islamic State or fight in his land wherever that may be," he said.

The voice reading the half-hour speech appeared to match previous audio recordings of Baghdadi, the latest of which was released in mid-November.

As did his previous speech, the audio tape recording released on Thursday comes a few days after media reports that he might have been seriously maimed in a strike by the U.S.-led coalition bombing IS in Iraq and Syria.

There was no way for AFP to immediately authenticate the latest recording nor date it but Baghdadi speaks of developments in Yemen
...an area of the Arabian Peninsula sometimes mistaken for a country. It is populated by more antagonistic tribes and factions than you can keep track of. Except for a tiny handfull of Jews everthing there is very Islamic...
that suggest it is recent.

Echoing his previous exhortations, Baghdadi said moving to the caliphate he declared over parts of Iraq and Syria in June 2014 or waging jihad (holy war) at home was an obligation.

"There is no excuse for any Moslem who is capable of performing hijrah to the Islamic State, or capable of carrying a weapon where he is," he said in the speech, transcripts of which were released in five languages.

"Has the time not come for you to know that there is no might nor honor nor safety nor rights for you except in the shade of the Caliphate?," he said, addressing Moslems.

He criticized Sunni civilians fleeing fighting in western province of Anbar to seek shelter in Baghdad and other government-controlled areas.

"So return to your lands, and remain in your homes, and seek shelter -- after first seeking shelter with Allah -- with your people in the Islamic State, for you will find therein, by Allah's permission, a warm embrace and a safe refuge," he said.
