Singer Chris Brown 'shot at' and hip hop boss Suge Knight hit twice at MTV awards party
[Mail On Line] Witnesses said the 25-year-old Chris Brown, who is still on parole following his recent release from jail, had been the target of shots fired at the 1OAK club in West Hollywood. Brown was unhurt, but three other victims - among them Death Row Records founder Knight, 49, pictured bottom right, were reportedly taken to the city's Cedars Sinai hospital where one of them was said to be in a critical condition. Moments after gunfire erupted inside the popular nightclub,

Brown, who was the host of the pre-VMAs party, climbed onto a table, and appeared to react furiously to the shooting. He later tweeted his disappointment over the incident, adding 'miss me with the bulls***!!!'

Knight was rushed to hospital, after being shot twice. This morning he was undergoing surgery.

Critically endangered species camel dies in Karachi zoo
[DAWN] A young male Bactrian camel named Guddu suffering from a hump injury for months was found dead in its zoo enclosure on Friday morning.

It was born in the zoo less than two years ago and seen as the only hope for increasing the population of the endangered species in captivity. A calf and an adult male Bactrian camel had died a few years ago.

"The three-year-old male camel died of ruminal tympany (bloat), a life-threatening condition, which could be caused by a variety of reasons," said assistant director of the zoo Dr Aamir Ismail, adding that the animal was otherwise healthy and the hump injury was not serious.

Sierra Leone makes hiding Ebola patients illegal
[ARABNEWS] Sierra Leone has passed a new law imposing possible jail time for anyone caught hiding an Ebola patient — a common practice that the World Health Organization believes has contributed to a major underestimation of the current outbreak.

The new law, passed Friday, imposes prison terms of up to two years for violators, said politician Ansumana Jaiah Kaikai. It now goes for presidential approval.

He said the measure was necessary to compel residents to cooperate with government officials, noting that some residents had resisted steps to combat Ebola and build isolation centers in their communities.

Iceland issues volcano aviation red alert
[Iran Press TV] Iceland has issued an aviation red alert due to the Bardarbunga volcano erupting, saying large amounts of ash emissions are possible.

According to Iceland's Meteorological Office, the Bardarbunga volcano began erupting at a subglacial level on Saturday.

Iceland raised the aviation alert of the volcano to its highest level, which is red, saying there could be "significant emission of ash into the atmosphere."

'Brain-eating amoeba' kills man with no swimming history
[DAWN] KARACHI: A young man from Bloody Karachi
...formerly the capital of Pakistain, now merely its most important port and financial center. It is among the largest cities in the world, with a population of 18 million, most of whom hate each other and many of whom are armed and dangerous...
's Garden area has been confirmed as the latest victim of the 'brain-eating amoeba', or Naegleria fowleri, as the corpse count blamed on the deadly virus in Sindh has reached eight in three months, officials said on Friday.

They said that 34-year-old Mohammad Aamir, a resident of the Garden West area, was admitted to a local hospital in a precarious condition on Wednesday where he died on Thursday.

#4  The water situation in Karachi reminds me of a Bernard Miles monologue about the condition of his well and its water:

There's one thing, he'll see a lot of changes when he comes out 'cos we've 'ad the proper water fitted in since 'e bin away.
Council water. In pipes. But I don't care for it meself.
Weell, there don't seem to be no strength in it. You can't hardly taste it. You can't even smell it.
Give me a drop of my ole well water every time. You could smell that all right. That's why they made me fill it in.
A feller come across from Luton and took some on it away to be hanalated.
"That's alive," he says. "Crawling with 'em," he says.
I says "Crawlin' with what?"
And he says, "Bacteriums and microphobes and minute hanimal horganisations."

I says, "Get away," I says. "That's only a few tadpoles," I says. "We depends on them," I says, "to help us out with the meat ration."
He had to laugh.
"Well," he says, "It might be all right for bathin' in," he says, "but it certainly ain't fit to drink."
Well, the idea. Bathin'. I never had a bath in me life. Not as far as I know. I don't want one neither.

UN vows central role in fighting Ebola epidemic
The United Nations vowed on Saturday to play a "strong role" in helping Liberia and its neighbours fight the deadly outbreak of Ebola in west Africa, which it said could take months to bring it under control.
They're doomed...
Liberia has been particularly hard hit by the epidemic that has swept relentlessly across the region since March, accounting for almost half of the 1,427 deaths. In panic recognition of the deteriorating situation, neighbouring Ivory Coast announced on Saturday it had closed its borders with Liberia and Guinea in a bid to protect its citizens.

"Ebola in Liberia must be addressed to ensure a stable economy, future and society," said Karin Landgren, the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon's special representative for the country.

"The magnitude of this outbreak requires a higher level of coordination than previous responses and the UN Mission in Liberia will play a strong role in this effort," she said in a statement on Saturday.

Her comments were echoed by Dr David Nabarro, the UN's new pointman on Ebola, who arrived in the region on Thursday to tour the Ebola-hit countries of Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea and Nigeria. Nabarro, a British physician tasked with coordinating the global response to the worst-ever outbreak of the deadly virus, said the UN would "ensure that adequate resources are given to sectors that need it most".

A day earlier, the World Health Organization (WHO) warned it could take "several months" to bring the epidemic under control.

"This is not something to turn around overnight, it is not going to be easy; we expect several months of hard work," said the UN agency's Assistant Director-General, Dr Keiji Fukuda, who is accompanying Nabarro on his tour.

Their visit has coincided with a surge in new cases of Ebola in the region, as affected countries struggle to contain the spread of the killer virus. The WHO said on Friday that the death toll had risen to 1,427 out of more than 2,600 cases — with 77 succumbing to the disease between August 18 and 20.

As aid convoy arrives, Ukrainians shell Lugansk
By Chris Covert
Rantburg.com

In the midst of accusations of Russians of invading Ukraina, about 100 vehicles of the humanitarian aid convoy arrived in Lugansk, a city which is partially surrounded by elements of the Ukrainian Army.

According to reports from the pro Russian Voice of Sevastopol, Ukrainian artillery units began shelling Lugansk as soon as the aid convoy arrived. At the moment it is reported that seven civilians have died in artillery fire. Among the wounded was one child, her leg severed. Two mortar rounds hit in close proximity to where the trucks were being unloaded, but no damage or wounded were reported.

Mysteriously, the head of Ukraina's Security Service of Ukraine, Valentyn Nalyvaychenko characterized Russia's aid convoy as "direct intervention" because of the arrival of the aid trucks. He also said that Ukraina would not use its air force to attack the convoy. Ukrainian press contend that Russians are using the aid convoy as a "Trojan" to allow resupply of pro Russian militia units.

Russian customs officials are preparing the inspection of another 34 trucks to be sent into Ukraina.

Pro Russian militia have thrown up checkpoints along part of the route into Lugansk and Novosyolovka, despite Ukrainian artillery fire.

Fighting around Lugansk has increased, especially around Ilovaisk in the southwest where pro Russian militia and Ukrainian regular and police forces are locked in heavy combat using rocket as well as tube artillery and armored vehicles including main battle tanks.

Further north in Kharkov oblast, a militia unit attacked a Ukrainian Army checkpoint near Izium district using grenade launchers and automatic rifle fire during the night of August 19th to 20th. Eight were wounded in the encounter.

Also in the north, pro Russian militia have been attacking Ukrainian military units near Slavyanoserbsk and in the village of Smeloye. The battle area is about 12 kilometers northwest of Lugansk.

According to graphics supplied by Voice of Sevastopol, Ukrainian military units have cut a road leading southwest out of Lugansk, units of which are now enduring counterattacks by pro Russian militia. One Ukrainian unit occupies at least part of Krasnii Luch, reported two weeks ago to be in the hands of the militias. Militias claim they have Ukrainian units surrounded at Beloye and the town Lutugino.

Near Ilovaisk pro Russian militia claim to have defeated Ukrainian forces, which are now retreating, near Yasinovataya, Ilovaisk and Peski.

According to the Ukrainian English language news website Burko News, Ukrainian forces retreated to prevent local encirclement. The report said Ukrainian forces have "abandoned Ilovaisk".

According to the Ukrainian English language news website Burko News, "Ukrainian forces still control the M04 highway in the area of Novosvitlivka", which is an area north of the Ilovaisk battles. The report laments that although the highway is in Ukrainian hands it is still under pro Russian militia direct fire. Parts of the highway to the east of the area allow militia forces to maneuver with relative ease all the way to Lugansk.

Northeast of Donetsk, a top pro Russian militia commander, Igor Strelkov announced that his forces have driven out Ukrainian military forces near Krasny Partizan and Gorlovka. Strelkov said that Ukrainian police units had been manning a checkpoint and demanding tribute from travelers. The units also destroyed a Tochna U tactical missile launcher.

Shelling continues in Donetsk as the Ukrainian military forces attempt to bring their lines closer to the city. Artillery fire was said to hit two chemical plants and a residential area near the railway station. Two young children were killed in the shelling. Pro Russian militia say Ukrainians are using cluster munitions in some cases.

According to the Russian military blogger Colonel Cassad, militia efforts have stopped Ukrainian forces from closing in the city, and that "there is no direct threat to the city". Ukrainian forces are said to be exhausted and unable to continue their operations.

Militia forces are in a position, according to Colonel Cassad to force a decision in the north, save for mechanized troops which are at a premium for the pro Russian militia.

According to Colonel Cassad Ukrainian forces' "offensive [are] bogged down almost everywhere" while militias are on the attack.

Ukraine government shelling kills three civilians
[Iran Press TV] Three people have been killed by government shelling in Ukrainian's eastern city of Donetsk as festivities rage on between Kiev and pro-Russian forces.

According to reports, the three were killed by Ukrainian government artillery fire in a residential neighborhood east of Donetsk's city center, early on Saturday morning.

A neighbor told news hounds that all the three were part of one family, "It was a father, mother, and their daughter."

The family's younger daughter had been rushed to hospital, her present condition in unknown.

The family's grandfather, who survived the attack, told news hounds tearfully that they had not left the city because of his failing health.

Several other people were also injured in the attack. The Donbass Arena football stadium was also damaged during the shelling.

Earlier on Saturday, at least two more non-combatants were killed by artillery fire in the center of Donetsk, which is considered to be the main stronghold of pro-Russia forces.

Ukraine's mainly Russian-speaking regions in the east have witnessed deadly festivities between pro-Moscow forces and the Ukrainian army since Kiev launched military operations to silence the pro-Russians in mid-April.

The political unrest in eastern Ukraine has so far claimed the lives of more than 2,000 people, according to figures released by the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR).
