12 Killed, 43 Wounded In Memorial Day Weekend Shootings
[CHICAGO.CBSLOCAL] CHICAGO (STMW) — Twelve people were killed and at least 43 — including a 4-year-old girl — were wounded in shootings across Chicago this Memorial Day weekend, police said.

The 4-year-old, identified by her family as Jacele Johnson, was shot about 8 p.m. Friday in the West Englewood neighborhood. She and her 17-year-old cousin Romare Wilson were inside an SUV in the 7000 block of South Justine when another vehicle pulled up and someone inside opened fire, according to their family and Chicago Police.

The girl was shot in the head and taken to Comer Children’s Hospital in critical condition, authorities said. She has since been upgraded to fair condition, a hospital spokeswoman said Monday morning.

28 Shootings, 9 Fatal, Over Memorial Day Weekend In Baltimore
[SeeBS Balitmore] BALTIMORE (WJZ)--It's been a violent weekend in Baltimore after a surge of shootings--some deadly across the city.

Police say 28 people were shot, 9 of them killed over this weekend, adding to the record-breaking violence.

The shooting didn't stop on Monday night after a 9-year-old boy and another man were both injured by gun fire in the 2900 block of Arunah Avenue. Police say the child was shot in the leg and another man suffered a graze wound to the head.

New police video of a person of interest in Sunday's deadly shooting in Druid Heights. It's one of several active investigations following a Memorial Day weekend riddled with gun violence across Baltimore City.

From one district to the next leaving 26 people shot and 9 dead.

Councilmember Mary Pat Clarke links the violence to a city still reeling from weeks of unrest.

"It was an earthquake kind of time and i think we're still dealing with the aftershock," she says.

The latest victims died early Monday morning. In the Western District a memorial marks the spot where a man and a woman were shot. The man later died, the woman is in critical condition.

North from there, a triple shooting. A man dies after he's shot in the chest. Then cops discover two other males shot in the incident, including a 17 year old, after they walked to a local hospital.

Neighbors in Govans describe this as a quiet community and say they're surprised the gun violence spilled into their streets.

"It's scary because I've got kids. I don't want anything to happen to my kids, especially around here. It's a peaceful neighborhood," one person said,

In the Eastern District traces of dry blood after a man is shot in the head and left in critical condition.

Reduced sentence demanded for sexual abuse against three underage girls
[Hurriyet Daily News] The sentence demanded for a man who allegedly drugged and sexually abused two 14-year-old girls and one 15-year-old girl has been reduced from 150 years to 10 years, on the grounds that the girls gave their consent.
"You want to drug us and diddle us while we're insensate? Yeah, sure. Go ahead!"
The three girls, identified only by their initials G.D., R.A. and N.K., told their schoolteacher in 2014 that the 42-year-old suspect, identified as U.C., had taken them to his house to teach English before plying them with alcohol and marijuana, making them watch porn, and sexually abusing them.
"What's that on the teevee?"
"It's a porn flick."
"Oh! I can't watch!"
"[SNICK!] Watch the damn porn flick!"
"Is that a gun?"
"Yeah."
"I'm watchin'! I'm watchin'!"

Following an investigation, U.C. was tossed in the slammer
Yez got nuttin' on me, coppers! Nuttin'!
for "sexual harassment of a minor," "depriving a person of their freedom," "providing drugs," "possessing a firearm and bullets," and "making minors watch obscene publications." According to these charges he originally faced a total of 150 years in jail.
He got off easy. It coulda been life.
U.C. claimed that he was the victim in the case as he had told the girls his real name and it was actually they who tried to give him cigarettes, alcohol and drugs. He was released from jail before his trial after seven months on the grounds that long arrests are against the European Convention on Human Rights.
Underage girls often take advantage of me when I tell them my real name. Of course, I only show up when they're trying to spin straw into gold. I make them try to guess my name. Unsuccessful guesses get me cigarettes, booze, weed, or whoopee. It's really kinda pathetic. They keep coming up with guesses like "Waldemar Putin" or "Rumplestiltskin" or something like that. Nobody ever guesses "Fred."
In the latest hearing, the prosecutor demanded U.C.'s acquittal of the charges of drugging the girls and depriving them of their freedom, saying they had given their consent.
Sure they did.

-Short Attention Span Theater-
Kenyan lawyer offers livestock to wed Obama's daughter
A Kenyan lawyer has offered US president Barack Obama 50 cows and other assorted livestock in exchange for his 16-year old daughter Malia's hand in marriage, a report said Tuesday.

Felix Kiprono said he was willing to pay 50 cows, 70 sheep and 30 goats in order to fulfil his dream of marrying the first daughter.

"I got interested in her in 2008," Kiprono said, in an interview with The Nairobian newspaper.

At that time President Obama was running for office for the first time and Malia was a 10-year-old.

"As a matter of fact, I haven't dated anyone since and promise to be faithful to her. I have shared this with my family and they are willing to help me raise the bride price," he said.

Kiprono said he intended to put his offer of marriage to Obama and hopes the president will bring his daughter with him when he makes his first presidential visit to Kenya, the country where his father was born, in July.

Obama's Kenyan grandmother, who is in her early 90s, still lives in Kogelo, in western Kenya, home to a number of the president's relatives.

"I am currently drafting a letter to Obama asking him to please have Malia accompany him for this trip. I hope the embassy will pass the letter to him," he said.

Kiprono dismissed the notion he might be a gold-digger.

"People might say I am after the family's money, which is not the case. My love is real," he insisted.

The young lawyer, whose age was not revealed, said he had already planned his proposal, which would be made on a hill near his rural village, and the wedding at which champagne would be shunned in favour of a traditional sour milk called "mursik".

Kiprono said that as a couple he and the young Obama would lead "a simple life".

"I will teach Malia how to milk a cow, cook ugali (maize porridge) and prepare mursik like any other Kalenjin woman," he said.

Bangladesh
Court seeks explanation over Bhatara gang rape
[Dhaka Tribune] The High Court yesterday sought explanation from the police for delaying to register a case over the gang rape of an indigenous woman in the capital on May 21.

The bench of Justice Farah Mahbub and Justice Kazi Md Ejarul Haque Akondo also asked the police and the government to explain as to why the girl should not be compensated for the delay in recording the case.

The court ordered the government to make sure that the police accept any rape complaint and serve all victims without any discrimination in the future.

The home secretary, police chief and DMP commissioner were ordered to issue a circular to the cop shoppes to ensure discrimination-free service for all citizens without considering their religion, gender, caste or place of birth. They were also asked to submit a compliance report by a month.

The directives come in response to a writ petition filed by five human rights
...not to be confused with individual rights, mind you...
organizations -- Naripakkha, Bangladesh Mohila Gay Pareehad, National Indigenous Council, Ain O Salish Kendra (ASK) and BLAST.

The court took into consideration media reports that said the gang rape victim was not given proper attention at three cop shoppes she and her family members had gone to file the case on Friday.

The court asked the authorities concerned to explain as to why action should not be taken against the responsible police members for "negligence." It also asked for explanation by two weeks on why the delay of police in recording the first information report (FIR) should not be declared illegal.

The home secretary, IGP, DMP commissioner, OCs of Uttara, Khilkhet, Gulshan and Bhatara cop shoppes and the officer-on-duty at Bhatara cop shoppe were made respondents in the rule.

The petitioners were asked to submit a list of former judges, lawyers and women rights activists who will review the existing laws to curb sexual violence and harassment by May 31.

The High Court bench set June 14 for further hearing on the matter.

Caucasus/Russia/Central Asia
Turkmenistan unveils gold statue of president
[Hurriyet Daily News] The isolated Central Asian state of Turkmenistan on May 25 unveiled a large gold statue of President Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov riding a horse, in a move echoing his predecessor's cult of personality.

The 21-metre (69 foot) statue, located in the capital Ashgabat, depicts the president mounted on his favourite horse, Akkan ("White Khan"), and saluting with his right hand.

Cast in bronze and covered in 24-carat gold leaf, it is the first such monument of the president of the energy-rich ex-Soviet country since he came to power in 2006.

The statue is called "The Protector", Berdymukhamedov's unofficial title.

The former dentist came to power after the death of Saparmurat Niyazov, who built a gold statue of himself that rotated with the sun's movements.

It was taken down several years after Niyazov's death, but has since been moved to the outskirts of the capital.

Niyazov, known for establishing a personality cult, also renamed months after members of his family and wrote a "book of the soul" that all school children were expected to learn by heart.

At the unveiling of the new statue, which Berdymukhamedov did not attend, the parliament's speaker Akdja Nurberdieva said it was the result of "multiple suggestions from simple people, work collectives and public organizations," in order "to mark his services to the homeland".

The ceremony featured a rendition of the national anthem, soldiers taking an oath of loyalty to the president and a flock of white pigeons being released into the sky.

Last year, the parliament named horse-lover Berdymukhamedov a "Master Jockey and Mentor". He was later recognised as a "People's Horse Breeder" at a day of equestrian events in April. In 2013, the president suffered a fall from his horse seconds after winning a race, clips of which have gained thousands of views on YouTube.

"The protector" statue was unveiled to mark Ashgabat Day, a holiday celebrating the capital of 400,000 people that was recognised by the Guinness Book of Records in 2013 for having "the highest density of white marble-clad buildings".

Turkmenistan is regularly blacklisted as one of Freedom House's "Worst of the Worst" list of repressive countries for its lack of civic liberties.

Fifth Column
Boston University prof at center of racist tweet flap was charged with felony ID theft in 2008
[FOXNEWS] A newly hired Boston University professor, who apologized over racially charged comments and allegedly ridiculed a white rape victim in Facebook posts, reportedly was charged in 2008 with felony identity theft.
The return of Miss Grundy. Not that she'll be banned in Boston, mind you.
According to Boston.com, incoming BU sociology professor Saida Grundy was convicted of a misdemeanor in 2008 after she created a fake account for another woman on the adult website Fling.com.

Grundy, who was a graduate student at the University of Michigan at the time, said in a statement to Boston.com: "When this incident occurred I was 24, and exercised the poor judgment of a heartbroken 24 year old. I took accountability then as I do now. I hold true to the lessons learned, and my life has since moved on."

Boston.com obtained the court records in the case, as well as the police report, which stated the fake account was created using photos Grundy got of a woman who was dating a man with whom Grundy had also been involved. The photos of the woman, who lived in Virginia, were taken from the man's email account.

The Virginia woman became aware of the Fling.com account in her name in June 2008. She called local police, Boston.com reports, who then contacted police in Ann Arbor, Mich.

"This was a jealous thing regarding another man," Grundy told the police, Boston.com reports, citing the police report.

Grundy was charged with identity theft and using computers to commit a crime, both felonies. She also was charged with malicious use of a telecommunications service, a misdemeanor.

Grundy pleaded guilty to the misdemeanor count in exchange for the dismissal of the felonies. Her probation ended in June 2009.

Boston University says the 2008 conviction will not derail Grundy's employment.

"A number of years ago, when she was a student at the University of Michigan, Dr. Grundy made a mistake," Steve Burgay, the university's senior vice president of external affairs, told Boston.com.

"She admitted the mistake, accepted the consequences, and brought closure to that case," he continued. "Eight years later, we do not see any reason to reopen it."

Grundy, an incoming assistant professor of sociology and African-American studies at the school, previously tweeted that "white masculinity is THE problem for america's (sic) colleges," white men are a "problem population," and that she tries to avoid shopping at white-owned businesses.

After several alumni complaints, Boston University president Robert Brown condemned the racist tweets.

"I regret that my personal passion about issues surrounding these events led me to speak about them indelicately," Grundy said following the controversy. "I deprived them of the nuance and complexity that such subjects always deserve."

The racist tweets were followed by reports that Boston University was sent an outrageous Facebook exchange in which a poster who identifies herself as the controversial sociology professor mercilessly ridicules a white rape victim.

#2  No, that's not how you fight this. What you do is get 3 or 4 students that the teacher has ridiculed together and file a class action suit, stating that the university has created a hostile learning environment by allowing her to teach. If they're all one sex, you can even go Title IX and get the Dept of Edu involved.

The Grand Turk
Erdogan blasts New York Times: 'Who are you? Know your place'
[Hurriyet Daily News] Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan
... Turkey's version of Mohammed Morsi but they voted him back in so they deserve him...
has slammed a recent New York Times
...which still proudly displays Walter Duranty's Pulitzer prize...
editorial as "shameless," calling on the U.S. daily to "know its place."
There aren't many things that'll make me side with the New York Times, but this is one of them
"Who are you? Can you write such a thing [writing a critical editorial] against the U.S. administration? If you do, [the administration] would immediately do what is necessary," Erdogan said during a panel organized by a think-tank in Istanbul on May 25.
Can, do, and have done, as long as it's a Publican administration.
"A certain media group in The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
tries to sustain its tutelage by taking support from certain places. The new constitution and switching to a presidential system will eternally seal the path of these coup-makers," he added, describing the editorial as "meddling in Turkey's affairs."
The more argument against Turkey's adoption of a "strong man" system.
In its editorial on May 22, the New York Times noted that Erdogan had a long history of intimidating and co-opting the Turkish media, but new alarms were set off this week when criminal complaints were filed against the editors of daily Hurriyet over a headline on its website.

"Mr. Erdogan appears increasingly hostile to truth-telling. The United States and Turkey's other NATO
...the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. It's headquartered in Belgium. That sez it all....
allies should be urging him to turn away from this destructive path," the editorial read.

Hurriyet addressed Erdogan to defend its independent line in an editorial on May 19. "If you mean that we are afraid of defending our right to freedom of the press, free speech and freedom to criticize, which are all guaranteed by the constitution, then you should know that we will defend these freedoms with no fear," the daily said.

On May 22, members of the Vienna-based International Press Institute (IPI)'s Executive Board called on Erdogan and his supporters in the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) to "immediately halt a disingenuous campaign of vilification against the Dogan Media Group and its daily newspaper Hurriyet."

This is not the first time that Erdogan has targeted the New York Times. He had also slammed the U.S. daily for a September 2014 story claiming that Turkey is one of the biggest sources of recruits for the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL).

Turkish pollster says ruling AK party at 41 pct, on course to lose single-party gov't

's ruling AK Party is seen losing its simple parliamentary majority as support for the pro-Kurdish HDP is likely to touch 10.4 percent, just above the electoral threshold, Turkish pollster SONAR found in its latest survey.

SONAR's poll, published on Monday, showed the main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) at 26 percent and the nationalist MHP at 18.1 percent ahead of June 7 general elections.
Would it be enough to slow President Erdogan's rush to get off the train of democracy at the neo-Ottoman station?

Bar president, lawyer killed in clash between lawyers and police in Sialkot
[DAWN] SIALKOT: Protests erupted in several cities across Punjab after two lawyers — including Daska Bar Association President Rana Khalid Abbas — were killed and two others wounded on Monday during a clash between protesting lawyers and police in Daska tehsil of Sialkot district in Punjab.
Has anyone ever heard of lawyers thumping police anywhere else in the world?
Lawyers in various parts of Multan, Faisalabad and Gujranwala are staging protests against the killing of their colleagues. Several lawyers also resorted to attacks on police personnel and mobile vans, according to TV reports.
I don't think they feel disgrace like we do.
Chief Justice of the Lahore High Court took notice of the killings and summoned the heads of various lawyers organisations. The CJ also sought a report from the Daska district and sessions judge as a meeting went under way in this regard.
You'd think that because of common cultures and backgrounds you'd see such things in India and Afghanistan, too. But Pakistain is the only place I've ever heard of where the lawyers run riot inside and outside the courtroom.
During the meeting, it was decided that Rangers personnel would be sought to maintain the law and order situation in the violence-hit areas.
Somehow the picture of a trial lawyer heaving a brick through the windshielf of a police van does not compute. Not even John Edwards would do such a thing. At least I don't think he would.
Of course not. Such active activity might mess up his hair.
Earlier, officials of Daska Tehsil Municipal Administration (TMA) along with SHO of Daska city police station Shehzad Warraich were conducting an anti-encroachment drive in Sialkot's Daska tehsil when local residents and lawyers staged a protest, seeking more time from authorities.
Despite the number of lawyers infesting its courtrooms, Pakistain doesn't have an actual system of real property deeds.
The SHO opened straight fire to disperse the protesters as a result of which a pedestrian and three lawyers, including the Daska bar president, sustained gunshot wounds.
"Straight fire" means they waited until they saw the whites of their rolling eyes. Too bad about the innocent pedestrian. He shoulda kept his eyes closed.
The injured were shifted to Civil Hospital Daska where Rana Khalid Abbas and another lawyer succumbed to their wounds during treatment.
"Yer honor... Rosebud!"
"I object, yer honor! [WHEEZE!] I am undone!"

Fear and tension gripped the area after the incident as lawyers and area residents took to the streets protesting against the action. Businesses and markets also closed down after the clash.
Yeah. Fear and tension.

#1  Of course we are not far off from this ourselves.

Can you see it, lawyers and policemen going at it in the lobby of courthouses and at police stations.

Do lawyers' lives matter?

#2  They thump police patrols round the Bailey!
No Rumpoles in Pak courtrooms; daily,
By counsel in camera
Or courthouse-steps hammerer,
New dump-holes are torn, oh-so-gayly.

Islamic holy man: Wanking could make your hand preggies in afterlife.
[Breitbart] A Muslim cleric has warned that men who pleasure themselves could make their hands pregnant in the afterlife.

Turkey's Hurriyet Daily News reports that Mucahid Cihad Han made the comments on a live TV broadcast after a married man called his show to say he could not stop masturbating, even on holy pilgrimage to Mecca.

Han responded that masturbation was a sin in Islam. He added:

"Moreover, one hadith states that those who have sexual intercourse with their hands will find their hands pregnant in the afterlife, complaining against them to God over its rights.

"If our viewer was single, I could recommend he marry, but what can I say now?"

The self-styled televangelist advised the viewer to "resist Satan's temptations".

The issue is controversial in Islam as there are varying opinions on how permissible masturbation can be. The Koran has no clear reference to the act and many hadiths (teachings of Mohammed outside of the Koran) are of questionable authenticity.

Few Islamic scholars consider it "haram" (forbidden), with most considering it "makruh" (disliked or offensive). Some even say it is permissible in certain circumstances, such as avoiding temptation to commit adultery.

Han was widely mocked on social media after making the statement. One Twitter user asked: "Are there any hand gynaecologists in the afterlife? Is abortion allowed there?"

Another added: "So you think being pregnant is a God-given punishment?"

#1  That probably explains the goat people (Fauns & Satyrs) in the afterlife. Perhaps a warning on that is in order as well.

Myanmar bans Time magazine
[Dhaka Tribune] Myanmar's government has banned this week's issue of Time magazine because of a cover story about a Buddhist monk accused of fueling recent religious violence in the country.

State television announced Tuesday that the decision was made "in order to prevent the recurrence of racial and religious riots."

The magazine's cover carries a photo of a Buddhist monk, Wirathu, with the words "The Face of Buddhist Terror." Wirathu is a leader of a radical movement of monks that preaches that the country's small Moslem minority threatens racial purity and national security. He has called for restrictions on marriages between Buddhists and Moslems, and for boycotts of Moslem-owned businesses.

Nearly 250 people have died and tens of thousands, mostly Moslems, have fled their homes in religious violence in the past year. Buddhist mobs have marched through villages burning houses and mosques and brandishing machetes and clubs.

139 Grave Sites, 28 Trafficking Camps Found in Malaysia
[AnNahar] A total of 139 grave sites and 28 human-trafficking camps have been found in a remote northern Malaysian border region, the country's top police official told news hounds Monday.

National police chief Khalid Abu Bakar revealed the findings at a presser a day after the government announced the discovery of camps and graves, the first such sites found in Malaysia since a regional human-trafficking crisis erupted earlier this month.

"(Authorities) found 139 suspected graves. They are not sure how many bodies are inside each grave," Khalid said.

He added that the number and size of the 28 camps found suggested that they may have housed a combined hundreds of people. The largest could hold up to 300 people, another had a capacity of 100, while the rest could hold about 20 each, he said.

The discovery is the latest evidence of the lethal nature of the region's human-trafficking trade.

Police in neighbouring Thailand in early May had found secret human-trafficking camps on their side of the border and dozens of shallow graves.

Malaysian officials had subsequently dismissed the suggestion that similar sites existed on Malaysian soil.

Khalid said the camps and graves were in jungly, mountainous areas that were difficult to reach. He declined to respond to a later question on how such an extensive system of camps could have existed without detection by authorities and whether the complicity of corrupt officials was suspected.
What you don't look for, oddly enough, you are unlikely to find.
Rights groups have long accused Malaysian authorities of not doing enough to contain human-smuggling.

Khalid said at least one body was "badly decomposed." The authorities were in the painstaking process of exhuming and conducting post-mortems on the remains, he added.

Thailand launched a crackdown on human-smuggling following the discovery of its mass graves. The move appears to have caused nervous traffickers to abandon their human cargo at sea, leaving boats filled with hundreds of starving migrants seeking to land in Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia.

After initially turning them away, Malaysia and Indonesia last week bowed to international pressure, saying they would admit boat people pending their repatriation or resettlement elsewhere.

Prime Minister Najib Razak said he was "deeply concerned" by the discovery of the graves.

"I am deeply concerned with graves found on Malaysian soil, purportedly connected to people-smuggling," he said on his Facebook and Twitter accounts. "We will find those responsible."

#1  Slaving. Muslim hobby well before the white Europeans even knew of the Americas.

BTW, part of the 'evil' American colonial experience was ending that hobby of the Muslim Moros in southern Philippines a hundred years ago. Like racism, it's only 'evil' when whites do it.

#2  General Sherman's march to the see resulted in burning of thousands of farms and plantations. This famous government solution resulted in a huge camp following and eventual migration to the North of former slaves. No detailed search required for the simple irony found here.

#6  Dunno.Been a long time since US Army leadership was merely given an objective, and how it was done was left up to them.

Civilian or Government oversight of Tier 1 and 2 SOF is particularly onerous. I recall limp wristed Assistant Secretaries of Defense and congressional staffers taking great personal pride in crushing the nuts of senior military leaders. The creation of ASDSOLIC at the five sided nut was supposed to offer an info/liaison conduit for these vermin. Not sure how it has progress however.

#7  To add: there was some migration of blacks to the North after the Civil War, but it really began about the time of the industrialization of the Midwest, particularly the auto industry.

FWIW, quite a few migrated West as well. Not every cowboy was Gene Autry.
