Taliban damage Buddha relic in Swat
2007-09-12
A bomb detonated by pro-Taliban militants on Tuesday damaged a rock engraved with BuddhaÂ’s images in Swat district, police said. The incident recalled the internationally condemned destruction of the huge Bamiyan Buddhas in Afghanistan by the Taliban regime in 2001.
The picture here is of the Bamiyan Buddhas being boomed by the Talibs. I found the pic at this link, which quotes part of an NYT article titled: Why Attack Art? Its Role Is To Be Helpful. The article itself is behind the pay firewall.
Shrapnel from the blast in the town of Malam Jabba hit the rock, but didn’t damage the Buddhist images, local police chief Mohammad Iqbal told AFP. “It appears to be the work of the local militants who condemn these relics as being un-Islamic,” Iqbal said. “It looks more like a symbolic attack to embarrass the government internationally.” The Northern Areas are known for Buddhist heritage and archaeological sites that attract a large number of religious tourists, mainly from Buddhist countries, despite security fears.

#6  The US has recently issued a new deck of cards with all the art sites for Iraq and Afghan. They even have nice "thoughts of the day" on them. My favorite is "This site has survived seventeen centuries. Will it survive yours?" Maybe we should print them in Arabic and mail some out to AQI.
Check out some of the cards here:

#5  I always wanted to ask Mullah Omar, "If it's only stones, why are you so nervous about them?"

#3  In reference to the Bamiyan Buddhas, mullah Omar is said to have issued the order: "Go ahead; it's only breaking stones."

I am beginning to believe it is time to break a certain stone in Mecca.

#2  Who remembers that the Taliban's "Roving Ambassador" accepted a Muslim Students Association invitation and spoke at the University of Southern California, on March 10, 2001? Years ago, I heard a tape of the speech, and when the destruction of the Buddhas was defended, the audience roared in approval. As for the alleged drug eradication, that is completely false. Taliban took a 15% cut of the Helmand drug industry then, and they do now.
