Philadelphia, PA shooting leaves 4 dead, 4 more injured.
[MAIL] Four people are dead and four more are injured, including two children aged 2 and 13, after a mass shooting in Philadelphia Monday night, as a man wearing a ballistic vest and carrying an AR-15 and a police scanner was arrested.

The victims were apparently random, with no connection immediately known between them and the shooter.

Brief security camera video shows the shooter just walking down the street, firing at people. The shootings took place over several city blocks in the southwestern neighborhood of Kingsessing.

Responding officers chased the suspect - who was also carrying a handgun and multiple magazines - as he continued to fire, and he was arrested in an alley after surrendering, Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw said at a news conference.

'At this point all we know is that this person decided to leave their home and target individuals,' Outlaw said, noting that the shooter had seemingly no connection to any of the victims.

SPAM goes on lockdown due to inflation in NYC
[NYP] It’s the nation’s crises in a can.

Inflation and crime have gotten so bad in Gotham that even cheap meat like Spam has to be locked up.

At Duane Reade’s store in the Port Authority bus depot, the shelf-stable product — only $3.99 a can — is now being stocked in plastic, anti-theft cases.

"I’ve never seen that before!" one cashier laughed while using a magnet to remove a can of Spam from its cage.

The cashier was among the employees, tourists and store regulars stunned that the iconic blue-and-yellow cans are now being kept under lock-and-key — some even poking fun at the sight as "a sort of Jeff Koons homage," per one viral tweet.

Jenny Kenny, 43, who was visiting from Louisville, KY, was aware of the ongoing crime waves hitting cities like New York and San Francisco, but still couldn’t believe the sight of "so many things in boxes."

"Some of these things are pretty ridiculous," she said.

#7  Our family has 4 usual spam uses.

1. we slice it thin and uses like a crispy bacon substitute.

2. Cut up 4 x 1/4" thick slices, chop it up into small pieces, toss it in a pan and overcook it. Mix up 2 ot 3 scramble eggs and cook it together until the eggs start to turn dry and light brown.

3. Cut up 4 x 1/4" thick slices, chop it up into small pieces, toss it in a pan and overcook it. Make some Grits or Cream of Wheat (cooked thick Southern style) and Spam and either added together.

4. Cut up 4 x 1/4" thick paddy slices, cook until light brown and crispy outside. Toss it between 2 white (NON-WOKE) bread slices and some Deli or German mustard and chow down.

Owner of Vancouver Pop Up drug market Tango Uniform
[Breitbart] A Vancouver man who opened up a mobile shop selling "clean" drugs, including heroin, cocaine, meth, and MDMA, died of a suspected fentanyl overdose.

Jerry Martin, 51, dealt with a cocaine addiction and spent most of his youth homeless, VICE reported. He initially survived the overdose and was hospitalized for a few days before passing away on Friday.

In May, Martin opened a Drugs Store — the first brick-and-mortar shop in Canada and the U.S. to sell illicit substances, but his products were tested to be free of fentanyl or other adulterants. He set up shop in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside, the epicenter of Canada’s overdose crisis. Less than 24 hours after its grand opening, authorities arrested him. His partner, Krista Thomas, told Vice that Martin "wanted to save lives."

"Jerry believed that people were self-medicating their trauma and so long as they were doing that, they needed a safe supply to do it," Thomas told VICE. "He’s no more exempt than any other human being on this earth. He had his own trauma and unfortunately, he relapsed."

In previous interviews with Vice, Martin said he decided to open up Drugs Store after his stepbrother, Gord Rennie, passed away from a drug overdose after being released from prison.

The Northernmost Town on Earth: Woman Tells of Her Unusual Life on an Island
[Epoch Times] A former design student from Norway gave up city life for a remote Arctic island after a boat trip rocked her outlook, and she’s never looked back, despite the huge adjustment.

Originally a city-dweller from Asker, Norway, 31-year-old Eveline Lunde has lived in an apartment in the small town of Longyearbyen, the northernmost town on Earth, on Spitsbergen Island in Norway’s Svalbard Archipelago for the past four years.

Just 800 miles (1,287 kilometers) from the North Pole, Lunde has grown used to permafrost, the northern lights, snowmobiles, the midnight sun, and a thriving polar bear population—a far cry from life at design school in Oslo.

A town of around 2,300 people, Longyearbyen is also home to a "significant" polar bear population numbering several hundred. The bears are monitored and protected. Nonetheless, residents are required to carry a flare gun as a deterrent, and a rifle as a last resort, when venturing out on hikes or longer journeys.

Lunde said: "It is strictly prohibited to kill a polar bear, except in cases of self-defense. In the event of a polar bear being killed, a thorough investigation would be conducted, treating it with the same seriousness as if it were a human fatality."

Pence pressed on defending exemption of military academies from affirmative action ruling
[The Hill] Former Vice President Mike Pence, who is running for the presidency in 2024 as a Republican, was pressed to comment in an interview aired Sunday on the Supreme Court’s decision to exempt military academies from its ruling on affirmative action.

"Why did the court carve out the military academies? This ruling does not apply to — to our military academies. As Justice [Ketanji Brown] Jackson said, one standard for the board room, another standard for the bunker. Doesn’t she have a case — a point there?" host Jon Karl asked Pence on ABC’s "This Week."

Pence said "this probably won’t be the first time that" he disagrees with the court’s "newest justice," and argued the American military has long been "an instrument of advancing equality since virtually the founding of this country."

"I mean, there were African American officers in New England regiments in the Revolutionary War that we’ll be celebrating on Independence Day," the former vice president said. "So, I think the military’s been a place where the doors have been open for a long time ... for minorities and they’ve distinguished themselves with sacrifices and service for generations, and I know they always will."

The Supreme Court last week decided to severely limit the use of race as a factor in college admissions, effectively ending affirmative action programs. The move has drawn starkly different reactions from either side of the political aisle.

Speaking broadly of the ruling, Pence said "there was a time for affirmative action," but "those days are over."

De Beers gives Botswana 50% of diamond production
[HOT AIR] This is quite a story on its face.

Botswana will increase its take of the diamonds De Beers mines there from 25% to 50% in 10 years’ time, part of a deal that extends the company’s relationship with the country while loosening its hold on its output there.

...The agreement in principle was announced over the weekend, but De Beers Chief Executive Al Cook provided details of the pact on Monday. Negotiations over the new deal were watched closely in the diamond industry.

The relationship is deeper than most that involve a miner and a host state. De Beers is the world’s biggest producer of rough diamonds, by value. Botswana, meanwhile, accounts for 70% of De Beers’s worldwide production.

Under the current deal inked in 2011, De Beers gets 75% of production from Debswana, a 50-50 joint venture between the government and De Beers. De Beers sells those rough diamonds to buyers that polish and sell them. Botswana sells its share of production from the pact.

According to the terms of the new deal, Botswana’s share will jump to 30% of production, according to Cook. That will increase to 40% in five years and then 50% after 10, he said in an interview.

The country also extended the company’s mining licenses for another 25 years from their original 2029 expiration date. Now everything’s set to expire in 2054.

At one time, De Beers controlled 80% of the world’s diamond supply, and with diamonds making up 90% of tiny, land-locked Botswana’s exports, De Beers is definitely playing the long game.

In 2012, they began to move some corporate functions out of London to Botswana, and rattled the industry, while energizing what had once been a sleepy backwater capital city — Gaborone. It’s coming along.

Saudi Arabia, Russia to extend cut in oil production of one million barrels a day
[AFRICANEWS] Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
announced on Monday that it was extending its oil production cut by one million barrels a day to boost flagging prices, while Russia announced that it would cut its exports by 500,000 bpd in August.

These measures are the latest to be taken by major producers to stabilize prices in the face of high market volatility, lingering fallout from Russia's invasion of Ukraine and China's faltering economic recovery.

Saudi Arabia, the heavyweight of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), decided in early June to make a further production cut in the hope of boosting prices.

This voluntary reduction, which took effect this weekend, will continue into August and "may be extended" beyond that period, the kingdom's official news agency reported, citing a source in the Energy Ministry.

"The source confirmed that this additional voluntary reduction reinforces the precautionary measures taken by OPEC+ countries with the aim of supporting the stability and balance of oil markets," the agency added.

This decision maintains production in the oil-rich kingdom at around nine million barrels per day.

Announcing the cut last month following a meeting of oil producers, Saudi Energy Minister Prince Abdelaziz bin Salmane said it was potentially "extendable".

In April, several Opec+ members had decided to voluntarily cut their production by more than a million barrels a day, a surprise decision that briefly supported prices but did not lead to a sustained rise.

Government Corruption
National Archives Quietly Releases some (not all) Of JFK Assassination Records
[Daily Caller] The National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) announced Friday the release of additional records associated with the assassination of former President John F. Kennedy.
A tragic fire at NARA could destroy remaining records.
The records were released after President Biden’s directive that agencies review all redactions in records and reveal all information. NARA collaborated with agencies to release 2,672 additional documents with fewer redactions than previous iterations.
Biden administration authorizes timing of CHAF release ?
The newly released Kennedy documents are subject to the President John F. Kennedy Assassination Records Collection Act of 1992 and they are available to view online.(RELATED: Some JFK Assassination Files Are Being Withheld)

NARA’s National Declassification Center (NDC) will continue revealing new information, "as specific identified harm dissipates, then triggering public disclosure," the agency said in a Friday press release.
"Harm"....? Everyone involved is now deceased.
Dr. Colleen Shogan, 11th Archivist of the United States, highlighted the importance of transparency in a statement.
Yes, yes, of course, but timing is everything.
"At the National Archives, we believe in the importance of government transparency and the accessibility of information. The dedicated and detailed work completed by NARA staff and by our partners and stakeholder agencies is an excellent representation of how we can collaborate together to ensure that the maximum amount of information is made available to the American people, while we protect what we must," Shogan said.

Science & Technology
You might want to reconsider 23andMe and other DNA testing companies once you hear what this geneticist has to say
[BLAZE] Millions of people send their DNA to companies like 23andMe and AncestryDNA because they want to find their long-lost siblings, discover their genetic predispositions, or become informed about potential health issues. All good things.

But people who trust these mega-corporations with their genetic codes may get more than they bargained for.

Geneticist Razib Khan joins James Poulos on "Zero Hour" to discuss what he calls "the candid truth" regarding developments in genetic research and the implications of sending your DNA to these types of companies.

"If you really care about your genetic privacy," he says, "don’t do it, because no matter the assurances they give you, don’t believe it. ...This is just, like, the candid truth."

"There have been some issues with China," he continues.

After investing heavily in genomics, a nascent field of study that emerged about twenty years ago, China has "created a genomic superpower," Khan says.

He brings up companies like "Novogene, which [operates] in the United States," and "the issues with data security" that have been swept under the rug.

EV's Fires
[CowboyStateDaily] EV Fires cause Massive Safety, Environmental & Carbon Footprint Issues.

Having a Fireman son in the Metro-Atlanta area. He has shared some interesting EV fire photos.

Needless to say the whole EV proposed replacement of GAS vehicles scene is Gunny Highway C.F.

#1  Many paragraphs down -

According to researchers at Auto Insurance EZ, there are 25.1 EV fires per 100,000 vehicles sold. Gas-powered vehicles, by contrast, caught fire 1,529.9 times per 100,000 vehicles sold.

When it comes to fires, hybrids — vehicles that have an internal combustion engine and also use energy stored in batteries — take the prize. For every 100,000 hybrid vehicles sold, 3,474.5 hybrids caught fire.

#4  Looking at Procopius2k 2023-07-04 07:18 provided data the figures.
I agree the figures as presented are correct

HOWEVER,
I understand, those figures also included years of much OLDER Gas Vehicles than the EV's could have had on the road.

I am currently looking for authoritative data sources that compare Apples to Apples for a fair snapshot of EV-GAS fires per 1000 vehicles say for the years 2018-2022. A data source, NOT heavily invested in the success of EV's of GAS.

Either way, once an EV is on fire it is usually total loss. The burnt out EV vehicle becomes a major HAZMAT problem, resulting in well over a 100++% Negative Carbon - Environmental impact pile. Leaving little, if any recyclable scrap.

Where a Gas vehicle usually has a much-much smaller HAZMAT Impact footprint and has recyclable parts and materials.

Firefighters, of whom 75% are volunteers, have been ringing this bell for years. We want to live to an old age in a capacity where putting water on the wrong stuff will get you dead right there.

And you, in a capacity of vechicle accident, don't want to be in a frame made of materials so light and therefore so strong extrication gets...complicated. You will fit through the rear windshield. What of you we can take.

High levels of toxic chemicals in pets living near US manufacturing plant In Fayetteville, NC
[DNYUZ] Pets living near a PFAS manufacturing plant in Fayetteville, North Carolina have concerning levels of the toxic chemicals in their blood, and show evidence of health effects linked to exposure, new research finds.
Essentially, Forever Chemicals.
PFAS were present in all 32 dog and 31 horse blood samples checked, and the findings provide evidence that human and animal exposures to the chemicals impacts their bodies, said Scott Belcher, a North Carolina State University researcher and co-author.

"It is just consistent with what we’ve seen over and over again, and it makes the case clear that these are toxic compounds," he said.

PFAS are a class of about 15,000 compounds typically used to make products across dozens of industries resistant to water, stains and heat. They are called "forever chemicals" because they do not naturally break down, and are linked to cancer, kidney disease, liver conditions, immune disorders, birth defects and other serious health problems.

PFAS pollution from a Chemours plant in North Carolina has widely contaminated the soil, water and air for hundreds of square miles around the company’s Fayetteville Works plant, and residents say their exposure to the chemicals is behind elevated cancer levels and other serious health problems.

Last year, a team led by Belcher found alligators in the region exposed to high levels of PFAS in the Cape Fear River exhibited signs of disease similar to lupus.

Residents have also said they suspect their pets have gotten sick from exposure to the chemicals. Among them is Adrian Stokes, who last year told the Guardian he has watched helplessly as he, his cats and his dogs seemed to suffer from similar ailments.

#1  What is it ?

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a large, complex group of synthetic chemicals that have been used in consumer products around the world since about the 1950s. They are ingredients in various everyday products. For example, PFAS are used to keep food from sticking to packaging or cookware, make clothes and carpets resistant to stains, and create firefighting foam that is more effective.

PFAS molecules have a chain of linked carbon and fluorine atoms. Because the carbon-fluorine bond is one of the strongest, these chemicals do not degrade easily in the environment.

#1  Ahh, the Egg Beater. Watching the twin rotors spool up was hypnotic.
Saw on the roll out they passed a P-38 on the flight line.
Noticed that when he came in to land, he did a side slip, just like he had a tail rotor.

#3  Wonder what sort of stash of airworthy spares they have? When those blades go hi-time it turns into yard art. A really nice job keeping it flying.

#5  No deviation with the rotor timing light. Four degrees before TDC (top dead center) means 4 degrees TDC. No deviations, no exceptions.

#6  Every time I have looked at that helicopter I wonder if the designer was insane, then I marvel at the people that built it and the mechanics that keep it flying safely (or at least as a helicopter normally is).

#7  Looking at those blades about had me rubbing my eyes. Pretty cool. Kinda has that Citroën "ugly duckling" look to it.
