Afghanistan’s Saffron Exports to India, China and UAE
Another income stream from which the Taliban will help themselves, leaving a pittance for the civilians doing the work.
[KhaamaPress] Afghanistan exported 69 tons of saffron worth $22 million during the previous solar year (March 2022 to March 2023), according to the Ministry of Industry and Commerce.

According to a statement from the Ministry, China, India, and the United Arab Emirates, received most of the saffron exports.

Afghanistan’s saffron is regarded as the best in the world and has received a three-star distinction from the European International Organization in Taste.

For the eighth year in a row, saffron grown and manufactured in Afghanistan has been deemed the highest-quality saffron in the world, according to a member of the Saffron Producers Union in Kabul.

Herat
...a venerable old Persian-speaking city in western Afghanistan, populated mostly by Tadjiks, which is why it's not as blood-soaked as areas controlled by Pashtuns...
Province produces most of Afghanistan’s saffron; in most areas, saffron cultivation has replaced opium.

Saffron is uniquely placed to be a viable alternative in Afghanistan.

One kg of saffron may be purchased for up to $4,500 worldwide, costing at least $1,400 to 1,800 in Afghanistan.

Girls Can Get Forms for Kankor Test, Nangarhar Education Official Says
The Taliban are not unanimous about the appropriate limitations on girls...

......
[ToloNews] The Nangarhar
The unfortunate Afghan province located adjacent to Mohmand, Kurram, and Khyber Agencies. The capital is Jalalabad. The province was the fief of Younus Khalis after the Soviets departed and one of his sons is the current provincial Taliban commander. Nangarhar is Haqqani country..
Department of Education's front man, Farhad Ahmad Stanekzai, said that the distribution of Kankor test forms to graduates of the 1401 (solar year) who passed the 12th grade test has started.

Stanekzai told TOLOnews that female students who have passed the 12th grade test can also obtain these forms from their schools.

"Those of our sisters who are living in the warm areas of Nangarhar
...whatever that means...
and have passed their 12th grade exam but were deprived of the entrance exam due to some problems, and those girls who went to their respective schools, have received Kankor exam forms," the spokesperson told TOLOnews.

Girls who graduated from school welcomed the process of distributing exam forms for girls.

Mina, a graduate of the 12th grade, said her hopes for the reopening of the universities has been reignited since learning about the release of the Kankor test forms for girls.

"This is hopeful for all the girls that we can continue our lessons," she said.

"It is too difficult for a girl who has not studied for three years and has to go pass the test," said Asma, a student.

Some girls asked the Islamic Emirate to reopen schools and universities for girls.

"Access to education is our right, which we are deprived of now," said Fatema, a student.

"We ask the Islamic Emirate to reopen schools for us the same as it is open for boys," said Arezo, another student.

Nearly 590 days have passed since the schools were closed to female students, and there has been no word on their reopening.

Anti-war watchdog warns against expansion of armed conflict in Sudan
Or what?
[SUDANTRIBUNE] An anti-war watchdog in Sudan has warned against the expansion of the armed conflict in Khartoum between the Sudanese armed forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) that broke out nearly two weeks ago.

In a weekly bulletin issued on Thursday, the Sudan Conflict Observer (SCO) said that "the army prepare to launch a new offensive on the RSF troops which are spread in residential neighbourhoods and public buildings in Khartoum."

"With RSF fighters sheltering in civilian buildings the fighting may be more intense and concentrated than during previous phases," said the SCO which is composed of Ayin, Human Rights Hub and the Sudan Transparency and Policy Tracker.

"Sudanese belligerents accepted to meet in Juba on Friday to discuss a permanent ceasefire with a mechanism to monitor its implementation," the report said.

However,
there's more than one way to skin a cat...
on the same day, "the army commander-in-chief Gen Abdel Fattah al-Burhan excluded to negotiate with the RSF commander Mohammed Hamdan Daglo Hemetti."

The anti-war watchdog further said that "the festivities in West Darfur between the Sudanese army and RSF turbans draw civilians into the fighting along tribal lines."

Sudan's army leader says he did not send a delegation to Juba
[SUDANTRIBUNE] The commander-in-chief of the Sudanese army stated that they had only "accepted in principle" the IGAD initiative to stop the war and emphasized that they did not send a delegation to Juba.

South Sudan, IGAD, the Trilateral Mechanism, and the Quad announced a meeting in Juba of the Sudanese warring parties to negotiate a permanent ceasefire that would pave the way for a return to the negotiating table and the resumption of the political process.

In an interview with U.S.-funded TV Alhurra, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan said that there were several initiatives to stop the war, which has affected the Sudanese people and the region. He added that they received an initiative from the IGAD countries through "our brothers in South Sudan," and "in principle," they welcomed this initiative.

"But we did not appoint a representative, and we did not send a delegation (to Juba)," he further stressed.

He also said that the RSF leader did not agree to send a representative to Juba.

The United Nations
...boodling on the grand scale...
, African Union
...a union consisting of 53 African states, most run by dictators of one flavor or another. The only all-African state not in the AU is Morocco. Established in 2002, the AU is the successor to the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), which was even less successful...
, IGAD, the UN’s five permanent members and the Arab League
...an organization of Arabic-speaking states with 22 member countries and four observers. The League tries to achieve Arab consensus on issues, which usually leaves them doing nothing but a bit of grimacing and mustache cursing...
called for the immediate resumption of the political process, through dialogue and negotiations to establish a transitional civilian-led government.

Al-Burhan questioned Hemetti’s recent remarks that he wanted to restore democracy in Sudan and asked how a tribal militia could talk about restoring democracy.

"We know the objectives of the RSF and what their purposes are. They want to take over this country. We know very well what their intentions are and who they were negotiating with," he added.

He went on to say that he thought the RSF leadership accepted the merger, but later it became clear to him that their real intention was not to merge. He reiterated the need for the "demise of the Rapid Support Forces either by negotiations" leading to their integration into the national army "or fighting them."

On Friday, both sides accused each other of violating the ceasefire, and the fighting continued in Khartoum and the outskirts of the capital.

Al-Burhan’s rhetoric during the interview seemed critical towards the signatories of the political framework agreement, which is aimed at restoring transitional civilian rule, but he did not take a clear stance against them.

Dbiebah: Turkey is the best example of a successful state
Compared to Libya, definitely. Compared to actual successful states...
[LIBYAOBSERVER.LY] The Libyan Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibah said on Saturday that The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire...
is the most prominent example of a successful state model.

Dbeibah's remarks came during his speech at the Technofest Festival for Aviation and Space Technology at Ataturk Airport in Istanbul, with the participation of Ottoman Turkish President His Enormity, Sultan Recep Tayyip Erdogan the First
...Turkey's version of Mohammed Morsi but they voted him back in so they deserve him. It's a sin, a shame, and a felony to insult the president of Turkey. In Anatolia did Recep Bey a stately Presidential Palace decree, that has 1100 rooms. That's 968 more than in the White House, 400 more than in Versailles, and 325 more than Buckingham Palace, so you know who's really more important...
Referring to President Erdogan's role in building modern Turkey, Dbeibah said: "Turkey is the most prominent example of a successful state model today, and we see a Ottoman Turkish model that serves its people, nation and homeland."

Dbeibah congratulated Turkey on its rise to the group of countries that use nuclear energy, after supplying the Akkuyu nuclear power plant in Mersin with the first shipment of nuclear fuel, pointing out that the station covers 10% of Turkey's electric energy needs.

He stressed that Turkey, under its leadership and government, is showing a firm stance towards all challenges and obstacles through its great capabilities, indicating that Turkey quickly healed the wounds caused by the earthquake of February 6, under the leadership of President Erdogan and the solid position of the Ottoman Turkish people.

Dbiebah stressed that the large number of participants in the Technofest Festival reflects Turkey's progress in the field of space science, aviation and technology, extending thanks to Turkey and Baykar, the leading company in the Ottoman Turkish drone industries, for their contribution to strengthening the air defense systems in Libya.

The activities of the seventh edition of the Technofest Festival, which is the largest of its kind in the world, kicked off Thursday on the grounds of Ataturk Airport under the supervision of the "Ottoman Turkish Technology Team Endowment" and in cooperation with the Ministry of Industry and Technology.

German police remove Muslim child from family over alleged anti-LGBT teachings

......
[Shafaq News] German police took a Moslem child from his family in the city of Bremerhaven after raising concerns that the family was teaching the child that "transgender
...mutton, dressed up as pork...
and "homosexuals" are unacceptable in the religion of Islam.

The police confirmed that the incident occurred this week but did not provide reasons for removing the child from the family. Instead, they claimed that the circulated video was accompanied by "false allegations" and that the child welfare agency is always a last resort, only happening for severe reasons.

The incident occurred as part of a court-ordered procedure aimed at caring for two children. The family members were seen shouting at the officers during the incident, claiming that the child suffers from some health problems.

Congresswoman Ilhan Omar Votes for Withdrawal of U.S. Troops from Somalia
Stopped clock or something more nefarious from the honourable Congresswoman representing Minneapolis and the Muslim Brotherhood?
[Garowe] Congresswoman Ilhan Omar
...Somali-American Dem representative from Minnesota. She was apparently married to her brother and may be her own grandmaw on her mother's side...
, who represents Minnesota's 5th district and was born in Somalia, has taken a public stance on the presence of U.S. troops in Somalia. During a recent congressional debate, Rep. Omar argued in favor of withdrawing American forces from the African nation, asserting that the Somali government should lead the nation-building process.

In her remarks, Rep. Omar expressed her belief that the U.S. military presence in Somalia is not essential to the country's efforts to establish national unity among its various clans. She emphasized the importance of empowering the Somali government to take responsibility for its security and stability rather than relying on foreign intervention.

Congresswoman Omar's position highlights the broader debate surrounding American involvement in Africa, particularly in countries grappling with terrorism and political instability. In the case of Somalia, the U.S. currently has around 900 troops stationed in the country to support local forces in their fight against the bully boy group al-Shabaab
...... Somalia's version of the Taliban, functioning as an arm of al-Qaeda...
The debate also underscores the ongoing discussion about the Authorization for Use of Military Force (AUMF), passed in 2001, which has since been used to justify U.S. military interventions worldwide. Opponents of the AUMF argue that it has become a "global permission slip" for American involvement in conflicts that are not directly related to national security.

Although concerns about the potential risks of withdrawing U.S. troops from Somalia have been raised, Rep. Omar voted in favor of a resolution calling for the withdrawal of American forces. However,
Switzerland makes more than cheese...
the House ultimately defeated the measure, offered by Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL), by 102-321.

The outcome of the vote indicates that a majority of politicians do not support the immediate withdrawal of U.S. troops from Somalia. As a result, the future of American involvement in the African nation remains uncertain. Nonetheless, Congresswoman Ilhan Omar's stance on the issue has sparked a broader conversation about U.S. foreign policy in Africa and the role of military intervention in fostering stability on the continent.

#1  A scorpion and a frog meet each other on the banks of a stream.

The scorpion is on its way to the other side of the bank and but the waters are too treacherous for it to cross.

So the scorpion politely asks the frog to help carry it across the water.

The scorpion tells the frog he is an excellent swimmer with wide back that can easily carry him across.

Suspicious, the frog asks the scorpion, “How do I know you won’t sting me?” The scorpion replies, “Why would I do that? Then we would both drown.”

The frog is still unsure and asks the scorpion more questions.

The scorpion always seems to have a logical answer.

Satisfied with the scorpion’s reasoning, the frog allows the scorpion to climb on his back and they begin their journey across the water.

The waves are high and so the scorpion holds on tight to the frogs body.

However, before they can make it halfway across the stream, the frog feels a sting right in the middle of his back and feels the spread of venom slowly taking over his limbs.

The frog begins to slowly sink under the water and, realizing what has happened, has time to gasp out, “Why did you do that? Now we will both drown and die!”

As the scorpion sinks under with the frog, it replies, “It’s in my nature.”

Centre distances itself from raid on Elahi's residence, blames Punjab govt
[GEO.TV] The federal government Saturday distanced itself from a late-night raid at Pakistain Tehrik-e-Insaf
...a political party in Pakistan. PTI was founded by former Pakistani cricket captain and philanthropist Imran Khan. The party's slogan is Justice, Humanity and Self Esteem, each of which is open to widely divergent interpretations....
(PTI) President Parvez Elahi's residence in Lahore, blaming the Punjab

2.) A province of Pakistain ruled by one of the Sharif brothers
3.) A province of India. It is majority (60 percent) Sikh and Hindoo (37 percent), which means it has relatively few Moslem riots....

caretaker set-up for the incident.
A move even more ham-handed than usual.
A heavy contingent of Punjab Police Friday night stormed Elahi's residence to arrest him, drawing strong criticism from the party, which has been voicing concerns against the arrests of its workers and leaders.

The more than six-hour-long police action came to a halt after Sohail Zafar Chattha, the Director General of Punjab's Anti-Corruption Establishment (ACE), left the scene along with the police contingent.

In this regard, Finance Minister Ishaq Dar held an important meeting with PTI Vice Chairman Shah Mehmood Wormtongue Qureshi
...a Pak political shape-changer. He is undistinguished except for his habit of periodically needing to have his lips reattached...
, who is also spearheading negotiations with the ruling alliance to evolve consensus on holding elections across the country on the same date.

Dar expressed regret over the raid on the PTI president’s house and violation of the sanctity of chadar and char dewari — a phrase used to describe family’s dignity.

During the meeting, Qureshi apprised Dar of the sentiments of the family of Elahi regarding the "illegal attack" at their residence.

"The federal government has nothing to do with the attack on the house of Chaudhry Parvez Elahi," Dar was quoted as saying in the meeting.

The finance minister added that the raid was conducted by the Punjab caretaker government.

Dar said he would inform the ruling alliance's leadership about the reservations of the PTI regarding the police action and would get back to the opposition party on the matter soon.

Meanwhile,
...back at the wreckage, Captain Poindexter wished he had a cup of coffee. Even instant would do...
Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal criticised the PTI leaders for "using women and kiddies" as a shield to evade arrest.

Speaking on Geo News' programme "Naya Pakistain", the federal minister said both PTI Chairman Imran Khan
...aka The Great Khan, who ain't the brightest knife in the national drawer...
and Elahi were not arrested when police conducted a raid at their residence.

"We never used wheelchairs or cried on TV," he said while criticising the PTI’s leaders for raising hue and cry over arrests.

He said PML-N leaders — including its supremo Nawaz Sharif

— faced "bogus cases and political victimisation" during the tenure of the PTI-led government.

Speaking on the same programme, Chaudhry Salik Hussain, PML-Q leader and the nephew of Elahi, said Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif condemned the police raid in a phone call with him

COAS Asim Munir vows to 'further solidify' bond between army and people
[GEO.TV] Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Asim Munir on Saturday reiterated the military's commitment to Pakistain’s stability and vowed to ensure that the bond between the army and the people is preserved and further solidified.

He said this while addressing the passing out parade at Pakistain Military Academy (PMA) in Kakul today.

General Asim Munir, in his first speech at the PMA as the COAS, said that the people of Pakistain are central to the unity of the state and added that the first and foremost is loyalty to the state of Pakistain and commitment to the Constitutional role assigned to armed forces of Pakistain.

"To us, nothing is more sacred than the safety and security of our people and no duty is more binding than the defence of our motherland. Go out now, and deliver to the expectations of your nation," he told the cadets.

"The army imbibes the vision of our great Quaid signifying no distinction of caste, colour, creed, gender or geography."

The COAS noted that Pakistain’s efforts for peace should never be taken as a sign of weakness.

"We have the will, capability and capacity to protect our illusory sovereignty and territorial integrity and we are well aware of the ways and means to do it. I assure the people of Pakistain that we will never hesitate in rendering any and every sacrifice necessary for the defence of our sacred motherland."

He said that the brave soldiers of Pakistain don’t get fascinated with the numbers and resources of their adversaries.

The armed forces of Pakistain stand firm with their strong will and determination while fulfilling the promises of Almighty Allah as true followers, he said.

-ruling terror group has for years appealed for cryptocurrency donations, despite crackdown by Israeli and American authorities

The military wing of the Hamas, the braying voice of Islamic Resistance®, terror group on Thursday announced it would stop raising funds using the Bitcoin cryptocurrency, citing intensifying "hostile" activity against donors.

The Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades has for several years appealed for donations from supporters via Bitcoin to help counter its financial woes.

Cryptocurrency ostensibly provides a high level of anonymity, making them particularly attractive for financing criminal activity or terrorism. Bitcoin has faced criticism over underground websites where people have used the currency to buy drugs and guns.

Israel and the United States have cracked down on Hamas’s cryptocurrency financing efforts, seizing dozens of digital wallets used by the group that rules the Gaza Strip since it launched the initiative in 2019.

In a statement Thursday, the al-Qassam Brigades said it was ending Bitcoin donations "out of concern about the safety of donors and to spare them any harm," adding that it had seen an "intensification of hostile efforts against anyone who tries to support the resistance through this currency."

The terror group has faced financial woes in recent years as banks have sought to ensure they have no dealings with the organization.

Hamas, which seeks to destroy Israel, is considered a terrorist organization by Israel, the United States, the European Union
...the successor to the Holy Roman Empire, only without the Hapsburgs and the nifty uniforms and the dancing...
and others.

Hamas officials say its military wing receives significant support from Iran, although the routes through which these funds are transferred are opaque. Last week, Israel’s Defense Minister Yoav Gallant said Iran
...a theocratic Shiite state divided among the Medes, the Persians, and the (Arab) Elamites. Formerly a fairly civilized nation ruled by a Shah, it became a victim of Islamic revolution in 1979. The nation is today noted for spontaneously taking over other countries' embassies, maintaining whorehouses run by clergymen, involvement in international drug trafficking, and financing sock puppet militias to extend the regime's influence. The word Iran is a cognate form of Aryan. The abbreviation IRGC is the same idea as Stürmabteilung (or SA). The term Supreme Guide is a the modern version form of either Duce or Führer or maybe both. They hate Jews Zionists Jews. Their economy is based on the production of oil and vitriol...
provides Hamas with some $100 million annually.

Government pursues new settlement mechanism in Syria's Daraa
[NPASYRIA] Syrian government pursues a new mechanism to implement the fifth settlement in Daraa Governorate, southern Syria, that has started on Friday, saying that it will be the last settlement for the residents of the governorate.

A local source told North Press that the head of villages, locally known as "muhtars" of the towns in Daraa countryside started calling on those who are wanted by the government to register their names to get settlement cards.

On Friday, Security Committee of the Syrian government demanded the people of Daraa to conduct a new settlement for the status of those wanted.

This is the fifth settlement imposed on the people of Daraa Governorate. The last one was on April 20, 2022, and the first and the biggest one was in September 2018.

In July 2018, opposition factions and Syrian government forces reached an agreement, mediated by Russia, for the opposition-held areas of Daraa.

According to the deal, opposition forces of Evil who agreed to hand over heavy weapons, were handed special cards to protect them from prosecution, and allowed to stay in Daraa. Those opposed the agreement were forced to leave for Idlib, which is under the control of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, formerly al-Nusra, before that it was called something else

The muhtars, heads of municipalities, officers of cop shoppes gave those wanted people until Sunday, according to the source.

Some muhtars called the settlement as "the golden settlement" because it is the last one and will remove the names of those who are wanted by the government authorities from the wanted list.

screeching muppets in Daraa told North Press that the goal of this settlement is to count the number of young men in the governorate, especially in areas out of its control.

The purpose of the settlement is to reveal the number of those who oppose the government, subject Daraa and increase the spread of Iranian-backed militia, according to the self-proclaimed geniuss.

A-10s Return to Middle East with a New Mission, and a New Weapon
The Israel Times reports that the Wall Street Journal reports that the things are carrying bunker busters as a message to Iran.
[DefenseOne] Tensions with Iran, Russia have CENTCOM calling upon the venerable Warthog once again.

A squadron of A-10 Thunderbolt II attack jets, specially modified to nearly triple their bomb loads, has been dispatched to the Middle East to boost U.S. airpower in the region amid increased tensions with Iran-backed forces in Syria.

The Warthogs will get software updates enabling them to carry up to 16 Small Diameter Bombs within weeks, said Lt. Gen. Alexus Grynkewich, who leads Air Forces Central Command.

#1  .....On the one hand, way overdue - SDB has been out there long enough that the Hog should have been first in line to get certified for as many as it can carry.

On the other hand...as hard is this for me to say, the Ukraine or any other P2P conflict is no place for that beast.

#2  CNN: Remember this? "Will the Pentagon kill off the Warthog?" By Gabe Ramirez, May 7, 2015
Is the A-10 headed for the graveyard? The A-10s Last Dance.
The A-10 Thunderbolt II is a lumbering, old airplane. Taking its first flight in 1975, it was not designed for air-to-air combat like the F-15 Eagle. It’s not sleek or stealthy like the F-22 Raptor. ... But what it lacks in performance and good looks, it makes up for with pure brute punching power. If the F-15 is the Tom Brady of the Air Force, the A-10 is Lawrence Taylor. It is arguably one of the most important post-9/11 aerial fighters in the USA arsenal. It is also close to being put out to pasture. ...the most dangerous foe the aircraft has is budget sequestration and shifting Air Force priorities, not ground fire. ...the venerable warbird is only surviving year to year and may soon be eliminated.
Budget sequestration has put a serious strain on Air Force funds, and the Pentagon leadership thinks the A-10 is too expensive to maintain under the current spending limits when other aircraft can fill similar roles. (Hah!) ..The original goal was to retire the A-10 as the F-35 came online, but the F-35 is still a long way from deployment.

#3  Good way to "kill them off" is to overuse them in little proxy wars or send them to places where they might get shot down.

#4  The A-10s are largely "sunk costs" so burning them up (instead of brand new F-35s) makes the bean counters smile...
