Thursday's outage
Rantburg.com had a major blackout, for about four hours, because of a power outage. Could not be helped.

The outage was a blessing because I found out the backup server had not backed up anything since November 23rd of last year. This was due in part to a subtle change, I am told, of how postgresql database handles some objects.

How do you miss a major function of a backup server after almost four months? One of my non-major email accounts continually was getting updates from the two main scripts used to update the server, once every hour, like clockwork. The scripts in the mainserver suffered the outage which sent data to the backup server, without updating the data, without really backing it up.

The backup server can be accessed here, -- but be advised --it doesn't have a secure socket layer, so your browser will bitch and moan about it being insecure. Also two browsers, Chrome and MS Edge, may not even load the page. You'll have to replace the https with http to see it.

Rules on accessing the server applies. It will be fully operational at about 25 minutes after the hour. Between the top of the hour and then, it is repopulating the database from backed up data, which it should do every hour on the hour.

That is another issue to be fixed soon: an SSL certificate to be applied to it and some other subdomains I own.

We have a backup oclub here, which is a severely deprecated message board that only allows some texts messages, and not much else.

There is a Discord server, which you can access through this invite: https://discord.gg/CmkfNrHM

The link has a life of seven days, so if it doesn't work, let me know.

One last item: a round (booze or applause) for the mods fighting off the forces of darkness and evil Wednesday, who were spamming Rantburg.com.

Omdurman mosque fire sparks controversy: Sudanese army blames RSF
[SUDANTRIBUNE] A massive fire heavily damaged the mosque and dome of the late Sufi leader Sheikh Hassan al-Fatih Qaribullah in Omdurman’s Wad Nubawi area. The fire also affected the site housing the Sheikh’s grave.

In a statement to Sudan
...a Moslem country located in the Horn of Africa. It is noted for its affinity for rule by ex- or current generals, its holy men, and for the oppression of the native Afro population by its Arab conquerors. South Sudan, populated mostly by the natives, split off from Sudan proper, which left North and South Darfur to be oppressed by the guys with turbans...
Tribune, Sheikh Hassan al-Fateh’s son refuted claims that his father’s grave was exhumed. He clarified that the fire caused internal structural damage and a kaboom inside the dome, exposing the wooden grave cover. He added that despite knowing the mosque had been attacked, they remained silent and prevented filming to avoid stoking tensions without clear information.

Leaked video clips by Sudanese army soldiers showed the destruction and accused the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) of being responsible. The videos sparked social media controversy, with accusations flying between the army and RSF supporters. Some blamed krazed killer groups, citing Sudan’s security vacuum, while others pointed to the RSF’s past control of Wad Nubawi.

A prominent RSF leader, speaking on condition of anonymity
... for fear of being murdered...
, categorically denied involvement. He blamed the fire on "Takfiri
...an adherent of takfir wal hijra, an offshoot of Salafism that regards everybody who doesn't agree with them as apostates who must be killed...
s and ISIS", who, according to him, are fighting alongside the army. He further claimed the army recently sought help from krazed killer militias who are now active in Omdurman.

The RSF leader emphasized their withdrawal from Wad Nubawi on March 3rd and asserted that they protected mosques throughout their presence, including the one in question. He concluded by urging the international community to address the growing threat of terrorism in Sudan, a danger to the region and the world.

Somali pirates resurface, raising concerns for global shipping
[AFRICANEWS] A recent incident involving Somali pirates has underscored the renewed threat they pose to global shipping. In the western Indian Ocean, a Bangladeshi-owned bulk carrier fell victim to pirates, signaling a resurgence of piracy in the region.

This development adds to the challenges already faced by shipping companies, including drone and missile strikes by Yemen

militia.

Since November, there have been over 20 attempted hijackings, leading to increased costs for armed security guards and insurance coverage. Somali pirates, seizing the opportunity presented by reduced naval operations, are once again active after nearly a decade of relative dormancy.

While the current level of activity is not as severe as in the past, it is a cause for concern among regional officials and industry experts.

The situation has led to higher shipping costs, with additional war risk premiums and increased prices for private armed guards.

While the Indian Navy's intervention has resulted in the rescue of hostages, challenges persist in securing maritime routes off the coast of Somalia. Efforts to address this resurgence are underway, but the threat posed by Somali pirates remains a pressing issue for the shipping industry.

STC-affiliated leader injured in landmine explosion
[HODHODYEMENNEWS.NET] A leader affiliated with the UAE-backed Southern Transitional Council (STC)’s factions was injured on Wednesday, in a kaboom of a landmine in the province of Abyan

The New York Times fastidiously reported that those in control, while Islamic hard boyz, are not in fact al-Qaeda, but something else that looks, tastes, smells, and acts the same. Pro-STC Media sources reported that the chief of staff of the so-called "Second Battalion in the Sixth Support Brigade," Mahmoud Braber, was maimed in a kaboom of a landmine he attempted to dismantle in Wadi Omran in the district of Mudiyah east of the city of Zinjibar, the bucolic provincial capital.

According to the sources, Braber fired at the landmine to detonate it and neutralize its effect, but unidentified individuals remotely executed the detonation of the landmine.

He was then transferred to one of the hospitals in Aden, the sources said.

Caribbean-Latin America
Curfew extended in Haiti's capital as gang violence continues to escalate
[AFRICANEWS] The curfew in Ouest, one of Haiti's ten departments has been extended until March 23, authorities said Wednesday (Mar. 20).

Gang violence continues to escalate in the south-central department which hosts the jurisdictional seat of the capital city.

The escalating violence and unrest have severely disrupted daily life in Port-au-Prince.

The turmoil has left at least dozens dead, displacing thousands who seek refuge wherever they can find it.

"Some people who have no choice but to flee their home, some of them go into the school, the public school, to use them for shelter. And some hospitals, the main hospital in Port-au-Prince, is not really operational from our visit. The hospital is like empty. There are no nurses, there are no doctors to take care of patients and the patients don't go to the main hospital of Port-au-Prince to look for care," China Global Television Network (CGTN) news hound Wilner Bossou said.

The violence has deepened Haiti's political crisis and prompted the Prime Minister to pledge that he will resign, a key demand of the gangs.

Since late February, armed gangs have attacked public institutions including the capital's cop shoppes and the international airport which remains closed.

During the curfew and state of emergency imposed in early March, "the police are ordered to use all legal means at their disposal" to enforce order.

Armed groups have disrupted fuel supplies, preventing fuel trucks from entering the strategic Varreux fuel terminal in Haiti's capital and leaving gas stations deserted.

"As for the gas station, for the past two weeks, there was a gas shortage, which led multiple people, the population to bring cans, so they can find gas to stock in order to cope with the gas shortage. This is the situation today in Port-au-Prince, the capital, which is under attack every day. There is no day passed without listening or hearing some heavy, heavy, heavy attack and heavy guns shootings," Bossou reported.

Since the liquidation of President Jovenel Moise in July 2021, the grip of gangs and criminal groups has tightened. Haiti Prime minister had pledged to pass on the baton on February 7 this year but elections failed to materialize, leading to social unrest.

Henry announced on March 12 that he would resign once a transitional presidential council is created.

Three residents of Ingushetia accused of aiding terrorists
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.
[KavkazUzel] The investigation charged three residents of Ingushetia with illegal arms trafficking and aiding terrorists. The accused have been arrested.
Could be Caucasus Emirate/ISIS or Hizb-ut-Tahrir, could be support for Ukraine, could be something else altogether. The article does not even hint, and I can’t find anything illuminating on the internet. This article from 11/23/2023 is the only thing in the Rantburg archives that might possibly be related to the current story.
As the "Caucasian Knot" reported, on March 5 it became known that the investigative authorities of Ingushetia opened a criminal case against three people for aiding members of a terrorist organization and storing weapons.

Charges of aiding terrorists (Part 5 of Article 33, Part 2 of Article 205.5 of the Criminal Code of Russia), illegal trafficking in explosive devices (Part 3 of Article 222.1 of the Criminal Code of Russia) and firearms (Part 3 of Article 222 of the Criminal Code of Russia) were brought against three residents of Ingushetia, it reported today the Russian Investigative Committee for Ingushetia.

According to investigators, in November 2023, the accused, aged 26, 28 and 33 years old, on behalf of a member of a terrorist organization who was wanted for committing crimes of a terrorist nature, purchased automatic firearms and ammunition and stored them for subsequent transfer to members of the terrorist organization. The court, at the request of the investigator, chose a preventive measure against the accused in the form of detention, the department said in a statement.

Let us remind you that on March 3, during the counter-terrorism operation (CTO) in Karabulak, security forces killed six suspected militants. On March 5, sources reported that Amirkhan Gurazhev, Zelimkhan Tsuroev, Magomed Barkinkhoev, Tagir Tsuroev, Mikail Tutaev and Bers Chemurziev were killed. No losses among security forces were officially reported; according to Kommersant, five FSB officers were injured during the counter-terrorism operation in Karabulak.

On the evening of March 2, a counter-terrorist operation regime was introduced in one of the blocks in the center of Karabulak. The National Anti-Terrorism Committee (NAC) reported that the militants, while trying to detain them, opened fire on the security forces, a shootout ensued, and residents of nearby houses were evacuated. On March 3, NAC announced that   six Islamic State militants were killed in the shootout, three of whom were on the federal wanted list. The "Caucasian Knot" has prepared a report " How the special operation took place in Karabulak."

‘Burning object’ thrown at Israeli embassy in The Hague, suspect arrested
[IsraelTimes] Police say no injuries; local media reports building was evacuated; embassy says incident is evidence of ‘worrisome consequences of growing hate and incitement’.

Dutch police said on Thursday they had arrested someone suspected of throwing a burning object at Israel’s embassy in The Hague, which is under heavy security amid the war in Gaza.

Neither the police nor embassy officials gave any description of the object. No one was wounded during the incident, police said in a post on social media platform X, without giving more details.

Israel’s Foreign Ministry is aware of the incident and overseeing the response on the ground, a ministry spokesperson told The Times of Israel.

began last October.

All staff from the embassy, which moved in recent years from the city center to a quieter area in the beachside Scheveningen neighborhood, were safe and evacuated from the building, according to De Telegraaf daily.

Security has been stepped up around Israeli embassies across the world as the country’s military presses an offensive in Gaza following the brutal October 7 attack by Paleostinian terror group Hamas that opened the war.

Hundred Illegals Battle 7 Texas State Guardsmen At The El Paso Border
[YouTube]

A hundred illegal immigrants tear away a section of razor wire and fence and then battle Texas State guardsmen who filled the gap in the torn down fence. The mob eventually gets past the guardsmen but are stopped by a stronger secondary barrier and one other state guardsmen.
More at the NY Post article.
From the Texas Military Department Website:
The Texas Military Department is composed of the three branches of the military in the state of Texas. These branches are the Texas Army National Guard, the Texas Air National Guard, and the Texas State Guard. All three branches are administered by the state Adjutant General, an appointee of the Governor of Texas, and fall under the command of the Governor.

#18  Sonic and ultrasonic weapons (USW) are weapons of various types that use sound to injure or incapacitate an opponent. Some sonic weapons make a focused beam of sound or of ultrasound; others produce an area field of sound. As of 2023 military and police forces make some limited use of sonic weapons.

Use and deployment

An NYPD officer stands ready with the LRAD 500X at an Occupy Wall Street protest on November 17, 2011 near the city hall.
"Extremely high-power sound waves can disrupt or destroy the eardrums of a target and cause severe pain or disorientation. This is usually sufficient to incapacitate a person. Less powerful sound waves can cause humans to experience nausea or discomfort."

IDF says it downed ‘suspicious aerial target’ coming from Red Sea
[IsraelTimes] The IDF says a "suspicious aerial target" heading toward Israel from the direction of the Red Sea was downed by air defenses.

The target did not enter Israeli airspace, the IDF says, adding that the incident is over.

Residents of Eilat, Israel’s southernmost city, reported hearing a large blast.

to secure an extended truce and hostage deal.

According to the IDF, at least 358 of the detainees were confirmed to be members of terror groups.

The IDF said that Islamic Jihad operatives holed up at the medical center surrendered to troops, including Hussam Salameh, the commander of PIJ’s observation and intelligence unit in Gaza City, and his brother, Wissam Salameh, head of the terror group’s propaganda unit in Gaza City.

In an evening presser, IDF Spokesman Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari detailed additional senior PIJ operatives who were captured by troops at Shifa, including the commander of the terror group’s Shejaiya Battalion, the deputy commander of PIJ’s Northern Gaza Brigade, and a PIJ commander charged with the terror group’s tunnels in northern Gaza.

Also captured at Shifa were three senior officers in Hamas’s so-called West Bank headquarters, which is tasked with advancing attacks against Israel from the West Bank, the army said.

The Shin Bet named them as Amr Asida, the head of the Nablus unit; Mahmoud Qawasmeh, one of the planners of the 2014 kidnapping and murder of three Israeli teens; and Hamdallah Hassan Ali, who was also involved in directing recent attacks in the West Bank.

Hagari said there were additional "very significant" senior Hamas commanders who were captured by troops at Shifa, but that their identities could not immediately be disclosed due to their ongoing interrogations.

He added that there was still a group of terror operatives holed up at Shifa’s emergency room, and the IDF was working to evacuate civilians from the area first before battling them.

The Shifa operation, now in its fourth day, began as Israel sent a delegation to Doha for negotiations of a truce and the release of 134 hostages held in Gaza — not all of them alive — since Hamas’s brutal October 7 onslaught.

IDF Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi said Thursday after assessing the Shifa operation that it was "very important for pressuring Hamas, it’s very important for pressuring the negotiations."

On Tuesday, Qatar-based Hamas chief Ismail Haniyeh
...became Prime Minister of Gaza after the legislative elections of 2006 which Hamas won. charged that the operation had revealed an "endeavor to undermine ongoing negotiations in Doha."

Hamas accused Israel of killing "dozens of displaced people, patients and medical staff" during the raid at Shifa, though on Wednesday IDF Spokesman Daniel Hagari said that "until now, no civilians, doctors, medical teams — none have been hurt."

The detained terror suspects were taken to Israel for further interrogation by the Shin Bet.

According to the IDF, troops have so far killed more than 140 button men in the raid, which began early Monday and is being carried out by the 401st Armored Brigade, the Navy’s Shayetet 13 commando unit, and other forces.

During scans of the hospital, the only partially working medical facility in the north of the Strip, the IDF said soldiers seized weapons and intelligence documents "that contribute to the continued fighting."

The fighting at Shifa was ongoing and expected to last several more days until all terror operatives in the area were captured or killed, according to military officials.

Defense Minister Yoav Gallant on Thursday hailed the ongoing raid, which he said "surprised the terrorists."

"Nobody expected us to do what we did. There was an assault on a location that half a year ago took us a month to reach; now we did it in a flash," Gallant said to soldiers of the 414th Combat Intelligence Collection Unit, adding that terror operatives still holed up at the hospital "are considering their future: surrender or death."

In southern Gaza, meanwhile, the IDF on Thursday released footage captured by a drone showing a Hamas gunman waiting to ambush troops inside a building in the Hamad Town residential complex in Khan Younis, in an operation that was wrapped up earlier this week.

The gunman, after being spotted, was killed by troops of the elite Egoz commando unit, the IDF said.

Israel says it puts no limit on humanitarian aid for Gaza and blames slow aid delivery on a lack of capacity or inefficiency among UN agencies. An Israel official told The Times of Israel that some 200 aid trucks were expected to enter Gaza on Thursday, in addition to 77 aid packages airdropped by Jordan. On Wednesday night, 15 trucks filled with aid successfully made their way from the southern Gaza Strip to the north, where it has been more difficult to get food.

Tedros said the WHO was particularly concerned about the military operations inside and around the Shifa Hospital complex.

“A planned mission to Al Shifa today had to be canceled due to lack of security… Once again, we call for healthcare to be protected and not militarized.”

International law states that the use of a healthcare facility by an armed party for belligerent acts in a conflict makes that site a legitimate military target.

Iraqi Resistance launches new operation against Israeli targets
Will Israel notice?
[HODHODYEMENNEWS.NET] The Islamic Resistance® in Iraq announced that its fighters have launched a new operation against "Israeli" targets in the occupied territories in support of the Paleostinian people in Gazoo

"The Mujahideen of the Islamic Resistance® in Iraq targeted, at dawn today, Thursday, 3/21/2024, by a Kamikaze drone, the electricity generation station in Tel Aviv in occupied territories," the resistance said in a statement.
Tel Aviv is within Israel’s 1948 borders. The only way that counts as “occupied” is if the Jews are forbidden even so much as one square inch of territory anywhere between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean, partnering the so-called Islamic Resistance in Iraq — and Iranian sock-puppet — with Hamas and Iran’s other tools in the genocidal attempt to eradicate Jews from the planet, starting with Israel and spreading out from there.
The resistance vowed "We will continue to destroy enemy strongholds in completion of the second phase of operations to resist the occupation, and to support our people in Gaza, and in response to the Zionist massacres against defenseless Paleostinian civilians,"

On Wednesday, The Islamic Resistance® in Iraq said its fighters attacked Ben Gurion Airport twice in one week using drones.

"The fighters of the Islamic Resistance® in Iraq, at dawn today, Tuesday, 20-3-2024, targeted Ben-Gurion airport in the Zionist depth using drones," the resistance said.

Israeli forces arrest 25 Palestinians, including children, during West Bank raids
[GEO.TV] At least 25 Paleostinians, including two children and former detainees, have been arrested during raids across the occupied West Bank by the Israeli forces, besides declaring it a closed military zone on Thursday.

The occupation forces used 50 military vehicles and bulldozers to carry out raids at Nur Shams refugee camp in Tulkarem, the official Paleostinian news agency WAFA reported, adding that four Paleostinians were also killed during the raid.

The martyred Paleostinians were identified as Ahmad Ahmad Marwan Mahammad Abu Ali, 22, and Abdullah Mahmoud al-Qaisi, 20, WAFA reported quoting medical sources, adding that Nidal Mamoun Abu Obaid, 23, and Iyad Nidal Azmi Kanouh, 19, were also martyred after Israeli drones targeted a site in the al-Manshiya neighborhood of the Nur Shams camp.

After conducting searches and subjecting residents to interrogation, the occupation forces withdrew after causing large-scale destruction of the infrastructure such as roads in the Jabal al-Saleheen neighborhood of the camp.

The Israeli take on events:
At least 10 West Bank Palestinians killed in strikes, clashes with Israeli forces in past day

[IsraelTimes] At least ten Paleostinians in the West Bank have been killed in IDF strikes or while clashing with Israeli forces over the past day, according to official figures from the Paleostinian Authority.

The toll includes four terror operatives targeted in Jenin by a drone, one of whom died of his wounds today, as well as four in the Nur Shams refugee camp near Tulkarem, two of whom were killed in an Arclight airstrike
...KABOOM!...
and the other two in shootouts with Israeli troops.

It also includes a 19-year-old Paleostinian shot in al-Bireh near Ramallah, according to the Paleostinian Authority’s health ministry, and another man shot in the area of Jericho. They were both fatally maimed during confrontations with Israeli forces.

Additionally, a Paleostinian convert to Judaism was rubbed out by a reservist soldier in the southern West Bank. The military has opened an investigation into the shooting, which it called a "serious incident," after Hebrew media outlets reported the man had his hands in the air when shot.

Border cops detain Palestinian near Jericho allegedly set to carry out suicide bombing

[IsraelTimes] Border Police officers detained a Palestinian man in the West Bank who allegedly planned to carry out a suicide bombing, law enforcement officials say.

Undercover officers raided the Aqbat Jabr refugee camp near Jericho following intelligence provided by the Shin Bet security agency on a suspect who was planning to commit a suicide bombing in the “immediate time-frame,” police say.

The suspect was captured following a brief chase, which also included a gun battle with other Palestinians in the area.

Police say the officers returned fire at three suspects hurling explosive devices and shooting at the troops. One of them was killed, according to Palestinian health officials.

The detained suspect was handed over to the Shin Bet for questioning.

IDF says it wrapped up counter-terror operation in West Bank’s Nur Shams refugee camp

[IsraelTimes] The IDF says it has wrapped up its brigade-level counter-terrorism operation in the West Bank’s Nur Shams refugee camp, close to Tulkarem.

The raid was launched late last night, and began with a deadly Arclight airstrike
...KABOOM!...
on two Paleostinians who were allegedly hurling bombs at troops.

The IDF releases footage showing the airstrike in Nur Shams.

The IDF says troops detained three wanted Paleostinians and uncovered bombs hidden under the roads in the camp during the operation.

Troops killed two more button men in Nur Shams amid a shootout, and seized an assault rifle from one, the IDF says.

In a separate operation in Ramallah, the IDF says troops shot up suspects hurling stones, bombs, and launching fireworks.

Paleostinian health officials say a 16-year-old boy was killed.

Since October 7, the IDF says troops have arrested some 3,600 wanted Paleostinians across the West Bank, including more than 1,600 affiliated with Hamas

IDF troops shoot, injure Palestinian found to have knife in bag at West Bank checkpoint

[IsraelTimes] A Palestinian man arrived at a checkpoint in the West Bank with a knife in his bag and was shot by soldiers, Hebrew-language media reports.

The Ynet news site reports the knife was found during a search of the man’s possessions. The Kan public broadcaster says the incident occurred near the Elazar intersection in Gush Etzion.

It is unclear what prompted the troops to open fire.

The man is reportedly wounded in his lower body.

There is no comment from the Israel Defense Forces.

’s Tayr Harfa on Thursday afternoon, the military said, after multiple projectiles, including anti-tank missiles, were fired at northern Israel’s Metula from Lebanon.

Additionally, three Hezbollah sites in Yaroun, Yarine and Ayta ash-Shab and three buildings in Mays al-Jabal and Houla were targeted, according to an IDF statement.

There were no reports of injuries in the attacks from Lebanon, but damage to a building was reported in Metula. Rocket warning sirens sounded throughout Thursday afternoon and evening in largely evacuated northern towns and cities including Kiryat Shmona, Ramot Naftali, Shlomi, Tel Hai, Beit Hillel, Kfar Yuval and Avivim, which also hosts a military base.

The IDF said fighter jets also struck a building used by Hezbollah in southern Lebanon’s Kafr Kila on Thursday, after striking another building in Dhayra overnight Wednesday.

The IDF added that it shelled the launch sites of rockets fired from Lebanon overnight toward the Upper Galilee’s Kibbutz Yiftah.

On Thursday morning, Lebanon’s An-Nahar newspaper reported a "large and unprecedented" deployment of armed Hezbollah members on the streets in the southern Beirut suburb of Dahiya, a stronghold of the terror group. The report said the terror group members were masked and checking the identities of individuals walking on the streets. In addition to being dominated by Hezbollah, the neighborhood was home to Hamas

deputy leader Saleh al-Arouri, killed in a January strike widely attributed to Israel.

Judicial officials in Lebanon said on Thursday an investigative judge had issued arrest warrants for two people on suspicion of giving information to Israel, including the digital mapping of a Beirut street where Arouri was killed.

The officials said that Fadi Sawwan, the investigative judge at the military tribunal, issued the arrest warrants earlier this week for the two Lebanese citizens weeks after they were detained while using sophisticated digital mapping equipment.

Speaking on condition of anonymity in line with regulations, the officials said the two men had earlier mapped streets in different parts of Lebanon, including in Beirut’s southern suburbs that are home to the Hezbollah leadership. The men reportedly said they thought they were sending the information to a US-based virtual tourism company.

The officials said that the two suspects had mapped the street on which Arouri was killed nearly two weeks before the hit.

The two were said to be in jug, charged with spying for a foreign country and obtaining information that should remain secret because of national security, and facing life sentences.
