Afghan woman beaten to death for allegedly burning Koran
[Al Ahram] An Afghan woman was beaten to death and her body was set on fire by a mob in Kabul Thursday for allegedly burning a copy of the Koran, police officials said.
Moslems worship a book as an idol. Books are cheaper than golden calves.
"A woman burned a copy of the Koran in the Shahi Doshamshira neighbourhood," the head of Kabul's criminal police General Farid Afzali told AFP.

The woman's body was then thrown into the Kabul River, Afzali added.

The police were trying to disperse the angry crowd of "thousands of people" who had gathered in the densely populated neighbourhood, he said.

Interior ministry front man Sediq Sediqqi also confirmed the incident, saying a probe into the "very unfortunate" event was underway.

Photos of the attack were circulating on social media late Thursday.

Yemeni president accuses former regime of attempted coup
[Al Ahram] Yemeni President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi described an attack on his palace in the city of Aden on Thursday as an attempted coup backed by the previous regime.

"The failure of the military coup ... was backed by the former regime, which was one of the perpetrators of extermination, murder and displacement," he said in a statement.

Earlier on Thursday, a warplane attacked the presidential palace in Aden where Hadi has been based since being pushed out of the capital Sanaa by Houthi

Hussein Badreddin al-Houthi is said to be the spiritual leader of the group and most of the military leaders are his relatives. The Yemeni government has accused the Houthis of having ties to the Iranian government, which wouldn't suprise most of us. The group has managed to gain control over all of Saada Governorate and parts of Amran, Al Jawf and Hajjah Governorates. Caucasus/Russia/Central Asia
Has Chechnya's Kadyrov blackmailed the Kremlin?
In all the hoopla over Vladimir Putin resurfacing, a pretty important news item managed to slip below the radar.

On March 16, the same day the Kremlin leader appeared, Interfax quoted an unidentified law- enforcement official as saying that the assassination of Boris Nemtsov has been reclassified from a "contract killing" to a "hate crime."

The report is still unconfirmed. But if the official line becomes that this was not a contract killing, then there is no need to investigate who put out the contract.

There is no need to look beyond Zaur Dadayev and the others rounded up in connection with the hit.

There is no need to ask any uncomfortable — and destabilizing — questions.

By targeting Dadayev — the former deputy commander of a paramilitary unit formed by Kadyrov and run by the Chechen leader's cousin, Adam Delimkhanov — the Federal Security Service (FSB) seemed to be ultimately targeting Kadyrov.

And now it appears that Kadyrov has successfully beaten back the FSB's assault.

It was amid this turmoil that Putin vanished from public view on March 5, just six days after Nemtsov was assassinated and three days before Dadayev was charged.

"Putin appeared, live and legitimate, at exactly the same moment when Interfax reported that the Nemtsov assassination wasn't a contract hit," political analyst Leonid Volkov wrote on Facebook.

"Putin had to make a choice. Either feed Kadyrov to the FSB-men, or give up the FSB to Kadyrov. It's a difficult and unpleasant choice ... And he chose the one and only thing he could choose: Kadyrov."
A tribute — and a threat

Over the 10 days, 21 hours, four minutes, and 20 seconds that Putin was holed up in an undisclosed location — before turning up in St. Petersburg on March 16 for a meeting with Kyrgyz President Almazbek Atambaev -- a lot of weird stuff happened.

Kadyrov publicly praised Dadayev, went to a shooting range to pop a few rounds, and posted the video on Instagram. The Chechen leader also posted a letter on Instagram expressing his enduring loyalty to Putin.

"I will always be grateful to Vladimir Vladimirovich for everything he has done for me and for my people," Kadyrov wrote.

"I will always be his faithful companion, regardless of whether he is president or not. To give one's life for such a person is an easy task."

But within the profession of loyalty, there was also a veiled threat -- one that was punctuated by the shooting range outing. I am loyal, Kadyrov seemed to be saying. But others may not be. And taking me down carries risks.

Europe
France unveils new spying rules in wake of jihadist attacks
[Al Ahram] La Belle France has never faced so great a terrorist threat, its prime minister said Thursday, as he unveiled controversial new laws allowing spies to hoover up phone and Internet data from suspected jihadists.

The measures have been criticised by rights groups and set the government up for potential festivities with Internet companies who are under public pressure to ensure privacy.

But in the wake of the deadly jihadist attacks in Gay Paree in January, and coming a day after the Tunisian museum shootings that killed 21 people including two Frenchies, the government said the measures were vital for effective policing.

"There cannot be a lawless zone in the digital space," said Prime Minister Manuel Valls.

"Because we often cannot predict the threat, the services must have the power to react quickly."

The new law allows authorities to spy on the digital and mobile communications of anyone linked to a "terrorist" enquiry without prior authorisation from a judge, and forces Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and phone companies to give up data upon request.

Intelligence services will have the right to place cameras and recording devices in private dwellings and install "keylogger" devices that record every key stroke on a targeted computer.

The authorities will be able to keep recordings for a month, and metadata for five years.

Valls sought to allay fears that the law was a French version of the "Patriot Act", which the United States used to authorise blanket spying powers after the attacks there on September 11, 2001.

Procedures will be "precisely defined", any request for data will have to be "justified" and decisions to begin surveillance will be taken personally by the prime minister and will be for a limited time.

"It in no way allows a generalised surveillance of citizens," said Valls.

La Belle France is one of the last Western countries to pass comprehensive legislation governing modern surveillance -- having till now relied on a law passed in the pre-Internet days of 1991.

Louis Caprioli, former counter-terrorism head at French intelligence agency DST, said he thought the measures were "proportionate" and that the judiciary had always worked closely with the intelligence services to ensure rights are protected.

But he said surveillance alone would not be enough to meet the threat.

"We need sufficient human resources and currently they are clearly insufficient," said Caprioli.

"We've added some technicians -- that's a good thing -- but we also need many more Sherlocks on the ground."

However,
there's more than one way to stuff a chicken...
the bill has attracted criticism from lawyers, civil rights activists and industry experts.

#1  this is the same dirty deal with the devil being rammed through the parliaments of the five-eyes nations.

it does nothing to hurt fascist islamists who just get off their mobiles or do not email.

you don't need to tell anybody about your jihad, just like Man Monis didn't when he murdered people at the Lindt cafe in sydney.

one man alone can do it. all he needs is his ideology

yes folks ideology

we are in an ideological battle with fascist Islamism and secular muslims who die fighting it (like that jordanian pilot burned to death in a cage) know the answer

ban Sharia

ban it loud and proud

embrace freedom of speech especially freedom to blaspheme and ridicule

those who react violently can then be weeded out and the remainder have learned tolerance

A Civil Hospital medical superintendent has been instructed to do a medical checkup of him before presenting a report on his condition.

MQM rejects Saulat Mirza's claim, calling it a 'mockery of law'
[DAWN] In an emergency presser held Thursday night, the Muttahida Qaumi Movement
...English: United National Movement, generally known as MQM, is the 3rd largest political party and the largest secular political party in Pakistain with particular strength in Sindh. From 1992 to 1999, the MQM was the target of the Pak Army's Operation Cleanup leaving thousands of urdu speaking civilians dead...
(MQM) dismissed the allegations levelled by death-row inmate Saulat Mirza.

The party representative Senator Farogh Naseem said the decision to air Mirza's video statement has set a bad precedent and turned in illegal.

"We are setting a bad precedent of criminal jurisprudence in the country," said Senator Naseem, while calling the eleventh hour confession by the infamous killer a mockery of law. "Mirza should have given these statements 25 years back."

Flanked by Barrister Saif, Naseem said that even if the government does not like the MQM, it should operate under the law.

The MQM leader said "this is a serious offense against the country's legal procedure. All this doesn't hold any legal value". He went on to say that according to law, once a crime has been accepted before the court, it cannot be taken back.

The Sherlocks reported that the pattern of attacks against the Yazidis, a religious minority living mostly in northern Iraq, pointed to the intention of IS "to destroy the Yazidi as a group".

Although the report states cautiously that the holy warriors "may have committed" genocide, one of the most serious international crimes, Hanny Megally, a senior UN rights official, told news hounds in Geneva that "all the information points in that direction".

Obama to 'reassess' Israel relationship
[EDITION.CNN] President Barack Obama
I bowled a 129. It’s like — it was like Special Olympics, or something...
told Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu the United States would "reassess" aspects of its relationship with Israel after Netanyahu's provocative statements leading up to Tuesday's Israeli election.

The phone call Thursday was officially described as a message of congratulations on Netanyahu's victory, but it also carried a serious warning after the prime minister opposed the creation of a Paleostinian state in the last days of his campaign.

"The President told the Prime Minister that we will need to re-assess our options following the Prime Minister's new positions and comments regarding the two state solution," according to a White House official.

According to an official statement put out after the call, the president also emphasized the United States' "long-standing commitment to a two-state solution" during their conversation.

Earlier Thursday, Netanyahu walked back his disavowal of a two-state solution, a position he endorsed in an effort to appeal to right-wing voters with polls showing him facing tough competition.

U.S. officials had already said that they have been waiting to see if Netanyahu would stand behind the campaign comments nixing a Paleostinian state as he moves toward forming a governing coalition.

It took two days for Netanyahu's about face.

"I don't want a one-state solution. I want a sustainable, peaceful two-state solution," Netanyahu said Thursday in an interview with MSNBC's Andrea Mitchell. "I haven't changed my policy."

#2  Of course there's no deal. Iran takes all the chips and leaves the table. A deal would imply we would get some back.

#3  The only "deal" is between Obamanation and Jarrett.

The only discussion is "how fast can we get Iran the bomb but keep our hands clean?"

U.S. Special Ops targets social media
[Wash Times] U.S. special operations forces, elite commandos engaged in high-risk operations around the world, are adding a new focus to their portfolio of activities: social media and other unconventional information warfare threats.

"Social media is another component of unconventional strategies, and the security environment in general, that is playing a central role in recruiting individuals to causes," Army Gen. Joseph L. Votel, commander of U.S. Special Operations Command, said Wednesday in prepared testimony to the House Armed Services Committee.

"We must therefore develop our ability to interact with key influencers through this medium, or else risk blinding ourselves to this important conduit of information and influence in unfolding crises," Gen. Votel said.
