Hamdok renews call for direct talks with al-Burhan to end Sudan's war
[SUDANTRIBUNE] Former Sudanese Prime Minister Abdallah Hamdok, head of the Civil Forces Coordination (Taqqadum), has once again urged the Commander-in-Chief of the Sudanese Armed Forces, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, to meet with the Coordination to discuss a ceasefire and peace efforts.

In late December, Hamdok sent two letters to both al-Burhan and the commander of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), Mohamed Hamdan Daglo “Hemetti,” proposing a meeting with the coordination’s leaders to address the ongoing conflict in Sudan.

While Hemetti responded favourably and met with coordination representatives in Addis Ababa on January 2, the army has yet to respond to Hamdok’s call.

The meeting between the RSF and the coordination resulted in the “Addis Ababa Declaration,” which outlines a commitment to a ceasefire if the army agrees to the measures. Hemetti also pledged to release 451 prisoners of war and open humanitarian corridors for aid delivery.

In contrast, Deputy Chairman of the Sovereign Council Malik Aqar has refused to meet with the coordination, denying receiving any request for a meeting. He has also criticized the Addis Ababa Declaration, characterizing it as an agreement between partners.

Responding to these statements, Hamdok stated on the X platform, “Today, I called on the Commander-in-Chief of the Sudanese Armed Forces to accept the request for a direct meeting with the Coordination of Civilian Democratic Forces (Taqqadum).”

Hamdok emphasized the opportunity to cease hostilities, as expressed in the Addis Ababa Declaration, where the RSF has expressed its readiness for a ceasefire through direct negotiations with the army.

“We must not waste this opportunity for peace and do our best to stop the war and build sustainable peace in our beloved country,” Hamdok stressed.

He reiterated the coordination’s commitment to a peaceful solution, stating, “We extend our clean hands to reach a peaceful, negotiated solution, and we hope that the warring parties will respond to this so that we can relieve the suffering of our people and build our homeland on a new foundation that makes the April 15 war the last of Sudan’s wars, to be followed by a sustainable peace.”

Troika countries condemn attacks in Abyei Administrative Area
[SUDANTRIBUNE] The embassies of Norway, the United Kingdom, and the United States have condemned the latest attack in Abyei Administrative Area.

The incident, in which the Deputy Administrator of Abyei Noon Deng Nyok and several of his colleagues were killed, occurred on Sunday, December 31, 2023.

“The use of violence as a tool for political or economic competition perpetuates a dangerous cycle and must be universally rejected by all South Sudanese leaders,” reads the Troika’s statement, adding “This attack and all other incidents of violence should be investigated, and perpetrators held accountable”.

In a separate incident, five people were killed in fresh fighting in Athony Ayuok and Ayuoks villages in Twic, Warrap State and Abyei Special Administrative Area.

The disputed oil-producing region is claimed by both Sudan and South Sudan.

WSJ: US wants to deploy reconnaissance drones in three African countries
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.
[Regnum] The United States wants to deploy its reconnaissance drones in African countries with access to the Atlantic Ocean to prevent the spread of Islamist groups in the region. The Wall Street Journal writes about this on January 3.

Washington has begun “exploratory talks” aimed at deploying American unarmed surveillance drones at airfields in Ghana, Ivory Coast and Benin, American and African officials told the publication.

It is assumed that with the help of drones, the United States will be able to track the movements of militants from the terrorist groups “Islamic State” (an organization whose activities are prohibited in the Russian Federation) and Al-Qaeda (an organization whose activities are prohibited in the Russian Federation). The Americans will transmit this information to the local military.

As reported by IA Regnum, earlier German political scientist Alexander Rahr, commenting on the events surrounding the rebellion in Niger, said that the United States wants to use Africa in its own interests. According to him, for the Americans, Africa is another tool for ensuring world domination.

Arabia
British Foreign Secretary threatens Houthis with consequences for attacks on ships
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.
[Regnum] New attacks by Yemen
...an area of the Arabian Peninsula sometimes mistaken for a country. It is populated by more antagonistic tribes and factions than you can keep track of...
i Iran's Houthi sock puppets
...a Zaidi Shia insurgent group operating in Yemen. They have also been referred to as the Believing Youth. Hussein Badreddin al-Houthi is said to be the spiritual leader of the group and most of the military leaders are his relatives. The legitimate Yemeni government has accused the them of having ties to the Iranian government. Honest they did. The group has managed to gain control over all of Saada Governorate and parts of Amran, Al Jawf and Hajjah Governorates. Its slogan is God is Great, Death to America™, Death to Israel, a curse on the Jews They like shooting off... ummm... missiles that they would have us believe they make at home in their basements. On the plus side, they did murder Ali Abdullah Saleh, which was the only way the country was ever going to be rid of him...
rebels on ships in the Red Sea will have consequences for them, British Foreign Secretary David Cameron
...Empty suit Brit pol, former PM, has stated that he is certainly a big Thatcher fan, but I don't know whether that makes me a Thatcherite, which means he's not. Since he is not deeply ideological he lacks core principles and is easily led. He has been described as certainly not a Pitt, Elder or Younger, but he does wear a nice suit so maybe he's Beau Brummel...
said on January 4, as quoted by Rooters.

"The world economy, the economy of every country, will suffer if ships continue to be attacked, which is completely illegal and unacceptable. These attacks must stop, otherwise measures will be taken," he said, in particular.

However,
alcohol has never solved anybody's problems. But then, neither has milk...
he did not answer the journalists’ clarifying question about what specific measures might be discussed.

As Regnum reported, on December 30, in the Red Sea from areas controlled by the Houthis, missiles were fired at a container ship of the Danish company Maersk, which was sailing under the flag of Singapore. The carrier has suspended ship movements in the area indefinitely.

In early January, several merchant ships in the southern Red Sea reported ballistic missiles being fired towards them from Yemen. The Houthis also attacked the French carrier CMA CGM's Tage.

A representative of the movement assured that gunnies will continue to attack ships heading to Israel, adding that attempts at counteraction by the United States will not be left unanswered.
But actually, as has been noted before, the Houthis will aim in the general direction of anything they think they can hit that is not connected to Iran, Russia, or China. Lack of an Israeli connection is immaterial.
Russia's permanent representative to the UN Vasily Nebenzya said that the alarming events in the Red Sea are a projection of the violence in Gazoo
...Hellhole adjunct to Israel and Egypt's Sinai Peninsula, inhabited by Gazooks. The place was acquired in the wake of the 1967 War and then presented to Paleostinian control in 2006 by Ariel Sharon, who had entered his dotage. It is currently ruled with an iron fist by Hamas with about the living conditions you'd expect. It periodically attacks the Hated Zionist Entity whenever Iran needs a ruckus created or the hard boyz get bored, getting thumped by the IDF in return. The ruling turbans then wave the bloody shirt and holler loudly about oppression and disproportionate response...

Disqualifying anyone for life against Islam: CJP Faez Isa
[GEO.TV] Chief Justice of Pakistain (CJP) Qazi Faez Isa Thursday remarked that disqualifying anyone for life from parliament is "against Islam", as the Supreme Court conducted the hearing of a case pertaining to lifetime disqualification of politicians under Article 62(1)(F) of the Constitution.

The apex court had taken notice of contradictions regarding the duration of disqualification in the Election Act, 2017, and an apex court verdict during a past hearing on a petition filed by former PML-N provincial politician Sardar Meer Badshah Khan Qaisrani last month.

Qaisrani had challenged his lifetime disqualification over a fake degree in 2007.

"This is a constitutional issue, which we are going to settle once and for all, and we will try to conclude it quickly in order to prevent confusion for the returning officers (ROs) while receiving nomination papers for the upcoming elections," CJP Isa had remarked during the previous hearing of the case.

Today, a seven-member bench — headed by CJP Isa and comprising Justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah, Justice Yahya Afridi, Justice Aminuddin Khan, Justice Jamal Khan Mandokhel, Justice Muhammad Ali Mazhar, and Justice Musarrat Hilali — presided over the hearing.

Security Council urges de-escalation in Red Sea
[AFRICANEWS] The UN Security Council held an emergency meeting on Wednesday to discuss heightened tensions in the Red Sea following a series of attacks by Yemen's Houthi rebels.

UN Assistant Secretary-General Khaled Khiari warned that a military escalation would have adverse political and humanitarian consequences.

“The United Nations continues to warn against the adverse political, security, economic and humanitarian repercussions of military escalation in the Red Sea and the risk of exacerbating regional tensions," the Assistant Secretary-General said.

"As to the overall situation in the region, we encourage all concerned parties to avoid further escalation and de-escalate tensions and threats," Khiari added. "This is critical so that traffic through the Red Sea can return to its normal state and the risk of Yemen being dragged into a regional conflagration be avoided.”

The militants have said they are targeting vessels either linked to or heading to Israel in an act of solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza.

However, there have also been attacks on vessels that have no connection to Israel.

As a result, many major shipping companies have suspended operations in the Red Sea and have re-directed their cargo ships along the longer route around the tip of South Africa.

Arsenio Dominguez, the Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization, addressed the Council via a video link on the need to protect the freedom of maritime navigation, and the potential impact of the Houthi attacks on international trade.

“A significant numbers of companies, around 18 shipping companies have already decided to re-route their vessels around South Africa in order to reduce the attacks on vessels and the impact this has on seafarers in particular," Dominguez said. "This represents an additional 10 days to the journey and of course a negative impact on trade, and an increase in freight rates.”

There are concerns that the disruption could see higher shipping costs and oil prices in the short-term.

Blinken to push Israel during visit to allow Palestinians to return to northern Gaza
[IsraelTimes] Clearly Secretary of State Blinken hates the Palestinians. Why else would he push to send them back into an active war zone full of unexploded ordinance and boobytraps of all sorts, and without schools, electricity, or running water — or, in many cases, any buildings with four walls and a roof entire?

187 aid trucks entered Gaza Thursday through Israel and Egypt — COGAT
[IsraelTimes] 187 trucks carrying food, water, medical supplies and shelter equipment were inspected and transferred to the Gazoo

Strip today via Egypt’s Rafah and Israel’s Kerem Shalom Crossings, Israel’s COGAT military liaison to the Paleostinians says.

Eighty-eight trucks were inspected at Israel’s Nitzana Crossing and entered Gaza via the Rafah Crossing.

Ninety-seven trucks were inspected and transferred into Gaza via the Kerem Shalom Crossing.

Israel committed during a truce in November to start allowing in 200 trucks of aid every day.

It says it has been inspecting hundreds of trucks each day but that the UN and Egypt have failed to keep up with those numbers, leading to insufficient amounts of aid actually getting into Gaza.

The UN says distribution of large amounts of aid is all but impossible as long as Israel’s military campaign continues.

Israeli gov’t aims for nearly all southern evacuees to return by September, source says

border seen going home by March 1, says resettlement source; communities ravaged the most on Oct. 7, including Nir Oz and Kfar Aza, may take up to 2 years to resettle.

The government is already encouraging evacuees to return to towns in the 4- to 7-kilometer range. On Sunday, they became eligible for a grant of about NIS 6,000 ($1,600) per adult per month, and half of that for children, if they reside in their hometown until February 1 rather than avail themselves of state-funded accommodation elsewhere.

In addition to the evacuees from the south, the state is providing accommodation for about 50,000 evacuees from the north. The Hezbollah terror group has been targeting towns near the border with Leb

Formerly inhabited by hardy Phoenecian traders, its official language is now Arabic, with the usual unpleasant side effects. The Leb civil war, between 1975 and 1990, lasted a little over 145 years and produced 120,000 fatalities. The average length of a ceasefire was measured in seconds. The Lebs maintain a precarious sectarian balance among Shiites, Sunnis, and about a dozen flavors of Christians, plus Armenians, Georgians, and who knows what else? It is the home of the original Hezbollah, which periodically starts a war with the Zionist Entity, gets Beirut pounded to rubble, and then declares victory and has a parade. since the war with Gaza broke out.

Northern communities that have been evacuated and provided with government-afforded temporary housing are not being encouraged to return home and are not eligible for a resettlement grant at this point. They are expected to remain displaced until at least the end of February, the source said.
