Africa Subsaharan
UK to increase population in Africa
500 million pounds that could have been spent on clearing toxic waste in Britain is instead being spent on increasing the population in Africa.
More survivors of Malaria mean more hungry mouths to feed, greater pressure on food resources and future famine. All those babies that survive will then go on to have seven and eight babies of their own.

A better idea would be to spend that money on making birth control freely available but what with the Pope's recent visit and everything, i guess that's off the table...

UK to halve malaria deaths

Britain will lead the fight against malaria, one of the world's biggest killers of children, the deputy prime minister, Nick Clegg, will tell the UN summit in New York tomorrow. He will pledge to halve deaths from the disease in 10 African countries.

Clegg will announce an increase in UK funds for malaria from £150m a year to £500m by 2014 in his closing speech to world leaders discussing progress towards the millennium development goals.

The UK government is pushing for greater efforts in two areas: the health of women and babies, which will be the subject of a strategy launched by the UN secretary general, Ban Ki-moon, tomorrow, and malaria, which takes a big toll on both.

"In Africa, a child dies from this disease -- this easily preventable disease -- every 45 seconds," Clegg will tell the summit. "So we will make more money available, and ensure that we get more for our money, with the aim of halving malaria deaths in 10 of the worst affected countries."

One of the countries that will benefit from greater UK efforts to fight the disease is Zambia, where the government estimates 5,500 children a year would be saved by increasing access to malaria prevention, diagnostics and treatment. Another is Ghana, where the UK will supply 2.4m new bed nets, estimated to be enough to save 13,000 lives a year.
I've been to Zambia. No point saving new hungry mouths to feed if you don't fix the total endemic societal corruption. Just asking for a famine in t-minus 10 years and counting

#1  It’s become a Washington cliché that the military and the intelligence community rely too much on outside contractors.

Just as our oil is linked to the mideast, outsourcing overseas is a problem. If these contractors are linked to China, that is both a national security problem as well the economy. We will rapidly become someone else's b1tch if we don't change things around ASAP. The DANGER meter is getting close to pegging!

Nationalist leader. For us not just them.

Unfortunately, I know of no serious contender for president that I would call a nationalist.
Someone has to put us first.

India-Pakistan
World cannot pay for Pakistan flood disaster: Holbrooke
[Dawn] The outside world cannot foot the entire bill for Pakistan's recovery from devastating floods and the Pakistani government must do more, US special envoy Richard Holbrooke said Monday.

The day after world donors raised aid pledges to almost two billion dollars, Holbrooke said the eventual cost of the monsoon disaster could run into the "tens of billions of dollars."

"The international community will not be able to pick up the full cost of reconstruction," Holbrooke said.

"There will be a need for continued international assistance, but what we need to stress is that at a time of scarcity in other countries, a reconstruction effort cannot be financed completely by other countries."

The US envoy called on the Pakistani government to redouble its efforts to help the 21 million people the UN estimates have been affected by the disaster, including 12 million needing emergency food aid.

"They have to take the lead. Pakistanis know they have to do more and how much they do remains to be seen, and what the needs are remain to be seen," Holbrooke said.

USAID chief Rajiv Shah warned Monday that the risk of diseases such as cholera is increasing as people return to their homes.
"The first and most critical priority is to prevent the spread of water-borne illnesses," Shah said.

"In a flood of this magnitude, even as the flood waters recede, the likelihood of water-borne illness and cholera... actually increase as people go back to their homes but do not have effective and safe sanitation environments, and water doesn't completely recede."

New Pakistan aid comes with accountability calls
[Al Arabiya] World powers made fresh aid pledges for Pakistan's flood disaster early Monday, after a $2 billion U.N. appeal, but pressed the stricken nation to fully account for the money.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon called for an "urgent" global response to "one of the biggest, most complex natural disasters we have faced in the history of the United Nations."

While the official death toll remains at just over 1,700 people, U.N. agencies say about 21 million people have been affected and 12 million need emergency food aid.

Torrential rain began falling in northern Pakistan in late July and the floods have since been moving slowly south, wiping out villages and farmland.

Britain doubled its flood aid to $210 million; the United States said it is now offering $340 million and the European Union $350 million.

Saudi Arabia said it has also donated $345 million in government and public funds. Even Iran allotted $100 million dollars for its neighbor.

But it was not immediately clear whether the $2 billion target was reached at the meeting of over 25 top ministers, including U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. Aid groups expressed disappointment at the response.

Post-flood Pakistani politics get heat after two parties merged
(Xinhua) -- Watching new political movements, high profile meetings and especially the merger of two main political parties amid hot critical versions by leaders, experts have started to discuss any possible big change in the current political scenario of Pakistan.

A notable political movement was seen on Saturday when the leaders of two pro-establishment political parties Pakistan Muslim League-Q (PML-Q), former ruling party and an ally of Ex-President Pervez Musharraf, and Pakistan Muslim League-F (PML-F) announced their parties' merger.

Former Prime Minister Shujaat Hussain, president of PML-Q, described the merger of two PML factions as a step forward to bring political stability, strengthen democracy, overcome the country's uncertain situation, and to save the federation.

Hussain, on the occasion, criticized the government recalling his suggestions to the government for relief and rehabilitation operations in flood. "Instead of giving priority to the welfare of the people the government remained busy in party politics and personal egos," he said.

This merger of PML-Q with its 53 seats and PML-F with 5 seats would give birth to the third largest party in the lower house with 58 members in the house of 339, after Pakistan People's Party (PPP) and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), with 126 and 90 seats respectively.

Qamaruz Zaman Kaira, information minister of the government, welcomed the criticism and appreciated the merger describing it as a positive step to strengthen the democracy in the country.

Another faction of PML, Pakistan Awami Muslim League, would also possibly join the merger. Leaders of the merged parties agreed to name their reunion with All Pakistan Muslim League which has already been announced by Musharraf for his party, reportedly, going to be launched on Oct. 1 in London.

A section of political experts believe that the unification was a precautionary move to prohibit the maximum members of the PML-Q to join Musharraf's party.

Ajmal Khan Wazir, vice president of PML-Q, had reportedly been terminated from his post after having a couple of meetings with Musharraf in spite of warnings from high-ups of the party.

"I knew this news through media, but general secretary of the party denied any such action. If anything happens I will not care much and will support Musharraf," Wazir told Xinhua on Monday.

Although PML-Q leadership, with its merger move, tried to pressurize the government and also save its party unity but almost one dozen main prominent office bearers of the party had already shown their favor to Musharraf's newborn party.

Amir Muqam, president of PML-Q in the northwestern province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, had funded seven million rupees (0.82 million U.S. dollars) to a foundation established by Musharraf a few days back to show his support.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Rioting breaks out at Lebanon prison
[Gulf News] Rioting broke out at a prison in the northern Lebanese city of Tripoli on Monday with inmates taking warders hostage to demand better conditions and reduced sentences, a security official said.

"Some 30 inmates at Qobbeh prison managed to seize six warders and are demanding that conditions inside the prison be improved and that their sentences be reduced," the official told AFP, speaking on condition of anonymity.

He said riot police had entered the prison and negotiations were underway to end the mutiny.

The main road leading to the overcrowded prison inside the city limits was sealed off and two ambulances were seen entering the facility, according to an AFP reporter at the scene.

Rioting broke out at the same prison in January 2009 with inmates also seizing jailers to demand better conditions.

Qobbeh is the largest prison in northern Leb and houses 600 inmates.

As someone who has stood by helplessly and watched numerous candidate immigrants and their attorney's 'play by the rules' and spend thousands of hard earned dollars only to face virtual interrogations by hostile US Overseas Mission visa and immigration officials..........I refuse the read this drivel! Care to examine what really matters to our US State Department and Administration? Have a look at a small sampling below:

Exploring Diversity and Tolerance on U.S. CampusesSeptember 10, 2010

70 first year students at Free State University, an institution that earned notoriety last year for race relation problems, visited the Consulate September 10 to obtain visas to conduct 2-week stays at several U.S. colleges to learn about campus diversity and tolerance issues in an American context.

Consul General Andy Passen and officers from the Consulate met with them after their successful visa interviews to talk about the university’s determination to become an institution that welcomes and promotes multiculturalism. The ensuing discussion looked at historical and contemporary efforts, both in South Africa and the U.S., to expand our societies’ understanding of diversity and the need for more inclusiveness.
