-Lurid Crime Tales-
Caribbean crime wave linked to US deportations
As with most things, it's all our fault.
[Pak Daily Times] The crime was horrifying enough -- a nightclub owner, hacked to death with a machete, was found buried in pieces. But what really outraged people was that the accused killer had been deported from the US to his native Grenada as a convicted felon.

As a foreign-bred criminal, the suspect never should have returned to the close-knit tropical nation, relatives of the victim and others said. Islanders called for more vigilance over deportees by the government, which says it needs help from Washington to handle the return of hardened convicts.

#4  GREAT idea deporting foreign crims after a year. Wish Australia did that too but our namby pamby nanny state just wants to keep them at a cost of $800 per week at Her Majesty's Leisure.

Don't fold, America. Just deport. It's not your problem any more. Actually, if you started deporting the families too you'd have collective responsibility and you'd be amazed how the crime rate of foreigners would drop to below zero. Their own families would do them in first!

Britain
Ed Miliband crowned new leader of Labour Party
[Pak Daily Times] Former climate change minister Ed Miliband was elected the new leader of Britain's opposition Labour Party on Saturday, beating his older brother David in a knife-edge race.

After a five-month contest, Ed Miliband won by 50.65 percent to 49.35 percent for David, the former foreign minister, who led until the final days.

The left-leaning 40-year-old faces a battle to reshape the centre-left party of former prime ministers Tony Blair and Gordon Brown, which suffered a heavy defeat in the general election in May after 13 years in power. Ed Miliband enjoyed a last-minute surge after a campaign which reached out to Labour's traditional left-wing supporters.

As soon as the result was announced to Labour party delegates gathered in a conference hall in Manchester, northwest England, David Miliband jumped to his feet and embraced his brother as huge cheers rang out. Ed Miliband told party members that a new generation had taken over and was hungry for the fight against Prime Minister David Cameron's Conservative-Liberal Democrat coalition government.

"Today's election turns the page because a new generation has stepped forward to serve our party and in time I hope to serve our country. Today the work of the new generation begins," Miliband said.

He added: "I am proud of the leadership of both Tony Blair and Gordon Brown but we lost the election, and we lost it badly. "And my message to the country is this--I know we lost trust, I know we lost touch, I know we need to change." The leadership contest was triggered in May when Brown resigned following the election defeat.

David Miliband was until very recently the frontrunner to win the ballot of Labour lawmakers, party members and trade unionists.

But after a surprise boost in support, his sibling Ed, formerly part of Brown's inner circle, suddenly surged to the front. The younger Miliband also beat competition from former education secretary Ed Balls, ex-health secretary Andy Burnham and leftwing outsider Diane Abbott. ED Miliband only became a member of parliament in 2005 and held the post of secretary of state for energy and climate change in the last government, becoming a vocal supporter of moves to curb global warming.

#1  Labour's opponents feared a David Miliband-led Labour party more than an Ed-led one, but Ed's something of an unknown quantity to most. He is a bit of a strange, detached-seeming character. It will be very interesting to see how he performs at Prime Minister's Questions, on TV etc, as opposition leader.

Also, how he deals with the opinion many will hold now: that he owes his position to union members' votes - union members who were corralled by the union chiefs. In the months and years ahead, as gov't cuts back on spending and there is the inevitable public sector 'industrial' action, those people will expect Ed to be at the head of the resistance, supporting strikes etc. If he does, he risks getting Labour re-branded as far-left and irresponsible; if he doesn't things could turn very nasty for him within his own party. His brother, or another Labour heavyweight, could end up positioning themselves as the voice of the moderate opposition, and risk tearing Labour in half. Of course, all that assumes the Con/Dem coalition remains in power.

Caribbean-Latin America
Aftermath of the Mono Jojoy raid: computers and a Number Three
BOGOTA -- Colombian authorities say the data found on 15 computers, 94 USB devices and 14 hard disks at the camp of slain FARC military chief "Mono Jojoy" is many times more valuable and revelatory than that discovered after a 2008 cross-border airstrike into Ecuador that killed another top rebel commander.
Whee! Lots of fun for the forensic programming johnnies! I wonder how many of the contacts they find will be with local representatives of Hizb'allah or the Iranian Revolutionary Guard? And how many with the eight whose homes in Minneapolis and Chicago were searched on Friday by the FBI anti-terrorism division...
That assessment appeared in an article published Saturday by Bogota daily El Tiempo, which added that the Dijin investigative police force's forensic informatics division was charged with evaluating the computer data.
Guys, I'm sure the FBI or Mossad will be happy to lend you some of their spare people, should you want some extra pairs of hands.
The analysis has concluded thus far that the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC, guerrilla group restricts its use of mobile phones and other electronic devices to the minimum for fear its communications will be intercepted. Instead, they rely on couriers to carry USB memory sticks from one camp to another.
Next they'll want to restrict footgear, although going barefoot has its own peculiar risks when trotting down jungle trails.
The investigators note, for example, that no cellular or satellite phones were found at the camp in south-central Colombia where Victor Julio Suarez Rojas, better known by the aliases Jorge Briceño or "Mono Jojoy," was killed in an airstrike Wednesday along with a score of other guerrillas.

Among other things, the investigation has shown that the computers found at the camp were 2009 and 2010 models, one of which apparently was used exclusively by the FARC military leader. That computer's screen was damaged but the hard disk drive was practically intact and authorities were able to gain access to the data.

Authorities expect to find, in addition to e-mails, videos and recent plans for kidnappings and attacks on towns and security forces.

In March 2008, following a cross-border attack that killed Luis Edgar Devia, better known as Raul Reyes, in Ecuador, authorities recovered a computer and some USB devices of the FARC's No. 2 and international spokesman. But authorities believe the data from Mono Jojoy's camp is more important because the military chief handled more of the rebels' internal information, and that this blow to the FARC therefore leaves the group even more vulnerable than it was after Reyes' death.

The FARC, which has fought a decades-old struggle against a succession of Colombian governments but has seen its numbers fall by more than half in recent years to roughly 8,000 fighters, had suffered a series of setbacks prior to the strike against Mono Jojoy.
And that Number Three:
BOGOTA -- Colombian army troops killed the leader of the 45th Front of the FARC in a gun battle in Arauca province, which borders on Venezuela, officials said Saturday.

The commander of the 18th Army Brigade, Gen. Rafael Alberto Neira Wiesner, told reporters that the death of alias "Hugo Hernandez" will come as a relief for inhabitants of the Tame area, who have been at the mercy of this individual who constantly collected extortion money from them."

The guerrilla of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC, was surprised, together with other rebels, as he was collecting an extortion payment. When he saw he had been discovered, a battle broke out that ended with the death of the guerrilla who coordinated extortions for the FARC's 38th, 45th and 56th Fronts.
Not nearly as creative as the Rab encounter reports, but one can imagine how it must have been.
Hugo Hernandez, 35, had been with the FARC for 17 years, and was accused of attacking several towns in the province of Cundinamarca, where the nation's capital Bogota is located, as well as carrying out assaults on Tame and Saravena, two of the main cities in Arauca province.
Wanted on twelve systems, even his mother didn't love him... and can you blame her, a badman miscreant like that?

#1  Killing Mono Jojoy was a real accomplishment. The evidence on these hard drives will just be denied and Ecuador and Chavez will say it's all lies. The NY Times will print articles heavily in favor of the leftist governments and cast doubt over the computer forensics. The data won't change anything.

China Conducts Long Range Force Projection Air Exercise
The Chinese Air Force has tested its strategic air power capability for air strikes and bombing against long-distance targets in the counter-terrorism exercise under the Shanghai Co-operation Organisation (SCO) being held at Matybulak in Kazakhstan between September 9 and 25, 2010. About 5,000 troops from China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia and Tajikistan are taking part in the exercise.

The Chinese Air Force is trying to build an integrated air battle group encompassing early warning, command, long-distance bombing, escort and air refueling."

In addition, "The Tibet Airlines is planning to launch routes to Europe within five years and expand its fleet to 50 by 2020. Liu Yanping, general manager of the State-owned airline, told China Daily that the carrier plans to build Lhasa Gonggar Airport, where it is based, "into an aviation center that not only links various parts of the autonomous region but also Tibet and other areas". He said that the carrier plans to make Lhasa, capital of the Tibet autonomous region, western China's "air hub".

#3  This is mainly aimed at Taiwan : hit them with waves of missiles from the Chinese coast, and send in fighter/bomber waves like 1 minute behind the last missile wave. That way, the fighter/bombers can kill any of the runway repair crews, and hopefully won't take terrible losses from the Taiwanese air defenses.

Given that runway repair isn't rocket science, and certainly not all that different from laying asphalt anywhere else, and Uncle Sam wasn't able to keep Iraqi runways out of commission, I suspect Chinese efforts will be in vain.

#7  Taiwan poses no threat to the PRC. It is not in the PRC's interest to damage Taiwan. Taiwan is increasingly investing in facilities and generating employment on the mainland - China can simply continue to encourage this pattern, and gradually become so intertwined with Taiwan that it makes no difference - plus the Taiwanese can't vote or hold office on the mainland - unless and until they join with China. How long will Taiwan continue to pour US$ Billions into the PRC, without wanting to have some political representation?

China is making massive investments in Africa and South America - concentrated in mining, energy, and agriculture. I'm guessing that China will eventually start putting sizable populations of Chinese workers overseas, to oversee, manage, and develop their foreign investments. That, along with their need to safeguard their sea lines of communication, will drive them to set up naval-centric military bases overseas. These will require air cover, and also ground defense.

Basically, by 2060, China's military is going to be deployed globally in a way that looks a lot like the deployments of the US military in 1960. The US better start get used to that idea. The torch was passed from Europe to the US between 1860 and 1960 - and now that torch is going to be passed to China. The European colonial powers must have found that last passing of the torch traumatic - but it is now ancient history. The same trauma is going to befall the US over the next two generations - all because of liberal political rot, and wanton financial mismanagement by the US ruling class since 1960.

China needs water, it needs food (which depends on water) and it needs women. It has the wealth, and the political will to go get what it needs.

We shall live in interesting times, 'til the end of our days.

I'm sure Africa will enjoy the rule of the enlightened Chinese far more that the rule of those nasty old European colonialists, LR. In fact, I can hardly wait for the Chinese to "invest" in Somalia.

Africa and China deserve each other.

#9  "China ... needs women"

Anybody with a basic knowledge of 5th-grade math could have figured out 50 years ago that was coming, between their devaluing girl babies and their one-child policy.

I'm interested in where they intend to get the women, since they believe non-Chinese are inferior. If they use foreign women to make babies, in a generation or two a lot of Chinese won't really be Chinese. Then what happens to the superiority complex?
Posted by: Barbara Skolaut || 09/26/2010 22:53 Comments || Top||

Interesting analysis, except you are forgetting one of the reason the "torch" was passed is two devastating world wars which basically wrecked European demographics. The closest the US has ever come to the demographic calamity of two world wars was the US Civil War.

And you are forgetting China has a demographic problem of its own in which large swaths of its population in its western areas has never even seen a lightbulb or electricity. What happens when those folks began to demand the same services, and China can't deliver?

Japan rejects China's demand for apology
[Pak Daily Times] Japan on Saturday turned down China's call for compensation and an apology for the detention of a Chinese fishing boat captain whose arrest sparked a bitter row between the countries.

"The case was handled as obstruction of executive officers by a Chinese fishing boat in a strict and orderly manner based on our country's domestic law," foreign ministry spokesman Satoru Sato said in a statement.

"Therefore, China's demand for compensation or an apology is totally groundless," the spokesman said. "It cannot be accepted at all."

Beijing called for compensation and an apology for the "unlawful" detention as the Chinese trawler-man arrived home early Saturday after being released by Japanese prosecutors.

China's foreign ministry said the disputed islands at the centre of the diplomatic standoff were Beijing's "inherent territory", according to a report by the state-run Xinhua news agency. "(The arrest) seriously infringed upon China's territorial sovereignty and violated the human rights of Chinese citizens," the ministry said in a statement.

"Japan's detention, investigation or any form of judiciary measures for the Chinese trawler and fishermen are unlawful and invalid," the report said, adding: "The Japanese side must make apology and compensation for the incident." The Chinese skipper was arrested on September 8 after his boat collided with two Japanese coastguard vessels near a disputed island chain, called Senkaku by Japan and Diaoyu by China.

Navy fliers grounded after dipping Blackhawks into Lake Tahoe
Rewritten for safety purposes
Two unidentified US Navy helicopter pilots from North Island Naval Air Station, California have been grounded because of a stunt that was filmed on Lake Tahoe.

Phone camera footage taken Sept. 14 show both naval MH-60 helicopters hitting the water, while one appears to plunge into the lake before recovering.

The San Diego Union-Tribune reported that a US Navy spokesman confirmed video was that of two US Navy helicopters. The amount of damage done to the birds was unconfirmed.

#1  Hand-wringing whiny ... Gads! I used to work with an old TB pilot (WWII) who would tell me how they would drag their tailhooks in the ocean just for fun. And for the waddling TB's that was something. (This after me telling him about helicopter ground effect pranks vs. hills in RVN). Military pilots, including helicopter pilots, all have jobs requiring guts, and have varying degrees of need to demonstrate their elan and skill, usually to one another. Sounds like another Navy brass cf coming down the road. I can only hope for a dressing down being the end of it.

#4  trouble was, they weren't supposed to be anywhere near Lake Tahoe. They were at Mather Air Base (for an air show) near Sacramento, and flying to Lemoore. That path doesn't go near Tahoe. Also:

The damage suffered by the two aircraft is estimated at between $50,000 and $500,000. They had to land at Lake Tahoe Airport to be repaired.

I'm all for flyboy fun, but they f*cked up.

In short they were out fu%king around and screwed up. These guys are lucky they did not end up swimming. Let alone what the state of CA would do for polluting their only somewhat clear lake.

It is safe to say these four pilots are done as far as any career goes.
