Sen. Lisa Muzlalofosdhyshdjeorieoroy (NMP-Alaska) wins a write-in vote
Sen. Lisa Muzlalofosdhyshdjeorieoroy (Not My Party NMP-Alaska) became the first senator in more than 50 years to win a write-in victory.

The Associated Press called the race on Wednesday, almost two whole weeks after voters headed to the polls.

Murkowski, a two-term incumbent, defeated Republican nominee Joe Miller and Democrat Scott McAdams.

She was forced to pursue a write-in campaign after conservatives, including her political rival, former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin (R), had backed Miller in his successful primary challenge to Murkowski. Republican leaders had lined up behind Miller and stripped Murkowski of her leadership position in the Senate.

The election is a blow to Palin's political influence in her home state, where she's fueded with the Murkowski family in the past. Palin won the governorship after besting Murkowski's father, Gov. Frank Murkowski, in a 2006 Republican primary.

The Alaska senator appears to have made peace with many Senate GOP leaders, who believed their colleague might have a good chance of returning to Congress. She's shown somewhat of a cold shoulder, though, toward Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.), who'd backed Miller.

"He has suggested that he's got some making up to do," Murkowski told CNN last week. "I'll let him make that first move."

Murkowski is traveling back to Alaska, where she's scheduled a press conference for later today.

She was ahead by more than 10,000 votes over Tea Party favorite Miller and the number of contested write in ballots were not enough for Miller to make up the gap.

So far, however, there has been no word of an official concession from Miller.
Miller had been demanding a hand recount of the more than 250,000 votes cast in the race.

The Miller campaign has continually raised concerns over the ballot counting process, questioning the impartiality of the state division of elections and of Lt. Gov. Craig Campbell, who plays a leading role in overseeing the process.
Muzlalofosdhyshdjeorieoroy represents the worst of prostitute politics in the trunk party. She is owned by the unions and is owned by the Native corporations in Alaska who are controlled by K Street lobbyists. Those Native corporations get sweetheart, noncompetitive deals from the federal government and the state of Alaska, and generally provide overpriced and poorly managed contracts. That's why she is the Earmark Queen. Whatever you thought about Miller and the gaffes he committed, I am ashamed for me and my fellow Alaskans for the selection of a cap and trade, union-owned, special interest earmark prostitute. We get the government we deserve.

Moonbat fratricide: Leftists sue HuffPo for stealing their ideas
Mediaite

What would the world be like if The Huffasuffaluffagus Huffington Post was actually The Stassinopoulos Report? Well, we might’ve had to have taken StassRepo buses to D.C. And also, Arianna Huffington wouldn’t have been sued by Democratic consultants James Boyce and Peter Daou, who are accusing her of stealing the idea for a website from their designs, a site that would one day become The Huffington Post.
Wait! Democratic consultants have ideas? Really?
Woah, talk about burying the lead!

William and Kate are to marry
(KUNA) -- Prince William, the second in line to the throne, is to marry Kate Middleton next year, the royal Palace of Clarence House announced Tuesday.

"The Prince of Wales, (the Heir to the British Throne), is delighted to announce the engagement of Prince William to Miss Catherine Middleton," a statement said. "The wedding will take place in the Spring or Summer of 2011, in London. Further details about the wedding day will be announced in due course." said the statement.

"Prince William and Miss Middleton became engaged last October during a private holiday in Kenya. Prince William has informed The Queen and other close members of his family. Prince William has also sought the permission of Miss Middleton's father.

"Following the marriage, the couple will live in north Wales, where Prince William will continue to serve with the Royal Air Force," the statement added.

The two have been close friends for some time and the news of their wedding is not a big surprise to observers here.

US urges Egypt to allow foreign election observers
[Al Arabiya] The United States on Monday said Egypt should allow peaceful political gatherings, open media coverage and international observers in the run up to its Nov. 28 parliamentary election.

Egypt's rights record has been criticized by allies and international human rights
... which are not the same thing as individual rights, mind you...
groups that say the authorities use force against political opponents and voters to keep geriatric President Hosni Mubarak's ruling National Democratic Party in power.

Ahead of the Nov. 28 vote, the authorities have taken steps critics believe are designed to curb media freedom and limit the chances of the opposition Mohammedan Brotherhood, which remains officially banned but has fielded candidates as independents.
Egypt, the first Arab nation to make peace with Israel, is seldom a target of U.S. criticism. It receives significant U.S. aid and is a key ally in President Barack B.O. Obama's effort to broker a peace deal between Israel and the Paleostinians.

The Egyptian government has said it would allow Egyptian civil society groups to monitor the parliamentary vote but has refused to allow foreign observers.

"We welcome the government of Egypt's stated commitment to expanding political participation and ensuring free and transparent elections, including facilitating domestic monitoring by civil society groups," State Department front man P.J. Crowley said in a written statement.

"Fair and transparent elections would include peaceful political assemblies throughout the campaign, civil society organizations freely promoting voter education and participation, and an open media environment that offers balanced coverage for all candidates," he said.

Caribbean-Latin America
Venezuela criticizes US counter-terrorism policies
[El Universal] The Venezuelan government strongly criticized "some governments that like to draw up lists of countries that allegedly cooperate with terrorism, while harboring within their own territory dangerous international terrorists."

Valero also reminded the UN Security Council's resolutions 1,373 (2001) and 1,624 (2005) that demand member States not to provide shelter to faceless myrmidons and not to claim political motivations to refuse requests for the extradition of alleged terrorists, "but in the case of international terrorist Luis Posada Carriles, and other tried and convicted criminals in Venezuela for actions of this type, do not have any effect," said a statement issued by the Venezuelan Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Ambassador Jorge Valero, the Permanent Representative of Venezuela to the United Nations, aka the Oyster Bay Chowder and Marching Society, recalled once again on Monday, in the context of the discussion on the Reports of the presidents of the Subsidiary Bodies of the Security Council, that "Luis Posada Carriles, the person responsible for the terrorist attack that killed 73 innocent civilians 34 years ago, for blowing up a Cubana de Aviación airplane off the coasts of Barbados, is free and active in the United States."

The Venezuelan envoy reiterated the US government its request to extradite Luis Posada Carriles, or, at least, "try him for the terrorist acts he has admitted being involved with."

Europe
Eurozone crisis 'threatens EU'
[Al Jazeera] The European Union will not survive if it fails to overcome a debt crisis plaguing the euro single currency area, the bloc's president Herman Van Rompuy has said.

Hours from a meeting of finance ministers in Brussels on Tuesday, Van Rompuy said that the EU and eurozone were in danger from alarm in the financial markets.

The meeting was called to grapple with an exploding debt crisis that has already brought Greece to its knees, and now threatens Ireland and Portugal.

"We all have to work together in order to survive with the eurozone, because if we don't survive with the eurozone we will not survive with the European Union," Van Rompuy said in a speech in Brussels.

He said he was "very confident" the EU would overcome the crisis, thanks to "courageous measures" taken by states "to reduce expenses at a time of populism, despite massive protests on the street and knowing they risk electoral defeat."

Van Rompuy's stark warning raises the stakes after an admission by Ireland that it was holding talks about a possible rescue, six months after international partners had to rush to aid Greece with a $150bn bailout.

Portugal has also warned that it is at "high" risk of needing financial support, unable to borrow money on open markets other than at prohibitive rates, partly because tension over Ireland is increasing pressure on other weak eurozone members.

George Papandreou, the Greek prime minister, also facing new problems over conditions attached to the rescue for Greece, has said he has support from Nicolas Sarkozy, the French president, to re-schedule bailout repayments.

The three countries are only the weakest links in a chain of debt coursing through the 16 nations that share the euro currency, with almost every other member of the European Union bursting at fiscal seams.

Ireland "is under pressure from some other EU politicians and even the ECB to consider requesting funds to provide further reinforcement for its banking system and so reduce contagion risks," Julian Callow of London-based Barclays Capital Research said.

He said that from the European Central Bank's perspective, a $60bn European Financial Stability Fund "can be used to support banks, provided that the funding is requested by governments and channelled via them."

Despite an EU official telling the AFP news agency exactly the opposite on Monday, stressing that the loan guarantees are not available for banks, Callow warned that "Ireland has the biggest skew in terms of requesting ECB financing," signalling $176bn of demands on the Irish central bank in October.

Barroso voices disappointment over failure of budget talks
(KUNA) -- European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso expressed here Tuesday "extreme disappointment" over failing talks between the EU Council and the European Parliament on the 2011 budget.

"I regret that a small number of EU member states were not prepared to negotiate in a European spirit. Indeed, given the advanced state of the negotiations and the progress made, a solution should have been possible last night," he noted in a statement.

The last attempt to approve the EU budget for 2011 ended in failure early on Tuesday, as the EU Council, which represents European Union governments and the European Parliament (EP), remained locked in a power struggle.

Talks broke down, despite the EP having agreed to Council demands to limit budget increases to 2.9 percent, rather than the 6.2 percent the EP had asked for.

In return, the EP asked for a "legally-binding" promise to be involved in future discussions on long-term EU financing, giving them a platform to call for an EU-wide tax.

The European Commission, the EU's executive arm, will now submit another budget proposal, hoping an agreement can be reached on it at next month's EU summit, scheduled for December 16-17.

"Those that think they have won a victory over 'Brussels' have shot themselves in the foot. They should know that they have dealt a blow to people all over Europe and in the developing world. This is not a budget for 'Brussels'. It is the beneficiaries of EU programs (citizens, businesses, towns, cities, regions and rural communities) who will feel the impact of this failure to reach agreement," said Barroso.

Meanwhile,
...back at the ranch...
EU budget Commissioner Janusz Lewandowski told news hounds today "we start preparations on a new draft budget. It will take time. Probably 2011, we will start." He added that the delay in the budget approval is affecting many important programs of the EU, such as financing the new External Action Service and also compensation payments made to European farmers.

Nancy Pelosi: The Gift That Keeps on Giving!
Duplicate but we like the value-added in-line commentary ...
Despite the party's drubbing in the midterm elections, Speaker Nancy Pelosi will remain the Democratic leader in the next Congress.
Thank you, Lord for your most bountiful blessings...
Members of the caucus voted overwhelmingly Wednesday to make Pelosi minority leader, brushing aside a challenge by Rep. Heath Shuler (N.C.), a Blue Dog Democrat who says Pelosi's controversial public image and low approval ratings are a liability to Democrats looking ahead to 2012.
Move along. Nothing to see here.
The tally was 150-43.

During Wednesday's proceedings, Pelosi was nominated by Rep. Mike Doyle (D-Pa.), while Rep. Jim Matheson (D-Utah), another Blue Dog leader, officially made Shuler a contender.
Stella! Stella!!
During his nominating speech, Doyle trumpeted Pelosi's fundraising prowess, noting she used most of the money to support other members even as conservative groups were spending millions of dollars attacking her.

"She wouldn't spend it for herself because she was spending it for us," Doyle said, according to an aide in the room. "How can we fold on her when she's not folding on us?"
Because she's an albatross around your necks?
Earlier in the day, House Democrats rejected a proposal to delay caucus leadership elections until December. Behind Reps. Peter DeFazio (D-Ore.) and Marcy Kaptur (D-Ohio), some Democrats lobbied to push the vote to Dec. 8, arguing that members needed more time to digest the reasons behind their trouncing in the midterm elections.
No Madam Speaker. I am not saying you are in an Egyptian River...
"Considering these disturbing exit polls, we believe we should not rush to elect a leadership slate next week, but rather spend more time to understand these historic losses," DeFazio and Kaptur wrote to colleagues last week. "Before we chart a new path forward, we need to understand where we erred to avoid repeating past mistakes."
It's not the policies....
The vote to delay the election -- among the first items under debate Wednesday as the full caucus huddled in the Cannon office building -- was defeated 129-68, according to Rep. Brad Sherman (D-Calif.).

That led to the first leadership election of the day, in which Rep. John Larson (D-Conn.) won reelection as House Democratic caucus chairman in a vote by acclamation.

Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-Md.) predicted well before the vote that Pelosi would win the minority leader spot by a "substantial" margin.

"It'll be Pelosi," Cummings said. "I expect you'll have a headline that says Pelosi elected Speaker -- I mean, leader."
A Freudian slip.
Pelosi supporters were wondering why the two-term Shuler -- who voted against many of the Democrats' top legislative priorities, including healthcare reform -- was qualified for the position.
Shuler speakers were wondering why Pelosi -- who oversaw the virtual overthrow of the republican form of government and one of the biggest mid-term disasters in the last 100 years -- was qualified for the position.
"The accomplishments of the last two years have been achieved without Heath's vote," Rep. James Moran (D-Va.) told reporters. "And now he wants to be leader?"

Pelosi's contest against Shuler marked the second of five contests. It is to be followed by votes on Rep. Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) -- who's running uncontested for minority whip -- Rep. James Clyburn (D-S.C.) -- for whom Pelosi carved out a new "assistant leader" post last week -- and Rep. Xavier Becerra (D-Calif.), who's vying to keep his spot beneath Larson as vice chairman of the House Democratic Caucus.

If there are no surprises, it means the Democrats will keep the same five leaders in the next Congress -- in the same order of seniority.

Some senior Democrats say that all the hype -- not to mention controversy -- over the leadership races is irrelevant outside the Washington Beltway, where voters care more about policy than intra-party popularity contests.

"Who the minority leader is or isn't -- or who the whip is or isn't -- is very much a Washington-insider issue," Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.), chairman of the House Finance Committee, said. "The general public cares about public policy, not personality."
Yes, Barney. And that is exactly why you were nearly sent home...and you lost your chairmanship.
Asked if Pelosi's abysmal approval ratings among independents pose a problem for the party looking ahead to 2012, Frank said they don't "because she's not running for president."

"You people are focused on this, the voters aren't," he said, referring to the media. "The general public is much more focused on substance."

Frank asserted that Pelosi had "virtually nothing" to do with the poor election outcome for Democrats.
No Madam Speaker. I am not saying you are in an Egyptian River...
"Going forward," he said, "we will be judged on what the public policies are."
Maverick: This is what I call a target rich environment.

Obama's Prospects for Russia Arms Pact Fade
WASHINGTON -- An agreement between the United States and Russia to slash their nuclear arsenals was in danger of collapse after an influential Republican senator said Tuesday it should not be voted on this year.

With a terse statement, Sen. Jon Kyl dealt a major setback to President Barack Obama's efforts to improve ties with Russia and to his broader strategy for reducing nuclear arms worldwide. The treaty, known as New START, had been seen as one of Obama's top foreign policy accomplishments.
Posted by: DarthVader || 11/17/2010 11:28 || Comments || Link || [3 views] Top|| File under:

#1  I don't get the need for speed here.

Sure, when the President signs a treaty, it should go to the Senate without inordinate delay. But the President should have a pretty good idea in advance what the Senate will and will not approve.

It appears that Bambi the Infallible once again miscalculated, and didn't get Senator Kyl on board in advance of the final negotiations.

One can play hardball on the domestic front if one wants to, but national security ought to be strictly bipartisan. The START treaty negotiations should have been briefed to both Dems and Pubs all along in the Senate so that there wouldn't be such snags after the treaty has been signed.

How hard would it have been to brief Kyl and hear his concerns?

Now the treaty is going to sit in the lame-duck session without progress (good), and then it will come up in the new session in 2011. It ought to be reviewed then without political rancor, but good luck on that one.

The US and Russia could have agreed, at the expiration of the previous START treaty, to keep that one in force, with mutual inspections, until the new treaty was approved. Apparently Bambi couldn't persuade the Russians of that.

Makes you wonder what's in this treaty that we won't like when we finally get to read about it (you know, after it's approved).
Posted by: Steve White || 11/17/2010 11:37 Comments || Top||

#2  "national security ought to be strictly bipartisan"

"Ought to" and "Bambi's in charge" are two different things, Steve.

Bambi's idea of "bipartisan" is "you have to do things MY way."
Posted by: Barbara Skolaut || 11/17/2010 14:21 Comments || Top||

#3  It was a bad treaty, not to mention completely unnecessary. The president did this to fulfill his youthful dream of creating a nuclear-free America, against advice from both sides of the aisle... and I don't think there was ever really a point when the Senate would have ratified the thing, any more than they were willing to ratify the Kyoto one.
Posted by: trailing wife || 11/17/2010 15:18 Comments || Top||

#4  This is typical behavior of the Big O. He goes for the big splash and does not do his homework. He will never realize that he is not the king, and that he needs to work with the Senate beforehand when he is playing around with this treaty stuff.

The reality is now if you get rid of your nuclear weapons unilaterally, you will be subject to nuclear blackmail. The Leftist ideology will not work with reality. He is playing games with our security and our lives, and those of our allies.

Sarah Palin definitely considering 2012 run for the White House
SARAH Palin is definitely considering running for the White House in 2012.

Ms Palin confirmed her intentions to run for office in a New York Times Magazine article.

"I'm engaged in the internal deliberations candidly, and having that discussion with my family, because my family is the most important consideration here," the 2008 Republican vice presidential candidate said.

Ms Palin also said she does not see any major policy differences among the current group of Republicans considering a 2012 bid.

The article describes Ms Palin's hands-on method of organising her political activities and communications among a tight circle of trusted aides that she has surrounded herself with in the wake of her 2008 election experience.
Any interaction with the press by any member of the circle must be approved by Ms Palin herself, as do any personal appearances.

She also told the Times that the media's unfair treatment of her makes her "fear for our democracy."

The former Alaska governor's skill at communicating outside the mainstream media also gets some attention.

White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs told the Times: "If I would have told you that I could open up a Facebook account or a Twitter account, simply post quotes, and have the White House asked about those, and to have the entire White House press corps focused on your quote of the day on Facebook - that's Sarah Palin."

"I just tweet; that's just the way I roll," Ms Palin says.

Should she decide to run, Ms Palin will face the challenge of convincing the American public - and members of her own party - that she is qualified for the job.

Her unfavourable rating hit a new high at 52 percent according to a Gallup poll released last week.

Longtime political rival Lisa Murkowski, the Republican Senator from Alaska who will likely reclaim her seat after a controversial write-in campaign, told CBS News this week she thought Ms Palin lacked the "leadership qualities" and "intellectual curiosity" to be president.

And in a late October interview with UK newspaper The Daily Telegraph, Republican strategist Karl Rove suggested Ms Palin does not have the "gravitas" to be president.

While he earlier told CBS's Face the Nation that Palin would be a "formidable" presidential candidate, he told the Telegraph that Palin's appearance in a new reality television series on TLC may not fit "in the American calculus of 'that helps me see you in the Oval Office.'"

The recent premiere of that reality show, Sarah Palin's Alaska, drew 4.96 million viewers, a record for any TLC debut.

"I know that a hurdle I would have to cross, that some other potential candidates wouldn't have to cross right out of the chute, is proving my record," Ms Palin told the Times.

"That's the most frustrating thing for me - the warped and perverted description of my record and what I've accomplished over the last two decades.

#1  In one of the rare occasions I actually agree with the donks, Palin is not qualified to be POTUS. She is much more useful as a fund raiser and grassroots organizer as well as a target replacement for Cheney in the "Darth Vader" role.

#2  Sarah Palin may yet become qualified for president -- she certainly has the potential, and she is in my opinion more qualified than the current resident of the White House. However, given that the current resident is most definitely not qualified, it seems to me wise not to make such an expensive mistake twice.

On the other hand, having Sarah Palin in the primary would certainly shape the debate for both parties in ways very beneficial to the future of the country. And she'd make an outstanding vice president, again, much better than the current job-holder.

#3  I talk to many people each day in the general public. The media attacks have had no effect on those loyal to her. She will be attacked within her own party and out. I see a huge ground swell of support for her that is building day by day among the general working people. Should she move forward I believe she will overcome her detractors. With each insult the Tea party grows stronger and a that applies to Palin as well. They know she will deliver. They know she will do that which will benefit the whole country. Bye Bye teleprompter and hello bust of Churchill.

#6  With all respect to Any, the people who are predetermining Palin's unsuitability are the same journolistas that glorified Obama's unblemished credentials. How's that working out?

Today's idiot: a severe case of Palin Derangement Syndrome
Ed Treleven, Wisconsin State Journal

Allegedly set off by Bristol Palin's appearance on "Dancing with the Stars," a rural Black Earth man kept police at bay outside his home for 15 hours Monday and Tuesday before he surrendered to police. Steven N. Cowan, 66, railed at the television as the daughter of former Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin appeared on the ABC program, his wife told police Monday after she fled from the town of Vermont house, according to a criminal complaint filed in Dane County Circuit Court.

Cowan had also been under stress because of a financial situation and was receiving care for a mental health problem....
Wow! Didn't see that one coming.
Cowan's wife, Janice, told police that her husband had been drinking,
No kidding? There's a shocker.
but she did not think he was intoxicated....
Let's think about this for a moment. Which of the following would be worse?
(A) Your husband gets drunk out of his mind and then goes all Dog Day Afternoon over Dancing With the Stars.
(B) Your husband goes all Dog Day Afternoon over Dancing With the Stars while he's stone cold sober.

But wait! There is another alternative! (C) Your husband goes all Dog Day Afternoon over Dancing With the Stars while he's pleasantly inebriated.
Don't forget (D) Your husband goes all Dog Day Afternoon and then goes Saw IV as a double-feature ...
According to the complaint, Cowan and his wife were watching "Dancing with the Stars" when Cowan jumped up and swore as Bristol Palin appeared, saying something about "the (expletive) politics." Cowan was upset that a political figure's daughter was on the show when he didn't think she was a good dancer, the complaint states....
Instapundit snarks:
Too much time reading the Daily Dish, I guess. At least, I heard he was screaming "It's not Sarah's baby! It's not Sarah's baby!". . .

But reader John Spaulding writes: "We've driven them nuts. Literally." For some, no driving was necessary. They were close enough to walk already.

It's pretty standard now to medicate for anxiety and depression for stressful situations, the idea being to provide a cushion to keep one's response to the situation from getting out of control. Of course, if it's not the right medication for the individual, it can make things worse...

Alaska military base says F-22 fighter overdue
ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- A spokeswoman for Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson says an F-22 fighter jet based at the military facility near Anchorage is overdue.

Spokeswoman Corinna Jones said Tuesday night that the jet, with one pilot aboard, was on a training mission out of the base and lost contact with air traffic control at 7:40 p.m. Alaska time. She says a search is under way. Jones declined to identify the pilot, but says the aircraft is assigned to Elmendorf's 3rd Wing.
Hate to have to say this, but there are a lot of tall mountains near Elmendorf. With no radio communications from the pilot indicating a problem, it's likely he flew into one. Sad.

UPDATE:A search is under way northeast of Cantwell for an overdue Air Force F-22 Raptor fighter jet from Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson that went missing Tuesday night.

Searchers are focusing northeast of Cantwell, which was the last known location for the aircraft, according to the statement. The search is being coordinated by the Alaska Air National Guard Rescue Coordination Center, and involves HH-60 helicopters and an HC-130 plane.

#1  ...The lack of contact does not bode well - it may have already gone into 'recovery operation' mode by now.

O Spirit, whom the Father sent
To spread abroad the firmament.
Oh wind of heaven, by Thy might
Save all who dare the eagle's flight.
And keep them by thy watchful care
From every peril in the air

#2  That area just northeast of Cantwell contains Windy Pass, where small planes go over the Alaska Range between Anchorage and Fairbanks at 3000 ft elevation. Mountains are very rugged and are about 7000 to 8000 ft high. If the F-22 ran into trouble and the pilot ejected, he would still be in trouble, as he could be coming down on a steep slope or a cliff.

#3  According to Anchorage television station KTVA, the wreckage has been spotted, but the pilot has not been located yet by rescue teams. This report was filed a little after 1 PM today.
