Firebombings of Muslim targets in Queens under investigation

#1  What goes around

#2  The first target was a bodega. Isn't that a small shop selling things Mexican for those far from home, or has that now become a general small shop selling things for a specific ethnicity /religion to those far from home?
Posted by: trailing wife || 01/02/2012 8:08 Comments || Top||

#3  Yeah, I noticed that too, so I made sure to change the reference to four firebombings in the original headline. Either they aren't telling the full story, or the folks over at the NYT think they need to pad the number.

#4  What goes around

Not necessarily.

The first target was a bodega...has that now become a general small shop selling things for a specific ethnicity /religion to those far from home?

Yes. It's the 'urban' word.

Either they aren't telling the full story, or the folks over at the NYT think they need to pad the number

I'll go with the former, plus the rush to get the story out. Note this bit of detail in the article:

"The Islamic center, the Imam Al-Khoei Foundation, houses one of the most prominent Shiite mosques in New York. It lists branches in several cities, including Montreal and Islamabad, Pakistan."

The key words to me are "Shiite" and "Pakistan". That, and the store fire being started from the inside.

It'd be interesting if the NYT ever gets around to reporting on who owns the store and the houses.
Posted by: Pappy || 01/02/2012 9:09 Comments || Top||

#5  New vocabulary -- thanks, Pappy! :-).

Good point about Shiite and Pakistan. Let's all keep an eye out for a follow-up story.
Posted by: trailing wife || 01/02/2012 13:05 Comments || Top||

#6  Good analysis, Pappy. I hope the NYT does intend to go further with the story. If they could play it as an Islamophobia story, they would undoubtedly pursue it. On the other hand, a Muslim vs. Muslim story might not be the narrative they are trying to create. Perhaps an e-mail to the Post is in order. ;-D

RIP Swordmaster Bob Anderson
Bob Anderson was not just Vader during the duels in the Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, but was also responsible for the swordplay in "The Princess Bride", the "Lord of the Rings" films, "Highlander", "Zorro" and a slew of others.

He started in 1953 training Errol Flynn in The Master of Ballantrae, and also did movie stunts.

As a competitive fencer, he represented Great Britain at the Olympic Games in 1952 and the World Championships in 1950 and 1953 in the sabre event. He finished tied for fifth in the team sabre event at Helsinki in 1952.

The swordplay choreography he provided for movies served as an inspiration to generations of both actors and swordsmen.

At Least 50 Killed in Communal Clashes in Nigeria
[An Nahar] At least 50 people were killed in festivities between two neighboring communities in Nigeria's southeastern Ebonyi state, a government front man said Sunday.

"Upwards of 50 people were killed when a group of people from Ezza community attacked residents of neighboring Ezilo community over a land dispute," the Onyekachi Eni told AFP by telephone.

He said the festivities were not linked to the wave of bloody attacks by the Boko Haram
... not to be confused with Procol Harum, Harum Scarum, possibly to be confused with Helter Skelter. Currently wearing a false nose and moustache and answering to Jama'atu Ahlus-Sunnah Lidda'Awati Wal Jihad, or Big Louie...

to declare a state of emergency in some areas late Saturday.

"The dispute between the two communities, which started in 2008, was believed to have been settled until the latest conflagration. A group of people from Ezza invaded Ezilo and attacked them, killing over 50 people there," he said.

Ebonyi state police front man, John Elu, estimated the corpse count at around 40.

"We estimate that between 38 and 40 people, including a police brass hat going to work, were killed in the festivities, although we don't have an accurate figure for those killed because some of them were hacked to death in the bushes," he said, adding "the corpse count could be higher."

He said the gunnies who are yet to be identified also destroyed houses and other property.

No arrests have been made yet, he added.

He also confirmed that a land dispute had existed between the two communities for several years.

State-run Radio Nigeria said the attackers set fire to many houses, shops, offices, petrol tankers and a mill.

The Ebonyi state governor, Martin Elechi, and the state police boss visited the scene Saturday to see the extent of the tragedy, the governor's front man, Eni, said.

Dozens of riot coppers have been deployed to the two communities to restore law and order, he added.

Violent and deadly communal or ethnic festivities over land are frequent in Nigeria between neighboring communities on the one hand and between farmers and herdsmen on the other.

Land ownership is a sensitive issue because of commercial or traditional values attached to it. Most Nigerians in rural areas derive their means of livelihood from subsistence farming.

8 Dead, 44 Hurt in Attempted DR Congo Jail Break
[An Nahar] Eight people died and 44 were maimed on Sunday during an attempted jail break in the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo's Sud-Kivu province, police said.

The casualties occurred at the Bukavu central prison after a grenade went kaboom! in the hands of an inmate, senior regional police official Gaston Luzembo told Agence La Belle France Presse.

"A colonel inmate gave a grenade to a civilian inmate and told him to throw it in front of doors to create panic to facilitate the escape," Gaston Luzembo, a senior regional police official, told AFP.

"Not being a military man, the civilian took the pin out of the grenade but kept it and it went kaboom! in his hands," Luzembo said.

"There were eight dead -- four civilians and four military," he said. "There were also 44 injured, including 32 civilians, with the rest military."

He said three prisoners managed to escape on Saturday with the "complicity" of the head of the jail. They included the man who was the official representative of the prisoners.

Luzembo said the colonel then tried "to take advantage of this unstable situation" to launch the failed jail break.

Prison breaks and attempted escapes are frequent in DR Congo.

In September, nearly 1,000 inmates beat feet from a prison in the eastern Katanga province after a spectacular raid by masked gunnies to spring a militia leader from death row.

Prisons in the vast former Belgian colony are notoriously overcrowded and unsanitary with disease and malnutrition rife.

British MPs: "We won't eat halal meat"
Restaurants serving the British Parliament have rejected demands to serve halal meat. Muslim MPs and peers have been told they cannot have meat slaughtered in the Islamic tradition because the method -- slitting an animal's throat without first stunning it -- is nauseating offensive to many of their non-Muslim colleagues.

The stance has enraged some parliamentarians who have eaten meat in the Palace of Westminster's 23 restaurants and cafes, having been assured that it was halal. Lord Ahmed of Rotherham said, "I did feel misled. I think a halal option should be made available."

In 2010, the Mail on Sunday revealed schools, hospitals and restaurants are serving halal meat to unwitting customers. Many grocers and fast-food chains including Domino's Pizza, Pizza Hut, KFC and Subway are also using halal meat without telling customers.

Members of the Church of England have said that the spread of halal meat was 'effectively spreading Sharia law' across Britain. However, a spokesman for the House of Lords and the House of Commons confirmed that it was not served in their restaurants.

#1  I hate to say this, but kosher slaughter is similar. Are we going to see attempts to ban that?
Posted by: Eric Jablow || 01/02/2012 7:44 Comments || Top||

#2  Eh? There have been attempts for years to ban kosher slaughter, Eric, and even to ban the importation of kosher meat where the slaughter is already banned, Wikipedia has a nice round-up, though no doubt as incomplete as Wikipedia gets on controversial matters -- the writers completely missed New Zealand's ban, f'r instance.

#5  I wouldn't mind eating halal meat or kosher meat, but I'll boycott either one if anybody attempts to force it onto the menu in my home. Just as I wouldn't demand the right to eat a cheeseburger in Jerusalem or bacon in Riyadh, it just seems like a simple matter of respect. And I really like bacon.

#6  The enemy slices the throat of an animal and lets it bleed to death. Savages.

The slaughtering method of both Muslims and Jews, Gerthudion Stalin4019. Both commit male circumcision, too. It's possible you haven't thought through your blanket condemnation.

#7  Let's face it, killing animals to eat them is something that we do because we are still basically predatory and carnivorous. If you have a problem with that, go vegan.

#8  Don't some producers simply play a recording of an imam reciting prayers in the slaughterhouse and then label their product 'halal'?

#9  your blanket condemnation.

People are getting fussy over blankets now? Where will it end?

Hey, where does vat-grown meat fit into this picture? Is it halal if it never really was an animal?

#10  "it just seems like a simple matter of respect"

There's your problem right there, Tom.

For them, respect is a one-way street - you give it, they don't.

#11  "The enemy slices the throat of an animal and lets it bleed to death. Savages."

Interesting way to look at it, GS4019. When I was young, I helped my grandmother chop the head off the Sunday-dinner chicken (I sat on the bucket she flung it up under until it died). Guess that makes us both savages.

Is shooting, stabbing, or just gutting better? What's your preferred method of killing animals for meat?

#12  I know about the anti-shechita legislation in France and Switzerland, Barbara. I was just wondering if the anti-Semitic undercurrent in England was coming into play.

Shall we wave a dead chicken over this discussion?

#13  Only in modern times have many people been able to live their lives without ever having to deal with the less pleasant aspects of butchery. But inevitably, if you eat meat, someone somewhere is dealing with animals in a way that you'd probably rather not witness. And you're lucky that they are.

#14  "Shall we wave a dead chicken over this discussion?"

As long as I can sit on the bucket until the chicken dies, Eric.

I've got experience... ;-p

#15  What's really fun about killing chickens by cutting their heads off is watching them run around after they've been beheaded.

#16  May those in the White House be running around in a similar manner on November 7th of this year!

#17  Only in modern times have many people been able to live their lives without ever having to deal with the less pleasant aspects of butchery.

Indeed. I would encourage anyone that hasn't had the experience of hunting/harvesting (killing, butchering & preparing same)your own meat, to take steps to correct that. Even if it is just once. The skills and experience are priceless and could save your life someday.

Also, if your State/City has an annual livestock show, go to it, walk the display/holding areas and talk with the producers. Most of them appreciate it.

I make a point to attend the Fort Worth Rodeo and Livestock Show every year. I go at least 3 or 4 days out of the three weeks it runs and talk to the small livestock producers, it is a hoot. A bunch of them tell me they look for me every year, not many civies take a lot of interest in where their food comes from. And people should.

#18  I've got no problem eating halal or kosher food from an ideological POV. My opposition to them is purely economical. I've noticed in the super markets that these foods tend to be dearer than the non-certified foods. I'm assuming the difference is due to certification, which from what I've read is a bit of a racket.
I've got no wish to contribute to that racket.
My major objection is against situations like :
In2010, the Mail on Sunday revealed schools, hospitals and restaurants are serving halal meat to unwitting customers. Many grocers and fast-food chains including Domino's Pizza, Pizza Hut, KFC and Subway are also using halal meat without telling customers.
If this is the case, it should be compulsory to inform customers that is the case and that they are being charged extra due to halal certification, which is helping to fund the Islamization of the country.

#19  "What's really fun about killing chickens by cutting their heads off is watching them run around after they've been beheaded."

That's why Nannie flung it up under a bucket after she cut its head off, Rambler - our back yard was very small and she didn't want the flapping chicken ruining her flower bed (or the vegetable garden, for that matter).

#21  I work in a chemical plant that has both food grade and pharmaceutical grade goop. It has to be Kosher. It takes more time and does increase the cost slightly but it doesn't necessarily make the products any less "toxic" than non-kosher. Most of the time it has to do with types of grease in pumps or types of gaskets even though they will never come in contact with the product.

India-Pakistan
India to achieve N-arm triad in February
NEW DELHI: India will take a big step towards achieving a credible nuclear weapon triad in February when its first indigenous nuclear submarine INS Arihant begins sea trials off Visakhapatnam.

Top defence ministry sources say the "sea-acceptance trials'' (SATS) of INS Arihant are slated to begin "towards end-February'' after the completion of its ongoing harbour-acceptance trials (HATS). "It will take at least six months of extensive SATS and missile trials before the boat is ready for commissioning into Navy,'' said a source.

With INS Arihant's induction, India for the first time will brandish the most effective third leg of the nuclear triad - the ability to fire nukes from land, air and sea. The first two legs revolve around the Agni family of ballistic missiles and fighters like Sukhoi-30MKIs and Mirage-2000s jury-rigged to deliver nuclear warheads. Only the Big-5 has nuclear triads till now, with a total of over 140 nuclear-powered submarines. America leads the pack with 71, followed by Russia with about 40, while China, the UK and France have around 10-12 each. India did get delivery of INS Chakra, the rechristened Akula-II nuclear-powered submarine 'K-152 Nerpa', from Russia on a 10-year lease last week. But while it will bolster the country's underwater firepower, it's not armed with nuclear-tipped missiles due to international treatises.

India's nuclear triad will be in place, as Navy chief Admiral Nirmal Verma has declared, once INS Arihant is out at sea on "deterrent patrols''. It has been a long journey for INS Arihant since it was "launched'' at Vizag in July, 2009, with PM Manmohan Singh himself in attendance.

Each and every sub-system was checked and re-checked, along with high-pressure steam trials of all the pipelines, before the miniature 83 MW pressurized light-water reactor, fitted in a containment vessel on board the over 6,000-tonne INS Arihant, went "critical'' last year, said sources.

"HATS followed thereafter. Now, things are on track for SATS to begin in end-February,'' said the source. Simultaneously, fabrication work on the three follow-on SSBNs (nuclear-powered submarines armed with nuclear ballistic missiles), dubbed S-2, S-3 and S-4, is in full swing under the over Rs 30,000-crore advanced technology vessel programme. The second SSBN after INS Arihant is to be named INS Aridhaman, both of which loosely mean "potent destroyer of enemies''. They are to be armed first with the 750-km K-15 and at a later stage with the under-development 3,500-km K-4 SLBMs (submarine-launched ballistic missiles). INS Arihant has four silos on its hump to carry either 12 K-15s or four K-4s.

Navy wants to have three SSBNs and six SSNs (nuclear-powered attack submarines) in the long term, as reported by TOI earlier. The force is grappling with a depleting conventional underwater arm, down to only 14 ageing diesel-electric submarines.

Nuclear-powered submarines can silently stay underwater for months at end, unlike conventional ones that have to surface every few days to get oxygen to recharge their batteries. India with a clear "no-first use'' nuclear doctrine needs survivable second-strike capability riding on SSBNs to ensure credible deterrence.
