Indian man accused of killing nine women
[Al Jizz] An Indian man has massacred four women and five maidens of tender years in a village in the central state of Chhattisgarh, police say.

Pandu Nagesia, said to have been apparently mentally disturbed after his wife left him, killed nine of his neighbours on Thursday in the village of Behratoli village, Govardhan Singh Darroh, district police chief, told the AFP news agency by telephone.

The 35-year-old killed five girls aged between two and nine, a 25-year-old and three women over 60, he said.

"A total of nine females were axed to death," Darroh said.

"The accused Nagesia first attacked a 25-year-old woman and her two-year-old child and axed them to death, subsequently killing his neighbours one after another."

"The accused seems to be mentally disturbed after his wife deserted him," he added, after Nagesia was taken into custody and the axe recovered.
Or did his wife leave him because he was already mentally disturbed and she didn't want to get axed?

Airport Security Arrests Syrian for Attempting to Smuggle Drugs to Saudi Arabia
[An Nahar] A Syrian national was tossed in the clink

at the airport on Thursday as he was attempting to smuggle drugs to Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in their national face...
Security at Rafik Hariri International Airport arrested the Syrian national as he was trying to smuggle 10,400 grams of captagon pills to Saudi Arabia.

The drugs were concealed in his luggage and he has since been transferred to the concerned authorities for investigation.

Turtle Species Not Extinct: It Never Existed
[An Nahar] A Seychelles freshwater turtle species declared extinct after decades of futile searches, in fact never existed, scientists said Thursday.

While Man has the extinction of several turtle and tortoise species on his conscience, DNA evidence has now cleared him of exterminating Pelusios seychellensis, a team from Germany and Austria wrote in the journal PloS One.

"It never existed," the researchers said.

Genetic comparisons showed the species to be one and the same as a widespread West African turtle called Pelusios castaneus, of which a handful of individuals may have been brought to the archipelago by humans long ago, and mistaken for endemic.

Even more likely -- dried museum specimens of the now discredited P seychellensis were wrongly labelled as originating in the Seychelles, said the team.

#3  They're definitely out there, Speng.

There was a thread here at the 'burg from about ten years ago where I got into it with a former commenter Zenster about the contortions various government agencies went to in order to split cutthroat trout into as many species as possible in order to create as many public sector jobs for "studies" and in order to make the population seem endangered for political purposes. You see this a lot in the environmental and game management community, desire for magic government checks trumping science and common sense.

At NMFS, for example, there are three employees and grant recipients for every groundfish license in the Atlantic region. That means that for every boat that is licensed, there are three hacks regulating. Not only is that bad science, but the math doesn't work, either.

In all these cases the dedication to the scientific method ends at the edge of their anxiety about a guaranteed government paycheck no longer being guaranteed.

And speaking of scientific method....I just read in one of the pop-sci mags that we should now consider abandoning it. Just isn't convenient for certain topics.

SINO's, indeed.

#7  I am working on my Doctorate in Health Administration, hence my posting to Libya in a few weeks.

I read a LOT of journal articles and texts on various subjects related to health care, policy, and medicine. The juvenile and silly processes and logic some of these academic clowns use is worthy of a Pakistani politician.

The worst though of the lot are the "critical theory" crowd who actively work to find discrimination, exploitation of the working class, evil masterplans by the rich under every subject. Their crap is even more sophomoric and rife with inaccuracies and just flat misrepresentation of fact. They are notorious for misquoating and twisting research done by others and they have an amazing talent for overlooking the obvious in pursuit of their Engels, Hegel, Marxist doctrine of exploitation of the working class.

Tunisia politician arrested as gay sex suspect: Lawyer

Mounir Baatour, head of the opposition Liberal party, on sodomy charges but he denied any wrongdoing, his lawyer told AFP.

Baatour, himself a lawyer, "totally denied the charges against him and it is wrong to say he was caught in the act," Koutheir Bouallegue added.

Press reports claimed that Baatour and a lover were found in a hotel room by staff who notified police.

Sodomy is illegal under Tunisian law, with convicted offenders facing jail terms of three years.

Bouallegue said that the young man accused of having sex with Baatour was not arrested, and insisted that the charge sheet was rife with procedural errors.

Baatour is little known in Tunisia and his party has no seats in parliament.

Africa Subsaharan
US offers reward for Uganda warlord Kony
[Al Jizz] The United States has offered bounties of up to $5m each for runaway Ugandan warlord Joseph Kony and some of his top aides in the Lord's Resistance Army
... The Lord's Resistance Army is a religious and military group formed in 1987. It is led by Joseph Kony, who proclaims himself the spokesperson of God and a spirit medium, and who is periodically possessed by demons, Beelzebub and Legion prominent among them. Kony advises his soldiers to draw crosses on their chests as a protection against bullets. This does't work, but nobody outside the LRA minds. The group is based on a hodge podge of apocalyptic Christianity, mysticism, and traditional Acholi religion, and claims to be establishing a theocratic state based on an odd interpretation of the Ten Commandments. The LRA is famous for systematic criminal conduct, including murder, abduction, mutilation, sexual enslavement of women and children, forcing children to participate in hostilities, and occasional cannibalism. The LRA operates mainly in northern Uganda and also in parts of Sudan, Central African Republic and DR Congo...
(LRA) rebel group.
Kony's a bad guy and all right-thinking folk hope he dies soon and painfully. But I don't see where it's in U.S. interest to pay a reward for him. I'd think Uganda and Kenya and wherever else he seems to roam at will could maybe pool their resources and come up with a few bucks.
The announcement on Wednesday came just as Uganda and Washington said they had been forced to suspend their two-year hunt for Kony in the jungles of the Central African Republic, after rebels seized power in Bangui.

The US State Department said Kony, along with aides Okot Odhiambo and Dominic Ongwen, had been cited under the department's newly expanded War Crimes Rewards Programme.

Under the programme, the State Department offers rewards for information leading to the arrest, transfer, or conviction of such runaways.

The LRA "for almost 20 years has tormented and terrorised children across Uganda, the DRC, the Central African Republic and South Sudan. It has to stop", John F. I was in Vietnam, you know Kerry
Former Senator-for-Life from Massachussetts, self-defined war hero, speaker of French, owner of a lucky hat, conqueror of Cambodia, and current Secretary of State...
, the US secretary of state, said.

He admitted Kony and his cronies would "not be easy to find".

"The LRA is broken down into small bands of rebels, scattered throughout dense jungle, hidden by dense canopy, controlling territory through tactics of fear and intimidation," he said in a column in the Huffington Post.

Ivory Coast begins exhuming mass graves
[Al Jizz] Ivorian authorities have begun exhuming dozens of mass graves dating back to the country's 2011 post-election violence.

The exercise started on Thursday as a new report accused Alassane Ouattara
...the current president-for-life of Ivory Coast. He actually beat his predecessor in an election before having to eject him from the presidential palazzo....
, Ivory Coast's president, of failing to bring his supporters to justice for crimes they allegedly committed during the conflict.

Justice Minister Gnenema Coulibaly presided over the exhumations, observing a moment of silence at the site before digging started at the first grave on the grounds of a mosque in Abidjan's Yopougon district.

The grave contained the bodies of four men aged 17 to 35, who were killed at the height of the violence in April 2011 while defending the mosque against supporters of former President Laurent Gbagbo
... Former President-for-Life of Ivory Coast from 2000 to 2011. Laurent lost to Alassane Ouattara in 2010 but his representtive tore up the results on the teevee and he refused to vacate the presidential palace. French troops assisted the Oattara forces in extricating him from his Fuhrerbunker...

More than 3,000 people died over a period of five months after Gbagbo refused to concede defeat to Ouattara in the November 2010 election.

They said the arrest was carried out in a "sting" operation off the coast of West Africa.

It was the most high-profile arrest to date in the fight against drugs trafficking in Guinea-Bissau, where ruthless South American cartels have used the mangrove-lined islands as a base for smuggling cocaine into Europe for more than a decade.

Europe
Key data missing at troubled Bank of Cyprus - inquiry
Some key data about bond purchases by Bank of Cyprus - now the focus of a controversial EU-IMF bailout - is missing, investigators have found. The gaps were found in computer records studied by a financial consultancy, Alvarez and Marsal, Cypriot media say.

Bank of Cyprus - the island's biggest bank - bought Greek bonds which turned into some 1.9bn euros (£1.6bn; $2.4bn) of losses in the Greek debt crisis. Depositors with more than 100,000 euros in the bank are now facing a big loss.

The "haircut" for such deposits in Bank of Cyprus is expected to be about 60%.
That's more of a "beheading"...
The money taken from those accounts, and from deposits above 100,000 euros at Laiki (Popular) Bank, will be used by the government to contribute billions towards the bailout.

Strict capital controls - unprecedented for the eurozone - are in force in Cyprus, limiting cash withdrawals to prevent a run on the banks.

The "haircut" - hugely unpopular in Cyprus - is a condition for the EU and IMF to grant a 10bn-euro bailout to rescue the Cypriot economy.

The Cyprus Mail website says information provided by Bank of Cyprus was incomplete and data-deleting software was found on some computers there.
Like on the computers of those who had just moved their money and the money of their families out of Cypriot banks?
There were significant gaps in computer records for the period 2007-2010. It is not yet clear whether the wiping of records was accidental or deliberate. There were signs of mass deletion of data.
Did Rosemary Woods retire to the Med? No? Must have been someone else who wiped all the hard drives then...

India-Pakistan
Pak tests candidates' knowledge of Islam
Over the past few days, Pakistanis have been treated to the spectacle of politicians struggling to recite Quranic verses and answer questions about Islamic law as part of the scrutiny of nomination papers for the next month's general election.

In footage aired on news channels, returning officers across the country were seen asking prospective candidates to recite specific Quranic verses from memory and to explain the method for offering the 'namaz'.

In one instance, a candidate from the Jamaat-e-Islami, a hardline religious party, struggled to recite a Quranic verse that is known to most Muslims. One candidate from a religious party in Sindh told the media that the returning officer had asked him if it was permitted to offer the namaz after wearing perfume.

The candidate cheekily replied that it was permissible if the perfume contained no alcohol. The persistent focus on such issues made the scrutiny process seem like a "religious studies exam", The Express Tribune said in a report.

In some cases, the questioning of candidates took a distinctly personal turn. In Lahore, candidate Tayyaba Sohail Cheema was told by provincial election commissioner Anwar Mehboob that she didn't look her age.

"You don't seem to be 35, show your face to all around so that people can see that you seem much younger," Mehboob was quoted as saying by The Express Tribune.

Shahid Sohail, the husband of another candidate, Sadia Sohail, was given a lesson on marital life by Mehboob. "When your wife will become (a parliamentarian or legislator), all the arrangements at your home will be ruined and no one will be there to attend to your children and they will be ruined," he said.

Heck I can get a room full of kids with multiple learning disabilities to recite the Queeran without too much trouble.

Yep, no need to know math, physics, chemistry, or political science, just follow those delusional ravings all the way back to the seventh century. Just remember Mohammed's folks were considered primative by the Syrians and Egyptians in the eighth century so that gives you an idea of how far back Pakistanarchy will fall if they stay on their current trajectory.

Oh and one other thing, the only thing keeping that mess afloat is the outsourced manufacturing from OECD countries. When no one in Pakistanarchy can understand math or follow basic instructions on machinery, the place will fall back to the stone age.

Chinese nuke submarine patrols worry Indian MOD
For the first time, the Indian Navy has strong indications that a fleet of Chinese nuclear submarines is making frequent forays into the Indian Ocean. 22 such Chinese operations have been recorded, one as recently as February, 2013. One submarine was spotted near the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

Headlines Today has exclusive access to a report from the Indian Navy to the Defence Ministry that says 22 unknown submarine contacts were detected by Indian and U.S sonar in the Indian Ocean. The assessment is that China is the only other navy capable of operating in the area. The assessment has been confirmed by U.S. and Indian intelligence inputs.

The extent of Chinese submarines' unchallenged forays into the Indian Ocean can be deeply troubling for the Indian Navy.

Sources tell Headlines Today that one contact with a suspected Chinese submarine took place just 90 km from Indian soil in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Six contacts took place north-west of the Straits of Malacca, 13 south of Sri Lanka and two as far as the Arabian Sea.

The first such Chinese submarine was spotted on sonar in August 2012 during a patrol of Indian and U.S. navy ships, confident that they are the only two navies operating in the southern part of the Indian Ocean.

According to the report, the People's Liberation Army's naval wing is deploying the state-of-the art nuclear submarines on a 10,000-mile deepwater run. The launch location is Sanya in the South China Sea.

Official sources say the Chinese submariners could be preparing to sneak into India's backyard, test Indian Navy's conviction in keeping them out and probably pioneer a permanent presence in the Indian Ocean region.
Reminding India that they have more than one way to cause problems...

Top health officials arrested over drugs purchase
[Dawn] The anti-corruption department on Wednesday incarcerated
Drop the gat, Rocky, or you're a dead 'un!
three persons, including director general health and the head of the Provincial Hepatitis Control Programme, for their involvement in purchase of substandard injections and vaccines worth Rs150 million.

Dr Sharif Ahmad Khan, DG health, was arrested from his office along with Dr Ghulam Subhani, chief of the Provincial Hepatitis Control Programme and superintendent Mubarak Shah, official sources said. According to them, the arrests were made after an inquiry conducted at the directives of the Beautiful Downtown Peshawar
...capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (formerly known as the North-West Frontier Province), administrative and economic hub for the Federally Administered Tribal Areas of Pakistan. Peshawar is situated near the eastern end of the Khyber Pass, convenient to the Pak-Afghan border. Peshawar has evolved into one of Pakistan's most ethnically and linguistically diverse cities, which means lots of gunfire.
High Court Chief Justice Dost Mohammad Khan a few months back found these officials guilty of purchasing low quality injections and vaccines.

Also, the PHC had, last month, directed the anti-corruption establishment to register criminal cases against all the responsible officials involved in alleged purchase of substandard HCV (hepatitis-C virus) curing injections and vaccines.

Early this month, the anti-corruption department had found that almost expired interferon injections and vaccines meant for hepatitis prevention were purchased. It also revealed that the department bought huge quantity of medicines despite the fact it hadn't any mechanism to deliver it to patients. The department also lacked any storage facility for such a huge quantity of injections and vaccines.

[Dawn] A 12-year-old swara victim on Wednesday appealed to the chief justice of Pakistain and the caretaker provincial chief minister to provide her and her brother with justice and adequate safety, saying a local jirga is pressuring her to marry a 22-year-old man against her will.

Rubina, a resident of Doog Dara in Upper Dir district, told news hounds at the Timergara Press Club along with his brother, Bakht Munir, 18, that a jirga of 25 villages in Doog Darra had pressurised her father and elder brother to marry her off to a man she did not like.

She said the jirga had set April 4 as the wedding day.

"I bravely ran away with my brother last night to avoid forced marriage," she said crying.

She said the chief justice of Pakistain, the chief justice of Beautiful Downtown Peshawar
...capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (formerly known as the North-West Frontier Province), administrative and economic hub for the Federally Administered Tribal Areas of Pakistan. Peshawar is situated near the eastern end of the Khyber Pass, convenient to the Pak-Afghan border. Peshawar has evolved into one of Pakistan's most ethnically and linguistically diverse cities, which means lots of gunfire.
High Court and the caretaker provincial chief minister should step in and ensure justice and protection to her and her brother.

Meanwhile,

Director General of Irrigation, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa

Home Front: Culture Wars
Congress coming for your video games
From Weasel Zippers.

Can't tell iffin' she is playing to the cheap seats or not.

I won't link to Puffington Host:

Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) said Wednesday that Congress may be forced to take action to limit video game violence.

Speaking to an audience of around 500 in San Francisco, Feinstein, who led the charge in the Senate on an assault weapons ban, said the video game industry should take voluntary steps to make sure it does not glorify guns in the wake of the December mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. She added that if the industry does not, Congress is prepared to take action, according to the Associated Press.

Feinstein said that video games play, "a very negative role for young people, and the industry ought to take note of that."

"If Sandy Hook doesn't do it ... then maybe we have to proceed, but that is in the future," she added.

The California Democrat is the latest to add her voice to a chorus of lawmakers, including many Republicans, who have connected violence in video games to gun violence.

#1  First they come for the 2nd amendment, then they come for the 1st amendment.

I think we all saw that one coming years ago.

#2  I think it would be better if video games like CIV and Sim City were strictly controlled to prevent unfairly representing government as competent.

#4  This could be just about the only thing that might concievably rouse the millions of slackjawed, indolent, apolitical, pot-smoking aspirational frat boys that make up the masculine wing of the millennial generation.

But I doubt it. Most of 'em are just marking time until they can figure out how to go on disability. We're doomed, doomed I tell you.

Meth and alcohol are usually real good for that, and the "social liberals/fiscal conservatives" can never be reached for comment about that.

#6  They clearly want to lose the youth vote.

Violent videogames are already self-identified as for Mature audiences.

But Pappy, they only attack private corporations, not divisions of the party.
