More than 30 believed dead at Japanese volcano
[ARABNEWS] Rescue workers have found 30 or more people unconscious and believed to be dead near the peak of an erupting volcano in central Japan, local government and police said.

Nagano prefecture posted on its website that about 30 people had heart and lung failure, the customary way for Japanese authorities to describe a body until police doctors can examine it. At least four of the victims were being brought down Sunday afternoon.

A Nagano police official described the number as more than 30. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he wasn't authorized to speak publicly.

Mount Ontake in central Japan erupted shortly before noon Saturday, spewing large white plumes of gas and ash high into the sky and blanketing the surrounding area in ash. The mountain is a popular climbing destination, and at least 250 people were initially trapped on the slopes, though most made their way down by Saturday night.

Before the unconscious victims were found, Japan's Fire and Disaster Management Agency said that 45 people had been reported missing. The exact location of the bodies and their identities were not immediately known.

Keita Ushimaru, an official in nearby Kiso town, said that Nagano crisis management officials had informed the town that at least four people with heart and lung failure were being brought down to the town, and that there were others in the same condition. The journey was expected to take about three hours.

Rescue workers were also trying to help injured people and others who had been stranded on the mountain overnight, many taking refuge in mountain lodges. Some were unable to descend on their own, or unwilling to take the risk.

Military helicopters plucked seven people off the mountainside earlier Sunday, and workers were helping others make their way down the slopes. One woman was being carried on a stretcher, and a man with a broken arm was walking down.

School Hijab Ban Angers Kenya Muslims
...and you know what happens when you anger Moslems.
[ABNA.IR] A ruling by a Kenyan court to ban hijab in a church-sponsored school has outraged Moslem parents and scholars, who deemed the ruling a setback for the freedom of worship in the Eastern African country.

"In our religion, all girls who have reached puberty have to cover all their body except the face. This is to encourage self discipline," the Council of Imams and Preachers of Kenya Tana River chairman Sheikh Abdullahi Gudo told the Star.

Gudo was commenting on an Isiolo court ruling on Tuesday, September 23, that barred Moslems students at ST Kiwanjani High School from wearing the Islamic headscarf, hijab, and long trousers.

The ban came in response to a request by the Methodist Church of Kenya (MCK), which claims to be the school's sponsor, to stop allowing Moslems students to wear hijab in the school.

"An order is issued restraining the Teachers Service Commission, Isiolo County director of education and district education officer from allowing Moslem students to wear hijabs at St Paul Kiwanjani Secondary, contrary to school rules and regulations," Justice Nzioki wa Makau was quoted by the Daily Nation last week.

Since last term, the school, which 80% of its students are Moslems, has been hit by several student protests over the hijab ban decision.

"The students, including KCSE candidates, did not even sit for their mid-year examination," a parent who requested anonymity told the Standard.

"There had been minimal lessons offered this year due to this problem."

U.S. troops arrive in West Africa to help fight Ebola outbreak
Several dozen U.S. troops have arrived at Roberts International Airport, just outside Liberia’s capital, Monrovia. They are the vanguard of the Pentagon’s planned deployment of 3,000 troops in West Africa to fight the Ebola outbreak.

On Saturday, four U.S. naval engineers began the first phase of construction of a 25-bed field hospital for health workers in Liberia who catch the Ebola virus.

Other U.S. troops were evaluating the runway at the international airport, assessing its weaknesses and how to strengthen the tarmac for an expected surge of cargo planes and aid flights in the coming weeks.

The airport is remarkably quiet these days. Most airlines have cancelled all commercial flights to Liberia because of Ebola fears. Only two airlines continue to fly into Liberia. A few cargo flights are landing, with Ebola aid supplies from United Nations agencies and other sources, but those flights are still relatively infrequent.

Britain
British KFC customer refused hand-wipes due to halal policy
A customer at a Leicester branch of KFC has said he was “shocked” when he was refused a hand-wipe as it might offend other restaurant-goers.
"Wipe your hands? Ewwww! Icky. No."
Graham Noakes, 41, said he was astonished when staff at the fast food chain's outlet in St George's retail park refused to give him a hand-wipe because it was against its Halal policy.
"Shuddup. Halal is good for you, infidel!"
Staff said this was because the wipes are soaked in an alcohol-infused liquid. Alcohol is forbidden in the Muslim Holy book, the Quran.
So's thought.
The Leicester-based Federation of Muslim Organisations has called the decision “bizarre”.
Yeah, that's kinda another word for "stupid."
Graham said: “They told me it might offend other customers. I explained that it wouldn't affect me. In fact - I told them I like alcohol, so it wouldn't bother me in the slightest.
Shoulda promised not to eat the Wet Wipe.
“When they wouldn't give me one, I was disgusted. I will never be going to KFC again.”

#13  There was a restaurant owned by a Christian Lebanese woman here. Her little falafel/Mideastern food/beer beanery did very well. She was friendly and always had a few minutes for her customers to see if their food and service were OK. She retired after many years. Some guy bought the place. The first thing he did was quit serving beer. He was distinctly unfriendly--in a word surly. Everyone got the message that he was most likely an observant Muslim. Business fell off and he went out of business in just a few months. Karma has a way of correcting things. Who knows, this KFC may even end up going out of business for a lack of business. One thing I can be sure of, I will not be going there.

China-Japan-Koreas
Taiwan President Says Taiwanese People Are Watching Hong Kong Closely
[Rooters] TAIPEI - Taiwan President Ma Ying-jeou has said the Taiwanese people are paying close attention to the events in Hong Kong and hopes Hong Kong and China can come to a mutually acceptable solution on democracy.

Ma said in an interview with Al Jazeera the situation in Hong Kong would affect the world's perception of China. He said Taiwan still maintains it does not accept the "one country, two systems" under which China rules Hong Kong.

Taiwan and China separated in 1949 following a civil war between the Communists and Nationalists, who fled to Taiwan. Taiwan has been self-ruled since then, developing into a vibrant democracy, electing its own president and legislature. China has never renounced the use of military force to take back Taiwan, which it regards as a renegade province.
Similar to the transfer of our industrial and manufacturing base to China, the ongoing unrest in Hong Kong was inevitable and yet another dividend of perfidious Albion's failed foreign policies.

#1  On the other hand, the last 180 years (more or less) of Hong Kong history are viewed by many Chinese as a failure of imperial foreign policies. Their empire, that is.
In the 1850's their Taiping Rebellion killed about 20 million people, mostly civilians, in the deadliest war in human history, up to that point. The Chinese collective memory is very long.

Police and protesters clash in Hong Kong
After a day of tense protests in Hong Kong in which at least 26 people were injured, organizers called on tens of thousands of pro-democracy demonstrators in the Chinese territory to head home late Sunday.

The Hong Kong Information Services Department said six police officers were injured, but it was unclear if they were included in the 26 figure. Police said they have arrested 78 people, ranging in age from 16 to 58, including some of the leaders.

The student-led protests, which were joined Sunday by the like-minded Occupy Central movement, have sought to occupy government property and shut down the business district.

The Grand Turk
Turkey Bans Tattoos, Piercings in Schools
[AnNahar] Turkey's Islamic-rooted government has banned pupils from wearing tattoos or body piercings in schools, a measure denounced by opponents as oppressive and unenforceable, reports said Sunday.
The Islamofascist totalitarianism deepens.
While tattoos are frowned upon by conservative elements in Turkey's diverse society, they are highly fashionable among secular urban youth, including school-age teens.

The measure is the latest hugely controversial measure taken by the government in education, after it allowed girls in high schools to wear the Moslem headscarf, a move critics said eroded Turkey's secular principles.

The ban, which was published in Turkey's official gazette on Saturday and reported by local media Sunday, also forbids the dyeing of hair, make-up, as well as mustaches and beards for boys.

The ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) co-founded by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan
... Turkey's version of Mohammed Morsi but they voted him back in so they deserve him...
is seeking to restore traditional values in Turkey, a drive seen by opponents as a bid to Islamise the country.

The head of the Egitim Is education union Veli Demir denounced the measure as impossible to enforce, given that tattoos could not be removed like a piece of clothing.

"Are they going to strip off their skin?" he asked, quoted by the Radikal online newspaper.

"What is going to happen to those (pupils) who already have tattoos? This is not a decision that a reasonable person can take. It is a decision taken without careful thought," he added.

"It is a decision taken by an oppressive mindset. Education is all about contributing to a child's development and protecting them," he said.

Ismail Koncuk, the head of another major education union, Egitim Sen, was more supportive of the move, saying there was no need for children with existing tattoos to have an operation.

He indicated the ban would apply only to children who want to get tattoos after it comes into force.

"There will be a confusion about when the tattoo was done," he admitted. "I believe that on this issue the school will take the initiative and help the child."

Erdogan has already made clear his distaste for tattoos, telling an up-and-coming young footballer in July to get rid of the tattoos on his arm.

"What are these tattoos? Why do you harm your body?" he told Berk Yildiz of the Galatasaray team.

"Don't be fooled by foreigners. God forbid, it could even give you skin cancer in the future," Erdogan said.

Congo fever: Cattle buyers advised to wear shirts with long sleeves
[DAWN] KARACHI: Two deaths from the Crimean-Congo fever within the span of a few weeks, with the latest being very close to the coming Eidul Azha, have alarmed doctors and health officials alike.

In the absence of a vaccine, taking preventive measures particularly while visiting cattle markets is the only way to protect against the disease, says Dr Syed Faisal Mahmood, assistant professor of infectious diseases at the Aga Khan University Hospital.

"It is not an airborne disease but is spread after a tick, coming from an animal, bites a person. They are too small to be seen. It'd be better to wear a long-sleeved shirt before going to buy animals.

Lawyers manhandle jail staff, media people
[DAWN] KASUR: Lawyers manhandled jail officials, including an assistant superintendent, outside a local court on Saturday, besides thrashing some media persons and snatching their cameras while they were reporting the incident.

To condemn highhandedness of lawyers, local journalists staged a protest demonstration and demanded protection during their work and action against those resorting to violence.

Sources say Advocate Farooq Azam, a member of district bar association, went to the district jail a few days back to get signed some documents by an under-trial prisoner. The lawyer had an argument with ASJ Muzaffar Husain during the process. He later filed a writ petition against four jail officials, including Mr Husain.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
IDF Repatriates Lost Gaza Camels
Anything can be a training mission, if properly approached.
[IsraelTimes] Under cover of darkness, the army company approached the Gazoo border fence, wary of possible enemy fire. Carefully and quietly, soldiers opened a large gate in the fence and stepped over the line, determined to complete their mission and return the hostages to their home.

No, this is not a description of a top secret operation performed during the summer war by elite commandos. It is, in fact, an account of an event which took place only days ago, and the two unwilling captives are, well, a pair of lost camels.

The two animals had accidentally crossed into Israel from the Gazoo Strip during Operation Protective Edge, Walla News reported Friday, having wandered over the border when the military opened sections of the fence to allow armored vehicles to move inside.

The two, part of a herd which remained on the Gazook side, did not stray far, but became stranded when the fence was resealed, and could not return home.

When the camels' owner -- who said they were worth around NIS 15 thousand (around $4,000) -- put in a request to the army through Paleostinian Authority officials to return his property to him, the military complied.

"It was important for us to help out," said Major Bassem Hinou of the Gazoo District Coordination Office which handles military-Paleostinian relations. "The owner...makes his living from tending to the camels and from their milk."

A military patrol quickly identified the two animals sauntering around a patch of foliage. They took them in, but their transfer over the border was considered somewhat dangerous, as army commanders feared opening the border gate could lead to myrmidon fire against the troops. And so the task was treated as a military operation, with all the caution such action entails.

An entire company of Givati infantry soldiers was dispatched to the border after nightfall Thursday, near the location of the Gazoo herd.

"The border fence gate was opened and (military trackers) let the camels loose," Hinou recounted. "The older camel went over into the Paleostinian territory, but the younger camel tried to come back."

"The soldiers and the trackers had to drag him over to the Paleostinian side," he added.

Hinou said the army was later notified that "the camels reached their owners."

Mission accomplished.
