At least 23 dead in Alabama tornadoes, while winter storm blasts the Northeast
[CNBC] Rescuers sifted through rubble looking for more dead and wounded after two back-to-back tornadoes touched down in Alabama, killing at least 23 people, authorities said.

The storms inflicted their worst damage on Lee County, Alabama Sunday, an area that includes the state's largest city of Auburn, destroying numerous homes and businesses.

More than 50 people were reported injured and the death toll is expected to rise.

Meanwhile, about 10 inches of snow was expected to fall in the New York City area by Monday morning with the arrival of another arctic blast, prompting all schools in the city to be closed and New Jersey to declare a state of emergency.

In 2018 there were only 10 all year.

#5  Just spent three hours out in that crap - they were calling for 4" to 8" and we got 16" instead. A fairly big branch landed on the sidewalk in front of my house, so out came the circular saw. A sawzall would've been better, but mine shit the bed last year. Small bits of tree branch got caught in my snowblower's auger, so that was fun to deal with.

Four US tourists, pilot killed in Kenya chopper crash
[Africa Tembelea] Nairobi ‐ Four American tourists and a Kenyan pilot were killed when their helicopter crashed on a remote island in a lake in northwest Kenya, police said Monday.

The accident occurred in the Central Island National Park in Lake Turkana on Sunday evening, police said in a statement.

"There were five people on board, four of them were US citizens and the pilot, Capt Marious Magonga," the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority said in a statement.

Magonga owned the helicopter and also piloted for Kenya’s deputy president, William Ruto.

The helicopter "lost contact and crashed" shortly after taking off with a second chopper from Lake Turkana’s Central Island, the statement said.

Rescuers found the wreckage about seven hours later "with no survivors".

"The cause of the incident is yet to be established and the details of the deceased will be released once the next of kin have been notified," a police statement said.

Known as the Jade Sea, Lake Turkana, is the most saline lake in East Africa, the largest desert lake in the world, and a popular tourist spot.

Its Central Island is made up of three active volcanoes, according to the Kenya Wildlife Service.

Zimbabwe's Akashinga Brigade - Anti poachers (interesting video)
[France24] Zimbabwe is one of the African countries worst affected by poaching. In an unprecedented move, an all-female unit has been created in the north of the country to track down poachers. The rangers are known as the Brave Ones. FRANCE 24's reporters went to meet these women who risk their lives to protect their country's wildlife.

In the Zambezi Valley in northern Zimbabwe, the local biodiversity is endangered by poaching. The main victims of this illegal trade are elephants and rhinos, whose ivory and horns are sold for a small fortune on Asian markets.

But for the past year, a group of around 30 rangers have developed a new way to fight poaching. This unit is made up exclusively of women ‐ a considerable achievement, since being a ranger was previously a job only held by men. The Akashinga("the Brave Ones"), are led by Damien Mander, a former Australian army sniper who has become a champion of the animal cause. The women have followed the same military training as any other ranger.

Britain
Prince Charles and Camilla Will Be the First Royals to Make an Official Visit to Cuba
[Town & Country] No member of the royal family has stepped foot in Cuba since Fidel Castro established the communist state in 1959. Rumors that Prince Charles and Camilla would break tradition to do so have been swirling since November, when a court circular noted that "The President of the Republic of Cuba called upon The Prince of Wales at Clarence House," per the Telegraph.

This morning, Clarence House confirmed that the royal couple would travel to Cuba, as a part of a larger tour of the Caribbean, marking the first "official visit" by a member of the royal family to the country. Here's what we know so far.

THE TRIP IS PLANNED FOR MARCH 24TH THROUGH THE 27TH.
Per the Prince of Wales's website, the visit to Cuba will be made "to highlight the growing bilateral relationship with the U.K. and showcase some of the cultural links between the two countries."

Overseas royal trips such as this are planned by the U.K.'s Foreign Office, and generally have the aim of exercising a "soft power" unlike that of politicians, as the Telegraph explains. No British Prime Minister has visited communist Cuba, but following Barack Obama's historic trip to the country in 2016, it seems that the U.K. is testing the waters.

The packed few days of engagements range from an official dinner with Cuba's president to a visit to a music studio. All have been arranged to "explore key themes, such as the arts, youth entrepreneurship, heritage restoration, and sustainable agriculture."

India-Pakistan
India Readies 750,000 Russian Assault Rifles and a Nuclear Submarine. Is Pakistan in the Crosshairs?
[CCN] India is stockpiling an enormous arsenal of weaponry and military equipment.

According to an announcement on Sunday, March 3rd, India will make a quarter of a million new assault rifles for the Indian army. India’s president Narendra Modi opened the new Kalashnikov plant in partnership with Russian.

India is also expected to sign a lease for a Russian nuclear attack submarine this week. The $3 billion deal will see India take control of a fully-customized nuclear vessel.

Tensions between India and Pakistan have simmered down since last month’s airstrikes. However, India is ramping up its arsenal. Is this a sign of defense or aggression towards Pakistan?

750,000 RUSSIAN ASSAULT RIFLES IN PRODUCTION
India’s new arms factory will churn out 750,000 AK 203s. The weapon is an upgrade from the AK 100, which itself evolved from the infamous AK 47. While the firepower is much the same, the AK 203 is more accurate and better designed. It can also be equipped with a laser sight.

President Modi thanked his "friend" Vladimir Putin as he opened the facility in Amethi, a city in the state of Uttar Pradesh.

The factory is a joint venture between Russia’s Kalashnikov Concern and India’s Ordnance Factory Board (OAB). It’s the latest development in a long history of collaboration between India and Russia. As Putin explained:

Police suspect 21-year-old neighbour behind rape, murder of minor Karachi girl
[DAWN] Police on Sunday claimed to have achieved a "breakthrough" in the rape and murder case of a 10-year-old girl who was found dead on Friday night in Bloody Karachi
...formerly the capital of Pakistain, now merely its most important port and financial center. It is among the largest cities in the world, with a population of 18 million, most of whom hate each other and many of whom are armed and dangerous...
's Bin Qasim area.

The girl, a resident of Marshal Yard Railway Colony in Bin Qasim, had gone missing at around 6pm on Friday. Police claim that the family did not report her disappearance. The relatives themselves started a search and found her body ‐ with her hands and legs tied ‐ inside the water tank on the third floor of the building where no one was living.

The body was shifted to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) where doctors confirmed that she was raped and strangulated to death.

"The case has almost been cracked," revealed DIG East Amir Farooqi.

He said the suspect, aged around 21, is a neighbour of the dear departed child from the same apartment building. During an initial probe into the case, he "confessed" to raping and killing the girl.

The senior officer added that they were waiting for the DNA test's findings on samples taken from the held suspect to formally arraign him in the case.

The suspect told the Sherlocks that he murdered the girl out of fear of being identified.

Navy Version of Joint Strike Fighter Now Operational on USS Carl Vinson
[Times of San Diego] Navy and Marine Corps commanders have jointly declared the aircraft carrier variant of the Joint Strike Fighter to be operational on the iconic USS Carl Vinson.

Initial operational capability for the first squadron of 10 F-35C Lightning II fighters was officially declared last week.

"The F-35C is ready for operations, ready for combat and ready to win," said Vice Admiral DeWolfe Miller, commander of naval air forces. "We are adding an incredible weapon system into the arsenal of our carrier strike groups that significantly enhances the capability of the joint force."

The first operational squadron is the "Argonauts," Strike Fighter Squadron 147 based at Naval Air Station Lemoore near Fresno.

The Navy version is the first 5th generation warplane to operate from an aircraft carrier. It carries more fuel that the Air Force and Marine versions, and has larger wings that fold up for carrier storage.
