Facebook-owner Meta to roll out paid subscription
[France24] Lololololo....NO.
Facebook and Instagram owner Meta will launch a paid subscription service starting at $11.99 a month allowing users to verify their accounts, CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced Sunday, following a similar move by Elon Musk at Twitter.

Meta Verified, which will roll out first in Australia and New Zealand this week, will let users "verify your account with a government ID, get a blue badge, get extra impersonation protection against accounts claiming to be you, and get direct access to customer support," Zuckerberg said.

"This new feature is about increasing authenticity and security across our services," he wrote in a statement posted to his Facebook account.

There would be no changes to accounts on Facebook and Instagram that are already verified, the company said, adding that only users who are over the age of 18 will be allowed to subscribe. The service is not yet available to businesses.

Musk's initial attempts to launch a similar service at rival social media network Twitter last year backfired wildly with an embarrassing spate of fake accounts that scared advertisers and cast doubt on the site's future.

He was forced to briefly suspend the effort before relaunching it to muted reception in December.

Meta's announcement comes as the social media behemoth grappled with financial difficulties over the past year, announcing in November that it would lay off 11,000 employees or 13 percent of its staff -- the largest worker reduction in the company's history.

The layoffs are part of a wave of redundancies announced by Silicon Valley giants in recent months, as the once unassailable sector faces economic gloom.

Meta is also under pressure for making a huge gamble on the metaverse, the world of virtual reality that Zuckerberg believes will be the next frontier online.

Investors last year punished Meta, sending the company's share price down by an astonishing two thirds over 12 months, but the stock has recovered some of the ground in 2023.

Zuckerberg has remained optimistic about Meta's future.

Earlier this month the company reported its first annual sales drop since it went public in 2012, but the fall was less brutal than expected.

-Lurid Crime Tales-
Oakland goes dark as fire rips through California power substation following a series of targeted attacks on across US: Flights are grounded and 50,000 residents are plunged into darkness as officials launch investigation
[Daily Mail, where America gets its news] In the East it was recently revealed that neo-Nazis were plotting from prison to do this kind of thing, but it was not revealed who actually has been doing it. Along the west coast it’s good odds that anything destructive like this or setting fires is either bored yoots or Black Bloc trying to trigger the revolution.
  • The Oakland Airport in Northern California lost power Sunday evening

  • An outage in the area impacted roughly 50,000 customers after a fire at an electrical substation in Alameda County

  • Pacific Gas and Electric officials are investigating the incident, which comes after a series of attacks on substations across the U.S. in recent weeks

It's still unclear if Sunday's incident was a targeted attack however there have been multiple substation attacks in recent months across the entire U.S.

Over the last three months, at least nine substations spanning North Carolina, Washington, and Oregon have cut power to thousands of customers.

The attacks are worrisome for those in states and areas where a lack of power could turn deadly.

In December, unidentified individuals attacked two power substations in Moore County, North Carolina, where some 45,000 people lost power.

Some customers were without power for up to five days.

Just weeks later, another attack occurred in Randolph County, North Carolina.

In Washington state, two men were charged just after New Year's Day for attacking four power stations on Christmas, leaving thousands in the dark and cold for the holidays.

The two men planned the attacks as a red herring so they could burglarize a local business, law enforcement officials said after the fact.

Between Washington and Oregon, there were six attacks on substations between mid-November and December in 2022.

The increasing number of attacks has caused some legislators to ring the alarm over the safety and security of substations across the country.

Bills have been proposed in states like North Carolina, South Carolina, and Arizona in recent weeks that would require 24-hour security at the power stations, or harsh penalties for attacks.

#2  Could be urban arson.
Could be more failed PG&E equipment.

Power slowly returns after outage, fire at Pacific Gas & Electric substation in Oakland
Posted by: Skidmark || 02/20/2023 7:10 Comments || Top||

#3  PG&E does have older substation equipment than most other utilities. Their Coliseum substation, where this occurred, is no exception. As it is, one transformer caught fire and the station's safety mechanisms kicked in to shut down the rest

Substation transformers do occasionally catch fire all by themselves, or with help from the local fauna building nests in their cooling systems, so the jury is still out.

Youth pastor, foster parent arrested for human trafficking in Florida
[NYPOST] Two Florida men were arrested for human trafficking after allegedly soliciting minors for sexual activity on social media, according to officials.

Moises Escoto, a 36-year-old youth pastor, and Joel Lutz, a 38-year-old registered foster parent, were arrested in connection with a human trafficking investigation, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office said.

The sheriff’s office said its human trafficking team launched an investigation after a mother reported finding disturbing content on her 16-year-old’s phone.

Investigators discovered that Escoto contacted the victim two years ago on a chat and meetup app called Sniffies. Since initially making contact with the teenager, Escoto allegedly solicited sexually explicit pictures and videos in exchange for money and gifts.

Escoto was also secretly meeting with the victim and engaging in sexual acts, Sherlocks said. He was a youth pastor at Iglesia de Cristo Misionera Mahanaim Church. He was arrested on Feb. 9.

During the investigation, deputies found that Lutz had engaged in sexual acts with a minor he also found on the Sniffies app in exchange for money. Lutz was arrested on Feb. 15 at his job at Outback Steakhouse.

LA Auxiliary Bishop David O'Connell shot dead: 'He was a peacemaker'
Apparently not a real good one.
[NYPOST] A prominent Los Angeles Catholic official, who served the community for over four decades, was fatally shot Saturday in a Caliphornia, an impregnable bastion of the Democratic Party, suburb.
[BANG!] "Dis is for your position on da Homoöusian Controversy, yer Excellency!"
"Gah! [STAGGER!] That wuz two thousand years ago! [GASP!]... Our side won!"
"Dat's what we wanted youse to t'ink!"

David O’Connell, the Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, was found inside a Hacienda Heights home with a severe gunshot wound to his upper torso and pronounced dead, according to CBS Los Angeles.
"Hmmm... Seven gunshot wounds to the torso in the shape of a cross... Legume! My saxophone! I must cogitate!"
He was 69 years old.
"I wonder... A sexual symbolism?"
"Y'can't get from 68 to 70 without stopping at 69, Inspector!"
"Not even if you went to Harrisburg for a year?"
"You'd have to be careful. You might come out feelin' 81 after a year!"

Archbishop José H. Gomez released a statement on O’Connell’s death early Saturday morning, saying he had "passed away unexpectedly."
"He wasn't expecting seven rounds of .40 cal."
"He was a peacemaker
"... though not a very good one..."
with a
...now perforated...
heart for the poor and the immigrant, and he had a passion for building a community where the sanctity and dignity of every human life was honored and protected," Gomez said.
That worked well.

-Great Cultural Revolution
She fled the war in Ukraine but failed to find a safe haven in S.F. middle school

[SF Chronicle] Everything Yana, a 13-year-old Ukrainian refugee, knew about public schools in the United States was what she had seen on television or in the movies, often idyllic settings where teenage conflict and angst ironed itself out by the end.

She never imagined herself in those American classrooms.

Then the bombs started falling after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and Yana and her mom fled for their lives in March, leaving friends, family and the memories of a typical teenage life filled with choir practice, art classes and homework.

Carrying the trauma of war and few personal belongings, the pair eventually landed in San Francisco where she started the new semester in January despite speaking little English.

There she joined hundreds of city students reeling from their own tragedies — loss of loved ones in the pandemic, poverty and homelessness. Like Yana, other students had fled their home countries to escape violence and death.

It didn’t take Yana long to realize that real life in her eighth-grade classes at Marina Middle School was nothing like the scenes that played out on her screen.

"I thought it was going to be better because it’s San Francisco," she said in Ukrainian, with her aunt translating. "But after two days, I saw everything going on at the school."

Students interrupted classes, jumped on desks, cursed at teachers. At first, Yana wondered what was going on, but then "nothing happened." Students were not disciplined or prevented from repeat behavior.

"After one week, I understood that was normal," said Yana, whose last name The Chronicle agreed not to publish in accordance with its source policy.

Not long after, Yana said, she became the target.

Her experience echoes what many parents and teachers have said is an escalating problem in the city’s middle schools, with bullying, violence and defiant students creating an untenable learning environment. While the situation has worried many students, staff and parents, for a girl already fleeing violence and chaos, it’s been particularly difficult....

California city bans homeless tent encampments on the streets: Hundreds of people living in makeshift shelters will be forced to flee - despite decision receiving fierce backlash from Democrat council members
  • Culver City voted to clear out and ban homeless tents as several flood the city

  • The ordinance will push homeless in the city to seek available housing solutions

  • City officials are working to convert motels into housing for the homeless

Culver City officials voted three to two on Monday to bar tents and other structures - and the change will come into effect when more housing models for the homeless become available, including a Project Room Key site and a designated homeless area at Virginia Parking Lot.

Dan O'Brien, Culver City Councilman, claimed officials needed to quickly take action as the neighboring City of Los Angeles' Mayor Karen Bass pledged last year to get over 17,000 homeless people into housing in her first year through a mix of interim and permanent facilities.

'A fear of mine is if we don’t have all the tools in place to help our own unhoused and Los Angeles already have the enforcement along our borders, then those who refuse housing will just cross the street into Culver City, and then further strain our resources,' O'Brien told The Los Angeles Times.

The ordinance, which has no enforcement date, allows homeless people remain on the streets with only sleeping bags and blankets. Culver City is one of Los Angeles County's 88 cities.

The ordinance will go into effect when about 100 beds are made available through various programs in the city.

Megyn Kelly: Prince Harry, Meghan Markle 'won't recover' from 'South Park' dig
[NYPOST] Megyn Kelly says Prince Harry

...unlikable American former starlet married to the formerly likable Prince Harry. Chock full of lefty political opinions and not many brains, Markle's most important characteristic is that she is Black, even though she doesn't look it. Once married, she was too classy for the Royals and she and Harry decamped to Beverly Hills, kind of like the Clampetts did, because she was so much classier than the Winsdors....
simply "won’t recover" from a recent "South Park" episode that mocked the exiled royals.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s decision to move across the pond in a desperate bid for privacy was mercilessly ridiculed in the show’s latest episode, titled "The Worldwide Privacy Tour."

"I feel this is a pronouncement that they have jumped the shark, they are not beloved and her hopes of running for president, reported hopes, are all but dashed," Kelly, 52, said
President Meghan Muckle? You gotta be kidding.
on "The Megyn Kelly Show" released Friday.

"That’s not happening. When ’South Park’ turns on you, there’s no recovering."

Kelly was referring to the widespread speculation that the Duchess of Sussex is eyeing a career in politics, adding fuel to the fire of unconfirmed reports that she got her sights set on the White House.

Gore, Buffet ditch TSMC shares...
[WCCFTech] After its filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) revealed that Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway had sold billions of dollars of TSMC's share's within months of buying them, former vice president Al Gore's investment firm Generation Investment Management has followed suit. The firm's filings from last week show that it has also sold its TSMC stake, but unlike Buffett, who chose to keep some shares, Generation Investment has exited its position entirely. Before its SEC filings, the firm also posted its quarterly investor letter, which, while not mentioning the reasons behind the disposal, did raise concerns about geopolitical tensions in the Taiwan strait and the vulnerability of the semiconductor supply chain.

Turkey ends quake rescue efforts except in two provinces; over 40,000 dead (plus 4,000 in Syria), 6,000 aftershocks, 105,000 damaged buildings
[AlAhram] The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the occupiers of Greek Asia Minor...
has ended rescue efforts in all provinces except the two hardest hit by last week's massive quake that killed tens of thousands of people, the Ottoman Turkish disaster agency said Sunday.

"In many of our provinces, search and rescue efforts have been completed. They continue in Kahramanmaras and Hatay provinces," the agency's chief Yunus Sezer told news hounds in Ankara.

The epicentre of the 7.8-magnitude earthquake on February 6 was in Pazarcik district in Kahramanmaras.

Sezer said search and rescue efforts continued at around 40 buildings in the provinces on the 14th day, but expected this number to fall by Sunday evening.

The agency head also said Turkey's corpse count had risen to 40,689.

The total corpse count including Syria is now 44,377.

Ottoman Turkish Vice President Fuat Oktay said Saturday that some 105,000 buildings either collapsed, needed to be demolished or were severely damaged in the quake.

There had been breathless coverage since the quake of rescue teams finding survivors. That has since slowed down with no survivors found in at least 24 hours.

On Saturday, rescuers found a man and a woman alive in the 296th hour in the southern Ottoman Turkish city of Antakya but their three children did not survive, local media said.

6,000 aftershocks, 100,000 badly damaged buildings following deadly quake: Turkish officials

[AlAhram] As the search and rescue effort for buried survivors of the Feb. 6 earthquake started to wind down in The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire...
, demolition teams have moved in to clear the mounds of rubble left by the worst disaster in modern Ottoman Turkish history.

Here's a look at the key developments Sunday from the aftermath of the earthquake.

MORE THAN 6,000 AFTERSHOCKS HIT FOLLOWING QUAKE
Turkey's disaster management said some 6,040 aftershocks hit the 11 provinces that form the disaster zone declared by the government in the days following the initial quake.

The initial quake was measured with a magnitude of 7.8, and was followed nine hours later by a 7,5 magnitude tremor.

Orhan Tatar, general manager of the agency, AFAD, said 40 aftershocks were of a 5 to 6 magnitude, while one was recorded at 6.6.

"It is extremely important to stay away from damaged buildings and not enter them,'' he told a televised news briefing in Ankara.

He also warned of "secondary disasters'' such as landslides and rockfalls.

INSPECTIONS FIND OVER 100,000 BADLY DAMAGED BUILDINGS
Some 105,794 buildings checked by Turkey's Environment and Urbanization Ministry are either destroyed or so badly damaged as to require demolition, the ministry said Sunday.

Of these, 20,662 had collapsed, the statement said. The damaged or destroyed buildings contained more than 384,500 units, mostly residential apartments.

The figures were for Turkey and did not cover collapsed and damaged buildings in neighboring Syria.

Wreckage of US Navy submarine from World War II found off Japan's coast
[NY Post] The wreckage of a U.S. submarine found off the coast of northern Japan has been identified as the USS Albacore — a vessel believed by the Navy to have struck a mine and sunk during the heart of World War II.

The Naval History and Heritage Command made the announcement Thursday after several months of examining Japanese surveys conducted of the site in 2022.

Dr. Tamaki Ura and a team from the University of Tokyo used a remotely operated vehicle to obtain video of the wreckage site, which is believed to be hundreds of feet under the sea. Visibility was limited during excursions due to strong currents and marine growth in the region, making analysis challenging.

"As the final resting place for Sailors who gave their life in defense of our nation, we sincerely thank and congratulate Dr. Ura and his team for their efforts in locating the wreck of Albacore," Samuel J. Cox, a retired U.S. Navy rear admiral and NHHC director, said in a statement. "It is through their hard work and continued collaboration that we could confirm Albacore’s identity after being lost at sea for over 70 years."

The USS Albacore (SS-218) was only in service for just over two years when the vessel disappeared off one of Japan’s northernmost islands.

The last time the crew of more than 80 was last heard from was reported to be in late October 1944, during stops at Pearl Harbor and the island of Midway.

Just over a week later, a Japanese patrol boat reported seeing a great deal of oil amidst a debris field not far from Hokkaido, Japan.

The Albacore was part of a mass manufacture of Gato class submarines for World War II, and the vessel was credited by the U.S. Navy for sinking at least ten enemy vessels.

"Six of the ten enemy sinkings were enemy combatant ships, ranking her as one of the most successful submarines against enemy combatants during World War II," the Naval History and Heritage Command stated.

According to Naval historians, the U.S. lost 52 submarines during World War II, with the exact resting spots of many still unknown.

#3  When depth charges are dropped on a sub, the hull rings like a bell, from the inside you can see the hull vibrating 5 inches. Any hull fitting welds can break. In the movies you hear a bang, in real life the next noise is the gas pocket created by the explosion filling with water. I recommend “Red Star Rogue” and “Blind Mans Bluff” for stories about REAL submarines!

China-Japan-Koreas
North Korea fires pair of short-range missiles 2 days after ICBM test
[NYPOST] North Korea
...hereditary Communist monarchy distinguished by its truculence and periodic acts of violence. Distinguishing features include Songun (Army First) policy, which involves feeding the army before anyone but the Dear Leadership, and Juche, which is Kim Jong Il's personal interpretation of Marxism-Leninism, which he told everybody was brilliant. In 1950 the industrialized North invaded agrarian South Korea. Twenty-one countries of the United Nations eventually contributed to the UN force opposing the invasion, with the United States providing around 90% of the military personnel. Seventy years later the economic results are in and it doesn't look good for Juche...
has fired a pair of short-range ballistic missiles off its east coast on Monday, South Korea’s military said, two days after the North resumed testing activities with an intercontinental ballistic missile launch.

South Korea detected the two launches from a western coastal town, just north of Pyongyang, the North Korean capital, on Monday morning, South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said in a statement.

It said South Korea has boosted its surveillance posture and maintains a readiness in close coordination with the United States.

Japan’s coasties also issued warnings over what it called possible ballistic missile launches by North Korea.

The coasties, quoting the Defense Ministry information, said the first missile was believed to have already landed in the water. Kyodo News said it has landed outside the Japanese Exclusive Economic Zone.

Also Monday morning, Kim Yo Jong, the powerful sister of North Korean leader Kim Pudge Jong-un
...the overweight, pouty-looking hereditary potentate of North Korea. Pudge appears to believe in his own divinity, but has yet to produce any loaves and fishes, so his subjects remain malnourished...
, issued a statement warning of weapons demonstrations over what she called US deployments of strategic military assets to the Korean Peninsula. She called the United States "the worst maniacs."

China Demands U.S. Abandon Taiwan and Apologize for Shooting Down Spy Balloon
[pjmedia.com] After claiming its spy balloon was a harmless weather balloon and angrily condemning the Biden administration for shooting the balloon down (after it crossed the continental U.S.), the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) is now not only demanding that the U.S. take all the blame for the incident but also that the U.S. abandon its unofficial ally Taiwan. As usual, the genocidal CCP is uninhibited by any interest in truth or justice.

CCP state propaganda outlet Xinhua News published a statement from a Chinese Foreign Ministry (FM) spokesman on Feb. 19. The spokesman said that China acceded to a U.S. request and that Wang Yi, director of the Office of the Foreign Affairs Commission of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, unofficially met with U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken "on the margins of the Munich Security Conference." That wording itself practically drips with disdain.

And just as during the spy balloon debacle, Wang issued a sort of ultimatum, steadily insisting that the CCP — which has planted spies in every sector of U.S. society and government and has police stations in New York and Los Angeles — is thoroughly righteous and free from blame.

Wang accused the U.S. of "an abuse of the use of force and violation of customary international practice and the International Civil Aviation Covenant" by shooting down the spy balloon, which the CCP has claimed was a weather balloon accidentally driven off course. Wang accused America of being the "number one country in terms of surveillance," saying the U.S. "illegally" flew balloons over China a number of times.

What the U.S. needs to do is to demonstrate sincerity, and face up to and resolve the damage that its abuse of force has done to China-U.S. relations. If the U.S. continues to dramatize, hype up or escalate the situation, China will surely respond by doing what is necessary. All consequences arising thereof shall be borne by the U.S. side.

Wang boasted of China’s supposed "constructive role" in promoting peace regarding Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which has been going on for almost a year. "We never accept the U.S.’s finger-pointing or even coercion targeting China-Russia relations," Wang lectured, urging a settlement of the war, during which China has supported Russia’s claims. After pontificating about its alleged commitment to various noble ideals (forget the fact the CCP is the greatest mass murderer of all time), the spokesman’s statement added:

Wang pointed out that to maintain stability across the Taiwan Strait, "Taiwan independence" must be firmly opposed and the one-China principle must be credibly followed. On the Taiwan question, the U.S. side needs to respect history and the facts, abide by political commitments, and act upon the statement of "not supporting Taiwan independence."

Taiwan is legitimate and free China, and the CCP has no right to take over the country. Unfortunately, Taiwan might well be quickly abandoned by America if and when the CCP attacks because the U.S. State Department says, "The United States has a longstanding one China policy... We oppose any unilateral changes to the status quo from either side; we do not support Taiwan independence" (emphasis added). And we know the Biden administration can definitely be trusted to stick up for freedom against tyrannical regimes.

Government Corruption
Undercover DC Police Officer Pushed Protesters Toward Capitol, Climbed Over Barricade: Court Filing
[Epoch Times] New court motions filed by Jan. 6 defendant William Pope of Topeka, Kansas, also show MPD bicycle officers stopping four armed men in plainclothes on Jan. 6. The men turned out to be federal agents. Video included with Pope’s filings also shows uniformed MPD officers saying, "we were set up" to fail on Jan. 6.

"This video clearly evidences undercover law enforcement officers urging the crowds to advance up the stairs and scaffolding towards the Capitol on January 6," Pope wrote in one motion. "The government may claim that incidents like this did not happen, but the facts show they did.

"Since the government cannot be trusted to disclose these facts," Pope wrote, "it becomes even more important that defense teams, including Pro Se defendants, be able to directly examine the evidence."

Information in the court papers will rekindle the debate about the role that undercover officers and agents played in the riots of Jan. 6 and why the U.S. Department of Justice and federal judges have kept the evidence under seal and away from public view.

Brain implant thinner than hair: How a novel technology may allow people to use devices with their mind
[FOX] A new technological development could give people the ability to access their devices with only their minds.

Precision Neuroscience is introducing its breakthrough in medical science as a benefit for those who have experienced paralysis or other forms of limited mobility.

Precision CEO and co-founder Michael Mager shared in an interview with Fox News Digital how brain-computer interface (BCI) technology converts thoughts into action.
Does it work on Democrats?
"It's a direct communication pathway between the brain's electrical activity and an external device, most often a computer, but it also can be like a prosthetic," he said.

BCIs have been proven to be functional for more than 15 years, but to date have only been implanted in about 40 people — which New York City-based Mager said he considered a "real shame."

Lockheed Martin awarded Navy hypersonic missile contract worth over $1 billion
[FOX] Lockheed Martin announced Friday that it will receive a contract that's potentially worth more than $2 billion to integrate a hypersonic missile system onto certain U.S. Navy destroyers.

The deal, which is initially worth $1.1 billion, involves the integration of the Conventional Prompt Strike (CPS) hypersonic missile system onto the Navy's Zumwalt-class guided missile destroyers. If all contract options are exercised, that figure would rise to more than $2.2 billion.

"Lockheed Martin continues to advance hypersonic strike capability for the United States through this new contract," Steve Layne, Lockheed Martin's vice president of hypersonic strike weapon systems, said in a statement. "Early design work is already underway. Our team looks forward to supporting the warfighter by providing more options to further protect America at sea."
