US shooting leaves one dead, six injured at California birthday party
[AlArabiya] A US shooting at a birthday party killed an 18-year-old woman and injured six others in the state of California early Sunday, police said.

The Antioch Police Department responded to multiple 911 calls about a shooting just before 1 a.m. local time, the department said in a statement.

US shooting leaves three people dead, three injured in a Maryland home
[AlArabiya] Three people were killed and three wounded in a US shooting Sunday night at a house in the state of Maryland’s capital city, police said.

The city of Annapolis Police Chief Edward Jackson told reporters at a media briefing that the shooting stemmed from what he described as an “interpersonal dispute” and that there was no further threat to the public.

“It’s a very active and fluid investigation. We’re still trying to determine everything that occurred. We’re still piecing it together. We have a lot more work to do,” Jackson said.

Silvio Berlusconi gone to the Great Bunga Bunga in the Sky at 86

[NYPOST] Silvio Berlusconi, 86, the boastful billionaire media mogul who was Italia’s longest-serving premier despite scandals over his sex-fueled parties and allegations of corruption, died Monday, according to his television network.
Charlie Sheen wishes he could party like Silvio.
Mediaset announced his death with a smiling photo of the man on its homepage and the headline: "Berlusconi is dead."
Almost 90, he looked like a man in his 60's even without the Grecian Formula.
Berlusconi was hospitalized on Friday for the second time in months for treatment of chronic leukemia. He also suffered over the years from heart ailments, prostate cancer and was hospitalized for COVID-19 in 2020.
Most of us can point to similar lists.
A onetime cruise ship crooner, Berlusconi used his television networks and immense wealth to launch his long political career, inspiring both loyalty and loathing.
Which is what political careers usually do.
To admirers, the three-time premier was a capable and charismatic statesman who sought to elevate Italia on the world stage.
... without invading Ethiopia.

The thing with cargo, is that whatever air is in there is what you have for the flight. So pack enough of these whales in there, you just need to worry about disposal upon arrival.

#19  This idea that everybody has to get their own Magic Pony™ because it is their Rights™ is starting to get tedious.

What if you had a trainee that was so obese they couldn't wear proper (Personal Protective Equipment)? In this case the OSHA approved commercially available 'non-slip rubber boots' (which the Company provided gratis) in a wet vault milk cooler were way, way too small so they substituted store bought rubber galoshes and said it was 'all good' ...because he was on the DEI checklist. I was afraid that he would slip and break something or have a stress coronary, but was overruled ...because DEI.

Some time later amusingly enough the HR Department had a line worker apply for an open secretarial position according to Established Company Policy™. They blackballed him because it was an 'all girl shop' ...but that is different you see.

Ancient Persian Vertical Windmills Still Grinding Grain
[Epoch Times] When we think of wind power as a source of energy, we might think of huge, ugly turbines blighting the landscape. But one village in Iran reveals how our ancestors built turbines using wood and clay, not steel and concrete; with such smarts, they are still being used today—some thousand years on.

Blending into the semi-desert landscape, constructed high on a hill, an army of 40 windmills stand up to 65 feet (approx. 20 meters) high and serve two purposes: to act as a buffer, protecting the village from the raging air currents, and to grind grain into flour. Locals call the technique of using wind to power milling machinery "asbad." In a stroke of genius, Iranian architects positioned and designed the windmills in such a way as to "catch" the air in openings, causing the blades to spin, which in turn powers a vertical shaft that turns a millstone, grinding the grain.

Dubai court convicts large gang and seven Companies in money laundering, online scam
[WAM] The Dubai Money Laundering Court found a 30-member gang and seven companies guilty of money laundering and embezzling AED32 million ($8.71 million) through an elaborate online scam, the Dubai Media Office announced on Monday.

The court sentenced the suspects to a total of 96 years in prison, followed by deportation after time is served. They were also ordered to pay a fine of AED32 million.

The gang orchestrated the scam by sending 118,000 phishing emails to victims, posing as banks and financial institutions with whom the victims have existing relationships. The emails prompted the victims to make payments to the gang’s accounts.

China leading way as nuclear powers expand arsenals, report warns
[IsraelTimes] Era of slimming nuclear stockpiles is ending, Swedish think tank says, with China, Russia, India and Pakistain all deploying more bombs; Israel said to keep inventory unchanged
Given that China and Russia both have populations — and therefore armies — that are aging and shrinking, it’s probably prudent to increase supplies of the most powerful weapons to cover for those lacks. One does wonder how Pakistan is paying for theirs, given that the IMF still refuses to approve their budget proposals, and therefore still withholds approval for a new round of loans. India needs to hold her own with both China and Pakistan, so that choice is necessary.
The nuclear arsenals of several countries, especially China, grew last year and other atomic powers continued to modernize theirs as geopolitical tensions rise, researchers said Monday.

The annual report on the arsenals of the globe’s nine nuclear-armed powers claimed Israel, which does not acknowledge having such weapons, was one of four countries to not expand its stockpile, along with the United States, United Kingdom and La Belle France.

China struggles with weak post-COVID economic recovery
[An Nahar] Sales of Yizhuan Automobile Co.'s trash trucks picked up after China ended anti-virus controls in December, but their growth is in low gear as managers struggle to rebuild business lost during the pandemic.

China's economy rebounded at the start of 2023, but after a good first quarter, factory output and consumer spending are weakening. An official survey in April found a record 1 in 5 young workers in cities were unemployed.

Yizhuan's sales are up only by single-digit percentages from last year's depressed level, according to its deputy general manager, Yu Xiongli. The 300-employee company is in Hubei province, where the first coronavirus (aka COVID19 or Chinese Plague)
...the twenty first century equivalent of bubonic plague, only instead of killing off a third of the population of Europe it kills 3.4 percent of those who notice they have it. It seems to be fond of the elderly, especially Iranian politicians and holy men...
cases were detected in late 2019.

"It is still in the process of recovering," Yu said. "Growth is quite slow."

China's economic growth accelerated to 4.5% over a year earlier in the three months ending in March from the previous quarter's 2.9%, but forecasters say the peak of that recovery might already be past.

Growth would need to pick up further to reach the ruling Communist Party's target of "around 5%" for the year.

"For now, the ongoing momentum seems not that promising," said UBS economist Zhang Ning.

The economy needs a "domestic demand rebound" with government support to boost confidence for businesses and consumers, Zhang said.

The end of restrictions that isolated cities for weeks at a time and blocked most international travel prompted hopes for a consumer boom. But retail sales are weak. Shoppers are uneasy about the economic outlook and possible job losses and are reluctant to commit to big purchases.

Retail sales in April surged 18.4% over last year's lackluster level, but that was barely half the growth of up to 35% called for by private sector forecasts. Factory output fell 0.5% compared with March and investment growth slowed.

"I have misgivings about spending money," said Xue Liang, who works in information technology in Beijing. "COVID-19 and changes in the international situation have made us worry a lot."

Manufacturing contracted faster in May, according to a survey by the national statistics agency and an industry group. New orders and export orders declined.

Exports in May tumbled 7.5% from a year ago after global consumer demand was depressed by interest rate hikes by the Federal Reserve and central banks in Europa
...the land mass occupying the space between the English Channel and the Urals, also known as Moslem Lebensraum...
and Asia to cool inflation. Exports to the United States plunged 18.2%.

That is a challenge for automakers and other manufacturers that are trying to make up for weak demand at home by selling more abroad.

Tenglong Automobile Co., which makes electric buses in the southwestern city of Xiangyang, sent salespeople to Russia, South Korea and Southeast Asia as soon as travel controls ended to try to revive orders after a three-year gap.

"Last year, our foreign customers basically didn't come," said Tenglong's deputy general manager, Zhou Shengming. "But this year, we already have had several batches. In May, we had three."

Chinese deployed aircraft to monitor US, France, Canada, Japan naval drill: Report
[AlArabiya] China deployed a reconnaissance plane over Pacific waters east of Taiwan last week that Chinese media said monitored and gathered intelligence on an exercise involving the navies of the United States, Japan, France, and Canada.

A Y-9 cargo aircraft variant fitted with intelligence-gathering equipment most likely monitored and collected intelligence on the exercise, Chinese state-backed Global Times reported on Sunday, citing analysts.

Israel tells US it plans to announce thousands of settlement homes later this month
Need somewhere to house all those fleeing Ukrainians...
[IsraelTimes] Israel has informed the US that it plans to announce "thousands" of new settlement homes later this month, an Israeli official says.

The official, confirming a report first published by the Walla news site, tells The Times of Israel that it was not clear whether the settlement plans would all be approved in back-to-back meetings of the Civil Administration’s High Planning Subcommittee, as is traditionally the case, or whether the meetings would be spread out over several weeks.

According to Walla, the Biden administration, which is opposed to all settlement construction, is pushing Israel to hold off on the announcement or scale it back.
Another reason for the US State Department funded Movement for Quality Government (MQG) to come out and protest — now that interest in protesting the judicial overhaul is fading, a new cause i needed to trigger the thoughtless masses.

The Israeli plans come after the US last week pressured Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to delay plans to advance the highly controversial E1 settlement project.
