Exclusive: What's Wrong with the Anti-Idiotarian Blogosphere?
An original opinion by Atomic Conspiracy:
Little Green Footballs goes down for several hours every day, without exception, and has been doing this for weeks. This apparently has something to do with the unending series of updates about which LGF owner Charles Johnson posts every day. That is all well and good but, frankly, LGF's endless technical failures and outages are making it look ridiculous. They are the subject of much mirth and derision at Kos, DU, and Huffpo, none of which ever seem to be down or even slow.

Elsewhere, the Anti-Idiotarian Rottweiler is so screwed up it cannot accept the same password twice. It is necessary to re-register and get a new password each and every time you want to sign on, a minor inconvenience once but a major and pointless irritation as a routine procedure.

Rantburg itself is down during the late night hours more often than not.

Only Free Republic, the often embarrassing paleocon peanut gallery of creationists, gay-bashers, "Arkancide" conspira-loons, UFOols, and the Hate Hillary cult, seems to be able to match lefty tech prowess. It is not really a blog in any case.

I used to make fun of lefty sites for being "powered by 12 volt organic solar cells hung from the roof of the Unabomber's outhouse." Apparently the lefties got the message and our side did not.

#1  Atomic Conspiracy, I'm almost afraid to ask but what is an "Arkancide conspira-loon?"
Posted by: Secret Master || 04/10/2007 0:51 Comments || Top||

#2  That is someone who asserts that the Clintons have assassinated something like 50 people (or is it 500?) and gotten away scot-free despite the apparently overwhelming evidence presented in various conspiracy books and websites.
It seems that every unnatural death in the state of Arkansas during the Clinton governorship (and for some time afterward) can somehow be connected to the evil Hildabeast and her nefarious husband.
If the evidence were really as good as claimed, we might reasonably expect Ken Starr or other GOP prosecutors to have pursued it to a conviction, but conspiracists can dodge that too, simply by inventing new conspiracies.
More at Snopes.com

I despise the Clintoons, but this kind of thing is a disgrace and a diversion.
Leftists are delighted with it, for the same reason we are glad to see lefties alleging that Dubya is a disguised reptoid from the fourth dimension and is making massive profits by selling kidnap victims to his fellow aliens for food.

#3  They are the subject of much mirth and derision at Kos, DU, and Huffpo, none of which ever seem to be down or even slow.

It's called 'money', AC. Huffy has sources. So does Kos. I s'pect DU has them as well.

It translates into reliable servers, operated by reliable companies, staffed by reliable people.

Now, Mister Original Opinionist - how does one get that?
Posted by: Pappy || 04/10/2007 1:19 Comments || Top||

#4  I think the righty blogs get DOS'd a lot... there's a lot of slacker "hacktivists" who spend a lot of time trying to take down their 'enemies', enemies who rarely if ever fight back.

Lefties really, really hate any opinion they haven't given to you.

The back side of the 'Burg has been hit fairly hard by (spammers, bots, hax0rz, you name it) from overseas and we're waiting for teh hosting company to give us mods the remote kickstart tool. Or else we'll just prop Fred at the keyboard 24/7 and poke him with a sharp stick every 15 minutes.

CJ has many fewer good excuses, though LGF has a much higher profile and many, many determined hataz. CJ has (or had) a big boatload of cash from the PJM launch, and I myself have also been curious about the prolonged downtime and wordy discussions of his server loads.
Posted by: Seafarious || 04/10/2007 1:35 Comments || Top||

#5  I'll talk about it anyway Pappy, because money is probably the root of the problem (though LGF at least has plenty of dough for server and bandwidth upgrades).

We seem to be a little too committed to the pure grassroots approach to internet activism, while Kos and his fellow gangsters, though late in arriving, have moved on to the kind of fund-raising associated with major political players.

There is no good reason for these lefties to be better financed than the loyalists. Soros, Buffet, Turner, and others of that ilk are not the only rich people in the world. It seems that wealthy conservatives are far less likely to take the net seriously, possibly because Dubya didn't claim to have invented it.

This is my impression talking to the local fatcats at any rate. Their feelings about the net are often connected to the dot.com bubble (in which some of them lost millions) and its real importance is often lost on them. There is a precedent for this: in the 50s conservatives were slow to accept television as a force to be reckoned with. This is too bad because, unlike TV, the net is tailored to a decentralized and individualistic ideology.

We don't really have to match the lefties' funding, but we do have to get a little closer to the ballpark. LGF, with a budget at the time in the low 5 figure range managed to humble the giga-buck empire of CBS News.

The first step is a small one. That is to make others aware of the problem. It will ripple out from there.

#8  Yeah, no kidding JFM. :( You should have seen the people come out in defense of the horribly evil corporation Microsoft a few days ago. It's an awful system, especially for a web server/database combination. My theory is that it's blind patriotism, supporting the "good" Microsoft against the "evil" other. Obviously these supporters have never encountered the horror that is Microsoft Exchange.

#11  Besides, it's more likely that conservative bloggers have day jobs. :-)

If you guys insist on using XP, have you thought of using a VNC session through a VPN tunnel or the like to be able to be able to allow a couple more mods to remotely access the kickstart tool, whatever that is? I'm just a user, so I don't know if that's too risky or not.

#16  AC: Pajamas Media, which Charles is a member, is going through some problems at the moment. From what I can glean from posts I have read is that member blogs are taking pay cuts severe enough for them to bail. That means that PJM is undergoing financial hardships and I suspect that even those at the top of the $7 million pyramid are in panic mode.

From what Chalres says on his blog, the task to switch over from a flat file system to a database is an arduous task. Remember last year when Fred started switching over and all kinds of technical issues cropped up including DDOSes?

I s'pect Charles is going through the same thing, except he is dealing with an uncertain future with PJM.

#17  Oh, I forgot.

Read this analysis on PJM and Charles Johnson.
Posted by: badanov || 04/10/2007 7:48 Comments || Top||

#18  AC, I think the left takes the blogs more seriously because of Howard Dean's success in using the web to rally and motivate in a way the right has yet to do.

In the right side the web is used more as a watchdog (see Rathergate) and less to earn money and provide talking points for pundits (which oddly enough is what the left does but claims the Republicans do.)

open a new account with PayPal. First get a new free e-mail account, Hot-Mail or GMAIL or etc.

go to PayPal and re-register. after they send you a link to the new mail account you can add two more e-mails to your paypal account.

BTW there are tons of PayPal spoof e-mails that look just like paypal so BEWARE only answer emails that you know are coming from https://www.paypal.com. if you have any doubts click on the security center tab at PayPal and follow the instructions.

#20  Gromky,

"You should have seen the people come out in defense of the horribly evil corporation Microsoft a few days ago. It's an awful system, especially for a web server/database combination. My theory is that it's blind patriotism, supporting the "good" Microsoft against the "evil" other. Obviously these supporters have never encountered the horror that is Microsoft Exchange."

Now, that's not fully accurate about the thread a few days back ... At least for my part. I did not defend MS, just pointed out the benefit to near homogenous world on the DESK SIDE which MS/Windows brought ... and the catalyst in the industry MS was (back in the day).

For my part, it is no blind patriotism to MS, far from it, just pointing out the other side of the coin. Been around many a mainframe, mini and micro and the PCs. Like I said, I remember the industry before this time and still recall the pain before the desk side stabilized.

I recognize MS can be a very evil corporation and produce buggy software. But there is the other side of the whole deal that one cannot hide from - MS was a major catalyst to the industry. That was my point, not meant as a defense to MS.

Personally one of my favs, to this day, is VMS. Nice, simple, OS. Little dated, but there are many an VAX/Alpah these days running our backing transactions (well, Big Blue Iron, and some Fujistsu as well). The loss of DEC in the industry was a very sad day.

Linux is great as well, got a few boxes running at home. Still hoping to play with a SCSI based Beowulf cluster ... I have the parts handy, but not the time :(

And yes, I've worked with Exchange ;)

#21  I'm not at all comfortable with slamming Charles Johnson for his updates and explanations thereof. He's got a huge amount of work on his plate and this switchover he's managing is a huge task; moreover, he gets DDOSed fairly regularly, not to mention massive hits from Drudge and the odd Instalanche. I'd rather LGF were up more often than it is, but I fell pretty certain that CJ will have things stable soon. (I don't know about PJM; I rarely go there and never thought it was a viable business model in the first place.)

And, yes, most right-wing bloggers have day jobs. Don't laugh; people on the left seem to be more willing to give up (or totally forgo) careers for the sake of supporting a cause. To paraphrase a famous statement, careful tradesmen and dedicated farmers will be more concerned with looking to their tasks than participating in the business of faction.

Afghanistan
His name is Eric Damfreville
Food for thought from Dr. Rusty Shackleford
A French aid worker named Eric Damfreville is being held hostage by the Taliban. Another French aid worker only identified as Salma is also being held hostage.

These hostages have families and friends. Please do not forget them. The media has. They have names. We are the only news outlet in the world that has named Eric Damfreville. I have no idea why.

Damfreville is a humanitarian, a child welfare activist, an educator, and a blogger. He was in rural Afghanistan educating and helping children recover from 20 years of war. Do not forget him.

His name is Eric Damfreville. His name is Eric Damfreville.

With the Taliban beheading hostage Adjmal Nakshbandi, and threatening the same to an Afghan hostage identified as Dr. Khalilullah, it is important to recognize the barbarity of the enemy we fight and never to forget the innocent who they deliberately murder.

Africa Subsaharan
Zimbabwe: When Thieves Fall Out - Last Act
Gwynne Dyer
IT will take a while, but the long and brutal reign of Robert Mugabe in Zimbabwe is probably nearing its end. It is not because of the democratic opposition at home, whose members are regularly beaten up and sometimes killed by the police. Not even because neighbouring countries in southern Africa are at last putting pressure on Mugabe to go. It is just because his own partners-in-crime have decided that it is him or them.

The key moment actually came last December, when for the first time the senior ranks of the ruling Zanu-PF Party stood up to Mugabe and refused to accept his proposal to postpone the next presidential election from 2008 to 2010. It was typical Mugabe salami tactics - give me two more years and maybe I will decide to resign in 2010, but this time it did not work. "In that case," said Mugabe, "I'll run for president again in 2008." (which would keep him in the presidency for his 90th birthday in 2014). Given the speed with which Zimbabwe's economy is collapsing and its population fleeing abroad, seven more years of Mugabe and it will not be worth inheriting power there. So Mugabe's potential heirs within Zanu-PF itself have begun to rebel.

#3  He has just imported 3,000 "security personnel" from Angola to stiffen his police, who are deserting in droves and going to work in South Africa as security guards because inflation has made their wages in Zimbabwe almost worthless.

Ah. The real story here. Despots can continue to murder and rob as long as their thugs get paid. When the despot loses his head in sufficient hubris to allow him to think that he doesn't need to pay his henchmen, then he's on the way out.

Of course, don't look for Mugabe's successor to be any better.

#5  The ideal outcome would be an alliance between Zanu-PF dissidents and Zimbabwe's democratic opposition in a transitional government leading to free, internationally supervised elections.

O-kay. like anyone is interested? Really worked last time, with all them English Bobbies and Bob Marley.....and, forget about all the dealing with any kind of Zanu-pf, they created this madhouse run by monkeys, no racial slur intended, don't know why alligning with Zanu-pf dissidents was mentioned in the article, they all scum.

Jealous rage, indeed, Mr Zen. Possibly because he started with such a wealth of everything and just happened to give any interests away to the Chinese, and now he has nothing.

A COMBAT SOLDIER'S PRAYER
by Gary Jacobson © 1999

This combat soldier's prayer,
Who has served his time in Hell,
Is may we learn the lessons of war well,
That we not doom future generations,
The same old tales of horror to tell,
To endure what in youth they see mistakenly as glory.
Oh God, do not let our children
Repeat the same old story.

Make it so that America's babies live to grow old
In this land of the free and the bold.
Help us throw off the shackles of hate that bind
And grow old in a life of a peaceful kind.

Teach us that there is no glory in war,
Nor honor there that brave men should not abhor.
Teach us instead, one for another our brothers to love.
Shower us with thine Celestial message from above,
That we plant seeds of peace evermore
And make war-no-more!

But if I should die on some far, far away battlefield
Know I answered the call
For a grand principle of freedom to yield.
My fervent prayer is that death
May not have been in vain
Fighting for peace and right for the world to attain.

My brothers, American roses standing by my side
On alien soil dying
In the summer of my youthful pride
All the leaves around me falling,

Now I’m lying here still, in sunshine and in shadow,
Longing to hear, “brother next door, I love you so."
For moldering in the soft ground below,
I feel you living and loving in the world above me
Standing tall because I fought that you might be...
Oh look ye down now,
And tell me you still think of me
Honor my red blood, spilt that others might stand free.

Tell me that I did not give my all for you in vain
That brothers and sisters do not look upon my sacrifice
With hateful,
Or even worse,
Uncaring disdain.

Do not forget me when my valley’s hushed
And white with snow,
Grass growing green in the summer of my meadow
Help me see the peace I lived and died for grow.

Make my lonely grave richer,
Sweeter be...
Make this truly,
"The land of the free
And the home of the brave,"
I gave my life to save
That I might too, lie eternally,
Forever free...

Silencing Muslim moderates
If Dr. Zuhdi Jasser were a Christian - and he emphatically is not - we might deem him a saint. But Jasser is a Muslim. He believes in his religion as fervently as any Catholic bishop believes in his. Or any Muslim imam, for that matter. He is faithful to the Quran, which Jasser believes conveys a message of peace.

Because of his faith, and because of what he has done to act on his faith, Jasser has evolved into an extraordinary symbol of what true heroism means in the post-Sept. 11 world. He is a Muslim and an American. And he is a man of peace - a rare, bold iconoclast who is willing to speak out against people who, he believes, have stolen his faith for evil ends. So, is Zuhdi Jasser what you might call a "moderate" Muslim? If you do, then the Public Broadcasting Service has a problem with you.

On April 15, PBS, along with its Washington, D.C., affiliate, WETA, will begin airing an 11-part series of documentaries titled America at a Crossroads. It is described by PBS as "a major public television event . . . that explores the challenges confronting the post-9/11 world," and much of what it explores is the clash of Western values and those of fundamentalist Muslims. Until earlier this year, a part of that exploration was to include a segment on Muslims living in the West - in places like Copenhagen, Paris, Toronto and Phoenix - and their clashes with Muslim fundamentalists who often explicitly align themselves with violence and, sometimes, with terrorists.

The segment was titled, Islam vs. Islamists: Voices from the Muslim Center. By and large, the clashes it depicted involved people like Jasser condemning violence perpetrated in the name of Islam, and fundamentalist imams condemning the Jassers of the world as false Muslims. In some cases, the documentary showed fundamentalists talking candidly about shutting up the moderates in their midst. And, in one case involving a moderate Muslim politician in Denmark, it caught them talking about shutting him up permanently.

#1  Ah... our fearless media bravely standing up for the American publics' "right to know", for "freedom of the press" and "speaking truth to power". And let's not forget "comforting the afflicted and afflicting the comfortable".

Anyone mind if I go and have a quick vomit? I always feel nauseated when I think of how our press talks the talk... but never walks the walk.

#3  That academic, Dr. Aminah Beverly McCloud of DePaul University, screened a cut of Islam vs. Islamists for a group of Nation of Islam leaders - a rather serious breach of journalism protocol, considering that the Nation of Islam was a major part of Burke's Islam vs. Islamists investigation.

A curious and highly selective breach of ethics.
