Today's Idiot
Police save thieves from sticky escape route

BERLIN (Reuters) - Two thieves on the run in Germany made light work for their pursuers when they tried to flee across a drained pond and got stuck so fast in mud they had to be helped out by police. "They probably thought the pond looked dry and that it would be a handy shortcut," a spokesman for police in the eastern city of Chemnitz said Wednesday. "But they got totally stuck."

Having released the men from the sludge, police arrested the pair, both Poles in their twenties. The two had earlier given officers the slip after being caught breaking into a car.

Dad kills wife and gets parking lot therapy from sons

Man on edge of death accused of killing wife

A 62-year-old Fremont man was clinging to thoroughly undeserved life Wednesday, a day after he killed his wife, shot and wounded his mother-in-law and then was beaten not nearly close enough to death by his two righteously angered adult sons, police said. Wazir Rahim, arrested on suspicion of murder, remained in the hospital, breathing with the help of a ventilator. He was being treated for some major smacks upside his head injuries suffered Tuesday afternoon, detective Bill Veteran said. Authorities identified 46-year-old Zarghona Rahim as the victim of the city's fifth slaying this year. Police did not identify her 82-year-old mother or the couple's sons, who were applauded for detaining the unconscious suspect and were not arrested.

After speaking to the mother-in-law, police determined Rahim shot his wife in the head during an argument at their home on the 4200 block of Othello Drive, Veteran said. When the mother-in-law heard the commotion, she went to the kitchen and was shot in the leg, Veteran said. The courageous Rahim then allegedly beat her as she tried to escape. Her injuries are not considered life-threatening. The woman staggered to a neighbor's home and phoned her grandson, Veteran said. The grandson called his brother, and the two allegedly went to their parents' home and attacked the problem of immobilizing their father until police could arrive to arrest him.

-Short Attention Span Theater-
Zambonis Rampage Through Boise
I havn't see this posted, so...
Two employees of the city's ice skating rink have been fired for making a midnight fast-food run in a pair of Zambonis. An anonymous tipster reported seeing the two big ice-resurfacing machines chug through a Burger King drive-through and return to the rink around 12:30 a.m. on Nov. 10. The squat, rubber-tired vehicles, which have a top speed of about 5 mph, drove 1 1/2 miles in all.
Have it your way... very very slowly.
The Zamboni operators, both temporary city employees whose names and ages were not released by Parks and Recreation Department, had to negotiate at least one intersection with a traffic light on their late-night creep from Idaho Ice World.
And what if the crosswalk had been crowded with baby ducks? Oh, the potential horror.
"They were fired immediately," said Parks Department Director Jim Hall. "We're pretty sure it was just the one time. When we interviewed them, they didn't seem to be too concerned about it. I don't think they understood the seriousness of it."
d00d. I've always wanted to give one a spin, heh.
Hall said neither the $75,000 Zambonis nor their $10,000 blades appeared damaged, but the city could charge the employees with operating an unlicensed motor vehicle on a public street.
Wymyns and Chilluns, home asleep in their beds, were hardest hit.

BTW, Zamboni, inventor of the vehicle, was awarded an honorary degree some years ago by engineering school/Div 1 hockey power Clarkson University.

Africa Subsaharan
S Africa: 300+ cases of extensively drug-resistant TB
More than 300 cases of extensively drug-resistant tuberculosis have been confirmed across South Africa this year, the national health department said Thursday. The TB strain — called XDR-TB — is resistant to the main, first-line TB drugs and to three or more of the six second-line drugs, according to the World Health Organization.

The patients "are in the hospitals, they are on treatment," said Dr. Lindiwe Mvusi, head of the health department's TB program, according to the South African Press Association. Some patients have died, Mvusi said, but could not say how many.

The health department has recorded 263 cases in KwaZulu-Natal, including 53 diagnosed earlier this year when the strain was first identified. Fifty-two of those 53 initial patients have died. Several more patients have tested positive for the strain in other regions, Mvusi said, putting the total number of cases at 303.

#2  Good, may reduce their numbers. Stop all entrants from this cesspool into US, that's all I care about.
Posted by: SpecOp35 || 11/24/2006 13:58 Comments || Top||

#3  Nope, that's not going to work. We live in a global world. XDR-TB is going to make its appearance in the western world -- already has in Eastern Europe. Just a matter of time.

I may have to brush up my understanding of thoracoplasties.
Posted by: Steve White || 11/24/2006 14:52 Comments || Top||

#4  Agreed. I've a feeling this is gonna spread, not just through Africa, but into Asia.

And for SpecOp35: it takes just one. Could come from Africa, but more likely India, Pakistan, Singapore, Dubai, Canada. Tell me how that's gonna get blocked, genius.

#5  The patients "are in the hospitals, they are on treatment,"

Until they feel a bit better, then they skip the rest of their antibiotic treatment, if they are even offered the remainder, and they head back home to give it to everybody else they love. They don't do it out of malice, they do it out of ignorance. Sort of like farm animals are pumped full of antibiotics in western countries. At least the cows are smart enough that they don't get up and leave in the middle though. :-)

The only solution I can think of is to make treatment available only in western-run hospitals, and admission is a one-way ticket. Until the doctors are done with the patients, and not the other way around, nobody goes out the door vertically. No bribery, no nothing. Take a DNA-match child as collateral if you need to.

No, I don't have a clue who's going to pay for this.

Well it must be just past North Head on the ocean side then!!

Amazing to think that in the war, when the midget subs fired on Bondi, that million-dollar real estate could be bought for a buck or two as the terrified residents fled for the hills and sold out. Wish I coulda bought some then but my dad was just a boy.

New Zealand boosts security force in Tonga
NEW Zealand is to send a further 20 police to Tonga, the Government announced today, in the second boost to security forces since Tonga called for assistance a week ago.

Police Minister Annette King said the latest deployment would bring the number of New Zealand police in Tonga to 45 and would provide more support to the Tonga force.

"The situation in Nuku'alofa is calm and good progress is being made by Tonga police, with support from New Zealand and Australian police, on crime scene investigation and the building of cases against suspects,'' she said.

About 150 New Zealand and Australian military and police landed in Tonga last Saturday.

They were tasked with securing the airport, allowing international flights to resume on Monday, four days after pro-democracy youths burned and looted their way through the commercial centre.

About 80 per cent of the tiny Pacific kingdom's business heart was wiped out in the rampage, eight people died and more than 100 people have since been arrested.

Damage is estimated at more than $US100 million ($A129.53 million).

New Zealand and Australia announced a further 38 police were sent midweek and Ms King said the additional police "together with the situation in Nuku'alofa continuing to improve, will facilitate the return of New Zealand military personnel''.

City bombing case reopened
SOUTH Australian police have reopened the investigation into the 1994 bombing of the National Crime Authority (NCA) office in Adelaide, following a request from the widow of the policeman killed in the incident.

Detectives will inquire into every aspect of the unsolved bombing which claimed the life of policeman, Detective Sergeant Geoffrey Bowen, and seriously injured a lawyer, Peter Wallis.

Det Sgt Bowen died when he opened a parcel bomb delivered to the NCA office in Waymouth Street in the city.
