Video: Police action against drug dealers in Rio de Janeiro.
Brazil is a peace, however, this video makes lots of Iraq look calm, What does peace look like in the 3rd world? Would any politicians of either party be interested in discussing that?

#2  I kept thinking 'hope the bad guys don't make a phone call or bad guy locals respond the the gunshots and come up behind the police.' After they put the wounded into the trunk and took off, hanging out the windows and covering the intersection I thought that maybe something like that had happened before.

Boy, 12, Kills Man Who Attacked His Mom
A 12-year-old boy fatally slashed a man who was attacking his mother at the boarding house where they lived, authorities said. Salomon Noubissie, 64, died at a hospital after he was slashed across the neck Monday night in the home in the Landover area.

Cpl. Diane Richardson, a spokeswoman for Prince George's County police, said Wednesday that authorities hadn't decided whether the boy would be charged with anything. They were reviewing the case with the state's attorney's office.

The boy said he had been playing a video game Monday night when he heard his mother, Cheryl Stamp, scream. He found her on the kitchen floor, straddled by a fellow resident who was choking her.

"I kept saying, 'Stop! Stop! Stop!'" the boy told The Washington Post, which published his account without giving his name. "But he just ignored me. He didn't stop. He just kept hurting her."

The boy said he took a knife and swung at the man. Police say they found Noubissie with a knife wound to the upper body.
Attaboy, kid.
Stamp said she didn't fully realize at first what her son had done. "He didn't say anything," she said. "But I knew when I looked in his eyes. I said, 'Oh, Lord.'"

Rarely is a 12-year-old implicated in a homicide, and even less often does a child that age kill someone to protect his mother. "In Maryland, there can be a legitimate defense of third parties in the event of a violent attack," State's Attorney Glenn F. Ivey told the newspaper. "That is a possibility in this case."
Even in Maryland ...
Stamp said she and Noubissie, a Cameroonian immigrant, had moved into the boarding house within days of each other three months ago and had become friends. Stamp said Noubissie had told her he was studying to be a psychiatrist.

But on Monday night, she said, he was acting differently. He started to yell at her and grab her hair. "He threw me down and started choking me. I think that's when my son came in. ... He protected me," she said.

Noubissie was combative with officers when they arrived, even as he was bleeding heavily, she said.

The boy said he was not happy with what happened but felt he had no choice. "I told God that I had stabbed him because he was killing my mother. I know he understands, and I think he will keep us safe now."
Kid is going to need help and counseling, but he did the right thing.

#1  No, no, no. The son should have retreated, called 911, waited for the police to arrive. The police should have talked calmly to Noubissie, found out what his issues were, seen if there was anything they could do to help him with his problems, and then asked the woman if she had done anything to provoke him.
/liberal bs viewpoint.
Of course, the mother would probably be dead by then, but at least the boy would not have been forced to kill the guy.

#2  Good Job kid.

Stamp said Noubissie had told her he was studying to be a psychiatrist.

Psychiatrist, heal thyself!

The boy said he was not happy with what happened but felt he had no choice. "I told God that I had stabbed him because he was killing my mother. I know he understands, and I think he will keep us safe now."
Sounds to me like he has a pretty good handle on it, especially for a 12 year old - much more mature than if someone attacked my family. I love to cook and have a collection of utinsils which wouuld work in a pinch, my home defense kit includes a knife with a little more ummph. For those who have not had at at least a little martial training, even if you get the 911 out and with a 5 minute response time, 5 minutes is a looong time to scrap and a lot can happen.

La. Congressman's Brother Indicted
The eldest brother and political strategist of indicted U.S. Rep. William Jefferson has been charged with giving payoffs to a school-board president - a bribery case apparently unrelated to the one against the congressman. In a federal indictment handed up Wednesday, Mose Jefferson is accused of giving $140,000 to help secure about $14 million in contracts to bring a computer-based teaching system to Orleans Parish schools. He is charged with bribery, money laundering and obstruction of justice.

Is the Smithsonian smarter than a fifth grader?
AoS at 10:15 CDT: category fixed. Virtually everything in SAST, Lurid Crime Tales, and Signs and Portents should be in the 'local' category. Thx.
Millions of people have paraded past the Tower of Time exhibit at the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History in Washington. But eleven-year-old Kenton Stufflebeam of Allegan, Michigan, is the first visitor to have caught a particular mistake there.

He and his family went to the museum during winter break. Kenton noticed that the Tower of Time, which involves prehistoric time, referred to the "Precambrian Era." The Alamo Elementary School fifth-grader knew that its proper name was just the "Precambrian," with out the "era." He left a note with his concern. Museum officials wrote Kenton back last week, telling him he was right.

The boy notes that they misspelled his last name and hometown.

We're still not doing background investigations on visa applicants
It's bizarre that in this post-2001 Sep. 11 time, we're still not conducting nor charging for proper background investigations of visa applicants. Such investigations can run over $35K in the USA, and much more to investigate those over-seas. If we're charging less than that for a visa, then Milton Friedman was certainly correct when he said in 2002 that these visas are a huge subsidy to executives.
Posted by: Gritch Spoter6918 || 04/03/2008 00:00 || Comments || Link || [4 views] Top|| File under:

#1  Background checks are easy. If you come from an Islamic nation the answer is no, no visa, no way, when the war is over we'll think about it. If you come from a non-Islamic country but have an Islamic clothes or name, same story.

That should make it easier to investigate the other applicants.
