A kaleidoscope of versions and grains of truth. What Western media write about the downed Il-76
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.
by Gregor Spitzen

[REGNUM] A monstrous incident occurred in the sky over Belgorod on the morning of January 24. An Il-76 military transport aircraft of the Russian Air Force with 65 Ukrainian prisoners on board intended for the exchange came under fire from a Ukrainian air defense complex secretly deployed to the border with the Belgorod region. This attack will go down in the annals of military intelligence around the world as the apotheosis of professional incompetence and incompetence.

In turn, the clumsy handling of the crisis case by the Ukrainian military and civilian authorities became another warning of how dangerous it is to entrust responsible work to outright amateurs.

The situation with the death of the Russian transport worker looks quite obvious, given that the Ukrainian side was the first to rush to report through the national media about the “successful” defeat of the target.

Nevertheless, great interest was aroused by how the media of countries friendly to the Kyiv regime reacted to the tragedy. Looking ahead, let’s say that they traditionally did not disappoint, offering their own readers a whole kaleidoscope of various versions.

GERMANY
The smartest thing to do was the German newspaper Handelsblatt, which remains one of the few high-quality German publications and is still trying to adhere to at least some civilized framework in relation to Russia.

The Düsseldorf editorial office simply reprinted the release of the German news agency Deutsche Presse Agentur (DPA), thus washing its hands. The audience was informed about the situation, but the journalists of Germany’s main business publication wisely did not want to delve into a matter that was frankly risky for their own reputation.

By the way, the DPA ’s release turned out to be as vague as possible and obscured the responsibility of the Ukrainian side, although overall it was quite complete from a factual point of view. Of course, there were traditional phrases such as the fact that the tragedy became another sad page “ in Russia’s 700-day aggressive war against Ukraine” and “it is impossible to independently confirm what or who the downed plane was transporting.”

However, the DPA honestly spoke about the initial publication of the Ukrayinska Pravda newspaper, which spoke of the successful “ defeat of an aircraft transporting Russian missiles to the S-300 air defense system.”

However, grains of truth, also according to the tradition practiced for some time in the German media, turned out to be seasoned with a real assortment of manipulative and propaganda passages.

Like reminders that “during the fighting in July 2014, pro-Russian militants shot down a suspected Ukrainian fighter jet over eastern Ukraine. In fact, a civilian plane from Malaysia was shot down, killing 298 of its passengers.”

Another German publication, Die Welt, decided to invite “military experts” like Nico Lange to the studio. He hastened to declare that “the range of Ukraine’s air defense missile systems is insufficient to shoot down targets at such a distance from the state border. At the same time, it is unlikely that such valuable systems as IRIS-T or Patriot could be transferred directly to the line of combat contact.”

Another military expert, Ralph D. Thiele, in a video broadcast on Die Welt, immediately began to throw shade on the fence, saying that “at the present time nothing can be said for sure, and the missile that shot down the Il-76 could have been either Ukrainian or Russian.”

Simonyan published a list of prisoners of war who died in the Il-76 crash
The Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung newspaper went even further, transparently hinting to readers that the plane crash could have been a deliberate provocation by the Russian side.

The publication quoted a message from the Military Intelligence Service of Ukraine, according to which “the Main Intelligence Directorate of Ukraine does not have sufficient information about who was on board the plane,” and “it cannot be ruled out that the incident was a planned action by Russia with the aim of destabilizing Ukrainian society. ”

The newspaper Die Zeit, among other things, compared the incident with the murder of more than 50 Ukrainian prisoners of war at the detention center in Yelenovka in the Donetsk region. Recalling that, according to the Ukrainian side, “Ukrainian prisoners were killed by Russian occupiers.” And although Russia says there was a missile attack from Ukraine, a UN mission to investigate an alleged war crime is still being denied entry by Russian occupation authorities.”

According to Die Zeit, “information about a weapon system allegedly used to shoot down a transport plane also resembles Yelenovka. There, the Russian authorities also very early started talking about an attack using the American HIMARS launcher, which at that time had only just been delivered to Ukraine. Ukraine accuses Russia of deliberately trying to prevent Western arms supplies by disinformation about their use.”

GREAT BRITAIN
The Guardian gave perhaps the most objective and impartial picture of the incident presented in Western media, refraining from assessments that could be interpreted as an expression of sympathy for one of the parties.

But the most authoritative British publication The Times could not resist quoting such an odious adviser to the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine Anton Gerashchenko.

He said that "Moscow's claims that the plane was carrying Ukrainian prisoners of war and not missiles were an attempt by the Russian Ministry of Defense to 'save face.' “[Russia] is actively conducting informational special operations against Ukraine aimed at destabilizing Ukrainian society.”

Next, The Times adds the well-known theses that Russia is carrying out strikes with modified S-300 missiles. “At least 18 people were killed across Ukraine, most of them in Kharkiv, during Russian strikes on Tuesday. Belgorod has also been frequently targeted by Ukrainian missile attacks in recent months. Last month, a strike in the city center killed 25 people."

Such comparisons are made so that the reader realizes that the situation is “not as clear-cut” as it might seem at first glance, and the Russians are capable of any treachery.

USA
The New York Times also begins by saying that "Moscow's claims that Ukraine shot down a military transport plane carrying Ukrainian prisoners cannot be independently verified."

However, the publication also quotes a statement from the Ukrainian General Staff: “Ukraine has the right to strike Russian military transport aircraft in the border region.”

However, The New York Times then cites a statement from the Ukrainian military command, which does not deny the fact that the plane was shot down. And it says that “The Armed Forces of Ukraine will continue to take measures to destroy delivery vehicles and control airspace to eliminate the terrorist threat.”

Also worthy of attention is the newspaper’s statement by Olga Reshetilova, coordinator of the Media Initiative for Human Rights group, which is investigating possible “war crimes” of Russia against prisoners of war. She called for an investigation into the crash, but noted that those efforts would be “complicated by the fact that the crime occurred on the territory” of Russia.

The New York Times concludes its ambivalent report with the following statement: “With prospects for progress on the ground unclear, Ukraine has turned to long-range drone strikes and sabotage operations inside Russia, targeting military and fuel infrastructure. Tactics include sabotage and special forces raids near the border, including in the Belgorod region."

Such statements can be interpreted as an assumption that the catastrophe that occurred was the work of Ukraine.

Trepova gets 27 years in prison in the case of a terrorist attack
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.
[Regnum] The court found Daria Trepova (a person included by Rosfinmonitoring in the list of terrorists and extremists) guilty of committing a terrorist attack in St. Petersburg, it follows from the court decision.

Trepova received 27 years in a general regime colony. Trepova's accomplice was sentenced to 1 year and 9 months in prison for harboring her.

At the same time, the prosecutor requested 28 years in prison for Trepova. The state prosecution also asked for a fine of 800 thousand rubles.

Forensic experts declared the defendant sane. So, according to the polygraph data dated November 14, 2023, Trepova knew what exactly was in the figurine, which she gave to the journalist Tatarsky.

During interrogation on January 16, Trepova said that she carried out orders from Ukrainian curators in the hope of leaving for the republic.

The terrorist attack occurred on April 2, 2023 in a cafe on Universitetskaya Embankment in St. Petersburg. Tatarsky’s creative evening “There is such a profession - military correspondent” took place there. Trepova was one of the guests of the event. She presented the military correspondent with a figurine as a gift, which, as it later turned out, contained explosives. After this there was an explosion. During the terrorist attack, Tatarsky was killed and 40 more people were injured.

Trepova hid in the apartment of her friend Dmitry Kasintsev. However, the morning after the terrorist attack, April 3, he tried to escape. Later it became known that the state prosecution requested 1 year and 10 months of imprisonment in a general regime correctional colony for him.

The Investigative Committee opened a criminal case of murder, which was reclassified as a case of terrorism, and Trepova was arrested.

Relatives of captured Ukrainian Armed Forces soldiers asked not to return them to Ukraine
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.

I don't blame them.

[Regnum] Relatives of captured Ukrainian Armed Forces fighters asked the Russian side not to return them to Ukraine, Human Rights Commissioner for the Sverdlovsk Region Tatyana Merzlyakova said on January 25. According to her, the parents of two prisoners live in the region.

Merzlyakova spoke about this as part of a commentary on the crash of a Russian Il-76 with captured Ukrainians on board, shot down by the Ukrainian Armed Forces themselves from the territory of the Kharkov region.

“Parents are crying and asking to stay here and not exchange them. These Ukrainian servicemen were not on the crashed plane,” Ekaterinburg Online quoted her as saying.

Merzlyakova noted that the region was eagerly awaiting the exchange of prisoners, which never took place due to the terrorist attack by the Ukrainian Armed Forces. In her opinion, exchanges will resume if a third party appears that takes on the function of negotiations.

As Regnum reported, on January 24, the Ukrainian Armed Forces shot down a military transport aircraft of the Russian Ministry of Defense Il-76 with 65 Ukrainian prisoners, who were transported for transfer to the Ukrainian side, and a Russian crew of six people from an anti-aircraft missile system. No one survived. The exchange was planned to take place the same day at the Kolotilovka checkpoint on the Russian-Ukrainian border.

The Ministry of Defense stated that the Ukrainian leadership knew very well that the transportation of captured Ukrainian Armed Forces fighters was carried out by Russian military transport aircraft, and yet the Kiev regime took such a step as to accuse Russia of destroying the Ukrainian military. Press Secretary of the Russian President Dmitry Peskov said that it is necessary to seek an international investigation not only of this, but also of all the crimes of the Kiev regime committed by it since 2014.

The governor of the Belgorod region, Vyacheslav Gladkov, called the pilots of the downed Il-76 heroes, since at the cost of their own lives they took the plane away from the populated area. The head of the region emphasized that the aircraft did not fall within the village of Yablonovo thanks to the professional and dedicated actions of the crew and expressed condolences to the families of the Russian military personnel who died in the incident.

Investigative Committee opened a case of terrorism after the crash of an Il-76 in the Belgorod region
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.
[Regnum] The crash of an Il-76, which was shot down by the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU), is being investigated under the article “terrorism,” the Investigative Committee reported on January 25.

“A criminal case has been initiated based on this fact on the grounds of a crime under Art. 205 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (terrorist act),” the message says.

The Investigative Committee added that the first results of the investigation indicate that the plane was attacked by an anti-aircraft missile from the territory of Ukraine. During the inspection of the scene, investigators found flight recorders, which were sent for decoding, and also seized a fragment of the fuselage and other material evidence for examination.

Earlier, on January 25, it was reported that specialists working at the Il-76 crash site discovered elements that could be missile fragments. In addition, a representative in the emergency services stated that missile damaging elements and hundreds of entry holes were found in the skin of the Il-76.

The fact that the Il-76 military transport plane crashed became known on January 24. The incident occurred in the Korochansky district in the Belgorod region. There were 65 Ukrainian prisoners of war on board who were being transported for exchange. In addition, there were six crew members on the plane, military police officers. Everyone died.

The Russian Ministry of Defense then stated that the radar equipment of the Aerospace Forces recorded the launch of two Ukrainian missiles at the downed Il-76. The plane was shot down by the Ukrainian Armed Forces from the territory of the Kharkov region.

In a statement, the Russian Foreign Ministry called the Ukrainian Armed Forces’ attack on the Il-76 a conscious and deliberate attack. Department representative Maria Zakharova compared the Kiev regime’s terrorist attack against an Il-76 plane carrying Ukrainian prisoners of war with American militants in which “our own people die in a bloody massacre.”

Explosions and fires at two substations in Russia's Pacific port city of Vladivostok leave hundreds of homes without power
[Yahoo] Explosions and fires have been reported simultaneously at the Novozhilov and Tykhaya Bay substations in the major Russian Pacific port city of Vladivostok, the Russian telegram channel ASTRA wrote on Jan. 23.

More than 250 houses in Tykhaya Bay are without power, according to local media reports.

The Far Eastern Distribution Network Company said that two transformers at the Borisenko district’s Zamiska substation were out of service at around 7:00 pm local time (11:00 a.m. EET). A fire was detected in a closed switchgear, although the transformers did not catch fire.

This report follows another recent incident at an oil terminal in Ust-Luga near St. Petersburg, where precision strikes by Ukrainian drones ignited a huge blaze that continued to rage into the morning of Jan. 21, forcing Russian authorities to evacuate personnel from the terminal of Novatek, Russia's largest independent natural gas producer.

Knowledgeable sources told NV that the attack on the terminal was a special operation carried out by Ukraine’s SBU security service. This facility, in particular, processes fuel for the Russian military.

The same source said that the Ust-Luga Oil terminal is an important facility for the Russians and damage to the terminal will cause not only economic damage to the aggressor, depriving the Kremlin of the opportunity to earn money to wage war in Ukraine, but will also significantly complicate Russian military logistics.

Ukrainian drones targeted an oil depot in Russia’s Leningrad Oblast in a special operation by the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Defense Ministry (HUR) on the night of Jan. 18.

Malaysian and ex-Wagner mercenaries spotted in occupied territories - National Resistance Center
[Yahoo] Malaysian mercenaries and former Wagner private military company (PMC) fighters have been spotted in the occupied territories of Donetsk Oblast, the National Resistance Center (NRC) reported on Jan. 24, noting that they are currently at a training ground.

Cubans, Nepalese, Belarusians, Serbians and representatives of other countries where mercenary activities are formally prohibited have also been repeatedly spotted in the Russian armed forces.

Anyone fighting in the Russian army against Ukraine is considered a military target, the NRC reminded, calling on residents of the occupied territories to report information about the enemy and its gathering sites.

Russia is actively recruiting Cuban citizens to fight in the war on Ukraine, Reuters reported on Sept. 30. Moscow is paying them a signing bonus of $2,040 (200,000 rubles) – more than 100 times Cuba’s average monthly salary of $17 (4,209 pesos). At least 119 Cubans have already gone to fight in Ukraine.

Cuban authorities recently arrested 17 people on charges related to a ring of human traffickers that allegedly lured young Cuban men to fight in Ukraine, Reuters reported on Sept. 8, adding that Cubawas working to "neutralize and dismantle" the network, which it said operated both on Cuban and Russian soil.

Nepal has stopped issuing work permits to Russia and Ukraine after several of its citizens were killed in the war, Reuters reported on Jan. 5. Nepal has asked Moscow not to recruit its citizens into the Russian army, to immediately send all Nepalese soldiers back to their country, and to pay compensation to the families of those killed.

Russia tries to recruit foreigners for the war against Ukraine to avoid announcing a new mobilization before the presidential elections scheduled for 2024, reported U.K. intelligence on Sep. 3.

Russia recruits migrants from Central Asia to participate in combat operations in Ukraine, promising them expedited citizenship and a monthly salary of up to $4,160.

Russia planned to recruit an additional 400,000 contract soldiers after its offensive in Ukraine failed. This comes in the wake of significant losses, reported Bloomberg.

Kremlin has also begun to "rehabilitate" some elements of Wagner's PMC after the militants' failed rebellion in

The mercenaries were issued official documents identifying them as combat veterans. Wagner PMC has also been incorporated into the command structure of the Russian Guard.

All units have been reformatted. Fighters who sign a contract with the Russian Defense Ministry or Rosgvardia now serve in the army or other "private military companies,” a representative of the Ukrainian Main Intelligence Directorate (HUR), Vadym Skibitsky, has said.

UN received a request from Russia to provide it with a list of those killed in Bucha
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.
[Regnum] Russia's request for a list of those killed in Bucha in the spring of 2022 was received by the United Nations (UN). This was stated on January 25 by the official representative of the Secretary General of the world organization, Stephane Dujarric, during a briefing, TASS reports.

“We received this request,” Dujarric said.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov indicated at a meeting of the UN Security Council on January 22 that the world organization has not yet provided a list of those killed in Bucha, despite repeated requests from the Russian side.

Earlier, IA Regnum reported that, as Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said in December 2023, the refusal of relevant international organizations to provide Russia with a list of those killed in Bucha suggests that it was a staging carried out by Ukraine at the direction of Great Britain and the United States.

In June 2023, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov doubted that the West was conducting an investigation into the incident in Bucha. He noted that he constantly reminds UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres of the importance of clarifying the situation, but receives no response.

Until the end of March 2022, the city of Bucha, located near Kiev, was under the control of the Russian military. After their withdrawal, Ukrainian and Western media published photos and videos taken in Bucha, which allegedly showed numerous corpses of civilians. Kyiv accused Moscow of a war crime.

In April 2022, the Chairman of the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation, Alexander Bastrykin, announced the initiation of a criminal case after the Ukrainian provocation in the city of Bucha under the article on the public dissemination of deliberately false information about the use of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation.
