Bomb injures two defense volunteers in southern Thailand
Two defense volunteers were injured, one of them seriously, by a bomb blast in Rangae district of Narathiwat province on Monday afternoon.

Four defense volunteers were riding on two motorcycles to provide security for a village game. As they were passing a rubber plantation, a bomb buried in the road was set off by terrorists militants hiding nearby. The explosion injured two volunteers, one seriously.

The terrorists militants opened fire at the volunteers after setting off the bomb. They fled after a brief exchange of gunfire.

5 alleged terrorists acquitted

Five alleged members of the Barisan Revolusi Nasional (BRN) Coordinate, a terrorist separatist group, have been acquitted of charges of murder and terrorist separatist activities.

Prosecutors said that the five - Mustopa Jehya, Ilyas Manwang, Usman Pasi, Yulai Sopon-ae and Ma-asi Boonpon - between November - December 2004 had conducted terrorist activities in various forms in Pattani province with an intent to establish an autonomous state called Pattani State or Pattani Darussalam. The five were alleged to be members of the BRN Coordinate, a terrorist separatist group.
Be sure to watch for some or all of these five to make future appearances here at Rantburg.

Al-Qaeda 'will free British hostage' if Abu Qatada can go where he wants
Rolled over to Tuesday. AoS.
Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb, an affilate of the terrorist organisation, have offered to free a British-South African hostage if Abu Qatada, the radical cleric, is allowed to choose a country for his extradition, according to the US monitoring service SITE.

AQIM also threatened that Britain would "open the door of evil" unto its country and people should it send the imam back to his native Jordan where he faces jail, the report said.

The group which is Al-Qaeda's North African franchise - has been holding Stephen Malcolm and two other western men hostage since abducting them last November in the northern Mali desert city of Timbuktu.

Britain has been trying to deport Abu Qatada for more than six years, arguing he is a threat to national security, to Jordan, where the cleric was convicted in 1998 in absentia of involvement in terror attacks. But his removal has in the past been blocked by the European Court of Human Rights, which cited the risk that evidence obtained from torture would be used against him on his return to Jordan.

The court is now considering the latest appeal by the cleric.

Olympic defence missiles 'don't work in bad weather'
Rolled over to Tuesday. AoS.
Six sites, including two residential complexes, are being tested as launch pads for missile systems capable of thwarting any airborne terror attack.

Starstreak and Rapier missile systems - which have a range of around 4 miles - would be deployed as a "last resort" to shoot down any low flying aircraft intending a 9/11 style suicide mission at one of the Olympic venues.

Defence sources claim radar would identify rogue aircraft and the missiles would be deployed long before they reached built up areas.

But experts have claimed that the systems are useless in poor weather as they rely on the operator being able to see the target.

Nick Brown, editor in chief of IHS Jane's International Defence Review said: "The system's weakness is that the missiles are laser-guided, steered onto their target by the soldier keeping his sight on an aircraft. So if the soldier can't see an aircraft, they can't hit it.

Arabia
Allegedly killed in Yemen al-Qaeda's bomb maker alive
Ibrahim Hassan al-Asiri, a Saudi national who according to the American Intelligence services was al-Qaeda's official bomb makers would have reappear after the Pentagon announced his death last September 30 following an air strike against the group. Declared dead at the time alongside Anwar al-Awlaki, the group's leader, US intelligence officials fear that the man used his unexpected "death" to go further underground, plotting further attacks against American interests.

Al-Asiri is believed to have engineered the bomb which almost claimed Prince Mohammad bin Nayef, the Saudi deputy Interior Minister's life in 2009 when Ibrahim's brother blew himself up.

The FBI has a fingerprint and forensic evidence linking al-Asiri to one of the explosive devices used in attempted attacks on the U.S. It's not clear who provided the FBI with the original fingerprint used to match the one lifted from the underwear bomb. But it probably came from Saudi Arabia, where al-Asiri and his brother were arrested for their involvement in an Al-Qaeda-affiliated terrorist cell. They were released and later fled to Yemen in 2006.

Several counterterrorism officials in Yemen are on the alert as Ossama bin Laden's death anniversary is approaching, fearing that the Islamic militants would want to make a public display. Amidst renewed tensions in Yemen in between Ansar al-Sharia, an offshoot of al-Qaeda and the armed forces, as the two battle for control of Abyan, a southern province, several security analysts encourage caution.

"However, we assess that AQ's affiliates and allies remain intent on conducting attacks on the homeland, possibly to avenge the death of bin Laden, but not necessarily tied to the anniversary," Carney said, referring to Al-Qaeda.

US deploys F-22 fighter jets to UAE: officials
The United States has deployed sophisticated F-22 fighter jets to the United Arab Emirates amid deepening tensions between Iran and its pro-US neighbors, officials said Monday.

The US officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, would not say how many F-22s would be sent to the Al-Dhafra air base in the United Arab Emirates. Military officers tend to avoid publicly discussing details of operations at the US air base.

An Air Force spokeswoman confirmed that a number of F-22 Raptors, the most advanced fighter in the US fleet, would be deployed to the region without mentioning the base or Iran.

"The United States Air Force has deployed F-22s to Southwest Asia. Such deployments strengthen military-to-military relationships, promote sovereign and regional security, improve combined tactical air operations, and enhance interoperability of forces, equipment and procedures," said Major Mary Danner-Jones.

Pentagon spokesman Captain John Kirby told reporters the move "was a very normal deployment" in keeping with an adjustment of US forces in the region following the withdrawal of American troops from Iraq.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Iranian Students Urge OIC to Show Swift Reaction to Quran Burning in US
Iranian students strongly condemned desecration of the Muslims' Holy Book by a US pastor, and called on the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to show decisive reaction to the provocative move.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, students of the University of Quranic Sciences and Studies said that the burning of copies of the Holy Quran by US pastor Terry Joins in the state of Florida was a "plot hatched by leaders of the US and the occupying Zionist regime (of Israel)".

They said that the sacrilege of the Holy Quran was a move aimed at assessing the reaction of the Muslim world.

The statement further called on the OIC and the Iranian foreign ministry to react strongly and decisively to Jones' provocative move in a bid to stop further desecration of Islamic sanctities by others.

On Sunday, Iran condemned the Quran burning by the US pastor as an "insulting and provocative" act, and urged the United States to apologize to the Muslim World.

The Pentagon had asked Jones to refrain from burning the Qurans out of concern for the safety of NATO forces in Afghanistan.

Quran burning and sacrilege of Islamic values has become a commonplace move by Americans in recent years, while the opposite has never happened and Muslims have never desecrated values of Judaism, Christianity and other divine religions.
Other than a little bombing and mass killing in churches, in say Egypt and Nigeria etc, the followers of the Religion of Pieces are as pure as the driven snow.

'Egyptians thwart Iranian plot to kill Saudi envoy'
Saudi official says Egypt arrested 3 Iranians plotting to kill envoy in Cairo 3 months ago; Iran denies allegations.
Egyptian security forces thwarted an Iranian plot to assassinate Saudi Arabia's ambassador to Cairo several months ago, AFP reported on Tuesday quoting a Saudi official.

According to the report, the legal adviser of the kingdom's embassy, Sami Jamal, told Al-Hayat that Egypt had "arrested three Iranians planning to assassinate the ambassador, Ahmed Kattan."

Jamal added that "Egyptian authorities informed concerned parties at the Saudi foreign ministry of the details of the plot, but the Saudi side opted to keep silent on the matter."

Narcissistic personality disorder is a mental disorder in which people have an inflated sense of their own importance and a deep need for admiration. Those with narcissistic personality disorder believe that they're superior to others and have little regard for other people's feelings. But behind this mask of ultra-confidence lies a fragile self-esteem, vulnerable to the slightest criticism.

-Lurid Crime Tales-
Anguish of Edwards’ pal wife
Tawdry tale goes a step further. Cheri Young, the wife of Andrew Young, the aide to John Edwards, the Breck Boy who for some unknown reason preferred Rielle Hunter to his own family, weeps on the witness stand about how Rielle and Breck Boy destroyed her life and that of her family.

Feh.

No one put a gun to her head. No one forced her to defend John Edwards. No one forced her to take Rielle into her home. The article claims it was out of loyalty to Edwards and his presidential campaign, but I wonder how much of Bunny Mellon's and Fred Baron's money stuck to the Young household.

I think they're all guilty and they all belong at the Greybar Hotel, just to teach all the other apparatchiks, nomenklatura and elites an object lesson.

#1  I'd be more forgiving. The Youngs got swept up in a narcissist's fantasy and lost their bearings. Mrs. Young said she was the sole dissenter, but went along with the scheme because she "didn't want the whole campaign to blow up and for it to be her fault." I find that totally credible. Resisting groupthink, alone, is damn near impossible.

Chris Christie's Islam Problem
A Quinnipiac poll in April showed Chris Christie the most popular potential Republican vice-presidential candidate, thanks to his budget cuts and standing up to government employee unions. But the governor of New Jersey has a problem, specifically an Islam problem, in the way of his possible ascent to higher office. We regret to report that, time and again, he has sided with Islamist forces against those safeguarding American security and civilization.

Some examples:

2008: When serving as U.S. attorney for New Jersey, Christie embraced and kissed Mohammed Qatanani, imam of the Islamic Center of Passaic County, and praised him as "a man of great goodwill." He did this after Qatanani had publicly ranted against Jews and in support of funding Hamas, a U.S. government–designated terror organization, and on the eve of his deportation hearing for hiding an Israeli conviction for membership in Hamas. In addition, Christie designated a top aide, Assistant U.S. Attorney Charles McKenna, to testify as a character witness for Qatanani.

2010: After Derek Fenton burned three pages of a Koran at a 9/11 memorial ceremony, his employer, New Jersey Transit, got Christie's approval to fire him. Christie vocally endorsed Fenton's termination, even though this meant protecting Islam at the expense of Fenton's constitutional right to free speech, declaring, "I don't have any problem with him being fired." The American Civil Liberties Union successfully represented Fenton to get his job back.

2011: Christie appointed an Islamist, Sohail Mohammed, to the New Jersey state superior court. Mohammed's record includes serving as general counsel to the American Muslim Union (which has stated that a "Zionist Commando Orchestrated The 9-11 Terrorist Attacks"), acting as spokesman for Muslim prisoners who went on a hunger strike due to being jailed during Ramadan, defending Palestinian Islamic Jihad operative Sami Al-Arian (whose indictment, Mohammed said, was "nothing but a witch-hunt"), and helping Qatanani's legal defense. Mohammed is not a lawyer for Islamists but one of them.

When members of New Jersey's Senate Judiciary Committee asked Mohammed appropriately tough questions about his enthusiasm for Islam's archaic law code, the Shari'a, Christie ridiculed the lawmakers: "Shari'a law has nothing to do with this [appointment of Mohammed] at all. It's crazy. It's crazy. … So, this Shari'a law business is crap. It's just crazy. And I'm tired of dealing with the crazies. I mean, you know, it's just unnecessary to be accusing this guy of things just because of his religious background." Delighted by this outburst, the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) thanked and applauded Christie.

2012: Revelations that the New York Police Department had conducted surveillance of Islamists in the New Jersey towns of Newark and New Brunswick prompted not gratitude but outrage from Christie, who termed the action arrogant and paranoid while mocking NYPD Commissioner Raymond Kelly as "all knowing, all seeing."

In short, Christie has hugged a terrorist organization member, abridged free-speech rights, scorned concern over Islamization, and opposed law enforcement counterterrorism efforts. Whenever an issue touching on Islam arises, Christie takes the Islamist side against those –the DHS, state senators, the NYPD, even the ACLU – who worry about lawful Islamism eroding the fabric of American life.

Egyptian presidential candidate: Camp David Accords are 'dead'
Amr Moussa, the leading Jerry Lewis lookalike candidate in Egypt's presidential race, called the Camp David peace accords "dead and buried."

Moussa said Sunday during a rally in southern Egypt that the document belongs "on the shelves of history," Haaretz reported.

He differentiated, however, between the accords and the peace treaty that was signed in 1979, a year after Camp David. The Camp David Accords called for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state as a goal.

"This agreement is dead and buried. There is an agreement between Israel and Egypt that we will honor as long as Israel honors it," Moussa reportedly said.

Moussa served as foreign minister under ousted President Hosni Mubarak for a decade.

Meanwhile, Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak called on Egypt to control the instability in the Sinai Peninsula in order to keep the peace between the two countries.

"We urge Egypt to contain the lawlessness in the Sinai Peninsula -- this is imperative in order to keep our two nations firmly on the path of peace," he said Monday during an address to the Foreign Press Association in Jerusalem.

Mobile app helps report unfair airport screeners

A Sikh advocacy group launched a free mobile application Monday that allows travelers to complain immediately to the government if they feel they've been treated unfairly by airport screeners.
How about if they witness someone being treated unfairly?
Launched at midnight by The Sikh Coalition, the FlyRights app had fielded two complaints by 10 a.m. EDT Monday.
That didn't take long.
The first complaint came from a woman who said she felt mistreated after she disclosed to a screener that she was carrying breast milk. A man who is Sikh filed the second complaint, saying he was subjected to extra security even though he had not set off any alarms. The woman's complaint was based on gender and the man's, religion, said coalition program director Amardeep Singh.

Singh said the Department of Homeland Security and Transportation Security Administration were notified of the app before its launch. The agencies agreed to allow the app to use the agencies' system for submitting the complaints.

TSA said in a statement that it does not profile passengers on the basis of race, ethnicity or religion and is continually working with communities, including The Sikh Coalition, "to help us understand unique passenger concerns." The agency said it supports "efforts to gather passenger feedback about the screening process."

The app, available for iPhone and Android phones, was conceived in response to complaints from Sikhs in the U.S, who since the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks are routinely subjected to additional inspection, Singh said. Some are made to remove their turbans, which Sikhs wear for religious reasons, Singh said.
They could make the process quicker if they had buttons for things like "Nun", "Severely Disabled", "Child", "Tin God", etc..
The app is intended for everyone who feels they are racially profiled or subjected to other unfair treatment. It is also intended to provide better data on how often such incidents occur.
They could also have a button for "I just witnessed a muslim sail through security with Crayon and an 'I love Osama' T-shirt"
In light of the shooting of Trayvon Martin, immigration laws in Alabama and Arizona, and the anniversary of the Rodney King trial "it has never been more readily apparent how the practice of racial profiling impacts all Americans," said Wade Henderson, president and CEO of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights. The conference helped launch the app.

After completing screening, a person can go to the app and click on the "report" button. The app will automatically fill in the person's name, phone number and email address. The app asks questions such as race and name of airport, as well as the basis of the complaint, such as religion or gender. It has "submit" and "share" buttons to post on social media that a complaint was filed. The app also contains information on rights of passengers and TSA procedures.
Does it also detail how it's OK to operate a jihadi website but not OK for the elderly to get on a plane without getting assaulted?
The Sikh Coalition gets hundreds of complaints of unfair treatment and profiling, Singh said. By contrast, he said, the Department of Homeland Security said in its last report to Congress on civil rights and civil liberties that 11 people in the U.S. submitted complaints in the first six month of 2011.

"My hope is that this app will exponentially increase the number of complaints filed with the TSA, flood the system so they get that this is a problem. For too long the Transportation Security Administration has been able to tell Congress this is not an issue, nobody's complaining," Singh said.

Passengers can ask to speak to supervisors or customer support managers at an airport, contact the TSA Contact Center, submit feedback through "Talk-to-TSA" online or file a civil rights complaint through its website, the agency said.

Prabhjit Singh, a motivational speaker, said he has been profiled 30 times, starting in Feb. 2007 when he was taking an early morning flight from Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport to Alabama. In that incident, he was told he had to go through a mandatory pat-down of his turban, even though he had not set off the detector. But after asking for information on the TSA policy, a supervisor told him he could not fly, he said.

"Out of those 30 incidents, I have not yet been able to take myself and write down all the information I needed to and been able to convey that to the Sikh Coalition. This app will allow me to do that," said Prabhjit Singh, who is not related to Amardeep Singh.
All Sikhs carry the surname Singh.
"When I sat down on that airplane, after that experience, I looked around at everybody else ... and I thought, they did not have to go through what I had to go through to get on this airplane," he said.
I guess the nun and the kid with CP didn't manage to make it on the plane. Consider yourself lucky, punk.

#1  A year or two ago a group of Orthodox Jewish men were escorted off a plane because they were dressed oddly and praying in Hebrew. Their response? In these troubled times it is understandable that people are touchy and suspicious, and they were happy to take the replacement flight they were offered after their innocence was confirmed. The story is somewhere in the Rantburg archives.

Five Mostly Peaceful Anarchists Charged With Trying to Blow Up Cleveland Bridge
Must just be a coincidence the radical left and OWS types have been planning chaos for May Day.

Five people described as anarchists were arrested Monday in a Cleveland-area park for trying to blow up a bridge, sources tell Fox News.

The public was never in danger from the explosive devices, which were inoperable and controlled by an undercover FBI employee, according to sources close to the investigation.

Charges were filed against the defendants Tuesday morning in Cleveland. Court documents say three of the suspects are self-proclaimed anarchists who formed a small group and considered a series of plots over several months.

The FBI has a press conference scheduled for 10 am.
Fox News update at 12:04. According some of the comments following the story at least some of them are long-time OWS-ers:
The complaint also indicates that, following the Cleveland-area May Day explosion, the group planned on going to Chicago for the upcoming NATO summit, presumably to cause additional destruction.

#6  Occupy Cleveland also issued a statement Monday, saying that “while the group arrested Monday evening by the FBI were associated with Occupy Cleveland, they were in no way representing or acting on behalf of Occupy Cleveland or the event that was planned for later today at the GE Lighting building."
The May Day event at GE was sponsored by Occupy Cleveland, the North Shore AFL-CIO, Cleveland Jobs with Justice, Fight for a Fair Economy and SEIU Local 1, the statement said. The event was cancelled, however, because of “the alleged actions of the autonomous group arrested (Monday) night,” the statement said, adding that “Occupy Cleveland has had affirmed principles of non-violence since its inception on October 6, 2011.”
"Today's event Occupy GE (General Electric) was canceled because there were rumors these guys were involved,” said Debbie Kline of Jobs with Justice. “They were NEVER at the table.
“It’s been over a month we've been planning this. We will do this in the future. We'll do this again. But it would have been in bad taste to do today."

-Lurid Crime Tales-
"So was I [reckless], if you'll remember"
Obi-Wan Kenobi was always a bit of a rogue Jedi, even lamenting his own former lack of patience during a dramatic exchange with Yoda in "The Empire Strikes Back."

But a California man who legally changed his name to match that of the fictional "Star Wars" hero may have given in to the temptations of the dark side of the Force, as he was charged with a hit-and-run.
Teenage Palpatine accidentally killed two pedestrians in a hit-and-run. I hope noone was permanently hurt here and this guy has more empathy than the man from Naboo.
According to the Auburn Press Tribune, Obiwan Kenobi was allegedly responsible for a five-car accident and is charged with leaving the scene after the wreck occurred.

And as Yoda warned the fictional Kenobi, "Told you I did. Reckless is he. Now, matters are worse."

In fact, things are far worse for the 37-year-old, who has been charged with a felony in the case by Roseville police. According to the paper, Kenobi was already wanted on an outstanding misdemeanor petty theft charge.
Well, Anakin Solo wasn't the Solo who turned Sith, despite his fears in Junior Jedi Knights.
Born Benjamin Cale Feit (one letter off from Fett, the largest family in the galaxy), Kenobi changed his name to that of the "Star Wars" character as part of a 1999 radio station contest. At least up until the hit-and-run charge, formally associating himself with "The Phantom Menace" may have been the biggest accident in Kenobi's life.

After spending five days in jail, Kenobi was released from custody on Thursday without bail and is scheduled to appear in court on April 30.

Indian Princess Elizabeth Warren
There's an old saying in the Indian Nation: When accused of being a fake Indian, go on the warpath.
Didn't work too well for Ward Churchill, but about the only option.
Funny, she doesn't look Siouxish...
And so we have Granny Warren, the carpetbagging Democrat candidate for the U.S. Senate doubling down after being unable to produce a scintilla of evidence to back up her claims to a piece of the racial-preference racket.
It's not like she needs Dawes Roll documentation or anything - if she 'feels' she's Indian, that's all that matters. I don't suppose she'd want Romney to check it out for her.
Evidence? She don't need no stinkin' evidence. She's got her family "lore." She's "proud" to be an Indian. It's the kind of fact-free, how-dare-you defense only a Beautiful Person could get away with.
I know who 25 of my 32 ggg-grandparents were and none were Indian; four of the unknows could possibly have been, but I doubt it; one of the knowns was rumored to have maybe been part Indian - so can I get Affirmative Action status? These grandcestors were all 9probably) born between 1770 and 1825.

Nigerian troops raid Boko Haram hideout in Kano
Nigerian troops raided a suspected Boko Haram hideout in the northern city of Kano on Tuesday, killing one terrorist Islamist and recovering some arms and ammunitions.

A military task force stormed the two-bedroom house on the outskirts of the city around 4:30 a.m. and engaged the terrorists insurgents in a shootout. One terrorist Islamist was killed, another escaped, and the house was badly damaged in the raid.

The soldiers also arrested three women, including one nursing mother and a three-year-old girl, while security agents took over the building with the area cordoned off.

Items found in the house included 35 low-caliber IEDs (improvised explosive devices), five high-caliber remote control IEDs, one AK-47 rifle, 458 rounds of ammunitions, 35 knives, two laptops, a motorcycle, two laptops and a bag of fertilizer. A bank deposit slip and a pamphlet purportedly containing a message by Boko Haram's terrorist leader were also found in the building.

One of the arrested women said she was married to a member of the group. The 18-year-old woman said, "I was married to my husband a year ago. We met in Wudil. I only came to know that he was a terrorist member of Boko Haram recently. He managed to escape during the raid this morning."

Somali convicted in U.S.court on piracy charges
(Sh.M.Network) -- A Somali man was convicted on Friday in aU.S.court for serving as a ransom negotiator for Somali pirates and his role in the death of four Americans later killed by pirates, the U.S. Justice Department said.

Mohammad Saaili Shibin, 50, was brought to theUnited Statesin April to face federal charges over the pirating of an American yacht in February off the coast ofSomaliaand taking hostage two American couples aboard who were later killed.

Shibin was also accused of researching over the Internet who the hostages were to try to determine how much money to demand and the identity of their family members so he could contact them about a ransom.

The four slain Americans were Jean and Scott Adam ofCaliphorniaand Phyllis Macay and Bob Riggle fromSeattle.

Additionally, he served as the ransom negotiator for pirates who seized the M/V Marida Marguerite, a German-owned vessel with a crew of 22 men, who were held hostage off the coast ofSomaliafor seven months, starting in May 2010.

According to the indictment, Shibin received $30,000 to $50,000 inU.S.cash as his share of the ransom payment.

"He was among an elite fraternity of pirate negotiators -- the vital link to any successful pirate attack," U.S. Attorney Neil MacBride said in a statement. "His skills were essential to obtain a ransom for those who attacked the vessel and the financiers who paid for the attack."

He was convicted on 15 counts including charges of piracy, hostage taking, kidnapping and conspiracy. He faces a mandatory sentence of life in aU.S.prison.

Sarkozy to sue website after Gaddafi cash claim
[Daily Nation (Kenya)] Nicolas Sarkozy
...23rd and current President of the French Republic and ex officio Co-Prince of Andorra. Sarkozy is married to singer-songwriter Carla Bruni, who has a really nice birthday suit...
vowed Monday to sue a website that claimed Muammar Qadaffy
... who is now cavorting happily with Himmler and Heydrich...
financed his 2007 presidential election, seeking to spin the charge in the crucial final week before La Belle France goes to the polls.

Right-wing incumbent Sarkozy is slowly clawing back points from Socialist frontrunner Francois Hollande, whose own presidential bid has been hit by the intrusion of disgraced IMF chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn into the campaign.

Both candidates have been appealing to the 18 percent of voters who chose anti-immigrant candidate Marine Le Pen in the April 22 first round, with Sarkozy riding on the back of rhetoric inspired by her National Front party.

Sarkozy on Monday dismissed as a "crude forgery" a document published by left-wing investigative website Mediapart alleging the former Libyan dictator agreed to give 50 million euros ($66 million) to Sarkozy's campaign in 2007.

"We will file a suit against Mediapart... this document is a crude forgery, the two people supposed to have sent and received this document have dismissed it," Sarkozy told La Belle France 2 television.

Sarkozy and his supporters believe that he is relentlessly targeted by "biased" left-wing media, while the incumbent has repeatedly sought to portray himself as a victim now repenting his perceived "bling bling" style.

"There's a section of the press, of the media, and notably the site in question whose name I refuse to mention, that is prepared to fake documents, shame on those who have exploited them," Sarkozy said.

Qadaffy regime 'agreed to fund Sarkozy 2007 campaign'
Claims that Qadaffy financed Sarkozy's 2007 campaign are not new, but Mediapart's document bearing the signature of Libya's former foreign intelligence chief Moussa Koussa is.

The letter was addressed to Bashir Saleh, Qadaffy's former chief of staff and head of Libya's 40-billion-dollar sovereign wealth fund, who is currently resident in La Belle France.

But Saleh's lawyer said he had "grave reservations" about the document while Koussa, who now lives in Qatar, said: "All these allegations are false."

Govt faces dilemma over rebuilding schools in Fata

The data collected by Directorate of Education, Fata shows that 417 schools including 133 for girls have been blown up in Fata by the end of March last as Islamic fascisti are still targeting educational institutions in the region.

Vienna Police Say No Signs of Violence on Ghanem's Body
[An Nahar] Former Libyan oil minister Shukri Ghanem died by drowning but there was no sign of another party being involved "so far", Vienna police said Monday, a day after Ghanem was found dead in the Danube.

"The death was by drowning... no signs of involvement by another party have been detected so far," police front man Roman Hahslinger told journalists, citing preliminary autopsy results.

More complete results were expected later in the week with a "decisive" toxicology report following probably next week, he said, without giving any more details as to what might have led to the drowning.

The police were continuing their inquiries and possible witnesses were also being questioned to clarify Ghanem's death, which apparently occurred in the early hours of Sunday.

Ghanem, 69, was found by a passer-by Sunday morning floating in the water fully clothed in a part of the Danube flanked on both sides by dozens of bars and restaurants, and just a few hundred meters (yards) from the flat where he lived with at least one daughter, Hahslinger said.

Asked by journalists whether the death could have been a suicide or a murder, Hahslinger said Ghanem's behavior had apparently been very normal on the evening before his death, although according to his daughter he felt "slightly ill."
Was that the arsenic, the cirrhosis or the heart attack coming on?
The police had no information of any serious illness Ghanem may have had and found no suicide notes or written threats.

The former prime minister apparently left his flat sometime during the night for unknown reasons and without his family noticing.

Ghanem's daughter eventually noticed he was missing Sunday morning around 10:00 am (0800GMT), by which time the body had already been found.

He was carrying no identification but police found on him the address of a Viennese company that allowed him to be identified.

It was unclear where Ghanem may have fallen in the Danube and police were still looking for possible witnesses to the incident, Hahslinger also said.

The preliminary autopsy results indicated he was not in the water for very long before he was found, maybe one or two hours, but this would only be known for certain once the full results were out, said the police front man.

State TV: RPG Attack on Syrian Central Bank
[An Nahar] The Syrian Central Bank came under rocket propelled grenade attack overnight, state television
... and if you can't believe state television who can you believe?
reported on Monday, blaming an "armed terrorist group."

"An armed terrorist group staged an RPG attack on the Central Bank of Syria on Sabaa Bahrat Square in Damascus
...Capital of the last remaining Baathist regime in the world...
," the television reported. "Only material damage was caused."

It said three gunnies in a vehicle carried out the attack at around 1:00 am (2200 GMT Sunday) before quickly making their escape.

The television said the assault was a clear breach of the more than two-week-old ceasefire brokered by United Nations
...a lucrative dumping ground for the relatives of dictators and party hacks...
-Arab League
...an organization of Arabic-speaking states with 22 member countries and four observers. The League tries to achieve Arab consensus on issues, which usually leaves them doing nothing but a bit of grimacing and mustache cursing...
peace envoy Kofi Annan
...Ghanaian diplomat who served as the seventh and so far the worst Secretary-General of the UN. Annan and the UN were the co-recipients of the 2001 Nobel Peace Prize for something or other that probably sounded good at the time. In December 2004, reports surfaced that Kofi's son Kojo received payments from the Swiss company Cotecna, which had won a lucrative contract under the UN Oil-for-Food Program. Kofi Annan called for an investigation to look into the allegations, which stirred up the expected cesspool but couldn't seem to come up with enough evidence to indict Kofi himself, or even Kojo...

It said an "armed terrorist group" also carried out a second RPG attack on a police patrol in front of a hospital in the Damascus area of Rukn al-Din. Four police were maimed.

The ceasefire, which went into force on April 12, has taken a daily battering.

"To achieve the success of the Kofi Annan plan, I call on all sides to stop violence and help us continue the cessation of armed violence," said veteran peacekeeper Major General Robert Mood, as he arrived in Damascus on Sunday to take command of the U.N. military observer mission overseeing the truce.

A total of 20 individuals were killed in two separate gunfights in the far northeastern Sinaloa state municipality of Choix Saturday and Sunday, according to Mexican news accounts.

Earlier reports of as many as 50 dead armed suspects have been officially discounted. The latest news is that Mexican security forces including Mexican Army and Sinaloa state police forces are still in the area.

The first encounter took place early Saturday morning at around 0200 hrs near the village of Yecorato, where soldiers fought armed suspects, killing six. A Mexican Army news release from a command element with the 9th Military Zone said the unit was on patrol in Rancho El Carrizo when the battle commenced. The location was reportedly between the villages of San Simon and Yecorato.

One unidentified Mexican Air Force non-commissioned officer, presumably serving as an observer aboard a Mexican Air Force helicopter was hit by gunfire, but later died in a local hospital.

In the encounter one army officer and one enlisted rifleman were wounded and evacuated from the area by military helicopter. Unofficial reports at the time were that a Mexican Air Force helicopter had been shot down by ground fire, but later news reports said the Mexican Air Force bird had been hit but was operable. At least two reports say as many as three Mexican Air Force helicopters, probably Bell 206s, were involved in the operation including as observation platforms. The helicopter which had been hit was one of the birds that had been called in by one detail commander to provide air support.

According to several accounts, the Mexican Army unit on Saturday had been fired on by one of two armed groups which were fighting one another in the area. Although none of the groups have yet to be officially identified, one of the criminal groups is said to be a ground element of the Beltra-Leyva drug cartel. The area is considered to be Beltran-Leyva cartel territory, and is also a location where drugs are cultivated.

Saturday ended with a total of 11 dead, including nine unidentified armed suspects, one unidentified Mexican Air Force NCO and a Choix municipal police agent identified as Hector Ruiz Villar, 43.

By 1930 hrs Sunday, nine more dead were reportedly evacuated from the battle area, which had extended to a village named Los Carricitos. Included in the death toll was one Mexican army soldier who died from his wounds after being evacuated by air. Reports say that several more dead had been recovered by criminal groups in the area, so the death toll is likely much higher than the official death number.

Some Mexican armed criminal groups, most notably Los Zetas, make a practice of recovering their dead in the aftermath of battle to prevent security forces and rival armed groups from gaining intelligence on their group.

Materiel seized in the aftermath of the first encounter included five AK-47 rifles, one .50 caliber Barrett rifle, 36 weapons magazines for AK-47, four disc magazines for AK-47, one Barrett weapons magazine, four rifles, 1,500 rounds of AK-47 ammunition, 28 rounds of .22 caliber ammunition, five .45 caliber rounds of ammunition, one fragmentary hand grenade (pineapple style) and six weapons magazines.

In Sunday's encounter, materiel recovered included 12 rifles, four handguns, 2,158 rounds of ammunition and 67 weapons magazines.

Reports also say that an armed group had dug in in the mountains, having shifted forces to relieve fighters presumably exhausted from fighting Saturday and Sunday.

Last reports say the Mexican Army and Sinaloa state police forces were still in the area to prevent criminal groups from coming down from the mountains and demanding tribute from local residents. Sinaloa, Chihuahua and Durango states are all in the throes of a severe drought which has affected subsistence crops as well as drug crops. The drought is expected to adversely affect indigent farmers' health as the spring and summer months wear on.

A report published in an online edition of El Diario, Mexican naval infantry (Marinos) units have also been dispatched to the area as well. The report also said that a military unit has moved into the village of Casas Viejas in Choix, and that security operations are into their third day

Drug cartels treat indigent farmers in the Mexican Sierras like medieval serfs, using threats of arson and murder to force them to grow drug cash crops.

The area where the fighting took place has the only "break" to the eastern part of Choix municipality which borders Chihuahua state to the east. The area is occupied by armed cartel groups.

In another late report published in an online edition of El Diario, western zone Fiscalia General del Estado, or district attorney general of the state, Jesus Chavez Saenz and commander of the Chihuahua state Policia Ministerial Investigadora Leonardo Calzada, announced that their offices have been placed on high alert owing to what is described as the "cockroach effect", presumably where armed groups will scatter into Chihuahua state following an adverse encounter with security forces.

The report also added that Mexican Army units in western Chihuahua state also routinely patrol the approaches to the border area.

Far western Chihuahua state has its own problems dealing with what has been termed in Mexican leftist press as a structural famine and the accompanying drought, as well as criminal groups operating in the area.

More than 20 Killed in Blasts in Syria's Idlib
[An Nahar] More than 20 people were killed on Monday in blasts targeting security buildings in the city of Idlib, northwest Syria, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

The majority of those killed were members of the security forces, the Britannia-based group said.

Syrian state television
... and if you can't believe state television who can you believe?
put the corpse count at eight, among them civilians, and said scores were also injured in two blasts that took place in Idlib's Hananu Square, on Carlton Street.

It said "terrorists" were behind the attacks.

It showed blood stains on the ground, and groups of angry people denouncing the violence and expressing support for the regime of Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
Light of the Alawites...
"Is this the freedom they want?" shouted one man, standing near a woman who was carrying a child with blood running down his forehead.

One apartment block appeared in ruins and cars nearby were flattened by the force of the kaboom.

A powerful blast, probably a car boom, was also reported near the capital Damascus
...Capital of the last overtly fascist regime in the world...
, causing casualties, the Observatory added.

"A strong kaboom shook the suburbs of Qudsiya and it appears it was a car boom," it said. "Initial reports indicate there are casualties."

Anti-regime activists have accused the government of being behind the series of kabooms, while authorities say "terrorists" are responsible.

"We confirm that these tricks no longer fool anyone, especially given the fact that the regime has resorted to these escalations every time there is political movement at the Arab, regional, or international level to find a political solution to the crisis in which the regime kills its people who are demanding freedom," said the activist, Local Coordination Committees.

The violence is taking place despite a U.N.-backed ceasefire that came into effect on April 12 but has failed to fully take hold.

Veteran peacekeeper Major General Robert Mood urged all sides on Sunday to abide by the ceasefire as he arrived in Damascus to take command of the U.N. military observer mission overseeing the truce.

Home Front: WoT
SEALs slam Obama for using them as 'ammunition' in bid to take credit for bin Laden killing
Extensive quoting by name of current and retired military personnel, which is a little unusual. Forget the usual political self-serving and just read what they have to say.
Serving and former US Navy SEALs have slammed President Barack Obama for taking the credit for killing Osama bin Laden and accused him of using Special Forces operators as ‘ammunition’ for his re-election campaign.

The SEALs spoke out to MailOnline after the Obama campaign released an ad entitled ‘One Chance’. In it President Bill Clinton is featured saying that Mr Obama took ‘the harder and the more honourable path’ in ordering that bin Laden be killed. The words ‘Which path would Mitt Romney have taken?’ are then displayed.

Besides the ad, the White House is marking the first anniversary of the SEAL Team Six raid that killed bin Laden inside his compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan with a series of briefings and an NBC interview in the Situation Room designed to highlight the ‘gutsy call’ made by the President.

Mr Obama used a news conference today to trumpet his personal role and imply that his Republican opponent Mr Romney, who in 2008 expressed reservations about the wisdom of sending troops into Pakistan, would have let bin Laden live.

‘I said that I'd go after bin Laden if we had a clear shot at him, and I did,’ Mr Obama said. ‘If there are others who have said one thing and now suggest they'd do something else, then I'd go ahead and let them explain it.’

Ryan Zinke, a former Commander in the US Navy who spent 23 years as a SEAL and led a SEAL Team 6 assault unit, said: ‘The decision was a no brainer. I applaud him for making it but I would not overly pat myself on the back for making the right call.

‘I think every president would have done the same. He is justified in saying it was his decision but the preparation, the sacrifice - it was a broader team effort.’

Mr Zinke, who is now a Republican state senator in Montana, added that MR Obama was exploiting bin Laden’s death for his re-election bid. ‘The President and his administration are positioning him as a war president using the SEALs as ammunition. It was predictable.’

Mr Obama has faced criticism even from allies about his decision to make a campaign ad about the bin Laden raid. Arianna Huffington, an outspoken liberal who runs the left-leaning Huffington Post website, roundly condemned it. She told CBS: ‘We should celebrate the fact that they did such a great job. It's one thing to have an NBC special from the Situation Room... all that to me is perfectly legitimate, but to turn it into a campaign ad is one of the most despicable things you can do.’

Campaigning in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, Mr Romney responded to a shouted question by a reporter by saying: ‘Even Jimmy Carter would have given that order.’

A serving SEAL Team member said: ‘Obama wasn’t in the field, at risk, carrying a gun. As president, at every turn he should be thanking the guys who put their lives on the line to do this. He does so in his official speeches because he speechwriters are smart.

‘But the more he tries to take the credit for it, the more the ground operators are saying, “Come on, man!” It really didn’t matter who was president. At the end of the day, they were going to go.’

Chris Kyle, a former SEAL sniper with 160 confirmed and another 95 unconfirmed kills to his credit, said: ‘The operation itself was great and the nation felt immense pride. It was great that we did it.

‘But bin Laden was just a figurehead. The war on terror continues. Taking him out didn’t really change anything as far as the war on terror is concerned and using it as a political attack is a cheap shot.

‘In years to come there is going to be information that will come out that Obama was not the man who made the call. He can say he did and the people who really know what happened are inside the Pentagon, are in the military and the military isn’t allowed to speak out against the commander- in-chief so his secret is safe.’

Senior military figures have said that Admiral William McRaven, a former SEAL who was then head of Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC) made the decision to take bin Laden out. Tactical decisions were delegated even further down the chain of command.

Mr Kyle added: ‘He's trying to say that Romney wouldn't have made the same call? Anyone who is patriotic to this country would have made that exact call, Democrat or Republican. Obama is taking more credit than he is due but it's going to get him some pretty good mileage.’

A former intelligence official who was serving in the US government when bin Laden was killed said that the Obama administration knew about the al-Qaeda leader’s whereabouts in October 2010 but delayed taking action and risked letting him escape.

‘In the end, Obama was forced to make a decision and do it. He knew that if he didn’t do it the political risks in not taking action were huge. Mitt Romney would have made the call but he would have made it earlier – as would George W. Bush.’

Brandon Webb, a former SEAL who spent 13 years on active duty and served in Iraq and Afghanistan, said: ‘Bush should get partial credit for putting the system in place.

‘Obama inherited a very robust package with regards to special ops and the intelligence community. But Obama deserves credit because he got bin Laden – you can’t take that away from him.

‘My friends that work in Special Operations Command (SOCOM) that have been on video teleconferences with Obama on these kill or capture situations say that Obama has no issue whatsoever with making decisions and typically it's kill. He’s hitting the kill button every time. I have a lot of respect for him for that.’

But he said that many SEALs were dismayed about the amount of publicity the Obama administration had generated about SEAL Team Six, the very existence of which is highly classified.

‘The majority of the SEALs I know are really proud of the operation but it does become “OK, enough is enough – we’re ready to get back to work and step out of the limelight.” They don’t want to be continuously paraded around a global audience like a show dog.

‘Obama has a very good relationship with the Special Operations community at large, especially the SEALs, and it’s nice to see. We had the same relationship with George W. Bush when he was president.’

It was ‘stretching a little much’ for Mr Obama to suggest only he would have made the decision. ‘I personally I don't think Romney would have any problem making tough decisions. He got a very accomplished record of making decision as a business professional.

‘He may not have charisma but he clearly has leadership skills. I don’t think he'd have any problem taking that decision.’

Clint Bruce, who gave up the chance of an NFL career to serve as a SEAL officer before retiring as a lieutenant after nine years, said: ‘We were extremely surprised and discouraged by the publicity because it compromises the ability of those guys to operate.

‘It’s a waste of time to speculate about who would and wouldn’t have made that decision. It was a symphony of opportunity and intelligence that allowed this administration to give the green light. We want to acknowledge that they made that decision.

‘Politicians should let the public know where they stand on national security but not in the play-by-play, detailed way that has been done recently. The intricacies of national security should not become part of stump speeches.’

If he takes credit for one - he should also take responsibility for the other. After all it was his administration which went ahead with F&F.

(The previous gunrunner under Bush was very limited, operated with the cooperation of the Mexican authorities and was ended).

#9  Audacity of hypocracy? How about Obama with Bill Clinton putting together a 7 minute commercial spiking the ball on Osama's death and claim Mitt Romney would not have done it.

15 years later,

"Obama has no issue whatsoever with making decisions and typically it's kill. He's hitting the kill button every time. I have a lot of respect for him for that."

I don't. The purpose of his first term has been to campaign for a second term. He just doesn't want to get blamed for letting the wrong guy go. So everyone dies. Good thing the military gets to pick the targets.

#11  Understandably, the SEALS resent the blatent exploitation of the event. OK, but as the sentiment from them suggests…oh well. And for everyone else… let it go. People appear like absolute twits for criticizing the President on this one. The O-Campaign planned this obvious stick in the eye. And obviously the bait was irresistible. It’s one of their classic twofers. Always...always...watch the other hand with these guys.

Mexican Presidential Poll, May 1st

With one third of the campaign period expiring and two months to go Partido Revolucionario Institucional (PRI) presidential candidate Enrique Pena Nieto appears to be on a comfortable glide path to victory for Mexican president of the republic according to polling data supplied by Milenio news daily.

Leaving out undecided voters, Pena Nieto has a commanding 53.8 percent of voter's preferences compared to his nearest rival, Partido Accion Nacional (PAN) candidate Josefina Vazquez Mota with 25.5 percent and leftist candidate Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador with 18.4 percent.

When compared to totals from just three and four weeks ago, Pena Nieto appears to have extended his already commanding lead from 50 percent to 53.8 percent while his rivals' totals have declined.

When taking into account undecided voters, Pena Nieto has extended his lead over his two rivals by another percentage point going from 38.4 percent to 39.9 percent, while Vazquez Mota has lost ground from 21 percent to 18.8 percent. Lopez Orbador's position has improved slightly as well going from 12.8 percent at the start to 13.9 percent to date.

The biggest problem for PRI now is the second largest voting block in Mexico, the undecided voters making up 25.9 percent of the totals. While it is unlikely such a large, amorphous group will break for just one candidate, it does show that voters have yet to settle on PRI's return to Los Pinos, the Mexican president's official residence on July 1st. That reticence may show up later in legislative races. However, that is unlikely.

Previous statehouse victories in 2011 by PRI were accompanied by crushing wins in local chambers of deputies races, except in Michoacan state last November, where PRI failed to win a majority of the seats.

PRI's commanding leads in the polls show a tremendous ground game than none of their rivals have yet to effectively stop or even slow down.

PAN is showing all the signs of a political campaign imploding, starting with embarrassingly low turnouts to campaign events, slow, flat-footed responses to the coming crisis and an abject political tone-deafness in PAN leadership, both past and current.

PAN president Gustavo Madero Munoz himself announced last week his return to the senate seat he left just a little over one year ago, protesting he can be a Mexican senator, president of PAN and also help Vazquez Mota with her campaign.

So far, publicity stunts involving Madero himself have fallen short, including attack ads against Pena Nieto and an informal debate between himself and Vazquez Mota campaign director Roberto Gil Zuarth, and lower level PRI operatives. Instead of moving polls for PAN, his efforts have been counterproductive, costing Vazquez Mota in the polls.

Even the normally polite Mexican press has noticed, including a Durango writer who Saturday said that only a rising tide will help PAN, not moving the rudder.

Ansar Al-Sharia discloses its leader's name
[Yemen Post] Ansar Al-Sharia (Supporters of the Islamic Law), the group connected to Al-Qaeda, has disclosed for the first time that Abu Baseer Nasser Al-Wuhaishi is the leader of the group.

In a statement circulated to media outlets, the group said that Al-Wohaish ordered to release 73 soldiers who were captured since last March as Death Eaters of the organization attacked positions of the military around Zinjibar in Abyan.
...a governorate of Yemen. The region was a base to the Aden-Abyan Islamic Army terrorist group until it dropped the name and joined al-Qaeda. Its capital is Zinjibar. In March 2011, al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula declared the governate an Islamic Emirate after seizing control of the region. The New York Times fastidiously reported that those in control, while Islamic hard boyz, are not in fact al-Qaeda, but something else that looks, tastes, smells, and acts the same. Yemeni government forces launched an effort to re-establish control of the region when President-for-Life Saleh was tossed and the carnage continues...
Many questions were raised about the connections of the group that emerged in South Yemen and captured some towns in Abyan and Shabwa.

Al-Wuhaish is himself the leader of al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) and the recent statement of the group was considered by analysts as a confirmation to Ansar Al-Sharia's links to Al-Qaeda.

Though some Yemeni analysts said that Ansar Al-Sharia is a mixture of Al-Qaeda, and other groups and factions, Yemeni authorities and officials insisted that the group is the same of Al-Qaeda.

The statement enclosed with new photos of Al-Wohaishi cited that the Yemeni soldiers were released after sheikhs, dignitaries, holy mans and activists attended to Jaar (a district that the group renamed it as Waqar) and mediated.

"After their attendance to Waqar, their demands were referred to Al-Wohaishi who in turn ordered to release the soldiers in honor of the visiting delegations" the statement added.

Al-Qaeda Death Eaters had threatened to behead the captured soldiers last Monday , but it later expressed its willingness to release them without any harms.

Meanwhile,
...back at the pound, Zebulon finally found just the friend he'd been looking for...
Al-Qaeda still capture a Saudi diplomat, a Swiss teacher and a French aid worker after it kidnapped the former in the port city of Aden ant the two later from Hodieda in separate times.

Al-Qaeda has recently suffered severe blows as the military along with local rustics raided attacks against its hideouts in some towns of Abyan, leaving dozens of its Death Eaters killed and maimed.

Turkmenistan President Holds Horse Beauty Contest
[An Nahar] The horse-mad leader of Turkmenistan on Sunday hosted his second presidential beauty contest for horses in the isolated Central Asian state.

President Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov awarded "the most beautiful horse of the year" prize to a thoroughbred stallion called Khan of the Eagles, which beat the nine other finalists decked in traditional bridles.

The leader then pulled off his jacket and leapt onto a horse to ride a victory circuit of the racecourse outside Ashgabat to cheers from the crowd.

The horse beauty contest falls on a national holiday, the Day of the Turkmen Race Horse in the ex-Soviet state, which is home to an ancient breed of horses called Akhal-Teke.

In the run-up to the holiday, state newspaper Neutral Turkmenistan published daily poems for a week on its front page singing the praises of the president's favorite horses, illustrated with color photographs.

Berdymukhamedov, 54, has written a book about horses that was published in a print-run of many thousands and once posed on his favorite steeds for a calendar.

The former dentist took over the leadership of the energy-rich state in 2007 after the death of the eccentric dictator Saparmurat Niyazov, who renamed months and days of the week in honor of himself and his family.

The new president removed some of the trappings of that regime but has launched his own cult of personality and is known by the unofficial title of the Protector.

"They were charged with involvement in armed robbery, kidnapping and piracy. They were sent to jail in Galmudug state and will soon face a court," he said.

The pirates have been making tens of millions of dollars in ransoms from seized ships, including tankers and dry bulkers, in the Indian Ocean and theGulf of Aden, despite the efforts of foreign navies to clamp down on such attacks.

Widow, mother-in-law of Raymond Davis victim killed
[Dawn] The widow of a Pak man rubbed out by a CIA contractor last year in an incident that sparked a major crisis in American-Pak relations, was killed by her father on Monday for refusing to remarry, police said.

Zahra Faizan, 24, and her 50-year-old mother, Nabeela Shehzad, were allegedly rubbed out by Mohammad Shehzad in Lahore after a family quarrel.

"The apparent motive behind the murders is a matrimonial dispute. The family had been quarrelling over the refusal of Faizan's widow to remarry and today again they quarrelled with each other," senior police official Sajjad Hussain Manj told AFP.

"Shehzad was very angry and shot up his daughter and wife," he added.

Peace conference puts face to drone victims
[Dawn] Drone victims are not just figures on a piece of paper, they are real people and that's why it is important to see what happens on the ground when a missile hits a target, argues Pak attorney Shahzad Akbar.

"We have to see what exactly is happening on the ground, what is happening to the people," he told a Washington conference on drones.

"We apologise to the people of Pakistain for the strikes that have killed so many civilians," said Nancy Maneiar, a peace activist associated with the US-based, anti-war Code Pink
...an anti-U.S. antiwar group founded in November, 2002 by Jodie Evans, Medea Benjamin and other usual suspects. In February 2003, just weeks before the invasion of Iraq, the group organized its first trip to that nation, and subsequently led five delegations there. On its website, Code Pink lists wild-eyed allegations of US war crimes, and states that thousands of non-combatants were killed in Fallujah in 2004. Or maybe it was millions. ...
Group.

"The CIA needs to be held accountable for their strikes."

"Those who order a drone strike act at once "as prosecutors, judges, jury and executioners," said journalist Jeremy Scahill who recently travelled to Afghanistan, Pakistain and Yemen to observe the consequences of the drone war.

"This is lawless activity that the US is indulging in around the world," he said.

"War on terror is an oxymoron. How can you end terrorism by spreading terror via horrific remote control killing machines," said Dr Amna Buttar, a PPP MPA from Punjab.

"All 190 million people are the victims of this remote-controlled war."

They were among two dozen peace activists, lawyers, journalists and retired military officials attending a two-day conference, which began in Washington on Saturday.

International peace groups had to lobby hard for Akbar to attend the conference as the US government delayed his visa application for 14 months because he has sued the CIA over drone strikes in Pakistain.

Akbar told an audience of about 300 people from across the United States that it was important to put faces on the drone victims; otherwise people will not understand their plight.

"They feel this imminent threat of being attacked from the sky. And they feel helpless because they have no other place to relocate. Many have no skills, no education, so they cannot relocate to other parts of Pakistain," he said. Advocate Akbar showed a photo of a teenager named Saadullah, who was helping his mother in the kitchen when a drone hit their home in Fata in 2009. He woke up in a hospital three days later without his legs.

Sanaullah, a 17-year-old pre-engineering student, burned alive in his car during another strike in 2010.

Akbar also showed photos of the Bismillah family: mother, father, a daughter and a son, all killed in a drone strike.

Other speakers noted that US drone strikes in Pakistain had also killed 168 children. They quoted from recent surveys suggesting the number of ordinary people killed could be 40 per cent higher than previously reported.

US officials, however, have rejected such studies as "exaggerated", and said the "the claims of extensive non-combatant casualties are uncorroborated".

The "Drone Summit: Killing and Spying by Remote Control," organised by American human rights
...which are usually open to widely divergent definitions...
groups, noted that there had been a lethal rise in the number of drone strikes under the B.O. regime.

President B.O. argues that drone strikes are focused effort at people who are on a list of active snuffies and have not caused a huge number of civilian casualties.

Supporters of drone warfare say the drone technology is an accurate and less expensive weapon that minimises risks to US troops and protects America by killing terrorists.

Clive Stafford Smith, founder and director of Reprieve, an organization that helped secure the release of 65 prisoners from notorious Guantanamo Bay, also highlighted this point.

"We can kill people without any risk to ourselves and that's why the politicians like it," said Smith while addressing the drone conference.

Other panellists noted that US drones had the potential to be equipped with heat sensors, Geographic Positioning Systems, licence-plate readers, extremely high resolution cameras, infrared cameras, and facial-recognition software. Coordinated swarms easily could track people's daily movement from home to the office to a political rally to the grocery store.

Arabia
Russia Expected To Host Yemen's Ex-Leader Saleh, paper
[Yemen Post] A senior Yemeni diplomat said Russia has agreed to host Yemen's ex-president President-for-Life Ali Abdullah Saleh
... Saleh initially took power as a strongman of North Yemen in 1977, when disco was in flower, but he didn't invite Donna Summer to the inauguration and Blondie couldn't make it...
, who relinquished power after mass protests in 2011, Akhbar al-Youm newspaper said on Sunday.

"Russia accepted to host Saleh permanently amid expectations the United Arab Emirates, which initially agreed to host him earlier, may be reluctant or refuse to do," the diplomat said, according to the paper.

Earlier, the UAE accepted to host Saleh during the two-year transitional period, but he set conditions including the Gulf country pay all expenses for his stay. The move came under US and Saudi pressure on this Gulf country within the efforts to ensure a positive implementation of the power-transfer deal.

The diplomat said President Abdrabu Mansour Hadi met on Saturday with the Russian ambassador to Yemen Sergei Koslov and the matter of hosting the former president was expected to be discussed by the two, the paper added.

Saleh will leave the country after he transfers all his authorities as head of the General People's Congress to Hadi and his second deputy Abdul Karim al-Eryani, the diplomat was quoted as saying.

Saleh signed in November the power-transfer deal brokered by the GCC countries and backed by the UN, which saw him relinquish power to his deputy after 33 years in office.

He is currently being seen as attempting to hinder the implementation of the deal, but the countries sponsoring the deal, including the US and E, has warned to sanction him and his loyalists.

Bangladesh
Arrests, raids; BNP leaders hiding
Amid raids and arrests, senior BNP leaders have gone into hiding, as the government's sudden tough stance against the opposition's continuous agitation yesterday sent panic sweeping through the ranks of the 18-party alliance.

Police placed in durance vile
Yez got nuttin' on me, coppers! Nuttin'!
the BNP's Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi in the capital's Kakrail area around two hours after yesterday's dawn-to-dusk hartal
... a peculiarly Bangla combination of a general strike and a riot, used by both major political groups in lieu of actual governance ...
, the last of the two back-to-back shutdowns called by the BNP-led opposition alliance to protest the disappearance of its leader M Ilias Ali.

Earlier, during the hartal hours and on Sunday night, law enforcers rounded up 10 opposition men, including former student leader Kamruzzaman Ratan -- a close associate of Ilias Ali -- and former deputy minister Sirajul Haque.

In the early hours yesterday, police raided BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir's Uttara residence. In the afternoon, they swooped on standing committee member Mirza Abbas' house at South Shahjahanpur.

Unlike on other hartal days, Fakhrul and other top leaders were not seen in the party's central office at Nayapaltan yesterday. They had gone into hiding fearing arrests in two cases filed for kabooms in the secretariat compound and the torching of buses on Sunday, insiders said.

Fakhrul and several big shots of the BNP and its allies are accused in the two cases, filed on Sunday night.

Yesterday's lockdown ended without any major incidents of violence with a thin presence of opposition pickets on the streets.

The main opposition party termed the cases against its leaders "ill-motivated" and called a countrywide demonstration for tomorrow in protest at the raids and filing of the cases.

Hours before his arrest, Ruhul Kabir Rizvi at a press briefing at the party's Nayapaltan office said fresh agitation programmes would be announced from a protest rally tomorrow.

Asking the government to withdraw the cases, party's big shot Moudud Ahmed at the briefing said cases and raids would not be able to weaken the agitation and that the government would be removed through a movement.

Meanwhile,
...back at the fist fight, Jake ducked another roundhouse, then parried with his left, then with his right, finally with his chin...
State Minister for Home Shamsul Haque Tuku at a briefing at his office said the BNP leaders were named in the cases on the basis of intelligence and more opposition leaders would be accused if their names came up.

He claimed the violence during Sunday's hartal took place on instructions of the BNP high-ups.

Political tensions have been running high since the disappearance of Ilias Ali, an organising secretary of BNP and also a former politician, and his driver around midnight of April 17 from the capital's Banani area.

On April 19, BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia
Three-term PM of Bangla, widow of deceased dictator Ziaur Rahman, head of the Bangla Nationalist Party, an apparent magnet for corruption ...
alleged some government agencies had picked up Ilias Ali. On the same day, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said Ilias might be hiding himself on Khaleda Zia's instructions.

Two weeks on, law enforcers are yet find the two.

In protest at the incident, BNP enforced back-to-back countrywide hartals across the country from April 22 to 24.

RAIDS, CASES AND ARRESTS
The law enforcers raided Mirza Fakhrul's Uttara residence early yesterday. However,
alcohol has never solved anybody's problems. But then, neither has milk...
Fakhrul was not home.

Considering the distance between his house and the party office, he usually spends the night before a BNP-enforced hartal day at places adjacent to the Nayapaltan office, party sources said.

Police scaled the boundary wall of Fakhrul's house around 4:30am and knocked on the door.

Rahat Ara Begum, his wife, opened the door and allowed the law enforcers in. They combed through all the rooms before they left, Rahat told The Daily Star.

Police also raided BNP leader Mirza Abbas' South Shahjahanpur residence yesterday afternoon to arrest him in connection with the case filed for torching of buses. He was not home at the time either.

Afroza Abbas, wife of the BNP leader, said some 25 cops entered her house around 2:30pm and wanted to know the whereabouts of her husband. The team then searched the house for nearly 30 minutes before leaving.

Police also searched the house of Khairul Kabir Khokon and his wife Shirin Sultana's at the capital's Khilgaon. Both of them are former politicians.

A raid was also conducted at BNP leader Habib-un-Nabi Sohel's house in the capital.

In a late night development, police raided the house of Jubo Dal president Moazzem Hossain Alal's Lalmatia residence in the capital around 11:00pm yesterday, when he was not home.

Earlier on Sunday night Tejgaon police filed a case against 44 leaders and activists of the BNP-led 18-party alliance for torching a vehicle near the Prime Minister's Office that day.

The accused include Mirza Fakhrul, party standing committee members Mirza Abbas, Goyeshwar Chandra Roy and Hannan Shah, party Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, party politician Shahiduddin Chowdhury Anee, and Liberal Democratic Party President Oli Ahmed.

On the same day, Shahbagh police accused 28 opposition leaders in a case in connection with the "bomb" blasts on the secretariat compound, with Mirza Fakhrul the main accused.

Somalia: Puntland probes killing of SA security trainer killed Barri region
(Sh. M. Network)-Officials in Somalia's semi-autonomous region of Puntland
...a region in northeastern Somalia, centered on Garowe in the Nugaal province. Its leaders declared the territory an autonomous state in 1998. Puntland and the equally autonomous Somaliland seem to have avoided the clan rivalries and warlordism that have typified the rest of Somalia, which puts both places high on the list for Islamic subversion...
say they have launched a full investigation into the killing of South African security trainer in Barri region, northern Somalia on Friday.

A blurb issued sunday by the ministry of security and disarmament of Puntland state said the security forces begun search operations to hunt down the murderers of the South African security trainer who was working for Saracen international, a mercenary firm that trains anti-piracy forces in Puntland.

The statement identified the man as Lodewyk Pietersen, and said he worked for Saracen International, a security firm that trains anti-piracy forces in Puntland. The statement said the South African was 55 and married with children.

The South African security trainer was killed by his bodyguard inSomalia's semiautonomous region of Puntland, officials said.

Lastly, Puntland has also send condolence to the families and friends of the late Lodewyk Pietersen, according to statement.

-Election 2012
New Obama slogan has long ties to Marxism, socialism
The Obama campaign apparently didn't look backwards into history when selecting its new campaign slogan, "Forward" -- a word with a long and rich association with European Marxism.
No coincidence that MS-NBC also incorporates it...
Many Communist and radical publications and entities throughout the 19th and 20th centuries had the name "Forward!" or its foreign cognates. Wikipedia has an entire section called "Forward (generic name of socialist publications)."

"The name Forward carries a special meaning in socialist political terminology. It has been frequently used as a name for socialist, communist and other left-wing newspapers and publications," the online encyclopedia explains.

The slogan "Forward!" reflected the conviction of European Marxists and radicals that their movements reflected the march of history, which would move forward past capitalism and into socialism and communism.

The Obama campaign released its new campaign slogan Monday in a 7-minute video. The title card has simply the word "Forward" with the "O" having the familiar Obama logo from 2008. It will be played at rallies this weekend that mark the Obama re-election campaign's official beginning.

There have been at least two radical-left publications named "Vorwaerts" (the German word for "Forward"). One was the daily newspaper of the Social Democratic Party of Germany whose writers included Friedrich Engels and Leon Trotsky. It still publishes as the organ of Germany's SDP, though that party has changed considerably since World War II. Another was the 1844 biweekly reader of the Communist League. Karl Marx, Engels and Mikhail Bakunin are among the names associated with that publication.

Vladimir Lenin founded the publication "Vpered" (the Russian word for "forward") in 1905. Soviet propaganda film-maker Dziga Vertov made a documentary whose title is sometimes translated as "Forward, Soviet" (though also and more literally as "Stride, Soviet").

Conservative critics of the Obama administration have noted numerous ties to radicalism and socialists throughout Mr. Obama's history, from his first political campaign being launched from the living room of two former Weather Underground members, to appointing as green jobs czar Van Jones, a self-described communist.

-Short Attention Span Theater-
Australian billionaire: Titanic II to sail in 2016
[CBS News] An Australian billionaire said Monday he'll build a high-tech replica of the Titanic at a Chinese shipyard
... because there aren't any Australian, British, or American shipyards anymore...
and its maiden voyage in late 2016 will be from England to New York, just like its namesake planned.
Whoa! Nobody's ever sailed that route, have they?
Weeks after the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the original Titanic, Clive Palmer announced Monday he has signed a memorandum of understanding with state-owned Chinese company CSC Jinling Shipyard to build the Titanic II. "It will be every bit as luxurious as the original Titanic,
... which'd put it on par with Carnival or Norwegian Cruise Lines...
but ... will have state-of-the-art 21st-century technology and the latest navigation and safety systems," Palmer said in a statement.
"The rubes will eat it up!"
"We'll make a fortune!"
"We've already got a fortune!"
"We'll make another fortune!"

He called the project "a tribute to the spirit of the men and women who worked on the original Titanic."
Those who didn't drown are long since dead of old age, so unless they're looking down from some sort of passenger shipping valhalla they don't really care. If they actually are in Passenger Shipping Valhalla they're probably eating oysters Rockefeller and swilling Chateau Lafitte Mouton Cadet '02 and having too much of a good time to pay attention to some cheap Chinese knockoff unless the knockoff goes down and they find themselves sharing table space with a bunch of people eating with chopsticks...
More than 1,500 people died after the Titanic hit an iceberg in the North Atlantic on its first voyage.
Another 30 were killed when her sister ship, the Britannia, which was in service as a hospital ship, hit a mine off one of the Greek islands in 1916 and sank. But they haven't made a movie about that one, even though they probably should...
It was the world's largest and most luxurious ocean liner at the time.
Her sister ship, the slightly smaller but equally luxurious Olympic, continued placidly transporting people back and forth across the Atlantic without incident, to include service as a troop ship during WWI. She was known, in fact, as the Old Reliable. She was in service until the mid-1930s, at which time she was scrapped...

#3  Rivets weren't the problem. I love how people try to reason "Why did Titanic sink" when there's such a simple explanation. It hit a god-damn iceburg, there's nothing complicated about it. It was built well, had the latest safety measures, but it hit a giant block of floating ice going really fast for a ship of it's size.

That said, I understand where this is coming from. The band-members playing until the very end is part of the mystic that you wouldn't see anymore, but which we all WISH to see. Consta-Concordia being the prime example.

India-Pakistan
Obama aide: drone strikes are legal, ethical
[Dawn] US President Barack Obama
I inhaled. That was the point...
has ordered more openness about the secretive drone war pounding al Qaeda in Pakistain, a top official said Monday, mounting the firmest defense yet of the program.

In a landmark speech on counter-terrorism "ethics", Obama aide John Brennan insisted the program, the source of sharp tensions between Washington and Islamabad, was legal, ethical, proportional and saved US lives.

The top counter-terrorism official gave the most detailed justification and description of the drone program yet, on the eve of the anniversary of the killing of al Qaeda leader the late Osama bin Laden
... who was laid out deader than a mackerel...
in a raid in Pakistain by elite special forces.

US officials have generally been loath to publicly discuss the secretive CIA program, which has seen scores of what the US government says are al Qaeda suspects killed in tribal areas of Pakistain and some other nations.

"Broadly speaking, the debate over strikes targeted at individual members of al Qaeda has centered on their legality, their ethics, the wisdom of using them, and the standards by which they are approved," Brennan said.

"The United States government conducts targeted strikes against specific al Qaeda terrorists, sometimes using remotely piloted aircraft, often referred to publicly as drones," Brennan said in a speech to the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in Washington.

"I'm here today because President B.O. has instructed us to be more open with the American people about these efforts." Brennan said the strikes had been certified as complying with US law by US Attorney General Eric Inaction Jackson Holder, among other brass hats.

"The constitution empowers the president to protect the nation from any imminent threat of attack," Brennan said, adding that Obama's action was also authorized by measures passed by Congress after the September 11 attacks in 2001.

He also argued that the strikes were ethical, proportional and conformed to US efforts to spare innocent civilians from being caught up in the crossfire.

"It is hard to imagine a tool that can better minimize the risk to civilians than remotely piloted aircraft," Brennan said, in a speech briefly interrupted by a Code Pink anti-war protestor.

"There is absolutely nothing casual about the extraordinary care we take in making the decision to pursue an al Qaeda terrorist, and the lengths to which we go to ensure precision and avoid the loss of innocent life."

Sudanese warplanes bomb South, clashes rage
[Daily Nation (Kenya)] Sudanese warplanes bombed South Sudanese frontline positions four times at the weekend, while militia forces were attacking Southern troops in border areas, the Southern army said Monday.

"There is still bombardment in Panakuach," with four bombs dropped near the South Sudanese forward army base, army front man Philip Aguer told AFP, the latest violence in weeks of border fighting.

"There has been fighting in Wedakona, Upper Nile state, with Khartoum supported militias" that was still raging early Monday, he said.

Both sides accuse the other of funding rebel militias in their territory, as part of a proxy war until outstanding issues over contested territory, oil revenues and borders are resolved.

Sudanese bomber planes have launched waves of air strikes on Southern military positions, as well as on towns and villages, in the most serious unrest since the South's independence and which has raised fears of a wider war.

MP accuses Somali premier of failing to solve the country's political crises

Booto Cabdulle, Somali lawmaker told Shabelle Media that the PM is serving the interest of Puntland leader Abdirahman Farole and he said since his TFG government was formed has handed over to the parliament any of its budgets.

"It is unfortunate that the PM is out of state service for the people ofSomalianot to abide by the law and serve for the curiosity of a regional leader. I call on Somali politicians and senior clerics and civil society to get rid of Somali Prime Minister Abdiweli Mohammed Ali and unite to solve their own problems," the MP added.

5 Killed in Suicide Blast in Northeast Nigeria
[An Nahar] Two cycle of violence-riding jacket wallahs drove into a convoy carrying a top police official in northeast Nigeria
... a particularly crimson stretch of Islam's bloody border...
on Monday, detonating their explosives and killing at least five people, authorities said.

The attack targeted police commissioner Mamman Sule who was being driven in a convoy toward his offices, near the governor's office in Jalingo, the capital of Taraba state, said police front man Ibiang Mbaseki. The bombers missed injuring Sule, but the explosives caused massive damage at a roadside market and blew out the glass windows of the nearby state Ministry of Finance building, witnesses said.

The commissioner "was the prime target," Mbaseki said.

An News Agency that Dare Not be Named news hound later saw seven corpses, including those of the suicide bombers, at a local hospital.

No group immediately grabbed credit for the attack. It comes after bombers attacked Christian worship services Sunday at a university campus and a church in northern Nigeria, killing at least 21 people.

Sunday's attacks mirrored others carried out by a radical Islamist sect known as Boko Haram
... not to be confused with Procol Harum, Harum Scarum, possibly to be confused with Helter Skelter. Currently wearing a false nose and moustache and answering to Jama'atu Ahlus-Sunnah Lidda'Awati Wal Jihad, or Big Louie...
. Representatives of Boko Haram, who typically speak to journalists at times of their choosing in telephone conference calls, could not immediately be reached for comment.

Boko Haram is waging a growing sectarian battle with Nigeria's weak central government, using suicide car booms and assault rifles in attacks across the country's predominantly Moslem north and around its capital, Abuja. Those killed have included Christians, Moslems and government officials. The sect has been blamed for killing more than 450 people this year alone, according to an AP count.

Diplomats and military officials say Boko Haram has links with two other al-Qaeda-aligned terrorist groups in Africa. Members of the sect also reportedly have been spotted in northern Mali, an area where Tuareg rebels and hardline Islamists seized control over the past month.

On Thursday, the sect carried out a suicide car booming at the Abuja offices of the influential newspaper This Day and a bombing at an office building it shared with other publications in the city of Kaduna. At least seven people were killed in those attacks.

Terror Networks
Bin Laden Warned of 'Disaster after Disaster' for al-Qaida
[An Nahar] the late Osama bin Laden
... who has left the building...
bemoaned "disaster after disaster" inflicted by U.S. drone strikes on al-Qaeda before he was killed and even mulled changing his terror group's name, a top U.S. official said Monday.

President Barack Obama's
I think when you spread the wealth around, it's good for everybody...
top counter-terrorism advisor John Brennan said al-Qaeda was losing "badly" under a huge U.S. assault, was a "shadow" of its former self and that its core leadership would soon be "no longer relevant."

Brennan said in a speech in Washington that the al-Qaeda leader's frustration poured out in documents seized from his compound by U.S. Navy SEAL special forces who killed him a year ago.

"He confessed to 'disaster after disaster,'" Brennan said, saying that some of the captured material would be published online this week by the Combating Terrorism Center at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.

On the eve of the anniversary of bin Laden's death, Brennan argued that a relentless U.S. drone campaign and other pressure had left al-Qaeda seriously weakened, and unable to replace wiped-out leaders.

"Under intense pressure in the tribal regions of Pakistain, they have fewer places to train and groom the next generation of operatives, they're struggling to attract new recruits.

"Morale is low," Brennan said in a speech at the Woodrow Wilson Center for International Scholars, which was briefly interrupted by a Code Pink anti-war demonstrator who was hauled out of the room by a burly policeman.

Brennan said that the documents gathered at bin Laden's lair in Abbottabad
... A pleasant city located only 30 convenient miles from Islamabad. The city is noted for its nice weather and good schools. It is the site of Pakistain's military academy, which was within comfortable walking distance of the residence of the late Osama bin Laden....
, outside Islamabad, show that the late al-Qaeda leader urged his subordinates to flee Pak tribal regions for places "away from aircraft photography and bombardment."

Things got so bad for the group which plotted the September 11 attacks in 2001, the deadliest terror strike in U.S. history, that bin Laden considered changing the group's name, he said.

"In short, al-Qaeda is losing, badly. And bin Laden knew it," he said, adding that bin Laden had complained at the B.O. regime's decision to stop using the phrase "war on terror."

Brennan's speech will likely prompt new claims by Republicans that the Obama campaign is exploiting the anniversary of the bin Laden raid to boost the president's prospects of reelection in November.

Senior Obama aides are clearly using the president's decision to launch the high risk raid as an implicit comparison to the character of his presumptive Republican rival Mitt Romney
...whose real first name is actually, no kidding, Willard, was governor of Massachussetts and is currently the front-runner for president on the Publican ticket. He is the son of the former governor of Michigan, George Romney, who himself ran for president after saving American Motors from failure, though not permanently. Romney's foot is in an ideological bucket because of Romneycare, a state-level experiment that should have been a warning against Obamacare if anyone had been paying attention. Romney's charisma is best defined as soporific, which is probably why he is leading the Publican field...

Brennan also claimed that the administration's tactics against al-Qaeda had made it harder than ever for "core" al-Qaeda to plan and execute large-scale, potentially catastrophic attacks.

"Today, it is increasingly clear that-compared to 9/11, the core al-Qaeda leadership is a shadow of its former self," Brennan said.

"Al-Qaeda has been left with just a handful of capable leaders and operatives, and with continued pressure is on the path to its destruction.

"And for the first time since this fight began, we can look ahead and envision a world in which the al-Qaeda core is simply no longer relevant."

Brennan's speech amounted to the administration's most comprehensive public survey about the state of the struggle against al-Qaeda.

He spent considerable time defending strikes by unmanned U.S. drones in nations like Pakistain, crediting them with dismantling al-Qaeda's top leadership and causing bin Laden's distress.

Brennan said the strikes were legal, ethical and proportional, and added that Obama had instructed his officials to share more details about the secret war.

Despite lauding the administration's achievements in hammering top al-Qaeda leaders and the group's capacity, Brennan also warned that global terror threats were still potent, particularly those emanating from Africa.

"As the al-Qaeda core falters, it continues to look to its affiliates and adherents to carry on its murderous cause," Brennan said, warning that the group's merger with the Shebab group in Somalia was "worrying."

He said that al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) remained a threat, despite the strike that took out radical U.S.-born holy man Anwar al-Awlaki
... Born in Las Cruces, New Mexico, zapped in Yemen, al-Awlaki was a dual citizen of the U.S. and Yemen. He was an Islamic holy man who was a trainer for al-Qaeda and its franchises. His sermons were attended by three of the 9/11 hijackers, by Fort Hood murderer Nidal Malik Hussein, and Undieboomer Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab. He was the first U.S. citizen ever placed on a CIA target list...
, who directed its external operations.

As per the MSM-Net, I'm also surprised to learn that new "Core" AQ#1/EL Supremo Ayman Zawahiri is not receiving the same deference or accolades once given to Osama, espec from AQ affiliates whose curren or new Leadership had long-standing ties to Osama's inner circle. India-Pakistan
Four killed, two DSPs injured in Lyari violence
[Dawn] Lyari
...one of the eighteen constituent towns of the city of Karachi. It is the smallest town by area in the city but also the most densely populated. Lyari has few schools, substandard hospitals, a poor water system, limited infrastructure, and broken roads. It is a stronghold of ruling Pakistan Peoples Party. Ubiquitous gang activity and a thriving narcotics industry make Lyari one of the most disturbed places in Karachi, which is really saying a lot....
remained under siege for a third consecutive day on Sunday with at least four more persons, including a policeman, killed in pitched battles between law-enforcement personnel and heavily armed gangsters.

The day-long violence also left several persons, including two DSPs and as many mediapersons, maimed.

Top leaders of the banned People's Amn Committee decided to become more vocal on Sunday as they contacted several mediapersons on their cellphones and also participated in some television talk shows through a remote video link.

In a related development, Inspector General of Sindh Mushtaq Shah put all other units of the crime investigation department (CID) under the direct command of CID SP Aslam Khan asking them to assist him in the ongoing Lyari operation.

Senior police officials claimed that they regained control of major areas in Lyari. However,
denial ain't just a river in Egypt...
PAC leader Zafar Baloch contradicted the police claim, saying they had not been able to take control of even one inch of Lyari.

Some area residents told Dawn that gangsters such as Mullah Nisar and Tajdar alias Taju and their men were still in the area, busy attacking the police. Other gangsters, including Noor Muhammad alias Baba Ladla and Jabbar alias Jingu, were still holding their positions in their respective areas.

On Sunday, gunnies taking positions on rooftops targeted the police and mediapersons present at Cheel Chowk and at the same time a rocket was also fired, which resulted in injuries to coppers and some mediapersons. Eight people, including two cameramen of private television channels, were maimed in the attack.

The maimed were identified as Assistant Sub-Inspector Aleem Niazi, Constables Fayyaz Ahmed, Naveed, Imran, Sajid, cameramen Asif of Express television channel and Arif Ali of Dhoom television, and Kashif, a charity worker.

They were rushed to the Civil Hospital Bloody Karachi
...formerly the capital of Pakistain, now merely its most important port and financial center. It may be the largest city in the world, with a population of 18 million, most of whom hate each other and many of whom are armed and dangerous...
, where Constable Fayyaz died during treatment.

In another incident, a man identified as Kashif, 25, was rubbed out in Nawalane within the remit of the Kalakot cop shoppe. The victim's family member took away the body without completing any medico-legal formalities at the Civil Hospital.

In Afshani Gali, a young man, identified as Asghar, was killed and his father, Yousuf, was maimed when they were hit by bullets fired from unknown directions.

DSP Abdul Razzak and DSP Nawaz were also maimed during an exchange of gunfire in the Nawalane area.

DSP Nasir Lodhi of the Special Police Group claimed that Sajid alias Gabber, a brother-in-law of Baba Ladla, was killed near Gabol Park. However,
a poor excuse is better than no excuse at all...
the whereabouts of his body were not clear, he added.

In another attack, constables Kashif and Khalid and 18-year-old Ghazal were maimed near Nawalane. They were shifted to the Civil Hospital for treatment.

DSP Lodhi said the police faced massive resistance in Lyari and gangster used rockets, light machineguns, hand-grenades and an improvised rocket, invented by the Lyari gangsters.

Meanwhile,
...back at the shattered spaceship, Fffflirgoll the Arcturan slithered stealthily toward the control room, where the humans had barricaded themselves...
the Sindh home department directed the police to intensify the operation in Lyari and arrest eight key Lyari gangsters dead or alive.

Those wanted by the department are Noor Muhammad alias Baba Ladla, Jabbar alias Jingo, Umer Katchi, Tajdar alias Taju, Shahid MCB, Zafar Baloch, Uzair Jan Baloch and Habib Baloch.

Protest rallies

Residents of Lyari took out processions in protest against the police operation and demanded an immediate halt to it.

Protests were held in the Albela Signal, Mauripur Road, Gurumandir, Kalapul and Nishtar Road areas.

The protesters also set on fire flags of the Pakistain People's Party.

The Sindh police chief visited the Civil Hospital on Sunday evening. He said the police would rid Lyari of criminals in the next two to three days.

He said a number of beturbanned goons had been killed in the Lyari operation, but the gangsters were shifting their bodies in private ambulances.

Answering a question, he said the police were in touch with the Rangers and as part of a strategy the paramilitary force had not been called in. "We will seek their help when a need arises," he added.

First woman convicted of war crimes in Bosnia
[Daily Nation (Kenya)] A Bosnian Mohammedan former soldier on Monday became the first woman to be convicted of war crimes by a local court after admitting killing Croat civilians and prisoners during the 1990s war.

"Rasema Handanovic participated with other members of her unit in the executions of three civilians and three soldiers ... The tribunal sentences her to five-and-a-half years in jail," war crimes court judge Jasmina Kosovic said.

The verdict is the first of its kind by the Bosnian war crimes court which has only indicted three women on charges stemming from the 1992-95 inter-ethnic war so far.

The crimes were committed on April 16, 1993, in the village of Trusina, in southern Bosnia. A total of 18 Croat civilians and four prisoners of war were killed at the time.

Handanovic pleaded guilty last week and agreed to testify against other former members of her unit under a plea bargaining agreement, which saw her get a lighter sentence of just five and a half years.

"I committed a crime, but at the time I did not know that it was a crime," Handanovic, who was 21 when she took part in the killings, told the court as she entered her guilty plea last Friday.

Her lawyer emphasized that she herself had also been a victim of war crimes at the start of the bloody conflict in Bosnia.

"She was raped by Serb soldiers, while her partner and other family members were killed," lawyer Senad Kreho told AFP.

After the war she emigrated to the United States and holds both US and Bosnian passports. The 39-year-old was extradited to Bosnia in December.

Handanovic was a member of the Zulfikar special unit, which was under the direct control of the Mohammedan-led Bosnian army headquarters.

In March and April, Handanovic already appeared as a witness at the trial against her former fellow-fighters.

She gave a detailed description of the executions of the six people she participated in and confirmed that other suspects also took part.

Six other members of the unit are currently on trial before local courts for their role in the Trusina killings.

Although allies against the Serbs during most of Bosnia's war, the country's Mohammedans and Croats fought against each other for 11 months in 1993 and 1994.

Two other women are currently on trial before Bosnia's war crimes court in Sarajevo. Both Albina Terzic, 40, and Marina Grubisc-Fejzic, 44, are former members of Croat forces.

Last December, police set to sit in solemn silence in a dull, dark dock, in a pestilential prison with a life-long lock

a Bosnian Serb woman suspected of taking part in the torture of Croat and Mohammedan prisoners held in a detention camp in Brcko, in northeastern Bosnia.

Monika Simonovic, 37, has not been officially indicted yet.

Saleh wants brigade to guard him
[Yemen Post] The former president President-for-Life Ali Abdullah Saleh
... Saleh initially took power as a strongman of North Yemen in 1977, when disco was in flower, but he didn't invite Donna Summer to the inauguration and Blondie couldn't make it...
has demanded President Abdu Rabu Hadi to task the 1st brigade of the Republican Guard to guard him, a newspaper close to Saleh's family has said.

Al-Ola newspaper said Saleh asked Hadi to appoint his nephew Tariq Mohammad Abdullah Saleh as a commander of the brigade, indicating that Hadi refused the demands of Saleh, and that negotiations are still ongoing.

Hadi had appointed Tariq as a commander of the 37th Brigade in the southern governorate of Hadhramout, but he refused the decree and insisted to stay in his positions as a commander of the Special Forces and the 3rd Brigade.

On Tuesday, Saleh's half brother Mohammad Saleh Al-Ahmar handed over the command of the Air Forces to his successor Rashid Al-Janad after more than two weeks of refusal.

Saleh, who ruled Yemen for 33 years, appointed his relatives and supporters in senior ranks of the armed forces with. His elderly son, Ahmed and other allies remain in place as commanders of powerful military units.

Meanwhile,
...back at the sea battle, the Terror of the Baltic's career had come to an abrupt and watery end...
Rooters quoted Yemeni diplomatic sources as saying that Saleh will leave Yemen temporarily after Gulf states leaned on him to get out of the way of his successor to ease tension complicating efforts to stabilize the country.

According to Rooters, the diplomat expected Saleh to travel next week, probably to the United Arab Emirates, to allow recently elected President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi to rule unhindered by his predecessor.

Yemeni media sources stated that Russia has agreed to host Saleh accused of opposition leaders of sparking impediments and problems to his successor.

Two Police Shot Dead in Algeria's Kabylie Region
[An Nahar] Gunmen in Algeria's restive Kabylie region on Monday rubbed out two coppers and seriously maimed two others, less than two weeks ahead of legislative polls, a security official said.

The four were patrolling on the outskirts of Mekla town when another vehicle approached. The attackers "opened fire with Kalashnikov rifles and left them no chance to fire back. Two were killed and two were seriously maimed", the official said on condition of anonymity.

The attackers managed to get away and the victims were taken to a health center in Mekla, a small town of around 20,000 inhabitants close to the regional capital blood-stained Tizi Ouzou and some 100 kilometers (60 miles) east of Algiers.

On April 10, a kaboom killed a soldier and maimed another while the military was combing a region north of blood-stained Tizi Ouzou known to harbor bully boy Islamist groups.

Somalia's Al Shabaab Allied with Al Qaeda in Kenya
(Sh. M. Network) --The militant group Al-Shabaab said it has allied with Al Qaeda in a drive to establish an Islamic state in Somalia and fight for Muslims across East Africa, offering a fresh test for U.S.-backed African peacekeepers struggling to defend a weak Somali government.

In an Arabic audio message posed Monday on Al shabab internet forum, the leader of Al shabab Sheik Mukhtar Abu Zubeyr said that both the militants in Kenya and Somalia had agreed, to connect the horn of Africa jihad to the one led by Al Qaeda.

Sheik Ahmed Iman, the leader of Islamic movement inKenyaalso said that the group is happy to merger with Al shabab in Somalia, saying that they will continue carrying out attacks inKenya.

It isn't clear whether this new resolution will result in funding or training from Al Qaeda, or even if it will lead to an official endorsement from the global terror group. At the very least, the statement signals a tightening embrace with foreign fighters who have been supporting Al Shabaab's efforts to topple the Somali government.

AQIM to 'Free Brit' if Qatada Let Go Where he Wants
[An Nahar] Islamist hard boyz have offered to free a British-South African hostage if London allows radical holy man Abu Qatada to choose a country for his extradition, U.S. monitoring service SITE said.

Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) also threatened that Britannia would "open the door of evil" unto its country and people should it send the imam back to his native Jordan where he faces jail, the report said.

AQIM -- al-Qaeda's North African franchise -- has been holding Stephen Malcolm and two other Western men hostage since abducting them last November in the northern Mali desert city of Timbuktu.

Britannia has been trying to deport Abu Qatada for more than six years, arguing he is a threat to national security, to Jordan, where the holy man was convicted in 1998 in absentia of involvement in terror attacks.

But his removal has in the past been blocked by the European Court of Human Rights, which cited the risk that evidence obtained from torture would be used against him on his return to Jordan.

The court is now considering the latest appeal by the holy man.

The SITE report said AQIM had offered a deal, "to release a hostage if the British government allows radical holy man Abu Qatada al-Filistini the opportunity to choose a country for his extradition".

The group had declared on jihadist forums on Sunday "that it has followed Abu Qatada's case for years, and that Britannia will open the 'door of evil' unto its country and citizens should it extradite him to Jordan".

"The group said that it will release Stephen Malcolm, who has dual British and South African nationality, if Britannia will extradite Abu Qatada to a country involved in the Arab Spring or to any country he chooses," SITE said.

The other hostages taken on November 25 were Nils Joan Viktor Gustafson, a Swede, and Jacobus Nicolo Ruke, a Dutch national. AQIM released a picture of the three men in December.

Army Detains Iraqi Woman Linked to Abduction of Two Saudis
[An Nahar] The Lebanese army announced on Monday that an Iraqi woman, who was a complicit in the kidnapping of two Saudi nationals in Leb, was placed in durance vile.
Book 'er, Mahmoud!
That's what I always say: Churchy la femme.
"The army intelligence bureau tossed in the clink
I ain't sayin' nuttin' widdout me mout'piece!
Batoul Darwish Habib al-Mansouri, who confessed to luring (the Saudis) into an apartment in Doha al-Hoss (in southern Beirut) to financially blackmail them," said a communique issued by the army.

The two Saudis Tawfiq and Abdullah al-Shaqaqeen were held and tortured for eight days by a four-member gang, Saudi Ambassador Ali Awadh Asiri said on Wednesday.

The Internal Security Forces had previously tossed in the clink
I ain't sayin' nuttin' widdout me mout'piece!
two members of the gang, while the kingpin's whereabouts remain unknown.

The abductors demanded a large ransom in exchange for their release.

The army statement noted that al-Mansouri was referred to the competent judiciary.

Asiri urged all Saudis in Leb to stay "only in well-known hotels and stay away from private apartments," and called on visitors to register with the embassy upon their arrival in Beirut.

He also warned Saudis to stay away from Leb's border areas.

Pan-Arab daily al-Hayat had reported that an Iraqi woman received the two Saudis on April 16 as one of them had met her during a previous visit to Syria a few months ago.

They moved to an apartment in Doha al-Hoss, which the woman allegedly said she had rented for herself, it said.

Later, three Iraqi men broke into the apartment claiming that they were members of the ISF and tried to blackmail the Saudi men by taking naked pictures of one of them and demanding a large amount of money in exchange for their release.

Military Committee Facing Problems In Yemen Capital
[Yemen Post] The military committee in charge with restoring stability and maintaining security failed to reopen Sanaa-Marib road as it continued to remove security disorders inside Yemen's capital Sanaa on Sunday.

Tribal sources were quoted by News Yemen as saying the committee arrived early today in the Thawma area but it could not reopen the road which was closed during the escalating popular uprising last year.

Many military and tribal checkpoints were set up along the road including those controlled by the Republican Guard. Pro-revolution sources said they removed their checkpoints but returned them after the Republican Guard refused to remove its own.

Separately, the National Authority for Metrology and Aviation was handed the building of Yemenia Airways in the district of al-Hasaba, which was damaged and occupied during the battles between the Republican Guard and the tribal fighters loyal to Sadeq al-Ahmer of Hashid in 2011.

The committee removed all barricades and war positions in this district and nearby areas on Saturday. Fierce battles took place last year between the tribal fighters and the Republican Guard, with hundreds from both sides killed and injured.

Public offices were occupied by the tribal fighters but they have been given back to the government.

Since it was formed few months ago, the military committee has made strides after the 2011 turmoil, mainly in the capital Sanaa and the southern Taiz province.

Still, more efforts are needed to return the situation to normal in the country at a time when unruly tribal gunnies and checkpoints are continuing in main cities.

Iran Slams U.S. Pastor's Burning of Quran
[An Nahar] Iran on Monday slammed a U.S. pastor's burning of a Koran, calling it provocative and demanding U.S. authorities take action to prevent any recurrence.

Iran's foreign ministry said in a statement carried by the official IRNA news agency that it "strongly condemns this ridiculous, insulting and provoking act by a so-called American priest in overt contempt of the holy Koran."

The condemnation was in reaction to a Saturday ceremony in which Florida Pastor Terry Jones
...a Florida preacher of no particular distinction other than his willingness to occasionally set fire to a koran. This results in his getting his name in the papers and in attacks of the vapors in Teheran and places like that...
set fire to the Moslem holy book and a depiction of the prophet Mohammed to protest Iran's imprisonment of an Iranian Christian clergyman, Yusef Nadarkhani.

The act was broadcast online in a YouTube video that climaxed with Jones and a handful of followers repeating the U.S. oath of allegiance as the Koran burned.

Jones, who rebuffed a U.S. Defence Department request to desist out of fear for U.S. troops' safety abroad, was behind a March 2011 burning of the Koran by his assistant that triggered violence in northern Afghanistan in which at least 12 people were killed.

Iran's foreign ministry said the latest burning was the result of "Islamophobia"
...the irrational fear that Moslems will act the way they usually do...
in the West.

It said the world was "awaiting a quick, serious and frank response by the U.S. government to this act so it is never repeated."

The Grand Turk
Dear Ulama: Heaven Is Not Your Pr0n Fantasy!
Visiting Denmark seven years after the Danish cartoon crisis, Professor Mehmet Görmez, head of the Religious Affairs Directorate, spoke these words of wisdom:

- We must further support non-Moslems living with us side by side... We must have even friendlier relations with our neighbors who write racist messages on mosque walls in the West.

- [Non-Moslem] minorities and their churches [in Moslem lands] are entrusted to Moslems.

- The [violent] incidents [targeting Christians] in the Middle East in the aftermath of the Arab Spring are the biggest stain on Islamic civilization.

- We must grant freedom to the church in the East as much as we want freedom for the mosque in the West.

- Restrictions, humiliation and insults against the church should upset all of us [Moslems].

Professor Görmez is a Moslem theologian. But he is not the only one. Another well-known Moslem theologian is Ali Rıza Demirci, father of the Justice and Development Party's (AKP) Beyoğlu, Istanbul, mayor, Ahmet Misbah Demircan. The elder Mr. Demircan's popular blog features his "scientific" work published in volumes of books.

One of his masterpieces is the "Sexual Life According to Islam," a two-volume book published in 1984. Here are some excerpts from that book which can be downloaded even today from Mr. Demircan's popular blog:

- In heaven there will be no bachelors.

- Every man [residing in the lowest circle of heaven] will be given 72 women per day. A fully faithful Moslem will be given 100 virgins per day with whom he will have sex all day long. Women in heaven will become virgins immediately after having sex with men.

- Every man in heaven will be given the [sexual] power of 100 men.

- Every person in heaven will return to the age of 33.

- Women will be given to men who died in the name of religion.

- Men in heaven will have a permanent erection.

- Every man in heaven will have sex with his wife and angelic girls all day long.

I wanted to ask Mr. Demircan the ulama if women should be faithful Moslems only to enter heaven and "be given to men as sex slaves," or if we pray for his or my or other people's mothers, wives and sisters so that they go to heaven "for that!" Is this what Mr. Demircan really wishes for the female members of his family? I would not. And why will people in heaven return to the age of 33 and not 23? What about the faithful who died at the age of 8, 12, 18, 29 and went to heaven? Why would they have to age as a reward?

The trouble is not about the too visible discrepancy between the golden words of Mr. Görmez the ulama and the eccentric prophesies of Mr. Demircan the ulama. It is about the choice of the average pious Moslem: Will the faithful observe Mr. Görmez's teachings or Mr. Demircan's? Whose words would appeal more to the faithful? There is empirical evidence to guess.

Ironically, on the day the newsmakers reported Mr. Görmez's words of knowledge, another news story told us which ulama even educated Turks would choose to listen to more.

A thousand people gathered in Edirne to form "a human chain of brotherhood," in honor of the grandiose mosque in the city, Selimiye, led by Gov. Gökhan Sözer. Among the invitees was a priest representing the Bulgarian Orthodox Church who wanted to take the front line with the governor and the Moslem mufti of the city. The governor simply refused to let the priest in, citing "Bulgarian discrimination against Moslems in Bulgaria."

And just yesterday the newspapers reported that the younger Mr. Demircan had sent a 1 million-Turkish Lira (approximately $575,000) fine to a Catholic church in Istanbul. The mayor promised corrective action, but the unlucky church's priest had already asked the million dollar question: Would the municipality send the same fine to a mosque?

Apparently, Professor Görmez's teachings do not appeal to Turkish officials. And there are no means to know if Mr. Demircan's teachings would. But the possible truth just makes me laugh...

If my math is correct that would be roughly one virgin every 15 minutes, hence the permanent erection. Not much time left for gardening or watching sports. :-(

One Person Wounded as Syrian Forces Open Fire at Skiers in Mount Hermon
[An Nahar] A Lebanese man was maimed on Monday when Syrian troops shot up skiers in Mount Hermon in the Rashayya district, reported the National News Agency.

It said that Antoine al-Hajj was shot in the shoulder, while three of his lover companions were left unhurt in the incident.

The Red Thingy immediately reached the scene and transported al-Hajj to the government hospital in Rashayya.

Investigations are underway with his lover companions to determine the details of the incident.

This is not the first time that Syrian troops open fire towards the Lebanese border.

Shooting incidents have frequently been reported in the border area of al-Qaa in the North where Syrian troops had repeatedly infiltrated the area in pursuit of what it called "armed terrorist groups".
