Economy
Millennails Worse off the Parents - Unexpectedly
Baby boomers: Your millennial children are worse off than you.

With a median household income of $40,581, millennials earn 20 percent less than boomers did at the same stage of life, despite being better educated, according to a new analysis of Federal Reserve data by the advocacy group Young Invincibles.
Maybe there is a connection in that last statement?
The analysis released Friday gives concrete details about a troubling generational divide that helps to explain much of the anxiety that defined the 2016 election. Millennials have half the net worth of boomers. Their home ownership rate is lower, while their student debt is drastically higher.
See the pattern?
At Brick and Bones in Dallas' Deep Ellum, bar manager Ian Brooks, 24, said he probably earned a bit less than his parents did at the same age, but he said his college debt tilted the equation in their favor.
Everybody should go to college! We can finance it for you! You're a special snowflake!
"It's almost, like, a scam," he said of college costs these days. "You can come out of school $130,000 in debt."
Some old-time high schools taught basic financial planning, balancing your checkbook, and other old-fashioned ideas like that.
Brooks chose not to finish pursuing a business degree in college, realizing he could learn and get paid instead of paying to learn. "I thought I would be further along," Brooks said. "But as they say, tragedy builds character."
Maybe I'll go to his bar and buy him a drink.
Education does help boost incomes. But the median college-educated millennial with student debt is earning only slightly more than a baby boomer without a degree did in 1989.
Anybody compare STEM graduates with SJW snowflakes?
The homeownership rate for this age group dipped to 43 percent from 46 percent in 1989, although the rate has improved for millennials with a college degree relative to boomers.
I wonder if that crushing college debt has anything to do with that?
The median net worth of millennials is $10,090 ‐ 56 percent less than it was for boomers.
Since they don't own homes due to - I wonder what?
Don't go all schadenfreude yet. The author wants you to be afraid - very afraid - for the millennials.
The declining fortunes of millennials could impact boomers who are retired or on the cusp of retirement. Payroll taxes from millennials helps to finance the Social Security and Medicare benefits that many boomers receive ‐ programs that Trump has said won't be subject to spending cuts.
Spending cuts, no. But watch for no cost of living increases, another increase in the age at which one can start taking benefits without penalty, taxes on other earnings and on other pension payments including IRAs... and an increased take from the paychecks of the young to support their elders. Our bar manager doesn't know that FICA is higher than it was in his parents' and grandparents' day, and who will tell him?

Bob Woodward: ‘Trump's Right' ‐ Intel Community Has Treated Him Like ‘Garbage' [VIDEO]
[Daily Caller] Bob Woodward backed Donald Trump in his ongoing feud against the U.S. intelligence community during a panel discussion on "Fox News Sunday."

"In Trump’s mind, he knows the old adage, ’once a C.I.A. man, always a C.I.A. man,’ and no one came out and said those people shouldn’t be saying those things," the Washington Post’s famed editor explained. "So act two is the briefing when this dossier is put out."

"I’ve lived in this world for 45 years where you get things and people make allegations," he continued. "That is a garbage document."

"It never should have been presented as part of an intelligence briefing, as you suggested -- other channels have the White House counsel give it to Trump’s incoming White House counsel."

Woodward emphatically stated the president-elect is "right to be upset about that, and I think if you look at the real chronology and the nature of the battle here, those intelligence chiefs who were the best we’ve had, who were terrific and have done great work -- they made a mistake here."

"When people make a mistake, they should apologize."

Head Klingon warns Trump to watch what he says, be careful on Russia
When they play politics, they are politicians -- just unpaid ones.
[Reuters] Outgoing CIA Director John Brennan on Sunday issued a stern parting rebuke to Republican Donald Trump days before he assumes the U.S. presidency, advising him not to absolve Russia for its recent actions and warning him to watch what he says.

Brennan's comments, in an interview on "Fox News Sunday," laid bare the simmering tensions between the president-elect and the intelligence community he has criticized and is on the verge of commanding.

The CIA director said Trump needs to be mindful about his off-the-cuff remarks once he takes the oath of office on Friday, alluding to his penchant for making broad pronouncements on Twitter.

"Spontaneity is not something that protects national security interests and so therefore when he speaks or when he reacts, just make sure he understands that the implications and impact on the United States could be profound," Brennan said.

"It's more than just about Mr. Trump. It's about the United States of America."

Trump Ensnares Media in Yet Another Fake News Boondoggle
ZH..yeah, I know. Just too sweet
The media was rife with 'I told you so' headlines yesterday, after reports from more unnamed sources said the first order of business for the Trump administration was to hold a summit with Vladimir Putin, in Iceland, just like Reagan did with Gorbachev, circa 1986.

The headlines were smug and the Twitterati of newly born left wing militarist war mongers were resplendent with calls for martial law or protests or anything that could stop Donald Trump, an obvious traitor against America -- a revolting person of low qualities who enjoys to be urinated upon by Russian hookers.

The only problem with that narrative, as touching as it may seem, is that it's completely false. According to Trump's press secretary, it's all fake news.

Steve Harvey to Work With Trump Administration on Inner City Policy
[Breitbart] Actor, comedian, and Family Feud host Steve Harvey met with President-elect Donald Trump on Friday at Trump Tower in Manhattan.

"I stepped from behind my microphone and I came and talked to the guy who is going to be the 45th president," Harvey told reporters about his meeting with Trump, whom he said he found "both congenial and sincere."

Harvey said he plans to partner with Trump’s Department of Housing and Urban Development nominee Dr. Ben Carson on restoring America’s inner cities.

"Trump wants to help with the situations in the inner cities so he immediately got Dr. Ben Carson on the phone to put us together to begin dialog in looking at programs and housing to help our inner cities and he’s very open to my mentoring efforts across the country," Harvey said.

"I walked away feeling like I had just talked with a man who genuinely wants to make a difference in this area," he added. "I feel that something really great could come out of this... I would sit with him anytime."

Europe
More on the U.S. Armored Brigade deployment to Poland (Video)
[Defense Blog] The recent arrival in Poland of the U.S. Army, 4th Infantry Division’s 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team "marks a significant moment in European deterrence and defense," Army Gen. Curtis M. Scaparrotti, commander of U.S. European Command, said in a Eucom news release.

That was reported by press service of the United States Army.

In the release, Scaparrotti, who wears a second hat as NATO supreme allied commander-Europe, commented on the Fort Carson, Colorado-based brigade’s movement from Germany into Poland for Operation Atlantic Resolve.

"I would like to thank our allies and commend them on this historic moment, Scaparrotti said. "The European infrastructure and integrated support has enabled our force to rapidly be ready and postured should they need to deter Russian aggression."

The American brigade "joins regional forces already committed to responsiveness and security; it is great to see our Army at the front, integrated with the combined and joint air and naval forces of the United States, our allies and partners," the general said.

The arrival of the 3rd ABCT’s 3,500 soldiers and its equipment marks the beginning of the presence of such a unit and back-to-back rotations of U.S. troops and equipment in Europe, Pentagon Press Secretary Peter Cook told reporters at a Jan. 5 news briefing.

"This effort is part of our European Reassurance Initiative to maintain persistent, rotational presence of air, land, and sea forces in Central and Eastern Europe," Cook said.

Video depicts rail yard arrival and off-loading. A very dangerous undertaking if not closely supervised.

Russia unveils new T-90M «Proryv-3» main battle tank
[Defense Blog] Russia has unveiled the latest version of the Russian T-90 main battle tank called T-90M «Proryv-3». That was reported Russian military expert Alexei Khlopotov.

The T-90M «Proryv-3» is a modernized version of Russian main battle tank. The upgraded tank will eventually replace the aging T-90 and T-90A tanks that are still in service with the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation.

"We have about 400 tanks, set in the early 2000s. It’s been almost 12-15 years. They need to be updated. Therefore, we consider the issue of modernization of the tank fleet, "- said Deputy Russian Defense Minister Yuri Borisov at RAE-2015 in Nizhny Tagil.

The T-90M tank has 125mm smooth-bore cannon that can fire guided missiles as well as shells. This tank is operated by a crew of three, including commander, gunner and driver and have new automatic target tracker and fire control computer. The tank powered by a new engine, developing 1 300 hp. Combat weight ‐ 50 tons and ground clearance ‐ 450 mm.

The T-90M has new composite armor as well as built-in Relikt explosive reactive armor (ERA) in place of the previous Kontakt-5. The «Proryv-3» is fitted with side skirts with built-in Relikt ERA. It provides protection against tandem warheads and reduces penetration of APFSDS rounds by over 50%. There is also a Shtora-1 countermeasures system, which significantly reduces the chance of being hit by enemy anti-tank guided weapons with semi-automatic guidance. As usually this tank is fitted with NBC protection and automatic fire suppression systems.

Mexico warns Trump on tariffs: We'll respond 'immediately'
[Clinton News Network] Mexico's economy minister sent Donald Trump a fighting message: We will retaliate right away if you hit us with a "major border tax."

"It's very clear that we have to be prepared to immediately be able to neutralize the impact of a measure of that nature," economy minister Ildefonso Guajardo said Friday on a Mexican news show.

Guajardo also predicted that Trump's threat of a 35% tariff against Mexico, if carried out, would result in a "global recession" because it would inhibit companies from producing outside the U.S.

"It would be a problem for the entire world," Guajardo warned. A Trump tariff "will have a wave of impacts that can take us into a global recession," Guajardo said, speaking in Spanish.

In recent weeks, Trump has zeroed in on companies manufacturing in Mexico and selling products in the United States, threatening them with a "major border tax" of 35%.

-Signs, Portents, and the Weather-
Trump continues to slam Lewis, calls cities 'burning and crime infested.'
[WASHINGTONEXAMINER] President-elect Trump continued his attacks on both civil rights icon Rep. John Lewis and the country's inner cities Saturday evening, calling them "burning and crime infested."

"Congressman John Lewis should finally focus on the burning and crime infested inner-cities of the U.S. I can use all the help I can get!" Trump tweeted.

Trump and Lewis have been at odds for the last day and a half after Lewis said in an interview he views Trump as an illegitimate president due to Russian interference in the election.

Trump responded Saturday morning with tweets calling Lewis' district in "horrible shape and falling apart," despite the fact that Lewis represents much of Atlanta including wealthy neighborhoods and the nation's busiest airport.

Trump also called Lewis, famous for being one of the leaders of the March on Washington and the march from Selma to Montgomery where civil rights activists were bloodied and beaten by coppers, "all talk, talk, talk ‐ no action or results."

Lewis was lauded by Democrats and Republicans alike in the wake of Trump's earlier tweets on Saturday and has long been seen as above reproach in the halls of Congress. Trump showed no such deference Saturday.
For your full enjoyment, dear Reader, Besoeker gave us a write-up of the earlier tweets:
Trump to Lewis: You should talk less and focus on fixing your crime-infested district

[HOT AIR] And to think, I was worried that he might be easily baited by Lewis’s criticism of him.

Did Lewis freelance his attack on Trump’s legitimacy or was it plotted with Democratic leaders in hopes of drawing a response, to strategic ends? This is exactly the kind of headline the party may have been hoping for:

Lewis is the perfect person to lead the left’s attack on Trump since he’s a deeply partisan pol who’s typically treated as nonpartisan. He’s admired by people in both parties for his civil-rights-era activism, which gives him a degree of moral authority beyond partisanship that no one else in Congress enjoys. In practice, though, he’s been a reliable liberal as a congressman and a usefully vicious critic of Republicans for his party. The 2008 campaign ended with Lewis accusing John McCain of "sowing the seeds of hatred and division" and comparing him explicitly to George Wallace. Five years later, McCain was still vowing that he’ll never forgive him for it. For the left’s purposes, "John Lewis" is basically a synecdoche for "the civil-rights movement." Criticize him, for whatever reason and no matter how justified, and you’re criticizing social progress writ large -- exactly the sort of perception Democrats want to create about Trump.

"North Carolina NAACP President Rev. William Barber weighed in on the brewing feud between Rep. John Lewis (D-GA) and President-elect Donald Trump after Lewis said Trump was not a “legitimate president” and Trump fired back with criticisms of Lewis for his work in Georgia.

Barber praised Lewis, saying he “stands in the tradition” of the prophets, Jesus and Martin Luther King Jr.

“There’s a great deal of illegitimacy to [Trump]. I can tell you lastly, Joy, over 10,000 clergy and activists, we wrote him and asked to meet with him to discuss things with him and they still have not responded. So, I stand with John Lewis as he stands in the tradition of the prophets, the tradition of Jesus and the tradition of Martin Luther King to say what is right even when people may not want to hear it,” Barber said."

Ringling Bros. circus to close after 146 years
[YAHOO] After 146 years, the curtain is coming down on "The Greatest Show on Earth." The owner of the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus told The News Agency that Dare Not be Named that the show will close forever in May.

The iconic American spectacle was felled by a variety of factors, company executives say. Declining attendance combined with high operating costs, along with changing public tastes and prolonged battles with animal rights groups all contributed to its demise.

"There isn't any one thing," said Kenneth Feld, chairman and CEO of Feld Entertainment. "This has been a very difficult decision for me and for the entire family."

The company broke the news to circus employees Saturday night after shows in Orlando and Miami.

Ringling Bros. has two touring circuses this season and will perform 30 shows between now and May. Major stops include Atlanta, Washington, Philadelphia, Boston and Brooklyn. The final shows will be in Providence, Rhode Island, on May 7 and in Uniondale, New York, at the Nassau County Coliseum on May 21.

-Lurid Crime Tales-
Andrea Bocelli backs out of singing at Trump's inauguration after receiving death threats
[Daily Mail, Where America Gets Its News] Opera star Andrea Bocelli backed out of singing at Donald Trump's inauguration after receiving death threats, The Mail on Sunday has learnt.
The revelation came as another singer – Broadway legend Jennifer Holliday – last night pulled out of the President-elect's festivities after being threatened and branded an 'Uncle Tom'.
Bocelli's a blind singer, not an opera star, even though he's recorded studio versions of about a dozen operas. He regularly does charity concerts, and I understand he's a very nice man personally.
When blind tenor Bocelli announced he would not sing at this Friday's celebration, it was widely reported it was because fans had said they would boycott his concerts and records.
I greatly doubt that would have happened.
But a source said the 58-year-old had been determined to 'press ahead' and sing but had pulled out on the advice of his security team after receiving threats to his life.
... which is more believable.
A source close to Bocelli, a friend of Trump's, said: 'Andrea is very sad to be missing the chance to sing at such a huge global event but he has been advised it is simply not worth the risk.'

Inauguration Protesters Plan To Destroy Property And Disrupt Balls
[Daily Caller] On the day of President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration protesters are planning an anti-capitalist march, road blockades and disruptions to inauguration balls. The protests will likely include property destruction, a source with intimate knowledge of the protest plans told The Daily Caller Friday.

The blockades are not limited to roads but will also be at every security checkpoint, the source said. The source added that the protesters blockading each checkpoint will represent a different liberal cause such as climate change or money in politics.

A group called #DisruptJ20 is the most active in the planned protests for the inauguration.

Organizers for #DisruptJ20 are planning to kick off the inauguration protests on Jan. 18 with a gay dance party outside of Vice President-elect Mike Pence’s Chevy Chase, MD home.

#6  From M. Murcek's link:

But the Post’s early reporting on the “firing” of General Schwartz contains no statements from the Trump transition office and also leaves out key points such as the fact that the general of the D.C. National Guard traditionally supplies his letter of resignation to every new president who is about to take office.

Subsequent to the publishing of the paper’s story making Trump appear incompetent, news emerged that the incoming Trump administration offered to let General Schwartz keep his position through inauguration day, but it was the general himself who refused the offer, preferring instead to quit at 12 noon on January 20, the hour Trump takes his oath of office.

The general then ran straight to the media to “argue his case in the press,” as a recent Fox News report noted.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Abbas: We May Rescind Recognition of Israel If Trump Moves US Embassy to Jerusalem
[Breitbart] Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said in an interview with French newspaper Le Figaro published on Saturday that should Donald Trump move the US Embassy to Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, the Palestinian will no longer recognize the State of Israel.

"I wrote to President Elect Trump and asked him not to (move the embassy)," Abbas said in the interview. "Not only will this action destroy America’s legitimacy to fill any sort of position in a solution to this conflict, it will also destroy the Two State Solution."

Trump, who will be sworn in as President of the United States on Friday, has said previously that he intends to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of the State of Israel, and move the embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem ‐ a promise nearly every single other president elect has made. The Palestinians are against this, and view this as a detrimental, unilateral action, and that Jerusalem’s status must be negotiated in a final status agreement.

Abbas continued in his interview, stating that if Trump moves the embassy in any case, "we will have several options, and we are talking about them with other Arab countries."

"Cancelling our recognition of the State of Israel is one of the possibilities, although I hope we won’t come to this point. I hope the opposite will happen ‐ that we will succeed in working with the next US government."

The Le Figaro article was published one day before the Paris Peace Conference is set to take place, and on the same day that Abbas visits the Vatican to appeal to the Pope to put pressure on the Americans to not move their embassy to Jerusalem.

Rand Paul: Anyone Who Leaked Trump Intel Rpt to Press Should Go to Jail
[Breitbart] Wednesday on Fox News Channel’s "Your World," Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) told host Neil Cavuto it was his view that if it were a U.S. intelligence agency that leaked an unsubstantiated dossier on President-elect Donald Trump and his relationship with Russia to the press, there should be repercussions, including prosecution and possible jail time.

"What I would say is that if there is private information that someone is blackmailing a public figure and the public figure or someone takes it to the intelligence agencies, you would think it would be private. And really, this is so important that I think whoever leaked it should be prosecuted. Someone should go to jail if this was an intelligence agency head talked to the media, they should go to jail. If it was the Obama administration, they should go to jail."

Paul offered his reason, saying such blackmail efforts may go unreported in the future.

The Grand Turk
Turkey arrests soldiers for 'helping terror group'
Turkey has arrested five soldiers in connection with a deadly suicide attack on the military claimed by a Kurdish radical group in the central city of Kayseri, state media said Friday.

A bus - carrying low-ranking privates and non-commissioned officers - was attacked after leaving the commando headquarters in the city to take the off-duty soldiers on a shopping trip on December 17. Fourteen soldiers died in the explosion and dozens were wounded.

The soldiers, who were based at the same headquarters, are accused of "helping a terrorist organisation" and "leaking military information", including the time the bus would leave, state-run Anadolu Agency said.

The attack in Kayseri, an industrial hub in the heartland of Anatolia, was one of many in Turkey in a bloody 2016.

A "revenge squad" from the Kurdistan Freedom Falcons (TAK), seen as a radical offshoot of the outlawed PKK, targeted the off-duty conscripts and "successfully carried out the attack", the group said in a statement published by the pro-PKK Firat news agency.

The shadowy organisation is seen by some analysts as more extreme than the PKK although the Turkish government says it is merely a front for the better-known group. The TAK has claimed a string of bombings in Turkey over the last year, including a December double bombing near the Besiktas football stadium that left 46 people dead.

#3  Look up the history. The lady strikes me as in the mold of Judith, who fed the attacking general on salty cheese and much wine until he fell asleep, then hammered a tent peg through his temple. Not to mention the heretical position of all Islam, decrying the years of pain their prophet suffered thereafter, as if it were not Allah's will that he experience every minute of that pain without surcease. It seems reasonable to assume Allah did not approve of that particular conquest and its outcome, else as the lady said, he would have not allowed her poison to take effect.

Two killed, several injured in Mogadishu blast
Two civilians were killed, and many more others wounded in a bomb explosion in Mogadishu, the latest in string of increasing attacks in war-riddled capital, police and witnesses said.

The blast has resulted from a remotely detonated bomb targeted Somali security forces at Ex-control Balad in Mogadishu. No group has yet claimed responsibility for the deadly attack.

Afterwards, Somali security forces have sealed off the scene near the bomb site, and launched an investigation into the incident shortly after the perpetrators fled from the area.

Two LHWs gang-raped in Gujrat village
[DAWN] GUJRAT: Two lady health workers (LHWs) posted at a Basic Health Unit (BHU) in Bheelwal were gang-raped by four faceless myrmidons, according to information gathered on Saturday.

The gangsters also took away Rs8,000 and other valuables but it could not be confirmed whether they had come to the BHU for robbery.

The incident took place at the public health facility within the Tanda police jurisdiction on Dec 29. It was kept under wraps until the women victims approached Gujrat District Police Officer Sohail Zafar Chatha on Friday.

It is said that there was a third lady health worker at the heath facility. The severity of the assault on her is not yet clear although it has been learnt that the gang of four men had kept her locked in a room for a considerable period of time.

Speaking to Dawn, the Gujrat DPO confirmed the gang-rape and said police had traced the four suspects who would be placed in durance vile
Maw! They're comin' to get me, Maw!
soon. He said the two LHWs would reside in the residential rooms of the BHU and they had informed their superiors about the ghastly incident but continued to work. The Tanda police had initially registered a robbery case under Section 392 of the Pakistain Penal Code as it was complained that the gangsters had taken away Rs8,000 and valuables such as the UPS system and battery, a biometric machine and a mobile phone after locking the watchmen in a room.

#1  You may not have noticed a map recently, but Gujarat is a State in India and NOT in Pakistan.

Filing a Law in the Penal Code of Pakistan? You are off by about 800 miles at a rough guess. Rupees are a currency used in India AND Pakistan so perhaps that confused you.
At any rate I am a little confused...a spelling thing off by one letter A.

But Gujarat is NOT in Pakistan. Gujarat is roughly the California of India. Now there is a Bhilvada in Gujarat, could that be the place?

A taluka is a Police and tax district designation..Police district might be the way to translate that.

Now there IS a Gujrat in Punjab not in Gujarat. And Punjab IS in Pakistan. in which case who cares if Moslems rape Moslems. Fine, Moslems will rape your dog.
As long as it wasn't India, I am OK with that.

Couple that with the reference to the penal colde of Pakistan, and the smart money would bet that this took place in Pakistan, where such behaviour is only somewhat more common nowadays than in India. Today's India is in so many ways not the India Mr. Wife knew so well in 1990, and even less the India where a girlfriend of mine spent a month sleeping unmolested on the beach of Bombay -- as it was then -- while she waited for the mail to deliver money and airplane tickets from home after she was invited to leave the novitiate of Mother Theresa's order.

Two soldiers and one militant leader die in fresh Ganfouda battle
[Libya Herald] An Islamist commander is reported to have died along with two soldiers as the Libyan National Army renewed its assault on the Ganfouda terrorist enclave in Benghazi.

Fowzi Al-Fidi, whose family come from Gwarsha, was described by one army source as a commander in the Benghazi Revolutionaries’ Shoura Council and by another as an Ansar Al-Sharia leader. He was wounded by shrapnel yesterday in an air strike and is said to have died today.

However in today’s fighting, which included further air strikes, two members of the Saiqa Special Forces were also killed and a number of others wounded .

The LNA is claiming that it has occupied more areas of Ganfouda squeezing the militants into a yet smaller area. The terrorists remain cut off from the beach across which supplies and reinforcements were brought from Misrata until at least November when the the LNA launched its major assault.

A dangerous approach
[DAWN] ARE we still too naive to determine our enemy? Certainly not, but only if we have common sense and we keep our eyes wide open. We must also keep in mind that the enemy is non-traditional, in the sense that it does not only want to encroach on our physical spaces, but also ideological, social, cultural and political ones, in order to disrupt the social fabric.

This enemy is more dangerous because it is internal; it lives within us and can hurt us from within. It can poison our thinking slowly, without being noticed. It wants to impose certain religious, ideological and social agendas against the collective will and order of the people. It employs violence to achieve its goals. Sometimes it only incites violence and creates an enabling environment for its violent ideological brothers.

The state has to take constitutional, legal and security measures to deal with its enemies. But when our state functionaries appear to have lost the ability to recognise the enemy within us, it can be inferred that the enemy has accomplished its job. Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan

Conditions on security assistance to Pakistan failed to yield results: Mattis
[DAWN] US defence secretary-designate James Mattis has warned that putting conditions on US security assistance to Pakistain has not always produced the desired results.

"Conditioning our security assistance has a mixed history in the case of Pakistain, but I will review all options if I am confirmed," Mr Mattis said at his confirmation hearing. "In particular, we should be aware of any behaviour that supports Pakistain-based murderous Moslem groups," he added.

This was a veiled reference to the argument, often made in the US capital, that sanctioning Pakistain has had negative effects. In the 1990s the United States slapped sweeping sanctions on Pakistain to prevent it from testing nuclear weapons.

Those who oppose sanctioning Pakistain point out that it did not prevent the country from going nuclear, mainly in response to similar tests by India, and reduced US engagement with the country allowed terrorism to flourish.

Mr Mattis, who appeared before the Senate panels on Thursday and Friday to explain the policies he would follow as the defence secretary, said he would consult the Senate Armed Services Committee before making any decision on attaching conditions to US security assistance to Pakistain.

Mr Mattis said he would work to build bridges with Pakistain and to restore the trust that has eroded in recent years. But, at the same time, he would also urge Islamabad to "neutralise" murderous Moslem groups that allegedly operate within its borders.

CM says centre’s reservation over seminaries ban will be removed
[DAWN] KARACHI: Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah has said the provincial government will address the reservations expressed by the Ministry of Interior over Sindh’s request to ban 94 seminaries under the anti-terrorism law.

"We’ll remove the reservations expressed by the MoI by giving complete information regarding the seminaries to recommend the federal government to enlist them in the first schedule," said Mr Shah while speaking to news hounds during his visit to the rain-hit parts of the city on Saturday.

Mr Shah was commenting on the media reports that the MoI had rejected the Sindh government request for imposing a ban on 94 religious seminaries in Sindh as well as in other provinces and Federally Administered Tribal Areas (Fata) on the grounds of incomplete information and insufficient evidence against those madressahs.

However,
a hangover is the wrath of grapes...
he added, his office had not yet received the reply of the MoI. "The reply has not yet reached me. Let the reply lands my office, we would address all the reservations raised by the federal government," he said, adding that his government’s recommendations were made on the basis of the reports of intelligence agencies.

In reply to a letter of the Sindh government, the interior ministry said action could not be taken against the seminaries due to ’lack of information and evidence’ against them. Besides, it was said, a number of those seminaries did not fall in of the jurisdiction of Sindh.

Abu Sayyaf releases two hostages
[Tempo] A South Korean captain and a Filipino crewman abducted by the Abu Sayyaf three months ago were released yesterday. Presidential Adviser on Peace Process Jesus Dureza reiterated the government's no ransom policy, but a military intelligence report said that R25 million was paid for the hostages' release.

Military spokesman Filemon Tan said the Moro National Liberation Front aided in the release of Korean captain Park Chung Hung and Glenn Alindajao. Abu Sayyaf sub-leader Alden Bagade reportedly turned over the hostages to MNLF representatives in Indanan, Sulu yesterday morning.

In a press briefing, Alindajao described the captives' three-month ordeal. He said that they walked endlessly from one place to another on an empty stomach and slept, most of the time, under trees in the middle of the forest. He recounted, "We were almost hopeless but I am thankful we were able to come home safely with the help of Sir (Jess) Dureza and the president for assisting us."

In October, armed men identifying themselves as Abu Sayyaf militants kidnapped the pair from a South Korean cargo ship, the first such attack on a large merchant vessel.

China-Japan-Koreas
Trump team: China "not to be allowed access" to South China Sea
Controversy surrounds the Trump administrations’s attitude towards China, with soon-to-be secretary of state Rex Tillerson warning Beijing this week that China would “not be allowed access” to its artificial islands in the South China Sea.

Asked if he supported the “One China” policy on Taiwan that has underpinned US relations with Beijing for decades, Trump said: “Everything is under negotiation including ‘One China’,” the Journal reported.

Trump caused offence in Beijing when he took a congratulatory telephone call from Taiwan’s president in the wake of his election victory – a breach of the “One China” protocol under which Washington agreed to withdraw diplomatic recognition of the island nation as part of a deal to open up relations with the mainland.

On Taiwan, he told the Journal: “We sold them $2bn of military equipment last year. We can sell them $2bn of the latest and greatest military equipment but we’re not allowed to accept a phone call. First of all it would have been very rude not to accept the phone call.”

During the election campaign Trump said he would label China a currency manipulator on the first day of taking office. The yuan has fallen steadily against the dollar in recent years, bringing accusations from the US that Beijing has deliberately forced its currency lower to gain a market advantage for its exports.

Trump told the Journal he would stop short of officially branding China a manipulator but was critical of Beijing’s financial policies and said: “Certainly they are manipulators”.

“Instead of saying: ‘We’re devaluating our currency,’ they say, ‘oh, our currency is dropping’. It’s not dropping. They’re doing it on purpose.

“Our companies can’t compete with them now because our currency is strong and it’s killing us,” Trump said.

Syrian regulars foil ISIS attack on Deir Ezzor
[al-Manar] Syrian army on Saturday thwarted an attack carried out by ISIL Takfiri terrorists in several areas in Deir Ezzor.

Military sources reported that heavy losses were inflicted upon the terrorists who first of all attack the eastern side of the city.

The militants then attacked the southern side and the northwestern side of Deir Ezzor’s airport, according to the source.

Backed by the Syrian air force, the army destroyed a tank and three vehicles belonging to the terrorists in al-Tharda Mountain.

But Asharq Al-Awsat Sez: ISIS launches attack on Deir Ezzor

ISIS militants launched their biggest attack in months on regime-held areas in the contested city of Deir al-Zor on Saturday, leaving dozens of dead, a war monitor said.

The militant group attacked the city from several sides, the Syrian government and opposition activists said.

At least six large explosions rocked the city since dawn as the militants clashed with the army and allied forces, the British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported.

Intense fighting broke out between regime troops and ISIS militants in the city and in the vicinity of a nearby military airport controlled by regime forces after the militants launched their multi-pronged attack starting from the area of Baghaliyeh near the northwestern tip of the city.

Syrian regime warplanes hit back against ISIS positions, the Observatory and state media said.

Syrian state news agency SANA said the army was repelling attacks by the ultra-hardline jihadist group along several frontlines, including around the military airport controlled by the regime.

ISIS shelling killed three people and wounded nine in residential regime-held districts, SANA reported.

The fighting and bombardment killed at least 12 government forces and 20 Islamic State fighters, the Observatory said.

Islamic State controls most of Deir al-Zor province, which borders Iraq, including more than half the city, and has besieged the remaining government-held areas of the city for nearly two years.

The Syrian regime and its Russian ally have made regular aid drops into the encircled zone, where about 200,000 people live, lacking food and medicine.

Deir al-Zor province links ISIS’ de facto capital in the Syrian city of Raqqa with territory controlled by the militant group in Iraq.

Don’t link Boko Haram with Islam, Ex-GrandKhadi advises Nigerians
Yeah, yeah, yadda yadda, whatever..
[VANGUARDNGR] A former GrandKhadi of the Kwara Sharia Court of Appeal, retired Justice Salihu Olountoyin-Mohammed, on Friday, urged the people not to link Boko Haram insurgency with lslam.
"No, no! Certainly not!"
The Jurist made the clarification in llorin during an interview.
It's... ummm... something else.
According to him, lslam as a religion that makes peace its cornerstone, adding that perpetrators of negative acts such as Boko Haram insurgents are not Muslims.
We've seen that, time and again. They're none of them Moslems, despite the turbans.
Salihu-Olountoyin, however, advised Muslims to always allow peace, unity, love, and goodness to fellow human being their guiding principle, regardless of religious or tribe or other inclinations.
"Oh, yasss. Of course. Tut tut, my good man!"
“The activities of Boko Haram insurgency are purely anti-Islam and unconstitutional, they are not part of lslamic law”, the ex-Grandkhadi said.
"...despite the number of muftis and other holy men they got running around."
He further advised Muslims to shun destructive tendencies, stating that no meaningful development could take place in an atmosphere of rancour, acrimony and hatred.
"It sez so in the Koran someplace. You could look it up. Ignore the parts about smiting the infidels."
The Jurist, however, advised Nigerians to be conscious of their security by reporting negative activities or suspicious movement in their domains to security operatives. Salihu-Olountoyin called on residents in the rural communities not to harbour unknown persons in their areas as part of measures to curb insurgency in the country to the barest minimum.

Beida government accuses Italy of violating Libyan sovereignty
[Libya Herald] In a sign of its growing annoyance with Italia over its cooperation with the Presidency Council and the Government of National Accord (GNA), the rival interim government in Beida this week accused the Italian navy of illegally entering Libya’s territorial waters. It claimed Italia was violating Libyan illusory sovereignty.

"An Italian military vessel loaded with soldiers and ammunition has entered Libyan territorial waters," said a note sent by the government in Beida to Libyan embassies abroad.

"It is a clear violation of the UN charter and a form of repeated aggression."

The vessel concerned is the San Giorgio, an Italian navy amphibious warship which is currently operating with the EU’s Operation Sophia against human trafficking in the Mediterranean from Libya.

Last October, 78 Libyan coastguard trainees joined the San Giorgio and the Dutch vessel Rotterdam to begin their instruction.

Italia has yet to comment on naval deployments, but the GNA in Tripoli

Spokesman for the Libyan navy Captain Ayub Gassem dismissed the allegations, saying that the ship in Libyan waters was involved in training.

Obama sez his family happy to leave WH, millions of Americans delighted as well
[Wash Times] In what is likely the final on-camera interview during his eight year stay at Washington’s most famous address, President Obama tells CBS that his family will be happy to be out of the White House come next weekend.

Security constraints and other factors appear to have worn thin after eight years, he said, noting that his wife Michelle and daughters Malia and Sasha are particularly eager to get on with their private lives.

"They’re ready to go. I mean, the girls, obviously, they are now of an age in which the constraints of Secret Service and bubbles and all that stuff has gotten pretty old. Michelle never fully took to the scrutiny. I mean, she’s thrived as a first lady, but it’s not her preference," Mr. Obama tells CBS "60 Minutes" in the interview, which is scheduled to air Sunday evening.

His wife was the "hardest sell" for a White House experience, Mr. Obama says.

"She never fully embraced being in the public spotlight. Which is ironic, given how good she is [at it]. I think having said that, she would acknowledge -- and I certainly feel-- that we just have a lot of memories here. You know, our kids grew up here. Some of our best friends have been here in this place," the president continues.

His wife is "glad" that their time at the White House is ebbing down to the last few days, Mr. Obama says.

Gunmen kidnap five students, two staff from Nigerian school: Police
Boko Haram or ordinary criminals? Boko Haram likes to kidnap students, but they historically went for larger numbers and schools in the Muslim north, as I recall.
[Ynet] Gunmen kidnapped five students and two staff, including a Turkish national, from an international school in Nigeria's southern state of Ogun, police said on Saturday.

The kidnappers, who kidnapped the six Nigerians and Turkish staff member late on Friday, have not made contact with police or school authorities and no arrest has been made, Ogun police front man Abimbola Oyeyemi said.

"We have deployed police operatives and are making serious efforts to release the victims unhurt and bring the culprits to book," he said.

In September, Ogun state police rescued two kidnapped Chinese nationals who were working for a quarry company.
I don't know accurate Nigeria Today is, but this is their headline:
Manhunt for 8 students, staff abducted at Turkish school in Ogun
Here is the school website, which looks like either a Gulenist or a Turkish government project.

Afghanistan
ISIS loyalists destroy 65 residences by fire in Nangarhar
The loyalists of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) terrorist group have torched at least 65 houses in eastern Nangarhar province of Afghanistan.

According to the local officials, the houses were torched in Kot district late on Friday night.
"The Sabbath is over, boys, now go drive some families out freeze to death in the bitter Afghan winter."
Provincial governor’s spokesman Ataullah Khogyani confirmed the incident and said at least 65 houses were set on fire but no loss of life has been reported.

Khogyani further added that the houses were abandoned when the loyalist of the terror group stormed into them in Baba Ghonda and Bar Sepai areas.

In the meantime, local officials in Kot district are saying that the ISISI loyalists have torched the houses after the residents of the area rejected to pledged allegiance to them.

The loyalists of the terror group have not commented regarding the report so far.

This comes as ISIS loyalists suffered heavy losses and casualties in the counter-terrorism operations in this province. Both the Afghan and US forces conducted regular strikes against the loyalists of the terror group in this province.

The increased raids, usually involving drone strikes, by the US forces followed a broader role granted by the Obama administration earlier last year. The broader role was granted amid concerns that the loyalists of the terror group are attempting to expand foothold in the country and turn the eastern Nangarhar province into a regional operational hub for its fighters.

26 die in fighting in al-Dhubab region in Yemen
ADEN, Yemen: At least 26 Yemeni combatants died in fresh clashes and an air strike as government forces advanced against Shiite Houthi rebels near a key shipping strait, medics and officials said Saturday.

A week-long assault by government forces and their allies aims to expel the Iran-backed Houthis from Dhubab region, close to the Bab Al-Mandab strait linking the Red Sea and Indian Ocean.

Twelve bodies of Houthi insurgents were taken early Saturday to a hospital in rebel-held Hodeida, a medical official said, adding that the facility received 23 others wounded.

He said the casualties were from clashes on Friday night in Dhubab.
An overnight air strike by a pro-government Arab coalition on a rebel assembly in Zaydiya, in Hodeida province, left another nine Houthis dead, a security official said.

The Red Sea port city of Hodeida lies some 200 kilometers (125 miles) north of Dhubab.

A medical official at a hospital in the southern city of Aden said five pro-government fighters were killed in overnight clashes around Dhubab and 14 others wounded.

Forces loyal to President Abedrabbo Mansour Hadi and allied fighters from the Popular Resistance have entered the town of Dhubab and seized its local government headquarters.

Popular Resistance commander Abdelrahman Al-Muharami said the loyalists had also recaptured large parts of Al-Omeri military base in mountains overlooking the coast.

“There are still some rebel pockets” in the base, he said.
The government and its allies in the Saudi-led coalition recaptured Bab Al-Mandab strait in October 2015, pushing the rebels further north.

But the rebels still control nearly all of Yemen’s Red Sea coast to the north, posing what the coalition says is a threat to international shipping.

Yemen’s conflict has killed more than 7,400 people and wounded nearly 40,000 since it escalated with the coalition intervention in March 2015 after the Houthis seized large swathes of the country, according to the United Nations.

In another bid to reassert government authority, Prime Minister Ahmed bin Dagher said Saturday that his administration will start transferring salaries to state employees in rebel-held areas.

Public sector employees in rebel-controlled areas have struggled since Hadi moved the central bank from Sanaa to the temporary capital of Aden in June, after accusing the insurgents of running down Yemen’s foreign reserves.

Dagher said government employees “across all provinces” will receive their salaries at post offices and exchange outlets, state news agency Saba reported.

Heads Are Finally Beginning To Roll At The Clinton Foundation
[Daily Caller] The Clinton Foundation announced it’s laying off 22 staffers on the Clinton Global Initiative, keeping with a plan to deal with the negative spotlight put on the organization during former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign.

The layoffs will take effect April 15, the Clinton Foundation said in a filing with the New York Department of Labor Thursday, citing the discontinuation of the Clinton Global Initiative. The move is part of a plan put in motion ahead of the presidential election in order to offset a storm of criticism regarding pay-to-play allegations during Clinton’s tenure as secretary of state.

The layoffs were reportedly announced internally in September, ahead of Clinton’s stunning loss to President-elect Donald Trump. Many other employees had already begun looking for or accepting other jobs at that time, as it had become clear the future of the initiative was in doubt. It’s unclear how many of the once 200 strong staff might remain at the Clinton Foundation in some other capacity.

The Clinton Foundation could not immediately be reached for comment.

Turkish border security measures includes 330 km of walls
Turkey last year erected 330 kilometers (205 miles) of walls along its borders with Syria and Iraq to fight illegal crossings, the Turkish military said on Jan. 14.
Silly Turks -- everyone knows walls don't work. Our elite betters have repeatedly lectured us on that...
According to a Turkish General Staff press statement on border incidents in 2016, Turkey also put up 191 kilometers (119 miles) of reinforced fences along those borders to boost physical security.

The statement said that nearly 425,000 people from 74 different countries trying to illegally cross Turkey’s borders were captured in 2016, adding that over 390,000 of them were from war-torn Syria. The statement added that foreign fighters from 68 different countries tried to cross the border to join the Daesh terrorist organization from August to December 2016, but that this number was seven times less than in the same period in 2015.

Turkey hosts some 3 million Syrian refugees, more than any other country in the world. The country has spent around $25 billion helping and sheltering refugees since the beginning of the Syrian civil war.

China-Japan-Koreas
N.Korea's Plutonium Stockpile 'Grows Alarmingly'
North Korea's plutonium stockpile has grown to some 50 kg, enough to make two or three more nuclear weapons, according to South Korea's 2016 defense white paper.

The white paper issued by the Defense Ministry on Wednesday carries latest information on the North Korean military, including its nuclear, missile and conventional military capacities. It says the North has about 50 kg of weapons-grade plutonium from reprocessing of spent nuclear fuel rods.

The amount is calculated by tallying the plutonium acquired from the reactor at the Yongbyon nuclear facility, which reopened in 2013 and subtracting the plutonium spent on recent nuclear tests, a military spokesman said. It was estimated jointly by the U.S. and South Korea.

The white paper also notes that the North "has made significant progress in a highly enriched uranium program and miniaturizing nuclear warheads," but gives no specific data.

The ministry previously estimated the North's plutonium stockpile at 40 kg since 2008 but has come under fire for making no efforts to change that estimate despite two more nuclear tests since then and the reopening of the Yongbyon reactor.

The white paper also notes the North's deployment of new 300-mm multiple rocket launchers with a range of some 200 km, which are capable of striking the U.S. military base in Pyeongtaek, Gyeonggi Province and the Gyeryongdae military headquarters in South Chungcheong Province from the demilitarized zone.

It also notes new Scud-ER missiles with a range of 1,000 km. The North fired three of them toward Japan on Sept. 5 last year. The Scud-ER could be capable of delivering nuclear warheads to any target in South Korea from the rear. The most effective defense is believed to be the U.S. Terminal High-Altitude Area Defense battery planned for deployment here.

The white paper says the North has an intercontinental ballistic missile in development that could threaten the U.S. mainland and is developing submarine-launched ballistic missiles. Each of them could in theory be equipped with nuclear warheads. But it takes a dimmer view of the North's long-range missile capabilities than two years ago.

The 2014 defense white paper said that the North was believed to "have the overall capability to threaten the U.S. mainland." But the new document makes no mention of this.

"Most of the North's eight test-launches of the Musudan missile ended in failure last year," the spokesman said. "We decided to hold back our assessment of the North's ICBMs that have been deployed without sufficient test-launches like the Musudan."

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Hamas says Turkey to send fuel to end Gaza electricity crisis, arrests hundreds of protesters
[IsraelTimes] Strip’s Islamist rulers reportedly detain hundreds in bid to quell days of protests over chronic power shortages.

Hamas, a contraction of the Arabic words for "frothing at the mouth", leader Ismail Haniyeh
...became Prime Minister after the legislative elections of 2006 which Hamas won. President Mahmoud Abbas dismissed Haniyeh from office on 14 June 2007 at the height of the Fatah-Hamas festivities, but Haniyeh did not acknowledge the decree and continues as the PM of Gazoo while Abbas maintains a separate PM in the West Bank...
said Saturday that The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
has pledged to send large amounts of fuel to the Gazoo Strip in an effort to end the crippling electricity shortage in the Paleostinian enclave, which has sparked rare public protests.

Gazoo’s Hamas rulers have detained hundreds of people in recent days in an effort to quell the protests that have rocked the Strip.

In a blurb, Haniyeh said the deal for the emergency assistance from Ankara was struck after days of "extensive efforts" to end the power crisis. The diesel fuel would help re-open Gazoo’s sole power plant, which supplies electricity to some 2.2 million Paleostinian residents of the Strip.

Haniyeh is also expected to meet with Qatar
...an emirate on the east coast of the Arabian Peninsula. It sits on some really productive gas and oil deposits, which produces the highest per capita income in the world. They piss it all away on religion, financing the Moslem Brotherhood and several al-Qaeda affiliates...
i leaders in the coming days to discuss long-term solutions to the regular electricity shortages in Gazoo.

The Paleostinian territory is currently experiencing the worst electricity shortage in years, with power supplied to households only three to four hours a day in a cold winter. A handful of deaths have been blamed on the cold weather in recent days.

In rare shows of dissent, Gazoo residents in recent weeks have staged spontaneous demonstrations, including marching at night with torches to demand more electricity.

On Thursday, thousands of protesters in northern Gazoo marched to the local headquarters of the Hamas-run electricity company, in one of the largest unauthorized protests in the territory since the terrorist group seized power nearly a decade ago. Hamas has shown little tolerance for dissent, and it moved quickly to contain Thursday’s demonstration. Security forces dispersed the protesters violently, with shots had gun sex and a number of journalists beaten up.

Over the weekend Hamas detained hundred of protest organizers, but the actions seem to have had little success, with further protests planned.

On Wednesday, Hamas tossed in the slammer
Please don't kill me!
a local comedian who made a viral video lamenting the power shortages during the cold winter season.

Life has become increasingly difficult for Gazoo’s 2 million residents, who are squeezed into the tiny coastal territory. Hamas’s violent takeover a decade ago triggered a border blockade by Israel and Egypt that, among other things, sharply aggravated power shortages.

But the more immediate cause of the crisis appears to be the split between Hamas and the Paleostinian Authority, the internationally recognized Paleostinian leadership which governs the West Bank. Hamas seized control of Gazoo from Fatah, which dominates the PA, in a near civil war in 2007. The two factions have been unable to form a unity government and have been in dispute over tax bills on fuel imports.

Another reason Gazoo energy authorities have so little funding is unpaid bills. Nearly 70 percent of households do not pay their electricity bills, either because of poverty or due to lack of collection, the UN estimates.

Turkey to provide Gaza with 15,000 tons of diesel fuel

[Ynet] The Energy Authority in the Gazoo Strip has reported that The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
has offered to transfer 15 thousand tons of diesel fuel to help resolve the power crisis plaguing the Gazoo Strip since the beginning of the month. A Paleostinian source said that the deputy leader of Hamas, the well-beloved offspring of the Moslem Brotherhood,, Ismail Haniyeh
...became Prime Minister after the legislative elections of 2006 which Hamas won. President Mahmoud Abbas dismissed Haniyeh from office on 14 June 2007 at the height of the Fatah-Hamas festivities, but Haniyeh did not acknowledge the decree and continues as the PM of Gazoo while Abbas maintains a separate PM in the West Bank...
, helped negotiate the deal.

#1  15k tons is probably no more than a few days worth
Posted by: lord garth || 01/15/2017 8:38 Comments || Top||

#2  OK kids, here are my calculations:

Gaza has a load of 500 megawatts or 500,000 killowats
500,000 kw/13.75 gal/hr/kw - 36,300 gal/hr of oil

36.300 gal/hr x 6.7 lb/gal/2.2 lb/kg =110663 kg/hr

110,663 kg/hr x 1 tonne/1000 kg = 111 tonnes/hr

Turkey saying that they will deliver 15,000 tonnes to Gaza will supply Gaza for
15000 tonnes/(111 tones/hr*24 hr/day) = 6 days.
Posted by: Alaska Paul || 01/15/2017 16:54 Comments || Top||

#3  I wrote my units wrong in one place. it should 13.76 kw/(gallon*hr). Results are the same. 500 megawatts is a lot of megawatts! The problem in Gaza is that they will not pay for it. So if turkey wants to dump their money down a rathole, have a ball. They will need to send a tanker with 20K tonnes a week to keep up with the electrical demand, just barely.

Haftar makes way for Saudi extremist clerics to preach in eastern Libya
[Libya Observer] A letter written by the Administration of the General Authority of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs in eastern government of al-Thanni unveiled how it had given permission for a Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
n sheikh, who is of Paleostinian descent, Osama Ataya al-Etibi, to proselytize and give religious preaching, seminars, and lectures in the areas he desired in coordination with the districts’ Awqaf and Islamic Affairs offices.

The Saudi holy man, al-Etibi, is one of the well-known advocators of the so-called Madkhalism ‐ a Salafist movement based on the writings of Rabee al-Madkhali ‐ and he had been involved in Afghanistan fighting.

"The Saudi holy man is being hosted by the self-styled General Command of Dignity Operation." The letter says, which has created questions among many Libyans as to the nature of hosting a radical religious holy man by a military leadership, especially that the holy man’s religious convictions are very distant from the Libyan society, thus raising skepticism high as regards the loyalty and independence of Haftar’s military.

Meanwhile,
...back at the laboratory the smoke and fumes had dispersed, to reveal an ominous sight...
several residents from eastern Libyan cities like al-Bayda have time and time again expressed discomfort of the fact that the General Authority of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs has been altered from a state institution, which should control mosques’ affairs and religious preaching, into an entity that advocates for an Lion of Islam religious ideology and allows the bandidos bully boyz to tighten a grip on it.

A big number of Madkhali followers are now fighting alongside Haftar’s forces based on fatwas issued by their sheikhs in Saudi Arabia, and al-Etibi, who is hosted by Haftar, is an example.

Despite the fact that those fighters, who are loyal to Madkhalism, are civilians, they have formed a number of brigades and are now fighting along with Haftar’s Dignity Operation, such as the infamous Tawheed brigade. Some of this brigade’s leaders are accused of abduction, torture, and killing in the eastern Garnada prison.

-Signs, Portents, and the Weather-
Documentary depicts ancient Göbeklitepe as idol center from Abrahamic age
[Hurriyet Daily News] A documentary prepared jointly by TRT, the Diyarbakir Governor’s Office and the Turkish Development Ministry has claimed that the ancient statues in the world’s oldest-known temple were constructed by the Prophet Abraham’s father, Terah, prompting anger from archaeologists who say the claim is erroneous and misleading.
Class, this with the same crappy pseudoscholarship that keeps finding the really, truly, gen-you-wine Noah's ark.
The documentary, which was produced to introduce the cultural heritage of the southeastern province Diyarbakir, claims that a T-shape statue in Göbeklitepe with a fox motif was destroyed by Abraham.

During a part of the video in which the idol is destroyed, the narrator says: "Who can tell us that it was not Aser [Terah], father of Prophet Abraham, who built the statues in Göbeklitepe? Or can we claim that the temple where the idols that Prophet Abraham broke was not Göbeklitepe?"

Göbeklitepe has been dated to 12,000 years ago, well before the time in which Abraham is said to have lived.

Archeologist and publisher Nezih Basgelen said the purpose behind the move was to target Göbeklitepe.

"Within the framework of results that were obtained through scientific methods, Göbeklitepe dates back to 11,800-8,600 BCE. Here we see that there is a gap of around seven to eight thousand years between the date that scientific research has proved and the dates of religious references. Therefore, from this perspective, there are many problems in depicting Göbeklitepe as a communal site related to Prophet Abraham," said Basgelen.

"Showing the statues as idols that were broken is dangerous targeting," he said.

Located in Örencik, 18 kilometers from the center of the southeastern province of Sanliurfa, Göbeklitepe was first discovered in 1963 during surface surveys carried out by researchers from the universities of Istanbul and reliably Democrat Chicago, aka The Windy City or Mobtown
... home of Al Capone, a succession of Daleys, Barak Obama, and Rahm Emmanuel,...
Since 1995, the Sanliurfa Museum and the German Archaeology Institute have been collaborating on the excavations.

Researchers have discovered 3- to 6-meter-long T-shaped steles weighing between 40 and 60 tons, the ruins of the world’s oldest temple, a large number of wild animal figures, human sculptures and a nearly 65-centimeter-long human sculpture from 12,000 years ago.

Many organizations, including the Culture and Tourism Ministry, have been conducting various projects for the promotion of Göbeklitepe, which is expected to enter the permanent list of UNESCO’s World Heritage Sites thanks to its historic texture, archaeological value and uniqueness.

#1  12,000 years is closer to it. Abraham was NOT 12,000 years ago. He was closer to about 4,000. Big difference.

Terah was Abraham's father but that still isn't 12,000 years ago.
Göbeklitepe is so old it is practically on the near edge of the Neolithic. OLD capital O.
About 8,000 years older than Abraham. Seriously.

Europe
Top Bishop: Europe Will Soon Be Muslim Because of Our Stupidity
Monsignor Carlo Liberati, Archbishop Emeritus of Pompeii, said that Islam will soon become Europe’s main religion thanks to the huge number of Muslim migrants alongside the increasing secularism of native Europeans.

Speaking to Italian Catholic journal La Fede Quotidiana, the archbishop said: “In 10 years we will all be Muslims because of our stupidity. Italy and Europe live in a pagan and atheist way, they make laws that go against God and they have traditions that are proper of paganism.

“All of this moral and religious decadence favours Islam.”

Everyone in Italy and the rest of Europe will “soon be Muslim” because of the country’s “stupidity”, a prominent Italian archbishop has said.
“We have a weak Christian faith,” he added. “The Church nowadays does not work well and seminaries are empty.

“Parishes are the only thing still standing. We need a true Christian life. All this paves the way to Islam. In addition to this, they have children and we do not. We are in full decline.”

The archbishop added that the problem is not just Muslim immigration. The number of Eastern Europeans arriving over the past few years has also hit the quality of life for native Italians, he said.

“We help without delay those coming from outside and we forget many poor and old Italians who are eating from the trash,” the archbishop said. “We need policies that take care of Italians first: our young people and the unemployed.

“I am a protester. If I were not a priest, I’d be out there demonstrating in the squares. What is the point of so many migrants that instead of thanking for the food we give them, they just throw it, spend hours with their cell phones and even organise riots?”

He even criticised the Catholic Church for giving money to migrants.

“Giving money to migrants wandering around town is not only wrong, but morally harmful because we encourage their behaviour and they get used to that, not mentioning the fact that we already feed them.

“I think sometimes this creates a beggars’ network. I remember that my father went to work very hard as a migrant in Australia so I could go to seminary. So he has experienced in his own skin the discomfort of poverty and the noble virtue of gratitude.”

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Fatah warns moving US embassy will ‘open gates of hell’
Fatah is the PLO is the Paleostinian Authority... but fig leaves are convenient for those who don't want to have to respond as decency requires.
[IsraelTimes] Spokesman for Abbas’s party says Paleostinian people ’won’t allow’ Trump to relocate embassy to Jerusalem.

The front man for Paleostinian Authority President the ineffectual Mahmoud Abbas
... a graduate of the prestigious unaccredited Patrice Lumumba University in Moscow with a doctorate in Holocaust Denial...
’s Fatah party on Saturday warned that if the Trump administration moves the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, it will "open the gates of hell."
You mean like you've been doing with your little knife intifada? Or your truck attacks now being met by concrete barriers? Up until now the Israelis have been polite; go for open war in front of President Trump, and things will get considerably more exciting.
Fatah front man Osama Qawasmeh said Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
’s campaign promise, if implemented, would negate chances for peace and stability in the region, and "the Paleostinian people won’t allow that happen," according to Israel Radio. To move the embassy, he said, would be to "open the gates of hell in the region and in the whole world."

On Friday, Abbas told Le Figaro the Paleostinians might revoke their recognition of Israel: If the embassy transfer takes place, "there would be several options for us, and we would discuss them with Arab countries," Abbas said.
You mean the Arab countries seeking rapprochement with Israel in the hope she will protect them from Iran? The ones who've been neglecting to send you promised funds? Good luck with that.
"Reversing our recognition of the State of Israel is one of them. But we hope that it doesn’t reach that point, and that, on the contrary, we will be able to work with the next American administration," he added.
Mr. Trump invited Settler leaders to his inauguration. I haven't read that he invited any Palestinians. This is suggestive.
Earlier Saturday, Abbas warned that moving the embassy to Jerusalem would "destroy the prospects of any political process, bury the hopes for a two-state solution, and fuel extremism in our region, as well as worldwide."

"In this moment, we extend our hand to President-elect Trump for his cooperation to make peace based on international law," Abbas said in statement after he inaugurated the Paleostinian embassy to the Holy See following an audience with Pope Francis.

The Paleostinians strongly oppose the move, saying it would kill any hopes for negotiating an Israeli-Paleostinian peace agreement and rile the region by undercutting Moslem and Christian claims to the holy city.

But would be entertaining. Maybe CNN is trying to branch out since fake news isn't bringing in the bucks anymore.

#6  You know what is fake news? The notion that the presenter of this YT vid, Mark Dice, is a "media analyst" - now that's fake news. He's a 911 truther and unhinged conspericy theorist. It appears his career as a gadfly is somewhere on the loonier side of his associates - Alex Jones and Jessie Ventura. CNN is a horrible product and it's anti-trump bias is undeniable. But the report in question has been fact checked and found to be legit. Sleezy yes...fake no. Smith is indeed a drama queen but his criticisim of Trump's presser reaction to CNN is shared by many "credible" sources.

Africa Subsaharan
Questions raised in Cameroon over use of witchcraft to fight militants
[IBTIMES.CO.UK] After Cameroon
...a long, narrow country that fills the space between Nigeria and Chad on the northeast, CAR to the southeast. Prior to incursions by Boko Haram nothing ever happened there...
ian President Paul Biya urged citizens a year ago to use witchcraft to fight Boko Haram
... not to be confused with Procol Harum, Harum Scarum, possibly to be confused with Helter Skelter. The Nigerian version of al-Qaeda and the Taliban rolled together and flavored with a smigeon of distinctly Subsaharan ignorance and brutality...
, people have been earnestly following his orders despite the fact that performing black magic is illegal in the country. However,
if you can't say something nice about a person some juicy gossip will go well...
questions have been raised over the move and its effectiveness.
Let us know how that worked out for you, okay?
The president's call was seen as a desperate measure as Cameroon, along with other West African regions like Nigeria, the Niger delta and the Chad Basin that are infested by Boko Haram, continues its fight against the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
(Isis)-linked krazed killer group, known for kidnappings and killings.

Cameroon government data reportedly showed that more than 1,500 people have died in the past two years in the fight against Boko Haram and 155,000 people have been displaced.

While many practising wizardry in the country claim that their use of curses and spells against Boko Haram in Cameroon has been effective in thwarting attacks, a government official said they could not confirm such claims.

Political experts, on the other hand, said asking people to resort to black magic to fight terrorism shows the government was not confident of its own military, Pri.org reported.

Henriette Ekwe, a Cameroonian political analyst and good government advocate, was quoted as saying: "When one comes to advocate the practice of witchcraft, it is because one is not sure of one's army.

"It is not up to a head of state to advocate practices of black magic in a theatre of operations where it is the weapons that must inflict defeat on Boko Haram, not magicians or sorcerers. This is very serious for the morale of the troops.

Three arrested during Belgian police raid on Molenbeek street where Paris attacks mastermind Salah Abdeslam lived
Posted as a place holder should any updates come through today.
[DailyMail, where America gets its news]
  • The district of Brussels is known to be rife with ISIS sympathizers

  • Salah Abdeslam was found there after masterminding the Paris attacks

  • Perpetrators of the 2004 Madrid bombings and an attack in Belgium lived there

  • One of the raids is believed to have been carried out on the street where Abdeslam was arrested
Yesterday at 18:44 Pancho Snore8829 posted the following in response to the tweet on the subject found by Bright Pebbles:
Belgian police detained three people for questioning after carrying out house searches in Brussels that were related to an anti-terrorism investigation, prosecutors said on Saturday.

The house searches were carried out in the Brussels district of Molenbeek, which gained international attention when locals with links to Syria took part in the November 2015 attacks that killed 130 people in Paris.

"The searches were carried out as part of an investigation by Brussels prosecutors," a spokeswoman for Brussels prosecutors said. "While nothing was found, three people were taken in for questioning."

The area where the searches took place was closed off to traffic as special police forces with machine guns moved in, a Reuters journalist said.
Update from Breitbart at 2:20 p.m. ET:
Belgian authorities have released three people who were detained in a series of anti-terror raids in the Brussels suburb of Molenbeek, where some of the Gay Paree and Brussels attackers lived or traveled.

Ine Van Wymersch, spokeswoman for the Brussels prosecutor’s office, said Sunday that the three were questioned, then released during the night.

No weapons or explosives were found during the weekend raids. Van Wymersch declined to provide more details on the investigation.
At least they were able to clone cell phones and such for further investigation, but this smacks of security theater.

Iraq
Destroyed Mosul bridge won't stop Iraqis from crossing over
Those escaping east to Zuhur district drag suitcases along with strollers and wheelchairs.
The rubble of a bridge blown up by Daesh in Mosul to block advancing Iraqi forces has become a lifeline for civilians as more and more of the northern city breaks loose from the grip of the ultra-hardline militants.

Men and women, children and the elderly scramble down the banks of the Khosr River, a tributary of the Tigris some 30 metres wide and a metre deep which counter-terrorism forces crossed last week in a nighttime raid.

Lumbering over ladders and pipes, civilians crawl onto the span of the bridge, which has collapsed into the murky water, and shimmy up the opposite bank along a dirt path.

Those escaping east to Zuhur district drag suitcases along with strollers and wheelchairs. Those returning west to Muthanna carry sacks of rice, potatoes and onions, cartons of eggs and packs of baby diapers. The journey in either direction is usually several kilometres.

"Now there are people entering and people leaving," Major General Sami Al Aridi told Reuters this week after touring both sides of the river on foot. "The ones who left are returning, and those who are leaving now are coming from neighbourhoods where there are currently clashes."

He said he expected the latest evacuees to return in a day or two as Iraqi forces pushed further west. The UN had warned that the US backed campaign to kick Daesh out of Mosul, their largest urban stronghold in Iraq or Syria, could displace up to 1.5 million people.

But with much of the eastern half of the city now under government control, most residents have stayed in their homes or moved in temporarily with relatives in other neighbourhoods.

That has complicated the task of the military, which must fight among civilians in built-up areas against an enemy that has targeted non-combatants and hidden among them.

US warns its citizens against travel to Kenya
The US on Friday warned its citizens within Kenya to avoid traveling to the Somalia border following claims of threats by terrorist group al-Shabaab.

In an advisory signed on January 13, 2017, the department warned its citizens to be on hight alert over potential attacks and high risk of crime throughout the country. The advisory cited Mandera, Wajir and Garissa as well as Tana River and Lamu among those that US citizens should avoid.

“This replaces the travel warning dated June 30, 2016,” the advisory said.

“Avoid traveling to all areas of Malindi in Kilifi county and the Nairobi neighborhood of Eastleigh,” the US said in its warning.

In Mombasa, the US Embassy recommended its citizens to visit Old Town only at daylight hours and avoid using the Likoni Ferry due to safety concerns.

“Violent and sometimes fatal crimes, including armed carjackings, muggings, home invasions and burglaries and kidnappings can occur at anytime,” read part of the notice.

Gee, I'm Starting to Think the Obama DOJ Just Might Be Politicized
[National Review] They took extraordinary measures in a shaky case involving Trump but refused to help FBI investigations involving Hillary and the DNC.

In the heat of the fall campaign, the commentariat got its knickers twisted over Donald Trump’s vow that, if elected, he’d have his Justice Department appoint a special prosecutor to investigate Hillary Clinton, his political rival.

How remarkable, then, that the media is so indifferent to the revelation that, at the very same time, the Obama Justice Department was actively conducting an investigation of Trump. As I recounted in Wednesday’s column, the FBI reportedly had suspicions that Trump, or at least members of his "team," might be violating financial and banking laws. Upon poking around, the Bureau determined there was no "nefarious purpose" in the connection of a server in Trump Tower to at least one bank.

Yet the case was not dropped upon the finding of no criminality. Instead, apparently because the bank or banks involved were Russian, the matter was pursued as a national-security investigation under the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA).

Indeed, the investigation may well be ongoing. Reporting indicates that surveillance warrants were sought from the FISA court in June and October 2016. The first one is said to have "named" Trump himself (we don’t know if that means the government was targeting Trump for surveillance, or if his name was merely mentioned in the FISA application). That application was apparently so lacking that the FISA court refused to authorize it, even though that court is generally quite accommodating of government requests to conduct secret searches and eavesdropping. The court is reported to have granted a narrower application in October -- one that appears not to have named Trump. The court’s proceedings are secret, so this reporting cannot be confirmed.
Perhaps someday Star Chamber proceedings will be opened to public scrutiny.

In long-shot pointless Paris peace bid, France sees nothing to lose
[IsraelTimes] Why is a lame-duck French president hosting a peace summit without Israelis, Paleostinians or the incoming US administration? To send a message.

It sounds far-fetched at best: holding a Mideast peace conference without Israelis, Paleostinians or the incoming US government.

But the French organizers say that’s the whole point. They want Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and US President-elect Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
to see that most of the world wants a two-state solution and is fed up with decades of conflict.

With chances for a Mideast peace deal lower than in years -- perhaps a generation -- French President Francois Hollande
...the Socialist president of La Belle France, an economic bad joke for la Belle France but seemingly a foreign policy realist...
figures there’s nothing to lose.

French diplomats fear that Trump will unleash new tensions in the region by condoning settlements on land claimed by the Paleostinians and potentially moving the US Embassy to contested Jerusalem.

So more than 70 foreign ministers and other top envoys are gathering Sunday in Gay Paree to urge the establishment of a Paleostinian state.

Netanyahu says the conference is "rigged" against Israel and declined an invitation to a special meeting afterward. Paleostinian President the ineffectual Mahmoud Abbas
... a graduate of the prestigious unaccredited Patrice Lumumba University in Moscow with a doctorate in Holocaust Denial...
was initially expected, but his visit to Gay Paree has been postponed.

Even the organizers know it’s symbolic; no one expects a breakthrough. It’s aimed at presenting Trump with a collective international push for peace once he takes office Friday.

For Obama’s outgoing government, Sunday’s meeting marks the bitter, disappointing end of eight years of failed Israeli-Paleostinian diplomacy. Days before leaving office, Secretary of State John F. I was in Vietnam, you know Kerry
Former Senator-for-Life from Massachussetts, self-defined war hero, speaker of French, owner of a lucky hat, conqueror of Cambodia, unsuccessful presidential candidate, and utterly failed Secretary of State...
will headline the Gay Paree event -- yet he’s participating only to ensure that America’s interest in a two-state solution is preserved.

According to a draft statement obtained by The News Agency that Dare Not be Named on Friday, the conference will urge Israel and the Paleostinians "to officially restate their commitment to the two-state solution." It also will affirm that the international community "will not recognize" changes to Israel’s pre-1967 lines without agreement by both sides.

Hollande’s government has been trying for years to revive peace-making, pointing to diplomatic successes like the 2015 Gay Paree climate agreement, its improved relations with Israel over the past decade and hard line against Israeli rivals Iran and Syria.

But with Netanyahu snubbing the conference and Trump’s administration "reserved" about it, according to a French diplomat, Sunday’s gathering looks increasingly like an effort to isolate Israel, not entice it to the negotiating table.

Pro-Israel demonstrators plan a protest Sunday in Gay Paree.

Hollande too is a lame duck, leaving office in May -- and his government has made no plans to follow up Sunday’s conference with enforcement measures or outreach to Trump’s team.

The final declaration may warn Trump against moving the embassy, a move that could be seen as recognizing Jerusalem as Israel’s capital after decades of insisting that the city’s status must be determined by direct negotiations.

The sides haven’t negotiated even indirectly since a failed US peace effort in 2014.

Sudanese migrant arrested for attempted rape of 12-year-old
Israel has bleeding hearts, too, who also claim they have a duty to accept all who come.
[IsraelTimes] Suspect, 26, broke into Petah Tikva home and assaulted girl before father chased him off, police say.

A Sudanese migrant was placed in durance vile
Into the paddy wagon wit' yez!
Saturday on suspicion of breaking into a Petah Tikva home and sexually assaulting a 12-year-old girl while she slept, police said.

According to reports, the girl’s father found the 26-year-old suspect in his daughter’s bedroom and chased him off.

He was apprehended by police after a short search near the Petah Tikva home on Saturday.

The suspect will face a judge later on Saturday for a remand hearing.

He faces charges of attempted rape, assault and an indecent act involving a minor.

Official figures show nearly 47,000 illegal immigrants colonists are currently residing in Israel, almost all from Eritrea

National elections have been periodically scheduled and cancelled; none have ever been held in the country. and Sudan. Most live in the poorer neighborhoods of southern Tel Aviv, with some blaming them for rising crime rates in the city.

Israel has in recent years sought to limit the migrants colonists’ numbers. It has built a fence along the border with Egypt, a once-common migration route, and sent many migrants colonists to a desert detention facility -- and in some cases back to third-party countries in Africa.

Many say they are fleeing conflict and persecution and are seeking refugee status. Israeli officials contend they are economic migrants colonists, and have resisted calls to recognize them as refugees.

Israel’s approval ratings for refugee status are drastically lower than international levels. According to the United Nation’s High Commissioner for Refugees, internationally, 84 percent of Eritreans and 56% of Sudanese asylum seekers received either refugee status or extended protection in 2014.

India-Pakistan
Nisar stands his ground over ‘banned groups’ controversy
Astounding, even for Pakistain.
[DAWN] Defending remarks he made in the Senate earlier this week, Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan
...Currently the Interior Minister of Pakistain. He is the senior leader of the Pak Moslem League (N) and a close aide to Nawaz Uncle Fester Sharif. He is noted for his vocal anti-American railing in the National Assembly. However (comma) Khan told the U.S. ambassador that he was in fact pro-American but he and the PML-N would have to be critical of US actions in order to remain publicly credible. Khan cited his wife and children's US citizenship as proof, which means he's lying to one side or the other and probably both. He wears a wig, but you probably guessed that. since hair doesn't grow naturally in that shape or texture...
reiterated on Saturday that he believed there should be separate laws for organizations that are proscribed on the basis of terrorist links and those banned on a sectarian basis.

The minister had caused uproar in the upper house on Tuesday when he tried to distinguish between the two different types of banned
...the word banned seems to have a different meaning in Pakistain than it does in most other places. Or maybe it simply lacks any meaning at all...
organization
s.

"On one side are clear-cut terrorist organizations; there is no space for them in Pakistain. Their office-bearers or anyone linked to them are either eliminated in encounters, imprisoned or manage to flee across the border. But organizations that are proscribed on sectarian grounds, whose office-bearers have no cases against them, they are still in Pakistain," the minister told news hounds after a public meeting in Kallar Syedan.

"It is unfair to link everything to Maulana Ludhiyanvi," he said, referring to criticism of his meeting with the head of the banned Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat
...which is the false nose and plastic mustache of the murderous banned extremist group Sipah-e-Sahaba Pakistain, whatcha might call the political wing of Lashkar-e-Jhangvi...
(ASWJ).

"Those suggesting that I uttered something sacrilegious by saying terrorist organizations and those organizations that were proscribed on the basis of sectarian differences are different have not examined the record," he said, referring to the list of proscribed organizations compiled by the National Counter Terrorism Authority (Nacta).

"Can Allama Sajid Naqvi be linked to any terrorist organization? Can [Syed Hamid Ali Shah] Moosavi be linked to a terrorist organization? No, they are patriotic Paks. But their organizations have been proscribed on a sectarian basis."

"We will need to make separate laws for these two types of organizations. This is necessary to remove confusions regarding who-is-meeting-whom. I ask which Pakistain Peoples Party (PPP) leader hasn’t met leaders of proscribed organizations in his time?"

When asked about the disappearance of five civil society activists in the past week, he said efforts were being made to recover the missing men and ensure their return to their families.

He said that in Islamabad, a missing persons report had been filed only over Prof Salman Haider’s disappearance, while the other FIRs were filed in Lahore. He said that incidents of disappearances took time to be resolved, adding that he was personally monitoring the issue.

Talking about the military courts, he said that a fast-track mechanism was needed to ensure that condemned hard boyz should meet their deserved end. He said the fate of the military courts would become clear in a few days.

While commenting on the Quetta commission, he said that that matter would be taken up by the apex court on Jan 19, and a report would be submitted there on Jan 18. He said that a detailed report on the achievements of the interior ministry during his stint of ministry would be submitted.

Caucasus/Russia/Central Asia
Prof. Stephen Cohen: Anti-Russia Hysteria Putting United States in Danger
[PJ] Stephen Cohen, professor emeritus of Russian studies at New York University and Princeton, spoke with Fox News' Tucker Carlson for a second time this week Friday evening.

Cohen, one of the country's foremost experts on Russia, argued that the anti-Putin hysteria in Washington, D.C., is putting the United States in danger.

Carlson started the conversation by referencing Senator Marco Rubio's grilling of President-Elect Trump's pick for secretary of state, Rex Tillerson, at his confirmation hearing earlier this week, particularly Rubio's question whether he considers Russian President Vladimir Putin to be a "war criminal."

"I was so struck by Rubio's insistence that Tillerson concede that he was," Carlson said. "Would America gain something, do you think, by an incoming secretary of state calling another head of state a war criminal?"

"No," Cohen answered flatly. "Because it would end what President-Elect Trump says he wants to do, and that's create a new policy toward Russia that we used to call detente -- cooperation."

The professor described the precarious state of affairs around the world as President Barack Obama prepares to leave office: "Perhaps the worst relationship with Russia in our time, [with] perils everywhere from the Baltics to Ukraine to Syria, to guys running around -- terrorists -- looking for radioactive material to make bombs, and if they set them off we won't be able to inhabit those places for a generation."

"Trump seems to understand this," Cohen continued. "He seems to understand that we can't deal with these problems without Russian cooperation."

The professor argued that "the bloody war" we're already seeing against Trump from the establishment in Washington is "partly because he wants to do this."

Cohen noted that he is not a partisan of Trump or a partisan of Putin. "I'm a partisan of American national security," he explained. "They say these things because they do not know what they're talking about. They don't know the dangers. They don't know Putin's real role in the world. He is far from the greatest threat to America."

He added, "the threat that Putin represents to the United States -- probably wouldn't make the top five. But they're testifying in Congress that it's number one. And this is a threat to our own national security."

Tucker, while conceding that he's not an expert on Russia, agreed with the professor, saying it "comports with common sense."

"It does seem like hysteria has seized D.C.," Carlson said.

"And we're in danger, as a result," Cohen concluded.

of Iraq and the Levant (ISIS) bully boy who attacked a famous nightclub at the heart of Istanbul escaped with his son after the attack, according to police sources.

"Ebu Muhammed Horasani," the code name of Uzbek ISIS bully boy Abdulgadir Masharipov,
...finally the gentleman's name is revealed...
who is accused of killing a total of 39 people and wounding 65 others at the Reina nightclub in Ortaköy on Jan. 1, went to his home in Istanbul’s Zeytinburnu district after the attack and took his son before escaping, the sources said.

Police raided a house in Istanbul’s Maltepe district and detained Masharipov’s wife, whose identity has been kept hidden. Previous reports stated that his wife and his family members were tossed into the calaboose by police after the attack.

"I learned about the attack from TV. I didn’t know that my husband was an ISIS bully boy, let alone a sympathizer," media reports had quoted his wife as saying.

According to newly obtained information, Masharipov’s wife was detained in Maltepe late on Jan. 11, while his 1.5-year-old daughter was taken under protection. Police said Masharipov arrived in the Central Anatolian province of Konya with his two children at the beginning of 2016.

The ISIS bully boy rented a house in Istanbul’s Basaksehir toward the end of December 2016 with his family, according to investigations. The bully boy said goodbye to his wife late on Dec. 31, 2016, and left the house.

After staging the attack on the nightclub, the bully boy went to a house in Zeytinburnu, where his wife and children were brought to. Masharipov then took his 4-year-old son and went missing.

"We said goodbye to each other and he left the house," Masharipov’s wife told the anti-terror police during her interrogation. The police are trying to locate the people who possibly helped the ISIS bully boy and ISIS cells in Istanbul in light of the information given by Masharipov’s wife.

Previous reports have said that after attacking Reina, Masharipov went to Zeytinburnu with a taxi and asked workers at a local Uighur restaurant to give money to the driver. Uighurs were among those detained after the attack, while the owner of the restaurant, identified as Semsettin Dursun, has denied any connection to the attack.

China-Japan-Koreas
Trump risks 'war' with Beijing if US blocks access to South China Sea
The US risks a “large-scale war” with China if it attempts to blockade islands in the South China Sea, Chinese state media has said, adding that if recent statements become policy when Donald Trump takes over as president “the two sides had better prepare for a military clash”.

China has controversially built fortifications and artificial islands across the South China Sea. Rex Tillerson, Trump’s nominee for secretary of state, said China’s “access to those islands … is not going to be allowed”.

China claims nearly the entire area, with rival claims by five south-east Asian neighbours and Taiwan.

Tillerson did not specify how the US would block access but experts agreed it could only be done by a significant show of military force. Tillerson likened China’s island building to “Russia’s taking of Crimea”.

“Tillerson had better bone up on nuclear power strategies if he wants to force a big nuclear power to withdraw from its own territories,” said an editorial in the Global Times, a Communist-party controlled newspaper.

“China has enough determination and strength to make sure that his rabble rousing will not succeed … Unless Washington plans to wage a large-scale war in the South China Sea, any other approaches to prevent Chinese access to the islands will be foolish.”

Under Barack Obama the US remained neutral on sovereignty claims, not recognising any ownership, but often challenged China’s control of the area by sailing warships past islands in what it called freedom of navigation exercises. If that policy became more confrontational, including denying China access to islands it already controls, “it would set a course for devastating confrontation between China and the US”, declared the state-run China Daily.

China’s official response was more tame. Foreign ministry spokesman Lu Kang said China-US relations were based on “non-confrontation, non-conflict, mutual benefit and win-win cooperation”.

Both newspapers also dismissed recent statements by Trump and his team – taking a similar stance to the Chinese government, which is waiting for Trump to be sworn in before equating his words with policy.

Tillerson’s remarks “are not worth taking seriously because they are a mish-mash of naivety, shortsightedness, worn-out prejudices and unrealistic political fantasies”, the China Daily wrote. “Should he act on them in the real world it would be disastrous.”

There are signs, though, that Trump shares Tillerson’s views and they will be carried into the White House. In December, Trump made similar comments in an interview with Fox News, accusing Beijing of “building a massive fortress in the middle of the South China Sea, which they shouldn’t be doing”.

Peter Navarro, Trump’s pick to head the newly created national trade council, has been extremely hostile to China and encouraged the president-elect to pursue a “peace through strength” policy in the region.

“Beijing has created some 3,000 acres of artificial islands in the South China Sea with very limited American response,” Navarro has previously written.

10 ISIS troops die in mutual shootout in Ok Corral Mosul

Nineveh (IraqiNews.com) Ten members of the Islamic State group were either killed or wounded due to an internal clash in the eastern side of Mosul, a source told Alsumaria on Saturday.

The source said, “Dozens of the Islamic State’s members crossed the Tigris River toward the western side of Mosul, to escape from the government forces.”

“The leaders of the Islamic State in the western bank of the Tigris River accused the fleeing members of being cowards, while the fleeing members accused the leaders of treason,” the source explained. “The mutual accusations lead to clashes that last for half an hour, leaving ten casualties of the group,” the source added.

Security forces managed in the few last hours to liberate a number of areas, while the majority of the Islamic State’s leaders flee outside the city of Mosul, along with their families.

Operations Room, as front man for his ministry.

In his first statement, just a few hours following the promotion, Ghasri told a Libyan TV channel based in Istanbul and close to Moslem Brüderbund that the GNA would appoint a a chief-of-staff for the Libyan army within the next few days.

The objective was to to unite the east and west of Libya under one military authority, he explained.

"We are calling for all the Libyan army factions to unite under one general leader. His name will be announced in the next few days," he said.

A fortnight ago, Presidency Council deputy Fathi Majbri in his capacity as acting head of the PC unilaterally appointed Salem Juha as chief-of-staff. It was one of several controversial appointments made by Majbri while Faiez Serraj was away at a family wedding, and they triggered the resignation of Musa Koni from the PC.

Serraj reversed them on his return but has been unable to persuade Koni to rejoin.

As far as the House of Representatives in concerned, however, Major-General Abdul Razzak al-Nazhouri is chief-of-staff although it appointed Khalifa Hafter over him as general commander of the Libyan armed forces and subsequently a field marshal.

Constitutional changes to galvanize Turkey: President Erdoğan
[Hurriyet Daily News] Once adopted, the sweeping constitutional changes now facing parliament will serve to re-energize The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan
... Turkey's version of Mohammed Morsi but they voted him back in so they deserve him...
said on Jan. 14.

"Entry into force of the constitutional changes debated by parliament will have a galvanizing effect on our country," Recep Tayyip Erdogan said in Istanbul, at the opening of a new building for Borsa Istanbul, the nation's stock exchange.

"No one can stand in front of the new Turkey's rise and building itself up," he added.

Erdogan stressed that the final decision on the proposed changes, including a shift to an executive presidential system, would be made by the Turkish people in a referendum following the required passage by parliament.

"The nation's will is very important for that. Right now there is an understanding [in parliament] which cannot tolerate the national will and also cannot tolerate it [the changes] going to a referendum."

Erdogan also spoke about changes to the way foreigners could gain Turkish citizenship. "People who enter Turkey with $2 million in investment or bring $2 million [to Turkey] can gain Turkish citizenship," he said.

These changes amount to a "new understanding" of "global citizenship," the president suggested.

Turkey Suspends Pro-Kurdish Lawmaker for 'Genocide' Comment
Any excuse will do when Kurdish Untermenschen are involved.
[AnNahar] A pro-Kurdish politician has been temporarily suspended from the Turkish parliament for saying the word "genocide" during heated discussions on changes to the constitution, state media said on Friday.

Member of parliament for the Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) Garo Paylan said four communities had been lost and "driven from these lands in large massacres (and) genocides," referring to Armenians, Assyrians, Greeks and Jews, according to Anadolu Agency.

Videos showed politicians from the pro-government Justice and Development Party (AKP) angrily interrupting Paylan's speech.

He has been banned from attending three sessions in the parliament, which is currently voting on provisions in a controversial bill to change the constitution and increase presidential powers under Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan
... Turkey's version of Mohammed Morsi but they voted him back in so they deserve him...
Paylan made the comments during a speech in which he criticised the draft constitution for giving one man extensive executive powers.

The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
vehemently denies a genocide against Armenians took place. AKP politician Naci Bostan slammed Paylan's comments as "provocative" and "unfair", Anadolu said.

But Armenians, backed by many historians, a growing number of foreign parliaments and the European parliament, say up to 1.5 million of their kin were systematically killed in the dying days of the Ottoman Empire.

Turkey admits large-scale massacres took place, but says they were perpetrated in self-defence against what it describes as a Russian-inspired uprising by Armenians. It says 500,000 Armenians died in fighting and of starvation.

Paylan's comments came after a vicious fight broke out in parliament on Thursday as politicians voted on parts of the 18-article constitution bill which -- if passed -- will be put to a referendum at the end of March or early April.

Iraq
Mosul Offensive News

Iraqi forces capture ISIS HQ in Mosul
Ooooohhhh -- files, phones, and laptops for the translation group at West Point to play with if the Americans got there fast enough.
BAGHDAD: Iraqi forces fighting Daesh in Mosul have reached the Nineveh province governance building and raised the Iraqi flag there, a senior US defense official said on Friday.

By late on Friday, elite Iraqi forces had taken control of part of the Mosul University complex and reached two more of the five bridges that link east and west Mosul, said Sabah Al-Numan, spokesman for the counter-terrorism service (CTS).

“God willing, in a very short while, we will announce the clearing of the entire left bank ... There are not many areas left (under Daesh control) on this bank,” he told state television.

Maj. Gen. Sami Al-Aridi, a senior CTS commander, said the university was the most important Daesh base in the eastern half of the city.

“Forces are heading into the depths of the university,” he said earlier in the day after bulldozers had smashed through a wall surrounding the campus and dozens of CTS troops sprinted through carrying rocket-propelled grenade launchers. Iraqi forces have now reached Mosul’s three southernmost bridges, having battled their way to the fourth bridge several days ago.

The US-led coalition that is backing the offensive with airstrikes, training and advice praised Friday’s advances.

“Work still needs to be done, but Daesh days in Mosul are quickly coming to an end,” US Air Force Col. John Dorrian said in a statement.

Iraqi forces have now recaptured most districts in eastern Mosul, nearly three months into a US-backed offensive, which accelerated at the turn of the year with new tactics and better coordination.
They aim to take full control of the eastern bank of the Tigris, which bisects Mosul from north to south, before launching attacks on the western side still fully in Daesh hands.

Driving the ultra-hardline group out of its Mosul stronghold will probably spell the end for the Iraqi side of the caliphate it declared in 2014 which stretches into Syria.

Airstrike kills 30 in Mosul

An airstrike on a district held by ISIS targeting the house of senior militant Harbi Abdel Qader in the Iraqi city of Mosul killed up to 30 civilians, residents reported to Reuters.

Abdel Qader was not in the building at the time, but several members of his family died, one resident said late on Friday.

The witnesses said they saw at least three missiles hit the western Mosul al-Jadida area on Thursday.

They said it was not immediately clear if the attack was carried out by the U.S.-led coalition fighting ISIS, or by Iraqi forces that have been making advances against the jihadists in the city.

Iraq Body Count (IBC), a group run by academics and peace activists that has been counting violent deaths in the country since 2003, said 21 to 25 civilians were reported killed on Thursday in a strike on that area.

Iraqi forces have been fighting for months to drive ISIS group out of Mosul, the jihadists’ last major stronghold in Iraq.

In this regard, Iraqi special forces retook the eastern edge of a third bridge in Mosul Saturday and a cluster of buildings inside Mosul university, according to a senior Iraqi officer overseeing the operation.

Iraqi forces now control the eastern sides of three of the city’s five bridges that span the Tigris river connecting Mosul’s east to west. Warplanes from the U.S.-led coalition bombed the city’s bridges late last year in an effort to isolate ISIS fighters in the city’s east by disrupting resupply routes.

At Mosul University, senior commanders said that Iraqi forces have secured more than half of the campus Saturday amid stiff resistance, but clashes were ongoing into the afternoon. Iraqi forces entered the university from the southeast Friday morning and by nightfall had secured a handful of buildings, Brig. Gen. Haider Fadhil and Lt. Gen. Abdul-Wahab al-Saadi said on a tour of the university Saturday.

“We watched all the ISIS fighters gather in that building, so we blew it up,” said special forces Sgt. Maj. Haytham Ghani pointing to one of the blackened technical college buildings where charred desks could be seen inside. “You can still see some of their corpses,” he added.

Thick clouds of black smoke rose from the middle of the sprawling complex Saturday morning. By afternoon, clashes had intensified with volleys of sniper and mortar fire targeting the advancing Iraqi forces. Convoys of Iraqi Humvees snaked through the campus, pausing for artillery and airstrikes to clear snipers perched within classrooms, dormitories and behind the trees that line the campus streets.

Head of Iraq’s Counter Terrorism Service (CTS) Sami al-Aridhi said that Iraqi forces also found chemical substances ISIS had used to try to make weapons.

The United Nations says the militants seized nuclear materials used for scientific research from the university when they overran Mosul and vast areas of northern Iraq and eastern Syria in 2014.

ISIS fighters have used chemical agents including mustard gas in a number of attacks in Iraq and Syria, U.S. officials, rights groups and residents say.

As Iraqi forces have closed in on the Tigris river that roughly divides Mosul into eastern and western halves, their pace has quickened. ISIS defenses in the city’s east appear to be thinning and unlike in the surrounding neighborhoods, Iraqi officers said they believe Mosul university and recently retaken government buildings are largely empty of civilians — allowing them to use air cover more liberally.

The massive operation to retake Mosul from ISIS was launched in October. Since then Iraqi forces have slowly clawed back more than a third of the city. ISIS maintains has tight control of the city’s western half where Iraqi forces will likely encounter another wave of heavy ISIS resistance. The west of the city is home to some of Mosul’s densest neighborhoods and an estimated 700,000 civilians.

Hacker accesses ISIS's radio channel and taunts Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi by saying: 'Mosul will be liberated'

[DailyMail] An anonymous radio hacker has embarrassed ISIS by breaking onto their frequency and sending a message to Daesh leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi that 'Mosul will be liberated'.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Russia ‘invites Trump team’ to Syria talks
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Russia has invited Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
's incoming administration to attend upcoming Syrian peace talks in Kazakhstan, The Washington Post reported Friday, bypassing the B.O. regime which has been notably absent from the process.

The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
, which is co-hosting the talks with Russia, has said Washington would be asked to join the talks being held in the Kazakh capital Astana, likely on January 23. But there has been no confirmation from Moscow, and the current US administration said Friday it had not been asked to take part.

"We have not received any kind of formal invitation to the meeting," said State Department front man Mark Toner.

"But if we do receive an invitation, we will certainly make a recommendation" to Trump's incoming administration to honor it, he said.
How lovely that they won't be distracted from packing up their things by having to forward the message.
The timetable would put the meeting just three days after the Republican president-elect takes office on January 20, succeeding the Democrat Barack Obama
I inhaled. That was the point...
Invitations to the talks have yet to be sent out, and the format of the discussions remains unclear.

But according to The Washington Post, the Russian ambassador to Washington, Sergey Kislyak, extended an invitation to attend the upcoming talks in a December 28 telephone conversation with Trump's incoming national security advisor Michael Flynn. The Post quoted an unidentified official with Trump's transition team as saying that "no decision was made" during the call, adding: "I don't have anything additional on US attendance at this time."

The talks on the future of Syria were announced in late December after a nationwide ceasefire was secured. They are being organized for the first time without the involvement of Washington, which had led all the international discussions to resolve the Syrian crisis in recent years.
No, they are being organized without the involvement of the Obama team, who happen to still be in the nation's capitol. The new government has been making its presence felt in ways clearly not visible to the mavens at the Washington Post, and therefore to their readers.
Though the United States has not been a direct party to this specific initiative, Toner said, "we have been in close contact with both the Russians and the Turks as this has gone forward."
So we see.
"And, we would encourage the incoming administration to continue to pursue those efforts."

Iran, an ally of Syrian Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
The Scourge of Hama...
, is also involved in setting up talks aimed at paving the way to an end of the nearly six-year conflict.

Russia, which is counting on improved relations with the United States under the Trump presidency after strains with Obama, refused Friday to say whether Washington should be invited to Astana.

Russia, a key Assad ally, is "interested in the broadest possible representation of the parties who have a bearing on the prospects of a political settlement in Syria," Kremlin front man Dmitry Peskov said.

The Astana meeting should serve as a preamble to the next round of peace negotiations between the Syrian government and opposition in Geneva on February 8 under the auspices of the United Nations
...boodling on the grand scale...
"Our recommendation would be -- and we've said this before -- that we support any effort aimed at getting political negotiations back up and running in Geneva and aimed at solidifying the cease-fire in Syria," the US State Department front man said.
