2017 terror forecast for US, Europe 'alarming,' says House report (Video)
[FOX] White House blasts media coverage of terror attacks

The U.S. and European terror forecast for 2017 'looks alarming,' in part because of increased pressure on ISIS and other terror groups on their home turf, according to a monthly assessment by House lawmakers.

The House Homeland Security Committee’s February "Terror Threat Snapshot" report cited two homegrown terror attacks in January and officials predicted efforts to crush foreign terror groups, while laudable, could spur more attacks to American soil.

"At this rate, the forecast for 2017 looks alarming," warns the report, citing an "unprecedented spike in the homegrown terror threat, primarily driven by the rise of ISIS."

Officials predicted necessary efforts to crush foreign terror groups could actually spur more attacks on Western soil. Coming attacks in the U.S. and Europe could be carried out by so-called lone wolves as well as homegrown terrorists who return from fighting in such places as Iraq, Syria and Somalia.

#1  Your medua is censored so you won'tknow about the jihad terror attacks. You will be told only of the large ones that are impossible to hide and then you will not be told anything that would identify the attackers as islamist.

This will disarm the natural immune response of society to demand our leaders limit muslim migration and you will get the farce that is going on right now

Ignorant left protesters runing around in hijabs saying "i stand with muslims"

Because they don't know

Because media was censored

Because of fear of islamofauxbia backlash

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Possible terr designation for Iran's Revolutionary Guard sparks concerns (Video)
[FOX] Defense and intelligence officials have reportedly expressed concern over the possiblity that the Trump administration will at some point designate Iran’s Revolutionary Guard a terrorist organization.

Officials said the designation could put U.S. troops in danger in Iraq and hurt the overall fight against the Islamic State, The Washington Post reported Wednesday. The White House is weighing whether to designate the Muslim Brotherhood-- along with the revolutionary guard-- as terrorist organizations.

A senior White House official told The Post was still being mulled over. The White House has sought to take a hard stance against Iran and has even threatened fresh sanctions over Iran’s recent missile tests.

"There are so many second, third and fifth order of facts with every decision, as we see it, and so I think that this is an area where, rightly so, we have to be very smart... This all has to do with [Iran’s] behavior. What we have to do is figure out what are the right things to consider. We consider a lot of things. What we actually decide to do is different," the White House official said.

White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer declined to say whether the White House would take steps against either the Muslim Brotherhood or the IRGC, The Wall Street Journal reported.

Terror Networks
The Muslim Brotherhood Is – and Must be Designated as – a Terrorist Organization
[Center for Security Policy] The next, necessary step in the national security course-correction President Donald Trump has promised requires the designation of the Muslim Brotherhood as what it is ‐ a terrorist organization.

For years, presidents of both parties have labored under the illusion that the Brothers were actually useful and reliable "partners" in countering what was euphemistically known as "violent extremism." Among other things, that epic strategic mistake prompted President Obama to work with the Muslim Brotherhood to supplant friendly governments across the Middle East.

President Trump’s predecessors also legitimated and enabled the Brotherhood’s operatives here. Yet, they are Sharia-supremacists, who share completely the ideology and agenda of terrorist organizations like al Qaeda, the Islamic State and Boko Haram.

Mr. Trump’s oath of office requires him to defend our Constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic. To do so, he must designate the terrorist Muslim Brotherhood.

Pay is flowing so generously at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) that hundreds of bureaucrats there receive more than most members of Congress.

The Senate majority and minority leaders are paid $193,000 annually. Two hundred and one CFPB employees outdo Sens. Mitch McConnell and Charles Schumer in pay.

Speaker of the House Paul Ryan of Wisconsin receives $223,000 per year, but that’s less than what 54 CFPB employees are paid.

Another 170 CFPB employees earn more than the secretaries of defense and state, the attorney general and the director of national intelligence. All cabinet salaries are capped at $199,700, but not at the bureau. Thirty-nine CFPB employees earn more than the $230,000 paid to Vice President Mike Pence.

#5  This is the "black voter suppression" case that Jeff Sessions was prosecuting. The allegations of racism stem from a 1985 voter fraud prosecution that then-U.S. Attorney Sessions brought at the behest of African Americans who feared other African Americans’ votes were being stolen to elect one set of African-American candidates over another. Several African Americans, including Albert Turner who was an aide to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., were the defendants.
There wasn’t much dispute on the facts of the case: Albert Turner forged, voted for, requested and/or redelivered absentee ballots for almost 500 voters – almost entirely African Americans –against his African-American political opponents. There are two interpretations of what happened here: was the conduct proxy voting or voter assistance?

Conservatives grow impatient over Obamacare, demand repeal this spring to appease voters
[Breitbart] Jim Jordan: Further delay is ’not what we told the voters.'

Congress must hurry up and repeal Obamacare this spring to avoid the wrath of voters who expected Republicans to ease the anxiety about soaring rates and dwindling insurance options in their home states, conservative lawmakers said Wednesday.

Replacing the Affordable Care Act’s heavy mandates with free market reforms is crucial, they said, but it can wait. What can’t wait is a flat repeal, which the conservatives said needs to happen "within the next two or three months."

"I think repeal becomes a lot more difficult if you load it down with all the heavy details involving what comes next, where we don’t have a whole lot of consensus," Sen. Mike Lee, Utah Republican, said at a roundtable meeting hosted by the conservative Heritage Foundation.

He is at odds with Republican leaders, who have said they want to have a replacement in hand when they repeal the 2010 law. They say insurance markets need the certainty of knowing what comes next.

#4  Don't try to do it all at once. You'll just pooch it up. Baby steps.
1) Repeal the mandate
2) Make it possible to by a plan the customer wants
3) Make it legal to sell insurance across state lines

#6  If the freaking congress would repeal McCarran Ferguson it would all start to work well enough that repealing the mandate would solve the most painful parts of Obumblecare(?) until a careful crafted series of repeals were inacted.

McCarran Ferguson was passed in 1941 giving regulatory control of Insurance to the states. If McCarran Ferguson were repealed, insurance would come under interstate commerce and insurance could be sold across state lines and change the dynamic on rate setting.

Boeing wins $13.8 billion Singapore Airlines order for wide-body jets
[Reuters] Singapore Airlines (SIA) (SIAL.SI) announced a $13.8 billion order to buy 39 Boeing (BA.N) wide-body aircraft as it pursues expansion opportunities, a setback for the U.S. planemaker's rival Airbus Group (AIR.PA) in the fight for long-term orders.

Airbus Group has flagged its intention to build a bigger version of its A350, although these plans have been placed on hold amid uncertainty over demand for wide-body jets.

In a statement on Thursday, SIA said it agreed to place firm orders with Boeing for 20 777-9s and 19 787-10s to tap additional growth and for fleet modernization through the next decade.

White House Objects to Drudge Criticism: GOP Needs Time to Replace ‘Mammoth' Obamacare
[Breitbart] Online journalist Matt Drudge of the Drudge Report criticized Republicans on Twitter for their sluggish momentum in Washington D.C., suggesting that they be "sued for fraud" after promising immediate action on repealing Obamacare and important tax policy.

Drudge also questioned the Trump administration’s committment to an "executive order targeting ’conflict minerals'" but not getting rid of the Obamacare tax penalty.

"I think it’s hardly stalling," Spicer said, after Breitbart News asked him to react to Drudge’s assessment.
Would it be too much to ask to see a copy of an outline, a preliminary plan ?
He defended the Republican party’s pace on important issues like Obamacare.

"I think it’s a mammoth thing to repeal and replace," Spicer said, reassuring supporters that the president was still committed to his promise.

#3  "I think it’s a mammoth thing to repeal and replace,"

If you repeal it, it doesn't matter how big it is. What will it be replaced by? Something equally mammoth? Hardly sounds like something the feds should get involved with, especially since the Constitution is only four pages long.
Posted by: gorb || 02/09/2017 11:15 Comments || Top||

#4  I fail to see the point in replacing ObummerCare with anything at all. Let the insurance companies compete with each other in the most dog eat dog manner and that will benefit the consumer more than anything the government can possibly do. The constitution does not guarantee health care. The government can only muck it up.

#5  ACA is a beast containing everything from loans and incentives for physicians to convert to electronic health records to how doctors are reimbursed under Medicare.

After studying ACA ad nauseum working on my doctorate in health administration, I REALLY want to see this abortion of legislation thrown on the dust bin of history with its namesake. BUT I have to say the legislation is insidious with its "tendrils everywhere". An abrupt swinging of the axe could cause chaos in our health care system.

We need to repeal it but we should do it in a more reasoned, logical, deliberate method than the approach used by Pelosi and Reid to pass it which was to just jamb the thing out without careful regard for its contents. The bill is a mess but repealing it will take months...1100 pages, 15000 employees hired to enforce it, thousands of regulations written to enable it...it is a mess...and you don't clean up a mess without getting some on your hands.

The Pubs need to step up and do some dirty work and leave their standing Thursday lunch reservations at Sans Souci alone.

POTUS planning to send ISIS to Gitmo with new executive order
[Right Scoop] The Trump White House is nearing completion of an order that would direct the Pentagon to bring future Islamic State detainees to the Guantánamo Bay prison, despite warnings from national security officials and legal scholars that doing so risks undermining the effort to combat the group, according to administration officials and a draft executive order obtained by The New York Times.

White House officials have detailed their thinking about a new detainee policy in an evolving series of drafts of an executive order being circulated among national security officials for comment. While previous versions have shown that the draft has undergone many changes ‐ including dropping language about reviving C.I.A. prisons ‐ the plan to add Islamic State detainees to the Guantánamo population has remained constant.

The latest version of the draft, which circulated this week, would direct Defense Secretary Jim Mattis to use Guantánamo to detain suspected members of "Al Qaeda, the Taliban, and associated forces, including individuals and networks associated with the Islamic State."

Patronage Feather Merchants flee Pentagon; Trump left with scores of vacancies to fill
[Wash Times] The Pentagon has been stripped of almost all of its political appointees from the Obama administration, but an uncertain Senate future awaits the candidates whom President Trump will nominate to remake the armed forces in his image.

Of Mr. Obama’s 163 political appointees at election time, who included Senate-confirmed service secretaries, undersecretaries and assistant secretaries, only 16 remain at the Defense Department, according to a Pentagon statement to The Washington Times.

The exodus might be considered normal in the transfer of power: Political appointees are required to turn in their resignations in December.

But Washington’s bitter political climate is far different today from the last transfer of power in 2009. Senate Democrats are resisting Mr. Trump and his agenda via the confirmation process. There is a chance that some of the Defense Department’s 53 appointed positions requiring Senate confirmation will be vacant for a long time.

The vacancies give Mr. Trump an opportunity to select men and women who will provide the leadership, policies and catalyst for his two main priorities: rebuilding the military and defeating the Islamic State terrorist group.

Bill Kristol Says ‘Lazy' White Working Class Should Be Replaced By ‘New Americans'
[Daily Caller] Weekly Standard editor-at-large Bill Kristol said Tuesday afternoon that the white working class should be replaced by immigrants as they have become "decadent, lazy" and "spoiled."

"Look, to be totally honest, if things are so bad as you say with the white working class, don’t you want to get new Americans in?" Kristol told author Charles Murray during an event hosted by the American Enterprise Institute titled "It Came Apart: What’s Next for a Fractured Culture." Murray recently wrote a book, entitled "Coming Apart," which focuses on the cultural separation between the wealthiest and most educated white Americans and the poorest and least educated white Americans.

Before delving into his theory about replacing the white working class, Kristol said that he hopes "this thing isn’t being videotaped or ever shown anywhere. Whatever tiny, pathetic future I have is going to totally collapse." The event was filmed by AEI, but as of press time is marked "unlisted" on the think tank’s YouTube channel, so that it doesn’t come up in search results.

#5  One thing I do see in the "White, working class" is a lack of respect for education on the part of some of its members. There is still a lingering distrust, or even disparging of education. Note I said some, not all. I think some of this comes from the fact that political elites on both sides and other educated professionals who largely associate with their own see the working poor, the working class and even trades people as knuckle dragging, wife beating, "hold my beer" rednecks.

#8  In the early 20th century Western nations had not yet instituted the massive internal redistribution systems known today as the welfare state.

Back then emigration/immigration was a sink-or-swim proposition. Where immigration made no economic sense it did not happen.

Immigration that amounts to immigrants tapping into domestic redistribution systems, perhaps even transferring part of the welfare payments to their home countries as remittances isn't viable.

See Brexit&Trump.

My father-in-law worked in a Bethleham Steel plant that closed because of that, directly throwing 10,000 out of work, plus as I recall another 20,000 or so of outside support jobs -- suppliers and pubs, etc.

But the 1970s are now half a century in the past, and for the most part that arrangement between powerful unions and their company management is, too.

Nominee Gorsuch calls DJT judge attacks 'demoralizing' - NEXT please.
[Guardian] Neil Gorsuch, Donald Trump’s nominee to the supreme court, called the president’s tweet attacking the federal district court judge James Robart "disheartening and demoralizing", his spokesman has confirmed.

Gorsuch criticized Trump in a private meeting with Senator Richard Blumenthal on Wednesday.

Gorsuch’s spokesman, Ron Bonjean, confirmed to the Guardian that the supreme court nominee called Trump’s tweet attacking Robart "disheartening and demoralizing".

Any body of government that sits for life and is 'de facto' above accountability is an aristocracy. That is fundamentally counter to a republic. An 'independent' judiciary is an aristocracy. Checks and balances means you get checked and called out every now and then. I don't care how you feel. Maybe you need to make an assessment that you should be running for office rather than sitting on the bench if you want to exercise some forms of power. That is the overall problem that needs to be addressed. Term limits for everyone.

EU May Punish States for Failing to Take Refugees

[AnNahar] The EU warned Wednesday that it will consider punishing member states next month if they fail to share the burden of asylum seekers stranded in Greece and Italy. European Commission vice president Frans Timmermans criticized the bloc for having so far admitted only 12,000 of the 160,000 Syrian and other refugees required to be relocated from Greece and Italy to other EU countries by September this year.

He said Brussels still hoped "peer pressure" would convince recalcitrant countries, but that it would consider penalties if there had been no progress by the time its next report on the issue comes out in March.

EU countries can be hit with large financial penalties by the commission, the executive arm of the 28-nation bloc, if they break the union's rules.

Timmermans added that it was "highly unfair" to leave overstretched Greece and Italy to try to persuade other countries, particularly Eastern European states where there is resistance to Muslim immigration.

Searches in Germany, Britain focused on Islamist suspects: Prosecutor

[AlAhram] German authorities searched homes and other properties in the German state of North-Rhine Westphalia and Britain on Wednesday to gather evidence about two suspects believed to have supported the Islamist group "Jabhat al-Nusra," the chief federal prosecutor's office said.

"The two suspects are believed to have supported the foreign terrorist group JAN for several years," the office said in a statement.

They allegedly collected donations for the Islamist group and supplied ambulances, medical equipment and medication through groups called "Medicine with Heart" and "Medicine without Borders," it said. There was no mention of any specific attack preparations in the case.

Germany arrests Syrian IS suspect accused of rape

[AlAhram] German police on Tuesday arrested a Syrian man on suspicion of belonging to the Islamic State (IS) militant group and of raping a woman as she attempted to flee an IS-held area in Syria with her children, officials said. The 31-year-old suspect, named as Akram A., was detained in the northeastern state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomeria, the federal prosecutor's office said in a statement.

Prosecutors allege that he manned a checkpoint in Syria that sought to prevent citizens from escaping IS-controlled territory. In early 2016, he stopped a woman who was trying to flee with her children, they said.

"Under the pretext of obtaining the necessary 'exit permit', the accused lured her to a house and raped her," prosecutors said in the statement.

The rape could amount to a war crime, they added.

Spain: 2 alleged ISIS recruiters detained near Barcelona

[Ynet] Spain's Interior Ministry says two Moroccan who are accused of indoctrination in Islamist extremism and recruiting others have been detained in Barcelona. The ministry said in a statement that the men, aged 25 and 27, allegedly raised money through drug trafficking and theft to support the Islamic State group. Agents of Spain's Guardia Civil police were searching the men's apartment on Tuesday morning in Badalona, a city next to Barcelona, for further evidence.

Hungary plans to detain migrants while asylum requests assessed

[Ynet] Hungary plans to detain migrants while their asylum requests are assessed, a ruling party lawmaker said on Wednesday, a proposal that human rights campaigners said could be illegal. The plan will be part of the spring legislative agenda of the Fidesz party of Prime Minister Viktor Orban, whose popular hardline stance on immigration may help him retain power at an election early next year.

Under the plan, migrants whose asylum applications are not immediately rejected would no longer be allowed to move freely while their requests are processed, Fidesz parliamentary group leader Lajos Kosa told a news conference.

Dem IT geeks Abid, Imran, and Jamal Awan may still be working
[PJ] At least two House IT staffers are reportedly under active criminal investigation by the U.S. Capitol Police for stealing equipment and data and remain employed Tuesday, amid mounting questions regarding how they were able to pass their background checks.

On Saturday, The Daily Caller reported that three brothers -- Abid, Imran, and Jamal Awan -- were "abruptly relieved of their duties on suspicion that they accessed congressional computers without permission." However, some are still working because, according to a report in Politico Monday, the brothers are "shared employees" -- employees hired by multiple offices which use them as needed for IT services. Each office would need to fire them, and "multiple Democrat lawmakers" have not yet terminated the employment of each staffer.

The three brothers were barred from computer networks at the House of Representatives last Thursday, according to the Daily Caller.

However...

According to a congressional source on the Hill, the House passed a rule last year requiring all employees with access to IT to pass background checks in order to flag potential problems such as the credit and legal issues... FBI background checks were applied to all IT employees retroactively. The only way around a background check would have been if a "hiring authority" in a congressional office had signed a waiver attesting to the "trustworthiness and judgment" of the privileged user.

Belgian alarm over spread of Saudi-backed hardline Islam
[EN.ZAMANALWSL.NET] Belgium's terror monitoring centre has expressed concern
...meaning the brow was mildly wrinkled, the eyebrows drawn slightly together, and a thoughtful expression assumed, not that anything was actually done or indeed that any thought was actually expended...
s about the spread of Saudi- and Gulf-backed fundamentalist Islam in the country's mosques, according to an official report published in local media Wednesday.

The OCAM national crisis centre said the austere Sunni doctrine of Wahhabism preached in an increasing number of Belgian mosques was getting financial support from Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
and the Gulf states, according to the report quoted in Phlegmish-language daily De Standaard.

Belgium has been on high alert since three jacket wallahs attacked Zaventem Airport and the Brussels metro system in March 2016, killing 32 people.

"We believe that a growing number of mosques and Islamic centres in Belgium, like the rest of Europe, are under the influence of Wahhabism, the Salafist missionary apparatus," the centre said.

"We also note that the imams of these mosques are regularly being 'salafised' or are already 'salafised'," it added.

Saudi Arabia is the cradle of Wahhabism, which has been accused of inspiring holy warrior ideologies across the Moslem world.

The Belgian official report said Saudi authorities had set up a "generous" bursary scheme for Moslem students from other countries.

"They are strongly encouraged to become imams in their Belgian mosques or be active in proselytising in Belgium or more widely in French-speaking or Dutch-speaking areas," it said, as cited by De Standaard daily.

"The Saudi authorities and the Wahhabist establishment have clearly settled on this method to reinforce the influence of the doctrine and practice of Wahhabism in Moslem communities in Europe," it said.

Belgium has a long-running problem with radicalisation, producing what officials say is the highest number of jihadists going to fight in Syria and Iraq in proportion to its population of any EU country.

EXCLUSIVE: Iranian Boat Had Guns Pointed at U.S. Ship, Commander Says
Iranian forces in a fast-attack boat had their guns pointed right at a U.S. destroyer as it sped directly towards the ship, in a dangerous encounter in January, a U.S. Navy captain said.

Fearing collision, U.S. Navy Cmdr. Marc Davis was eventually forced to fire three warning shots from the ship’s .50 caliber guns, he said in a recent one-on-one interview with Breitbart News, where he shared new details about the incident.

The contact began early Sunday morning on January 8 when one of four Iranian boats harassing the Mahan began speeding straight towards the destroyer and its 330 sailors onboard, forcing a series of attempts to get it to stop.

"On that day, we were transiting into the Arabian Gulf through the Strait of Hormuz," Davis recalled, referring to the narrow waterway, which is in international waters, but which Iran considers its territory.

The interaction with the Iranian vessels started very late the night before on Saturday, and occurred all evening and early morning. There were six interactions -- all what he would deem in Navy terms "safe and professional."

He said, "it was finally sunrise, so it was early in the morning the following day" when the last interaction occurred.

#6  ...The fact that the Mahan's skipper was doing this brief is a sign - under the Obama Administration, some 07 at the Pentagon would be giving a 'summary', but this time we heard it from the man on the scene.

Blow the lead boat into fish chum, and then tell the Iranians that anything even remotely resembling a military response anywhere on the planet will be met with overwhelming force.

Geek Alert: Actor Richard Hatch dies at 71
You liked him as Captain Apollo in the original series, you'll love him as the heavy Tom Zarek in the reboot series.

RIP, Tom Zarek

Tributes are being paid to actor Richard Hatch, who has died from pancreatic cancer at the age of 71.

He was the only actor to appear in both the original series of Battlestar Galactica and its more recent reboot.

Hatch played Captain Apollo in the original sci-fi series and a different character - Tom Zarek - in the reboot from 2004 to 2009.

Star Trek actor George Takei wrote on Twitter: "Rest with the galactic stars, Richard Hatch."

Ronald D Moore, who created the rebooted version of Battlestar Galactica, described Hatch as "a good man, a gracious man, and a consummate professional".

"His passing is a heavy blow to the entire BSG family," Moore added.

Hatch's son Paul confirmed his father's death in a message posted on the actor's website: "He died peacefully with his family and friends at his side after a battle with pancreatic cancer."

Israel uncovers West Bank-Gaza terror cash pipeline
[IsraelTimes] The Shin Bet security service said Wednesday that it had uncovered a Hamas, a contraction of the Arabic words for "frothing at the mouth", and Islamic Jihad

Operations were conducted out of Egypt until 1981 when the group was exiled after the assassination of President Anwar Sadat. operation to transfer cash from the Gazoo Strip to operatives in the West Bank.

The Gazoo-based terror organizations would send debit cards loaded with funds, either via the mail or smuggled by couriers through the Erez Crossing from Gazoo into Israel.

West Bank members then withdrew the money from ATMs for use to fund terror attacks, the Shin Bet said.

Two suspects from Gazoo and the West Bank were detained by Israeli security forces for questioning during November and December, according to a Shin Bet statement.

Gazoo City resident Salim Tutah, 26, received a permit to enter Israel to work as a tractor driver for a Paleostinian contractor doing projects for the american government aid agency USAID in the West Bank.

Tutah confessed during interrogation to handing over a debit card loaded with thousands of shekels designated for the Islamic Jihad group. He had received the card from Hamas operatives on the Paleostinian side of the Erez Crossing.

Ismail Huamda, 26, a Hamas member from the village of al-Samu near Hebron, received another debit card through a courier and was ordered to withdraw funds, the agency said.

The Shin Bet said this was another example of the terror group "cynically exploiting" the fact that Israel allows thousands of Gazoo residents to enter Israel for humanitarian needs.

Syrian regime, rebels swap 112 prisoners in Hama province
[EN.ZAMANALWSL.NET] The Syrian government and rebel groups swapped dozens of women prisoners and hostages, some of them with their children, in Hama province Tuesday evening, pro-opposition activists said.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a British-based opposition-aligned group, said government representatives and rebel officials exchanged 112 women in the rebel-held Qalaat al-Madiq town in rural Hama. Many were tossed into the calaboose for years.

About half were released from government prisons and then taken to opposition-held areas, the Observatory said.

In return, the others were set free by various rebel groups and shuttled to government-controlled areas along the coast.

Such exchanges were rare in the nearly six-year-old war, but had been occuring more often in recent months, the Observatory said.

Busted! CNN caught planting debate questions… AGAIN!?
"Last night, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz and Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders squared off in a public debate on the future of Obamacare.

Only problem? It was hosted by CNN ‐ and supporters of President Donald Trump on social media claim they found evidence the network rigged the debate... again!

"Cruz, a Texas Republican and Affordable Care Act opponent, wants to lower health care costs by increasing competition in the health insurance industry. Sanders, a Vermont independent and one of the architects of the Affordable Care Act, wants a government-run, single-payer system to compete with insurance companies to lower costs," the Boston Herald reported on the showdown.

But accusations have surfaced that the intellectual square-off wasn’t on neutral ground, as was promised.

Conservative viewers claim they found proof CNN was planting audience questions.

Defiant Iran test-fires another missile days after US warning
[IsraelTimes] Iran has reportedly test-fired another missile on Wednesday, just days after a series of warnings from the Trump administration that it was "on notice" for previous ballistic missile tests and that a military response to such actions was under consideration.

According to a Fox News report, a US official said the test on Wednesday was of a short-range surface-to-air missile, called Mersad, which impacted 56-kilometer (35 miles) away.

The test came on the same day US officials told Rooters that the White House was considering a proposal that could lead to naming Iran’s most powerful military and political institution, the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps, as a terrorist organization.

The proposal is reportedly one of many being weighed as part of an overall Iran policy review, amid a tougher line on Tehran since the Trump administration came into office.

On Friday, Washington slapped sanctions on more than two dozen people and companies from the Persian Gulf to China, in response to Iran test-firing late last month a 4,000-kilometer (2,500-mile) ballistic missile capable of carrying a nuclear warhead, as well as a home-made cruise missile with the same capabilities, acts which prompted an emergency UN Security Council session and an Israeli demand by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to reimpose sanctions.

Violence roils Paris for 4th night in row, dozen held
[OMANTRIBUNE] French police have tossed in the clink
Youse'll never take me alive coppers!... [BANG!]... Ow!... I quit!
a dozen people in a fourth straight night of confrontation with youths in suburbs, north of Gay Paree, with tension sparked by accusations of police violence spreading to new areas, a police representative said.

Yves Lefebvre told franceinfo public radio that about 10 vehicles were torched as young people hurled petrol bombs in standoffs with law-enforcement officers in a region north of the capital where more serious rioting drew world-wide attention in 2005.

"There were further violent showdowns overnight," Lefebvre said.

While much more limited than 12 years ago, the unrest served as a reminder of the simmering tension in neighbourhoods with higher than average unemployment and large immigrant populations.

La Belle Franceinfo said a bus driver was treated for minor injuries after his vehicle was hit by a petrol bomb.

"Sadly these neighbourhoods have been turned into ghettos," Lefebvre of the SGP police union said, saying police were not sufficiently trained or equipped to deal with life in the gritty high-rise housing sprawls in the region ringing Gay Paree.

The trouble began in Aulnay-sous-Bois several days ago after four coppers were suspended pending an inquiry into accusations they had used excessive force while arresting a 22-year-old man there.

One of the coppers involved in the man’s arrest on February 2 has been placed under formal investigation for suspected rape and three others for unnecessary violence.

President Francois Hollande
...the Socialist president of La Belle France, an economic bad joke for la Belle France but seemingly a foreign policy realist...
visited the victim on Tuesday at the Aulnay hospital where he is being treated for injuries.

Lefebvre said the skirmishes on Tuesday night were mainly in towns around Aulnay-sous-Bois, which itself was relatively calm.

A judge will determine later on Wednesday whether those detained would have to remain in jug.

Prosecutors said the case was not related to its investigations into the Gay Paree attacks of November 2015 and the Brussels bombings in March 2016.

British MPs Approve Bill to Start Brexit
[An Nahar] British MPs overwhelmingly backed a bill on Wednesday empowering Prime Minister Theresa May to start negotiations on leaving the European Union
...the successor to the Holy Roman Empire, only without the Hapsburgs and the nifty uniforms and the dancing...
, bringing Brexit a significant step closer.

Members of the House of Commons voted by 494 votes to 122 for a law enabling May to trigger Article 50 of the EU's Lisbon Treaty, which begins two years of talks on pulling out of the 28-nation bloc.

The unamended two-clause bill now moves to the House of Lords, where there may be more opposition from unelected peers -- and where May's Conservative party does not have a majority.

But its passage through the Commons, where two-thirds of MPs had campaigned against Brexit ahead of the June referendum, puts May on course to begin the withdrawal process by the end of March, as she has vowed.

"This, elementally, is a straightforward bill which serves only to give the prime minister the power to trigger Article 50 and thereby respect the result of the referendum," said Brexit minister David Jones.

2 die in bomb attack near Ramadi

Anbar (IraqiNews.com) An army officer and a lower rank soldier were killed on Wednesday when a roadside bomb exploded on a highway wast of Anbar, according to a security source.

The explosive device exploded when an army patrol was passing on a highway west of Ramadi, a security source in the province told Alsumaria News.

Islamic State has stepped attacks across Iraq coinciding with defeats it has been sustaining in Mosul, its largest stronghold in Iraq of which Iraqi government troops have recaptured a half since October.

The group has maintained smaller strongholds in western Anbar towns since 2014, but no official campaign has been declared yet by the government to drive militants out of those regions as the Iraqi government invests most of its military effort in Mosul. Anbar’s security command, backed by tribal troops, launched early January a brief onslaught against the Islamic State in western Anbar, and managed retake a few villages before halting again.

Iraqi and U.S-led coalition air forces regularly carry out airstrikes targeting IS hideouts in western Anbar, killing several militants and destroying defensive facilities belonging to the extremist group.

On Tuesday, a roadside bomb planted at al-Sakkar region, west of the province, killed two army personnel.

Italy Police Hunt Anti-Pope Plotters
Have they looked in Avignon?
[An Nahar] Italian police were on the hunt Monday for the authors of anti-pope posters which have been slapped around Rome, amid suspicions the campaign may be linked to an arch-conservative wing of the Catholic Church.

Dozens of the illegal fliers appeared mysteriously around the Italian capital Saturday picturing a stern-looking Pope Francis, a list of accusations against him, and the words "Where's your mercy?" -- turning the pontiff's call for a more merciful church back on him.

Police were trawling through security camera footage to track down the culprits as Rome city council said it had pulled down 200 posters while those remaining had been covered up.

No group took credit for the stunt, but Vatican watchers said the fact the main complaint referred to the "decapitation" of the Knights of Malta made it likely they came from conservative quarters.

The posters appeared on the same day that Francis appointed his own special delegate to the ancient aristocratic order, after stepping in to stop the firing of its Grand Chancellor, in a move that left traditionalists spitting.

The move publicly sidelined prominent U.S. conservative Cardinal Raymond Burke, who has been outspoken in his disapproval of Francis' efforts to reform Church teaching on questions related to the family, marriage and divorce.

"Ah Francis, you've taken over congregations, removed priests, decapitated the Order of Malta and the Franciscans of the Immaculate, ignored Cardinals... but where's your mercy?" it reads.

24 Houthis die in Mokha fighting
ADEN, Yemen: Thirty-two combatants were killed Wednesday in the battle for a key coastal town in western Yemen between government forces and Shiite Houthi insurgents, officials said.

The deaths occurred as forces loyal to President Abedrabbo Masnour Hadi advanced into neighborhoods of Mokha and Houthis retreated to northern and western parts of the town, military sources said.

Loyalists backed by the firepower of a Saudi-led Arab coalition entered the strategic port town in late January as part of their efforts to drive the rebels away from the Red Sea coast.

The clashes on Wednesday left dead 24 Houthi insurgents, including 12 whose bodies were taken a hospital in Mokha, medical officials said.

The other 12 were rebels whose remains were found by advancing troops and later buried in Mokha, a loyalist military official said.

Eight soldiers were killed, military and medical officials said.
Mokha was Yemen’s main port serving as its export hub for coffee until it was overtaken by Aden and Hodeida in the 19th century.

Forces supporting Hadi, backed by the coalition, began a major offensive on January 7 to recapture the coastline overlooking the strategic Bab Al-Mandab Strait.

More than 400 combatants have been killed since government forces launched their drive up the Red Sea coastline.

LHC dismisses plea for Hafiz Saeed’s release
[DAWN] The Lahore High Court on Tuesday dismissed a habeas corpus petition filed by a lawyer challenging detention of Jamatud Dawa chief Hafiz Saeed
...founder of Lashkar-e-Taiba and its false-mustache offshoot Jamaat-ud-Dawa. The United Nations declared the JuD a terrorist organization in 2008 and Hafiz Saeed a terrorist as its leader. Hafiz, JuD and LeT are wholly-owned subsidiaries of the Pak intel apparatus, so that amounted to squat...
Justice Erum Sajjad Gull heard the petition of Advocate Sarfraz Hussain as objection case and upheld an objection put by the registrar office on its maintainability. The office had stated that the petitioner had not furnished the impugned notification of Saeed’s detention.

During the hearing, Advocate A.K Dogar appeared before the court and stated that a separate petition would be filed soon on behalf of Hafiz Saeed challenging his detention.

Advocate Hussain had contended that Hafiz Saeed was detained in the light of the United Nations
...an organization which on balance has done more bad than good, with the good not done well and the bad done thoroughly...
’ resolution of 2008. However,
corruption finds a dozen alibis for its evil deeds...
he said, the resolution of the UN Security Council passed in 1948 for holding a plebiscite in India-held Kashmire had not been implemented so far.

The lawyer stated that the JuD chief were tossed into the calaboose for keeping the Kashmire issue alive and the move was liable to be declared void as there was no nexus with anti-terrorism laws, which had been manoeuvered by the government to curtail the liberty of a Pak citizen at the behest of a foreign mission.

He asked the court to get the JuD chief recovered from the illegal and improper detention and set him at liberty in the interest of justice.

The government had placed Hafiz Saeed and four other members of his organization under house arrest last week for a period of three months.

Florida man jailed for 30 years for mosque fire
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] A Florida man pleaded no contest and was sentenced on Monday to 30 years in prison for setting fire last year to the mosque where Orlando nightclub shooter Omar Mateen
... the Afghan-"American" who decided he was a soldier of the Caliphate and shot fifty unarmed people to death in a Florida gay bar he used to frequent...
once worshipped, court officials said.

Joseph Schreiber, 32, caused more than $100,000 in damage to the Islamic Center of Fort Pierce, which he set ablaze on Sept. 11, 2016, the 15th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks, authorities said.

The crime also coincided with the Moslem holy day of Eid al-Adha, or the Feast of Sacrifice.

No one was hurt, but the fire forced the congregation to relocate prayer services as it seeks a new home.

Schreiber told police after his arrest in September that his attack on the mosque had nothing to do with Mateen, Assistant State Attorney Steve Gosnell said in an interview on Monday.

A lawyer for Schreiber could not be immediately reached after Monday’s court hearing in St. Lucie County.

The mosque was close to the apartment Mateen shared with his wife before he killed 49 people and maimed dozens more at a gay nightclub in Orlando last June, the deadliest mass shooting in modern US history.

Syrian judge says second marriage will reduce spinsterhood
[EN.ZAMANALWSL.NET] A statement issued by the first lawful judge in Damascus encouraging second marriage to lessen the war losses and to reduce spinsterhood has sparked anger amid regime supporters on Tuesday.

Judge Mahmoud Marawi told state-run Tishreen Newspaper that second marriage is one of the proposed solutions to spinsterhood phenomenon and that war led to increase in female numbers rating 65% in relation to males.

Marawi talked about Syrian personal status and Sharia system facilitating second marriage and now, the judge is not required to check economic means to run two households.

Pro-regime activists who condemned the judge statement, said the support should be for the first family to overcome difficult living conditions before any talk about two families."

The activists have also demanded the wealthy endowment ministry and traders to support Syrian families instead of such calls.

Some men who liked the proposition of second marriage launched a campaign called "Together in support of the legislative judge". On the other hand, some women reacted with complaints and called for supporting families who lost their sons instead of proposing meaningless ideas.

Marawi confirmed that the proposition will be well-received by people, but he saw that second and third marriage will be facilitated by judiciary since it is the best solution to the spinsterhood.

A woman responded to the judge saying, "you can go marry Mr.judge". The responses come after the spread of undeclared marriage and brothels in some provinces especially the ones controlled by regime militias and what is left of regime army under threat and accusation of treason. In some cases, women accepted emergency marriages fearing rape which was committed by these forces against women and populations.

It is noted that it is not the first time that Marawi’s statement spark controversy especially in relation to the women whose husbands were killed and some statements regarding adultery and civil marriage.

Egyptian Louvre attack suspect 'acted alone'
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] A 29-year-old Egyptian tossed in the calaboose
You have the right to remain silent...
after a machete attack at the Louvre in Gay Paree last week has said he acted on his own and was not under orders from ISIS, a source close to the probe said Wednesday.

Police have confirmed him as Abdallah El-Hamahmy, a sales manager resident in Dubai, who has denied being guided by the murderous Moslem group during interrogations.

He said that he "acted on his own will" and planned only to damage artworks as a symbolic assault on La Belle France, the source said, asking not to be named.

Although his backpack contained spray paint which could have been used to deface artwork, Sherlocks believe he appears to have "a certain sympathy for the ideas of IS," the source said, referring to ISIS using a different acronym.

In Friday’s attack at the world’s busiest museum, Hamahmy was shot after lunging at four soldiers with machetes in the underground ticketing area while shouting "Allahu Akbar" (God is Greatest).

Hamahmy, who is recovering in hospital, is likely be charged once medical staff say he is well enough to appear before a judge.

The son of a retired policeman entered La Belle France legally on January 26 on a flight from Dubai and was staying in an apartment rented by the week in an expensive Gay Paree district near the Champs-Elysees, sources say.

Investigators are examining a Twitter account thought to his which sent out a dozen messages in Arabic between 9:27 am and 9:34 am, just minutes before the attack.

"In the name of Allah... for our brothers in Syria and fighters across the world," one said.

Another post asked: "Why are they afraid of the creation of a state for Islam? Because the state of Islam defends its resources and the honor of Moslems."

Hamahmy’s father Reda El-Hamahmy, a retired police officer, had previously given media interviews ‐ including with Al Arabiya ‐ saying his son was innocent.

But speaking in Cairo he told AFP that his son had shown no sign of having been radicalized.

He said the family was relatively well off, with Abdallah earning a law degree in the Nile delta city of Mansoura in 2010 before moving to Dubai to become a sales manager.

The father said the suspect’s wife was pregnant with the couple’s second child and was currently in Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
The Louvre assault revived fears of violence in La Belle France, which suffered a string of attacks that killed 238 people between January 2015 and July 2016.

"The enemy is completely surrounded in West djinn-infested Mosul
... the home of a particularly ferocious and hairy djinn...
, and those who do not surrender to the Iraqi security forces will be killed there," Air Force Col. John Dorrian said in a news briefing from Baghdad.

As Iraqi security forces prepare to liberate West Mosul, coalition strikes are pounding ISIS targets, including bully boyz and their weapons caches and ISIS command-and-control sites, Dorrian said.

With eastern Mosul liberated, the 16th Iraqi Army Division is serving as a "hold force" there to maintain pressure on any remaining ISIS sleeper cells and prevent the bully boyz from infiltrating the city again, the colonel explained. Terrorists are targeting eastern Mosul with indirect fire, mortars and artillery fires, Dorrian said, causing damage and civilian casualties. They are also using commercially available drones to observe and drop explosives on Iraqi security force and civilian positions, he added.

"Although dangerous and effective as a propaganda tactic, this has limited operational effect on the battlefield and will not change the outcome or significantly delay the inevitable," he said.

ISIS executes 17 in Mosul

Nineveh (IraqiNews.com) Islamic State militants have burned a number of civilians to death for collaborating with security forces, while executing members for escaping the city, a military source said Wednesday.

DPA quoted Col. Khaled al-Jawari as saying that the group burned 20 civilians to death over charges of providing information about the group to security forces via cell phones. The execution was carried out before a watching crowd in Wadi Hajar, south of Mosul, according to the military officer.

Meanwhile, the agency also quoted locals in Mosul’s western region as saying that Islamic State executed seven of its fighters after they attempted to flee one of its secret camps in the region.

Since it occupied large areas of Iraq in 2014, Islamic State has posted videos of heinous executions of civilians, security personnel, and foreign workers over multiple charges. Some of the executions were even carried out by little children.

Since encounters with Iraqi security forces began in mid October, there have been several reports about the group executing members for fleeing battlefields and civilians for collaboration with police and army troops.

Iraqi government forces recaptured eastern Mosul on January 24th after three months of battles, and are preparing to invade the western region to consummate the liberation of Mosul which fell in IS grip in 2014.

ISIS distributes expired children's meds

Nineveh (IraqiNews.com) Islamic State militants in western Mosul have begun to give out children medicines to paint a picture of a stable life, but local sources say the drugs turned out to be expired.

A local source told Alsumaria news said IS-run clinics have begun to distribute children medicines as part of a media campaign run by the extremist group to give an impression of stability while the group braces for a major offensive by government forces.

But the group is actually handing out the medicines “though knowing they are expired,” according to the source.

Islamic State is still in control over most of western Mosul, where 750.000 civilians have been trapped under the extremist group’s bloody reign for more than two years.

Mid October, Iraqi government forces, backed by international coalition troops led by the United States, launched a major offensive to retake Mosul, IS’s largest base in Iraq. Operations since then have managed to retake the eastern section of the city, and the government says it is close to giving a green light to its troops to invade the west.

The U.S. Department of Defense said Tuesday the group has become effectively stuck in western Mosul, with no choice other than fighting to death.

Fighting spreads to other Tripoli districts
[LibyaHerald] This afternoon clashes erupted in Abu Sleem and Salahedeen districts in Tripoli between the Abu Sleem Central Security Force belonging to Abdul Ghani Al-Kikli (a.k.a. Ghneiwa) and gunmen loyal to Salah Al-Burki, most of them from Misrata. Reports tonight indicate tanks and heavy mortar are being used. There was shooting in Ain Zara and Tajoura.

Residents in Abu Sleem are staying at home and the streets are empty.

“The shooting hasn’t stopped since the early afternoon. We don’t dare go out to see what’s happening,” a local resident told the Libya Herald.

He added he had heard the Burki unit had destroyed a Ghneiwa position in retaliation for a similar action by it.

Both the Ghneiwa and Burki militias have fought each other in the past. The former are linked to the Presidency Council. Those of Birki support Khalifa Ghwell, the former “prime minister” of the so-called national salvation government.

The reason for the clashes are not immediately clear, although on its Facebook page belonging to the Ghneiwa forces it said it was dealing with an armed gang that had stolen nine cars in the area.

The militia also posted a couple of days ago the apparent confessions of two men accused of kidnapping and robbery and said to belong to the “Libyan National Guards”.

The latter unit also supports Khalifa Ghwell.

It has been using the Rixos complex and the forest surrounding as its headquarters. Eyewitnesses report the increasing spread of checkpoints the Rixos area. As part of a military building in the area, the Misratan Marsa brigade announced today the arrival of 300 armoured vehicles to Tripoli, belonging to LNG.

Meanwhile, Ghwell chaired a meeting this morning at the General Electricity Company of Libya (GECOL) to follow up on the general power cuts that have crippled Libya in the past month. It was reported foreign representatives attended.

In contrast, calm returned to Janzour as schools reopened following a two-day hiatus. Representatives from the ministry of education visited two of them today to check on their situation and inspect examination procedures.

Intense fighting erupted six days ago in the area and continued despite a ceasefire being agreed between Janzour militias and the neighbouring Wirshefana, mediated by local elders.

However, further complicating the situation, social media images today appeared to show Ghwell greeting fighters at Bridge 17 in Janzour, where the fighting initially erupted. It is also claimed he visited the checkpoint at Camp 27, further west. It is in Wirshefana territory.

Hezbully militia kill 20 ISIS Bad Guys in al-Hajaf

Nineveh/ Salahuddin (IraqiNews.com) Al-Hashd al-Shaabi (Popular Mobilization Units) said Wednesday they killed 20 Islamic State militants in western Mosul, while two of its fighters were killed hours earlier in an attack by the extremist group in Salahuddin.

The force’s media service said in a statement it killed 20 Islamic State militants, including four wearing explosive belts, after a failed attack by the militants on al-Hajaf, in the town of Tal Abta, west of Mosul. It said three vehicles used by IS were destroyed in the encounters.

Al-Hashd launched recently a new phase of operations against IS around the group’s strategic stronghold town of Tal Afar.

Also on Wednesday, DPA reported that two PMU fighters were killed and five others were wounded in attacks by IS late Tuesday at al-Dour, Salahuddin province. It quoted a security source saying that combat reinforcements forced the militants back to their launching point at Mutaibija region, 30 km east of Samarra, after fierce battles.

The source said the attack at al-Dour began with an explosion of a booby-trapped car driven by an IS suicide bomber before a mortar shell landed on a residential compound in the area. The situation prompted a brief curfew at al-Dour, said the source.

Al-Hashd al-Shaabi, an alliance of dozens of Shia militias, which won government recognition as a national force, has been actively fighting Islamic State since its formation in 2014. It made remarkable victories in western Mosul late 2016 when it recaptured major Islamic State bastions near Tal Afar.

Late January, PMUs launched an operation to clear roads linking Mosul with Salahuddin and Baghdad.

Since its inception, al-Hashd grappled with accusations by international human rights groups and Sunni powers of committing abuses against Sunni civilians. The Iraqi government has eagerly defended the force against the claims.

Suicide bomber dies in al-Daur District

Salahuddin (IraqiNews.com) A security source in Salahuddin revealed that army forces killed a suicide bomber, after trying to attack the headquarters of the army’s 9th brigade, north of the province, Alsumaria News reported on Wednesday.

The source said, “A member of the Islamic State group, wearing a suicide vest, was trying to storm into the headquarters of the army’s 9th brigade in al-Daur District, north of Salahuddin Province.”

“The army forces shot the suicide bomber before reaching the headquarters, killing him and detonating the explosive vest,” the source added on condition of anonymity.

“The attack did not result in any casualties among the army ranks,” the source further explained.

Former prime minister Farmajo wins Somalia’s presidential vote
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Mohammed Abdullahi Farmajo, a US-educated former prime minister, was sworn in as Somalia’s new president on Wednesday after politicians gave him an unassailable lead in the second round of an election in Mogadishu’s secure airport compound.

Celebratory gunfire erupted across the city at his victory. Outgoing President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud conceded defeat as it became clear he could not win a third round.

"This is a victory for Somalia and the Somalis," Farmajo told politicians who had gathered in a hall behind the airport’s blast walls to vote. He was sworn in moments earlier.
Ynet adds that not only was the new president educated in America, but he holds dual Somali and American citizenships.

Rockets fired from Sinai at Eilat, errant Syrian mortar lands in north
[Ynet] Iron Dome intercepts 3 rockets from the Egyptian peninsula, 1 falls in open area; IDF retaliates for mortar fire in north by attacking Syrian military post in Quneitra.

Four rockets were fired at the southern city of Eilat on Wednesday night from the Sinai Peninsula, with three intercepted by the Iron Dome missile-defense system and fourth falling in an open area. Earlier in the evening, an errant mortar shell from Syria fell inside Israel, with the IDF attacking a Syrian army post in retaliation.

At 10:54pm, a Code Red rocket alert was sounded in the city, followed by a second siren a minute later.

Israel's air defense system, the Iron Dome, successfully intercepted three of the rockets that were fired from the Egyptian territory, where ISIS-affiliated terrorist fight against the regime. The fourth rocket landed in an open area, causing no damage.

Fragments from the intercepted rockets were discovered in a swimming pool in the city.

The last time rockets were fired at Eilat was during Operation Protective Edge, in July 2014. At the time, two rockets managed to strike at the center of the city, one of them near a hotel.

Syrian war spillover in north
Earlier in the evening, a mortar shell fired from a tank in Syria went kaboom! in open territory in the Golan Heights along Israel's northern border. The IDF attacked a Syrian army post in retaliation.

The IDF believes the shell was not intentionally fired at Israel, but was rather spillover from the fighting near the border between the Syrian army and rebels trying to topple Syrian Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
Lord of the Baath...
A Syrian official told Lebanese TV network Al Mayadeen that "the Israeli attack was done using a helicopter that launched a missile from Israeli territory towards structures in Madinat al-Baath in Quneitra."

He said the army post that was targeted was facing posts of the al-Qaeda affiliated terror group Jabhat al-Nusra
...formally Jabhat an-Nusrah li-Ahli al-Sham (Support Front for the People of the Levant), also known as al-Qaeda in the Levant. They aim to establish a pan-Arab caliphate. Not the same one as the Islamic State, though .. ...

Pakistan extradites convicted killer on UK request
[GEO.TV] A taxi driver who has been incarcerated
Drop the rosco, Muggsy, or you're one with the ages!
for a minimum of 32 years for murdering two men in Bradford is the first person to have been extradited from Pakistain in more than a decade, prosecutors have said.

Mohammed Zubair, 36, was given a life sentence at Bradford Crown Court on Wednesday for the murders of Ahmedin Khyel and Imran Khan in May 2011.

A jury heard how Zubair lured Mr Khyel, 35, and his friend Mr Khan, 27, to his family home in Heath Terrace, Bradford, after discovering Mr Khyel had been having an affair with his wife.

There they were set upon by Zubair, his friend Sabir Hussain, and possibly one other person, leaving the two men with fatal head injuries.

Zubair then drove his taxi to a quiet and secluded country lane near the village of Tong, where he "dumped" the bodies, the jury was told.

He then fled to Pakistain but, after a long legal battle, he was finally returned to the UK in May 2015 to face trial.

The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) said it was the first extradition to the UK from Pakistain since 2005.

Prosecutors said the "ferocious" and "brutal" attack on the two men happened after Zubair found that his wife, Kainaat Bibi, had been having an affair with Afghan electrician Mr Khyel, who lived in the East Ham area of London with his wife and seven children.

The court heard that Mrs Bibi visited Mr Khyel in London during a temporary separation from her husband, and he would visit her in Bradford at their family home while Zubair was out.

Both men suffered fractures to their skulls that drove bone fragments into their brains and resulted in parts of the brain being pushed out of their skulls, the court heard.

Prosecutors said Mr Khyel suffered at least six blows to the head, some after he had been knocked out, and his friend tried to defend himself "while the blows were raining down on him".

The jury was told that a "distinctive" pattern on some of the injuries was similar to that found on a dumb bell bar recovered from Zubair's home.

Detective Superintendent Simon Atkinson, said: "I would firstly like to thank the Pak authorities, who have played a crucial role in this investigation by arresting Zubair and ensuring his extradition back to the UK to face justice.

"His victims were brutally murdered and I hope their families will finally have some comfort knowing that their killer is now facing a life sentence.

"Zubair fled the country shortly after he had killed his victims in the belief that he would also escape justice for these horrendous crimes.

"I hope this case sends out a message that West Yorkshire Police will use all available methods to bring dangerous men like Zubair to justice, wherever in the world they might be."

In 2012, Sabir Hussain was found guilty of manslaughter and Zubair's mother, Arab Sultana, pleaded guilty to perverting the course of justice.

She had booked and paid for the flights to Pakistain for her son, knowing that he was wanted by the police, the CPS said.

Zubair's then wife, Mrs Bibi, admitted lying to the police and making a false witness statement.

All three were sentenced at Bradford Crown Court in 2012.

JUI-F accuses centre of targeting madressahs
[DAWN] PESHAWAR: Jamaat Ulema-e-Islam
...Assembly of Islamic Clergy, or JUI, is a Pak Deobandi (Hanafi) political party. There are two main branches, one led by Maulana Fazlur Rahman, and one led by Maulana Samiul Haq. Fazl is active in Pak politix and Sami spends more time running his madrassah. Both branches sponsor branches of the Taliban, though with plausible deniability...
-Fazl general secretary Maulana Abdul Ghafoor Haideri
...Central Secretary General of JUI-F, member of the Pak senate, formerly provincial minister of Balochistan. He has a master's degree in Islam and runs a madrassah...
has said that the federal government is targeting religious seminaries under the garb of National Action Plan (NAP).

Talking to media persons at the Beautiful Downtown Peshawar
...capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (formerly known as the North-West Frontier Province), administrative and economic hub for the Federally Administered Tribal Areas of Pakistan. Peshawar is situated near the eastern end of the Khyber Pass, convenient to the Pak-Afghan border. Peshawar has evolved into one of Pakistan's most ethnically and linguistically diverse cities, which means lots of gunfire.
Press Club on Tuesday, he warned that no one would be allowed to use NAP as a tool against the religious institutions in the country. He claimed that NAP was not being implemented in its true sense rather it was misused.

Maulana Haideri, who is also deputy chairman of the Senate, said that his party had also supported NAP and establishment of military courts in the larger national interest, but they could not remain silent if anything was done wrong. He alleged that NAP was used as a tool against madressahs and for the arrest of religious scholars under the fourth schedule.

The religious seminaries, he said, were the places of Islamic teaching which had nothing to do with terrorism. He said that such policies would create unrest in the country and its entire responsibility would rest with the government.

Britain
Suspect held from PIA flight in London identified as terror convict Khalid Baqa
[GEO.TV] LONDON/KARACHI: The man who was nabbed
Drop the rod and step away witcher hands up!
from PIA flight PK757, after it was diverted to Stansted Airport in London on Tuesday over security concerns, has been identified as Khalid Baqa, Geo News has learnt.

A Pakistain International Airlines (PIA) plane flying to Heathrow airport was forced to land at London's Stansted Airport on Tuesday evening over security threats. Reports surfaced that a suspect was taken into custody by the British authorities and shifted to a cop shoppe.

Stansted airport front man had said: "The aircraft is likely to continue its journey onwards to Heathrow today pending inquiries that the police are making into the individual on the aircraft."

The UK Ministry of Defence said that Typhoon jets had intercepted the aircraft, which had been en route to London´s Heathrow Airport, and escorted it to Stansted.

However,
there's no worse danger than telling a mother her baby is ugly...
the identity of the suspect has now been confirmed as Khalid Baqa, who was apprehended along with his accomplices in 2012 on charges of terrorism.

In 2013, Baqa was sentenced to two years in prison in the UK. He was charged with having over 300 CDs in his possession, which had holy warrior material.

The CDs seized from him had sermons of Anwar al-Awlaki
... Born in Las Cruces, New Mexico, zapped in Yemen, al-Awlaki was a dual citizen of the U.S. and Yemen. He was an Islamic holy man who was a trainer for al-Qaeda and its franchises. His sermons were attended by three of the 9/11 hijackers, by Fort Hood murderer Nidal Malik Hussein, and Undieboomer Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab. He was the first U.S. citizen ever placed on a CIA target list...
and beheading scenes. Apart from that, the disks had bomb-making procedures, will of one of the convicts of London blasts and his confessional statement. The CDs also had recorded scenes of the 9/11 attacks.

British police said the plane was diverted over a bomb threat.

The PIA, however, said the response by British authorities was excessive.
Bright Pebbles submitted an article from the Standard on the same story, which it reported very differently:
Man charged after Pakistan flight escorted to Stansted Airport by Typhoon jets

A man from London who was arrested after a passenger flight was escorted by RAF fighter jets to Stansted Airport has been charged with fraud.

The Ministry of Defence deployed two Typhoon fighter jets to intercept the Pakistan International Airlines flight on Tuesday afternoon after an anonymous phone call sparked a major security alert.

The plane was making its way from Lahore to Heathrow.

Police said Khalid Baqa, of Priory Road, Barking, was due to be arrested on arrival at Heathrow but was instead detained at Stansted.

The 52-year-old, a UK national, has been charged with committing fraud by false representation and has been bailed to appear at Highbury Corner Magistrates' Court on February 23.

It is not believed he had any involvement in the cause of the diversion.

The plane was accompanied by Typhoons to the Essex airport, with photos posted on Twitter showing several fire engines and a number of ambulances waiting on the ground.

An airline spokesman said UK authorities had "received some vague security threat through an anonymous phone call".

Passenger Naz Amin said the flight landed "in the middle of nowhere" and was quickly surrounded by police.

He told LBC Radio: "I realised it was surrounded by police and the police came on the plane about 45 minutes to an hour later and they took a gentleman off the plane.

"He wasn't being disruptive at all, he was just sitting down... there was no-one being disruptive on the plane."

Essex Police said the incident is "not believed to be a hijack situation or terror matter".

Stansted is a designated airport for dealing with hijacks and major security alerts. Incidents are dealt with in a remote part of the airfield to the north west of the terminal building.

ICRC suspends work in Afghanistan after 6 staff killed

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) is putting its aid activities across Afghanistan "on hold" following the killing of six Afghan staff, a senior ICRC official said on Wednesday.

Islamic State gunmen were suspected of killing at least six Afghan employees of the ICRC on Wednesday as they carried supplies to areas in the north of the country hit by deadly snow storms, government officials said.

Dominik Stillhart, ICRC director of operations worldwide, told Reuters Television in Geneva: "As we speak our operations are on hold indeed, because we need to understand what exactly happened before we can hopefully resume our operations."

Iraq
Mosul Offensive News
26 ISIS Bad Guys die in northern Mosul

Nineveh (IraqiNews.com) Iraqi army generals and media services said Wednesday forces killed 26 Islamic State militants in separate locations in Mosul, while bringing down drones guided by the extremist group.

Col. Adel al-Jubouri, from the Iraqi Joint Operations Command, told Bas News that security forces shot down three Islamic State-guided drones that were heading to bomb civilians in the districts of al-Zohour, al-Masaref, al-Seddiq and al-Sukkar north of Mosul. Government forces had recaptured those districts from IS as part of operations between mid October and January 24th that drove extremists out of eastern Mosul.

In a separate encounter, Jubouri said, troops killed five Islamic State militants who attempted to sneak into Rashidya neighborhood, north of Mosul.

Meanwhile, the Defense Ministry’s War Media Cell said 21 other militants were killed in an army airstrike in Umm al-Zanabir, south of western Mosul’s strategic city of Tal Afar. Three 4WD vehicles belonging to the group were also destroyed in the strike, according to the media service.

Iraqi forces are awaiting top commanders orders to invade Islamic State strongholds in western Mosul.

The United Nations, American and Iraqi military officials have recently reiterated that Islamic State’s days in Iraq were numbered, given the group’s continuous finance and personnel losses over the past months.

16 ISIS Turbans die fighting in al- Darkazlia area

Nineveh (IraqiNews.com) A Counter-Terrorism Officer announced on Wednesday, that violent clashes erupted between security forces and the Islamic State’s militants, during a raid in eastern Mosul.

Colonel Khodier Saleh said in a press statement, “Violent clashes erupted between the Islamic State’s militants and security forces that carried out an extensive search operation in al- Darkazlia area, in eastern the city of Mosul.”

“The clashes resulted in the killing of 16 members of the Islamic State, mostly from foreign nationalities, as well as arresting 17 others, including two suicide bombers,” Saleh added.

4 ISIS Turbans eat Iraqi steel at river crossing

Nineveh (IraqiNews.com) Four Islamic State militants were killed on Wednesday when military jets bombed a small boat they were boarding off the western bank of Tigris River in Mosul, Alsumaria News quoted a local source as saying.

Over the past two weeks, Islamic State militants have reportedly made several attempts to cross the river, which bisects the city, to wage attacks against security troops which became in full control over the eastern side since January 24th. Security officials have said they foiled those attacks and killed several militants. The group had lost more than 3000 of its fighters since security operations to retake Mosul launched in October.

The Iraqi government has yet to give directives to the security leaderships to carry on with a ground invasion of Islamic State strongholds in the west. Iraqi and U.S. generals predict more difficult battles there due to the existence of 750.000 civilians in mostly narrow residential areas. Iraqi and international coalition jets have recently bombed militants locations in western Mosul preparing for the next phase of operations.

The conflict in Mosul has forced at least 191.000 civilians to seek shelter at refugee camps, and the United Nations had predicted turmoil to force at least one million people out of home.

20 die in ISIS drone attacks in eastern Mosul

Nineveh (IraqiNews.com) On Wednesday a security source in Nineveh Province declared that a person was killed, while 19 others were wounded by a drone attack carried out by the Islamic State on the liberated areas in the city of Mosul.

The source said, “The Islamic State group’s drones dropped bombs on Jazair neighborhood, east of Mosul, killing a civilian and wounded six others, including five volunteers.”

“The Islamic State also bombed al-Arabi neighborhood and Sayediti al-Jamila area in Mosul, wounding 13 persons, including six members of al-Hashd al-Shaabi.”

In January 25th 2017, Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi announced liberating the eastern side of Mosul from the Islamic State completely.

targeting the Supreme Court of Afghanistan.

The loyalists of the terror group operating under the name of Khurasan province, issued a statement earlier this evening, claiming the attack was carried out by the group.

The statement was released in Arabic language along with a picture purportedly showing the jacket wallah who detonated his explosives near the court entrance gate.

According to the Afghan public health officials, at least 21 people were killed and 41 others were maimed in the attack.

The attack was widely condemned in Afghanistan as well as abroad.

"This attack appears to have deliberately targeted civilian judicial staff as they were leaving the office for the day," said Tadamichi Yamamoto, the Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Afghanistan and head of UNAMA. "This attack is nothing short of an atrocity. Those responsible for planning and carrying out this horrendous act must be brought to justice."

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Turkish army, Syrian rebels escalate assault on al-Bab
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Syrian rebel forces supported by Turkish armed forces have seized control of strategically important hills around the ISIS-controlled town of al-Bab, The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
’s military said on Wednesday.

It said in a statement that 58 ISIS snuffies were killed in air strikes, artillery fire and festivities. Two Turkish soldiers had been killed and 15 slightly maimed.

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said the operations had made important progress and the next target would be the Syrian city of Raqqa, the de facto capital of ISIS.

The battle for al-Bab has raised the prospect of confrontation between the Turkish military and the Syrian army, which has pushed to within a few kilometres of the city’s southern outskirts.

A Syrian rebel official and a monitoring organization said the advancing forces had captured the western outskirts of al-Bab, some 30 km (20 miles) south of the Turkish border.

"With last night’s assault, ISIS’s defences have been broken through and the advance is now continuing," said the official, speaking from the Turkish city of Gaziantep. Turkish military reinforcements had been sent to the area about a week
ago, the rebel added.

Al-Bab has been a major target of a Turkish offensive launched in northern Syria last August to drive ISIS away from the border and prevent further gains by US-backed Kurdish militia that are also fighting the holy warriorgroup.

Syrian government forces and allied militia have mounted their own rapid advance towards al-Bab in the last few weeks. The city was encircled earlier this week when Syrian government forces cut the last way into the city. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a UK-based organization that reports on the war, said the Turkish forces and their Free Syrian Army
... the more palatable version of the Syrian insurgency, heavily influenced by the Moslem Brüderbund...
rebel allies had captured a hill on the western periphery of the city.

"We don’t know if ISIS (ISIS) will be able to recover it, or if it is in a state of collapse," Observatory Director Rami Abdulrahman said.

In a video sent by the rebel official, three Syrian rebel fighters with the Sultan Murad faction said they were speaking from inside al-Bab. It was not possible to confirm the authenticity of the footage.

"I am in Bab now but not at the centre. We are on the outskirts. Thank God, we have reached this place," said one of the rebels. Blasts were heard in the background.

The Observatory said at least six people had been killed and 12 more maimed in the latest shelling of al-Bab.

Turkish presidency sources said on Wednesday President Tayyip Erdogan and US President Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
agreed in a phone call overnight to act jointly against ISIS in al-Bab and Raqqa, another Syrian city held by ISIS.

The White House said in a statement that Trump spoke about the two countries’ "shared commitment to combating terrorism in all its forms" and welcomed Turkey’s contributions to the fight against ISIS, but it gave no further details.

Britain
Theresa May slams 'absolutely appalling' Phil Shiner and promises to crack down on Ihat lawyers
[Daily Mail, Where America Gets Its News] Theresa May slammed the disgraced lawyer Phil Shiner for hounding Iraq veterans today and promised to crack down on others who chase after former soldiers.

She said it was 'absolutely appalling' that the likes of Mr Shiner, who was struck off last week, could 'make a business out of chasing after our brave troops'.

And the PM promised to reduce the number of cases being pursued by the Iraq Historic Allegations Team (Ihat), which has been heavily criticised for leading a 'witch-hunt' and is estimated to have cost £36.3million to date.

It was set up in 2010 to probe claims of abuse of civilians following the 2003 invasion.

Professor Shiner made his name suing the Government at taxpayers' expense but last week a disciplinary tribunal found he acted dishonestly in bringing murder claims against British troops.

Today the PM was pressed by Tory MP Johnny Mercer, who is leading a parliamentary inquiry into Ihat, to 'get a grip' on the process, which led to many more claims than the Government expected, 'so that never again will our servicemen and women be exposed to the likes of Phil Shiner'.

Mrs May responded: 'In relation to Ihat, we are committed to reducing its case load to a small number of credible cases as quickly as possible.

’I recognise that the action that has been taken in relation to the individual that he has referred to.

I think it is absolutely appalling when people try to make a business out of chasing after our brave troops.'

Earlier this week MailOnline revealed that the disgraced lawyer was part of a group of conspiracy theorists that plotted legal action even before the Iraq War started.

Professor Shiner, 60, was a member of the ’Legal Inquiry Steering Group (LISG)’, which was set up in August 2002 to plan court cases and threaten the Government. British troops went into action in March 2003.

A damning report by MPs into Ihat set to be published next week is expected to call for the £60million probe to be scrapped immediately.

Mr Mercer said he believed a 'rotten core' of civil servants had warped the purpose of the process.

The report is set to blame the Ministry of Defence for creating a system that allowed Professor Shiner to bring criminal cases against former soldiers on an 'industrial scale'.

The MoD has said it is obliged to investigate criminal allegations and the existence of Ihat keeps British soldiers from being hauled through international courts.

The Defence Sub-Committee's report on the support given to former and serving personnel who face legal proceedings is due to be published on February 15.

Since its launch there have been 3,392 cases lodged with Ihat, two thirds of which were brought by Shiner and his firm, Public Interest Lawyers (PIL).

The allegations against British military personnel have ranged from low-level mistreatment of civilians to claims of torture and murder.

Mr Shiner was finally struck off last week after a string of misconduct charges against him, including five of dishonesty, were found proven following a Solicitors Disciplinary Tribunal hearing.

There have been calls for the lawyer to face criminal prosecution and the National Crime Agency is said to be reviewing evidence from the Legal Aid Authority.
