Pennsylvania Inmate Loses Appeal After Trying to Argue Drugs in His Buttocks Were Not His
[Breitbart] A Pennsylvania inmate who tried to convince the court that the drugs in his rear end did not belong to him lost his appeal last week.

The Pennsylvania judicial panel remained unphased when they ruled that the bag of drugs in Edwin Wylie-Biggs’ buttocks were his, upholding a court ruling that sentenced him to three to six additional years behind bars for the incident, the New York Daily News reported.

Wylie-Biggs argued that the state did not have enough evidence to convict him of smuggling contraband in prison.

A corrections officer testified that he ordered Wylie-Biggs to bend over for a strip search after witnessing another inmate pass him an unknown object.

When the inmate bent over to be searched for contraband, the corrections officer found "a clear plastic bag containing a small blue balloon could be seen sticking out of his rectum," according to the court document.

Once Wylie-Biggs took the bag out of his anus, the officers tested the substance. Lab tests showed that the substance tested positive for K2, a form of synthetic marijuana.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Make Iran Great Again
[WSJ] Iran erupted last Thursday. By Friday, the protests against the government, which began in Mashhad near the Afghan border, had spread to dozens of cities. So when we traveled on Saturday to a movie theater on Manhattan’s Lower East Side to see "Darkest Hour," Gary Oldman’s portrayal of Winston Churchill, imagine the jarring dislocation when the theater’s previews included a trailer for an admiring documentary of Barack Obama’s foreign-policy making, "The Final Year."

The preview screen filled with expressions of earnest intent from Mr. Obama, Susan Rice, Samantha Power, Ben Rhodes and the Iran nuclear deal’s handmaiden, John Kerry. About 100 minutes later, we were watching Churchill shout at his war cabinet that you cannot do deals with dictators. That would have been about the time this weekend that protesters in Iran were shouting "Death to Khamenei !" It’s nice to see the Iranian people have a sense of humor.

Producing the past week’s protests against the Iranian regime was not the goal of the six-party Iran nuclear deal. Back then, the Khamenei-Rouhani regime was represented as America’s partner in a good cause. Now the governments of the U.S., U.K., France and Germany (Russia is a Khamenei ally, and China only supports crackdowns) have to decide whether their Iranian partner is the people in the streets or the government that is shooting them.

In the preview of "The Final Year," the Obama team members convey confidence in the rightness of everything they did. But as we learned in November 2016, there was one big thing the Obama people never understood: how a real economy works. By real economy, I mean the private economy, not the economy of public spending.

A central element of the nuclear deal was that it would "help" the Iranian people by lifting sanctions and injecting $100 billion of unfrozen assets into Iran’s economy. This was much the same economic theory behind the Obama administration’s 2009 injection of $832 billion into the U.S. economy. Both flopped because both made the real economy essentially a bystander to state guidance.

The Obama $832 billion went up the government’s fireplace flue. The Iranian $100 billion went into ballistic missile production and for Iran’s proxies in Syria, Yemen, Lebanon and the Gaza Strip.

The moment has arrived for invidious comparisons.

Donald Trump is president because the Obama-Clinton Democrats forgot about hard-pressed voters in Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Michigan. The Khamenei-Rouhani regime is under assault because working-class Iranians began this week’s revolt in cities beyond the capital.

Come to think of it, isn’t that disconnect between the people running governments and the people trying to make a living in the real economy the core reason behind the world-wide burst of populism?

It’s the reason France’s working-class voters and young, underemployed college graduates sent Emmanuel Macron and a heretofore nonexistent party into the French presidency. It’s the reason working-class Brits lunged for Brexit. This new global reality‐perform or get shoved aside‐is the reason Saudi Arabia’s Prince Mohammed bin Salman imposed reforms.

The Iranians shouting, "Leave Syria, think of us!" are the West Virginia coal miners shouting, "Make America Great Again." That’s not yahooism. It is anxiety directed at incumbent elites who tell the public that reduced levels of economic growth are the new normal. The world’s populations will not accept that.

Iran‐like North Korea‐has taken its best and brightest and stuck them inside a mountain to build atomic bombs, leaving the economy in the hands of Brussels-grade technocrats.

Besides calling for higher taxes in its recent budget, even as prices have spiked for basic foodstuff, Hassan Rouhani’s government has pursued import-substitution policies by imposing high tariffs on many imported goods. Needless to say, Iranians can’t get the clothing, appliances and electronics they want.

To combat a massive cellphone-smuggling operation, Iran recently slapped a 5% duty on them atop the 9% value-added tax and required registration with Iran’s telecom user database. Now, millions of smuggled phones will make it harder for the ayatollahs to kill texting among protesters. The bazaar may prove stronger than the theocracy.

A theme now emerging in Western media is that if Europe’s leaders support President Trump’s "aggressive" posture toward Tehran, that will undermine both the sanctified Obama nuclear deal and support for "liberals" in the Rouhani government. This is where we came in, watching Winston Churchill convince a timid British establishment that an outward-moving dictatorship won’t stop at anyone’s border.

The moment has arrived to admit that Iran’s missiles, nuclear technology and armies won’t stay inside its borders until the people getting shot in the streets are recognized and supported by a too-timid world.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
The Norm Is NOT Democracy -- the Norm Is Extinction
[PJ] Before we wax too eloquent about the democratic aspirations of the great Iranian people, we should keep in the mind that the most probable scenario for Iran under any likely regime is a sickening spiral into poverty and depopulation. Iran has the fastest-aging population of any country in the world, indeed, the fast-aging population of any country in history. It has the highest rate of venereal disease infection and the highest rate of infertility of any country in the world. It has a youth unemployment rate of 35% (adjusted for warehousing young people in state-run diploma mills). And worst of all, it has run out of water.

We might be observing the birth of Iranian democracy in the protests of the past few weeks, but it is more likely that we are watching the slow-motion train wreck of a once-great nation in all its gory detail. As I noted in an Asia Times analysis this morning, the most violent protests, e.g. the burning of a police station near Isfahan captured on this video, happened in the boondocks where water has run out. The river that runs through Isfahan, a legendary city of gardens in the desert, literally has run dry. Some Iranian officials warn that tens of millions of Iranians will have to leave their homes for lack of water. The country has used up 70% of its groundwater and its literally drying up major rivers to maintain consumption. It's the worst ecological disaster in modern history.

The Islamic Revolution presided over an orgy of corruption, brutality, and mismanagement. Despite the Obama administration's cash infusion and the lifting of sanctions on oil exports, the government is nearly bankrupt. It has allowed several major banks to fail, wiping out the savings of millions of depositors, after the banks lent vast sums to regime cronies for real estate speculation. Forty-five percent of Iranian bank loans are toxic and the cost of cleaning up the bank mess is estimated at half of GDP (to put that in perspective, the U.S. Treasury set aside $700 billion, or 1/20th of U.S. GDP, to bail out the banks in 2008, and needed only a fraction of it. The Iranian banking crisis is a full order of magnitude worse than the U.S. 2008 crisis).

Iran's pension funds, as I report in Asia Times, are bankrupt. The civil service pension fund has only 100 employees paying in for every 120 employees receiving a pension. The government is on the hook for the rest.

Add up the costs of dealing with the water emergency, the bank crisis and the pension crisis, and Iran is close to broke. And that's just the beginning: The average working-age Iranian today comes from a family of seven children, but has fewer than two children. That means that when the older generation retires, there will be fewer than two new entrants into the workforce to pay for the pensions of seven retirees. The demographic crisis hasn't hit yet, and when it does, it will be the financial equivalent of an asteroid hitting Iran.

In other words, Iran's exhaustion of physical as well as human capital may have pushed it past the point of no return.

Iran has plenty of smart people, and two of the best engineering universities in the world, except virtually all the top graduates leave the country. There probably is a theoretical way out of Iran's economic spiral, but no collection of Shi'ite mullahs is going to find it. The most likely outcome is that Iran will undergo economic and social collapse.

That, sadly, is the norm in human history. The democracy first practiced by the Greek city-state is exceptional, and classical Greece is Exhibit A for civilizational self-destruction. Of the nearly 150,000 languages once spoken on this planet, a couple of thousand are left, and 90% of those will fall silent forever during the next century or so. Sometimes the best thing you can do for dying civilizations is, don't be one of them, as I wrote in my 2011 book, How Civilizations Die.

This makes the mullahs all the more dangerous, like a bank robber with a brain tumor who takes hostages. I sincerely wish a happy outcome for the people of Persia. But we need to be prepared for a very unhappy one.
If only they didn't have nukes, I really wouldn't care.

had dug 100 underground tunnels on the borders between Iraq and Syria, military sources were quoted saying on Wednesday.

Aljournal News website quoted a source from the Iraqi border guards saying that the troops discovered four underground tunnels in December, with some reaching 1.5 kilometer in length and used by the bully boyz to move between the two countries.

"Now, we can confidently say that borders are within the grip of the army, the Popular Mobilization Forces, border guards and tribes, all doing an integrative job," the source said. "Attacks against our forces by Islamic State cells are usually launched from Syria, and are mainly suicide one, but we still have certain issues to decide on, most importantly to put an end to (border) infiltration".

According to the source, "Islamic State bully boyz posses maps of the tunnels they have dug professionally over the past years, and we believe there are one hundred tunnels along the borderline...they should be destroyed whatever it takes".

Another Iraqi army officer, who asked not to be named, said the tunnels "threaten the mission to close the borders", adding that "a single tunnel could pose a threat to Iraqi lives".

If you see a man walking down the street wearing a turban, there is 99.9% chance that he is a Sikh, a follower of a monotheistic religion that started in the 15th century in India. Sikhs proudly wear the turban as part of their religious and cultural heritage. Sikhs are often mistaken for Muslims or Arabs. They are neither. Sikhism is an independent religion and is in no way related to Islam.

Baghdad Bombs & Bullets Bulletin:

Security forces apprehend two terrorists, defuse bombs west of Baghdad

Baghdad (Iraqinews.com) – Security forces arrested on Wednesday two terrorists and dismantled a large amount of explosive charges in different parts of Baghdad, a military command said.

“Two terrorists were apprehended in Abu Gharib area west of Baghdad,” the Baghdad Operations Command said in a statement, a copy of which was obtained by Baghdad Today on Wednesday.

“The troops also seized and defused a large amount of explosive charges at al-Halabsa area in western Baghdad,” the statement read.

The Iraqi capital has seen almost daily bombings and armed attacks against security members, paramilitary troops and civilians since the Iraqi government launched a wide-scale campaign to retake Islamic State-occupied areas in 2016.

Though most of the daily bombings go without a claim of responsibility, Islamic State has declared it had been behind many.

China-Japan-Koreas
Koreans Agree To Talk To Koreans...Nikki Haley Furious!
[Ron Paul Institute] In the last several days, North and South Korea have agreed to hold high-level talks, to re-establish a direct communication link, and to participate in the coming winter Olympic games. Taken together it appears a significant step toward reducing tensions on the peninsula and reducing the risk of catastrophic war. You would think the US would be pleased at the developments and hopeful that diplomacy might take over from saber-rattling. But you would be wrong. US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley has poured cold water on the developments, screeching that North Korea must first give up its nuclear program before talks can even take place. For more, tune in to today's Liberty Report:

Trump Effect: More Companies Offering Workers Bonuses After Passage Of GOP Tax Bill
[Townhall] Well, you can now add Southwest Airlines to the list of companies who are doling out bonuses to workers and increasing philanthropic donations thanks to the new tax bill. Gary Kelly, the chairman and CEO of Southwest, said his company would not waste another minute capitalizing on the most extensive tax reform in 30 years to give their 55,000+ employees a $1,000 bonus, which will be doled out on January 8. Here’s the statement from Mr. Kelly:

FBI Knew The ‘Bleach Bit' Computer Guy Lied In Clinton Email Testimony, Gave Him Immunity
[Hot Air] The Hill published a story today based on leaks from a recent House Judiciary Committee meeting where FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe discussed elements of the Hillary Clinton email investigation. Republicans on the committee say McCabe outlined some irregularities that suggest the outcome of the investigation was rigged in Clinton’s favor. Among the new findings is that an unnamed tech specialist who used Bleach Bit to wipe Clinton’s server after a congressional subpoena was issued admitted lying to the FBI [emphasis added]:

#2  He asked on REDDIT how to do it.

He was called StoneTear
Interesting

Stone Tear Link found here on reddit.

Way back over a year ago, when it first came out that Hillary never had a State Department email address, and conducted all of her business as Secretary of State through her private server, the very first thing that I said was that this proves conclusively that Darrell Issa and the House Committee on Benghazi weren't investigating anything. The Benghazi hearings were faked.

My reasoning was pretty straightforward. It had been well over two years since the supposed investigation started, so it made no sense to come out now that Hillary never had a Secretary of State email address. By all logic, the very first documents subpoenaed pursuant to the Benghazi investigations should have obviously revealed "Hr22@clintonemail,com."

I now know the truth. Darrell Issa and the House Committee took two years to discover that Hillary Clinton never had a State Department email address BECAUSE the documents they were given CONTAINED a State Department email address. Hillary ordered her tech support to strip out her private address from all the records, and replace it with a spoofed State Department address.

On July 23, 2014, the House Select Committee on Benghazi had reached an agreement with the State Department on the production of records, according to an FBI report

The Reddit post evidence that [unnamed reddit user] wanted to remove a "VERY VIP" email address from archived emails? On July 24, 2014.

There is no doubt that the document dump that Hillary gave to the House Committee was forged. StoneTear stripped the "Hr22@clintonemail,com" address from the emails and replaced it with a spoofed State Department address. Two years later, somehow, the House Committee realized they'd been duped, and that's when the story broke that Hillary used a private server during her four years as Secretary of State.

Alcohol can cause irreversible genetic damage to stem cells, says study
[Guardian] Alcohol can cause irreversible genetic damage to the body’s reserve of stem cells, according to a study that helps explain the link between drinking and cancer.

The research, using genetically modified mice, provides the most compelling evidence to date that alcohol causes cancer by scrambling the DNA in cells, eventually leading to deadly mutations.

During the past decade, there has been mounting evidence of the link between drinking and the risk of certain cancers.
"How exactly alcohol causes damage to us is controversial," said Prof Ketan Patel, who led the work at the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Cambridge. "This paper provides very strong evidence that an alcohol metabolite causes DNA damage [including] to the all-important stem cells that go on to make tissues."

The study builds on previous work that had pinpointed a breakdown product of alcohol, called acetaldehyde, as a toxin that can damage the DNA within cells. However, these earlier studies had relied on extremely high concentrations of acetaldehyde and used cells in a dish rather than tracking its effects within the body.

The latest work showed that acetaldehyde slices through DNA, causing permanent damage, if the effects of the toxin are not neutralised by two natural defence mechanisms. The first tier of defence clears away the acetaldehyde and the second repairs the DNA damage.

Keith Ellison Donor: ‘Israelis Have to be Bombed,' Only Understand ‘Resistance'
[Free Beacon] An official at the anti-Israel American Muslims for Palestine group who openly advocates for violence against the Jewish state contributed $2,500 to Democratic Party leader Rep. Keith Ellison (Minn.) last year, according to campaign disclosure documents.

The contribution from Taher Herzallah, AMP's associate director of outreach and grassroots organizing, came in March 2017 shortly after Ellison was named the Democratic National Committee's deputy chairman.

Herzallah is best known as one of the "Irvine 11," a group of students who were sentenced to three years probation for actions taken to disrupt a 2010 speech by then-Israeli ambassador Michael Oren. He more recently‐just a few weeks before his contribution to Ellison‐was arrested for disrupting confirmation hearings for U.S. ambassador to Israel David Friedman.

Herzallah has in recent years openly advocated for using violence to destroy Israel, saying in 2014 that "the State of Israel is a lie" and "Israelis have to be bombed."

"Israelis have to be bombed, they are a threat to the legitimacy of Palestine, and it is wrong to maintain the State of Israel," Herzallah said, according to the Anti-Defamation League. "It is an illegitimate creation born from colonialism and racism."

Herzallah backs up his calls for violence by arguing "the only language that the state of Israel understands is that of resistance."

Grassley Says Comey Appears To Have Leaked Classified Memo To Friend
[Daily Caller] James Comey may have leaked at least one classified memo to a friend shortly after he was fired as FBI director.

That’s an assessment from Senate Judiciary Committee chairman Chuck Grassley, who wrote a letter to Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein on Wednesday demanding answers about the handling of memos that Comey wrote following his conversations with President Trump.

Grassley noted that he and his staff recently reviewed seven memos that Comey wrote after his meetings with Trump. Four of those documents contained information classified as "CONFIDENTIAL" or "SECRET."

Economy
The South Will Rise Again
h/t Instapundit
[Bloomberg] It's hard to find controlled experiments in finance. But they exist. East and West Germany, North and South Korea, Chile and Venezuela. In crossing a border, you can immediately see the difference in economic output and financial well-being from one country to the next, based on variations in tax and regulatory policy.

The same goes for within the U.S. Tax policy drives economic behavior in this country, because people respond to incentives. As taxes in high-tax states have gone higher, there's been a migration out of states like New York, New Jersey and California, and into places like Texas and Florida.

...With the proposed Republican tax reform bill comes a $10,000 limit on state and local tax deductions for individuals. Some of the impact has been offset by lower marginal tax rates, but the net effect makes low-tax states more attractive on a relative basis, which is a bit of an understatement: The difference between living in New Jersey and living in Florida could amount to tens of thousands of dollars for high-income households.

...My prediction: Over time, New York City will lose its status as the intellectual and cultural capital of America. The real estate market in California, at stretched valuations, will suffer. Minnesota, Oregon, Iowa, Maine and others will also feel the pain. Florida and Texas will become the new centers of finance and innovation, with real estate values in Austin and Miami -- and even Nashville -- reaching valuations once reserved for California and New York over the course of a few decades.

Posted by: Herb McCoy7309 || 01/04/2018 3:40 Comments || Top||

#2  Of bigger concern is how the leadership of high-tax states will respond. If individuals and businesses leave, eroding the tax base, states will face a choice between cutting spending or raising taxes.......I doubt many have the desire to cut services when faced with net migration out of the state.

Hence the desire of the left to embrace the undocumented illegal. Representative government is dependent upon a constituency. Numbers also effect federal funding.

Nigeria: Benue Killings - Police Arrest Eight Herdsmen
[All Africa] The Police in Benue say they have incarcerated
You have the right to remain silent...
eight herdsmen over the death of 10 persons and seven livestock guards in Guma and Logo Local Governments of the state on Monday.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Moses Yamu, announced this in a statement made available to the News Agency of Nigeria on Wednesday in Makurdi.

"Eight herdsmen, six in Guma and two in Logo, had been arrested in connection with the attacks," the police front man said.

He added that the command had made additional deployments to the troubled area to forestall further occurrence and restore confidence of the people.

Mr. Yamu stressed the situation in the two local government areas had been brought under control while investigation was ongoing.

He said: "They attacked Tomater village in Sengev Council ward, Akor village in Nzorov council ward and Bakin Kwata village in Umanger council ward of Guma LGA.

"Among those killed were seven (7) members of Benue State Livestock Guards, their vehicle burnt and an uncertain number of persons injured in separate attacks between 31/12/2017 and 02/01/2018.

"Again, Agba-Uko near Azege village and Tse-Aga village of Logo LGA experienced the same fate, where one person was killed, one cycle of violence burnt and four persons injured.

"All the injured from both LGAs are currently undergoing treatment in various hospitals in the State."

According to him, five combined teams of mobile and conventional coppers led by Assistant Commissioner of Police, Operations, Emmanuel Adesina, have engaged the armed herdsmen in a gun duel in Guma.

The Benue governor said on Tuesday that 20 people were killed in the attacks.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the Benue Anti-Open Grazing Law came into effect on November 1, 2017 to forestall attacks on Benue communities by suspected herders.

The law stipulates five year jail term or an option of N1 million fine for violators.

The attack is the first by suspected herdsmen since the law came into effect.

"We lost five security officers in the attack while on patrol on Elwak-Kotulo road but we are pursuing the attackers," Saleh said.

Two police reservists and two Administration Police officers died instantly while another police reservist died while being rushed to the hospital.

Daniel Bundotich, Mandera South Deputy County Commissioner said the dear departed were on normal patrol on the Elwak-Kotulo road and the attackers also burnt a police lorry while several officers were maimed in the ambush.

Bundotich said the first attack targeted a group of Administration coppers who were on patrol where two officers and three reservists were killed.

Texas County ‘Concealing’ Noncitizen Voter Records, Says Group
[BREITBART] A public interest watchdog put one Texas County on notice for failing to disclose noncitizen registered voter records, the group says.

Shortly before the holidays, the Indiana-based Public Interest Legal Foundation (PILF) sent a letter to attorneys representing Bexar County Elections Administrator Jacqueline Callanen to state her office is "hereby notified that it now faces federal litigation should [it] continue to deny access to requested" records related to voters that were later removed for failing to be U.S. citizens. The correspondence noted that Bexar County officials denied the group’s request to personally inspect or duplicate records on the matter in a letter sent on December 14.

The PILF shared its original request dated December 1, 2017, with Breitbart Texas. In that document, the group sought a variety of records in the hopes of determining how many non-U.S. citizens managed to join the local voter registry; the duration of time until they were discovered; and how they came into contact with the voter registration system in the first place. Also requested was any evidence or indication that illegally registered individuals were actually forwarded to proper law enforcement.

On December 14, the PILF received a curt letter from the office of Nicholas "Nico" LaHood, Bexar County District Attorney. Officials declared that under the National Voter Registration Act of 1993, the same law that PILF cited to seek access to the information, the County was not necessarily subject to such responsibility requiring transparency and access to records. Additionally, the Bexar County D.A.’s office stated that if any person on behalf of the PILF appeared to inspect the requested Bexar County Elections office records, they will be not be granted access beyond the receptionist.

Tasnim quoted Hamid Reza Bolhassani, a judicial official in Lorestan's city of Boroujerd, as saying the detained European had links with foreign intelligence agencies and had been "sent" to Boroujerd to instigate protests.

Last Thursday, Iranians erupted into the streets in the northeastern cities of Mashhad and Kashmar to protest rising inflation and perceived government mismanagement.

Over the last six days, the demonstrations -- which have included acts of violence -- have spread to other Iranian cities and in some cases have taken an increasingly anti-government tone.

At least 23 people have been killed -- including a police officer -- while hundreds more have reportedly been detained.

Earlier Wednesday, thousands of Iranians took part in pro-government rallies in the cities of Abadan, Ahwaz, Kermanshah, Gorgan and Khorramabad.

On the same day, Mohammad Ali Jafari, the head of Iran’s elite Revolutionary Guard Corps, accused the U.S. and Soddy Arabia

Witnesses say the men were tied to poles and rubbed out by masked button men after a self-proclaimed judge read out their verdict in front of a crowd at the execution ground.

Al-Shabaab, al-Qaeda’s East African affiliate, has fought for years to impose a strict version of Islam in the Horn of Africa nation.

Still, MDC-T youth leaders blamed Zanu PF rival Godwin Gomwe for the violence.

According to MDC-T activist Denford Ngadziore, Gomwe teamed up with dozens of ruling party youths and stormed the opposition party's offices armed with pistols and other missiles.

"Yes, we have been attacked by Zanu PF youths who were being led by Godwin Gomwe," Ngadziore told NewZim-bob-we.com.

"I am not so sure yet what the motive of the attack was but, I heard something happened at Zimex Mall a few days ago which we are yet to establish."

Gomwe however, distanced himself from the violence.

"I would like to categorically state that I was neither involved nor associated with the MDC headquarters violent disturbances, whether directly or indirectly," he said in a statement.

"I got the shock of my life when I came across a message on social media suggesting I was gun totting and leading in the violent acts. Whatever happened, not only was I not present, but I do not know anyone that sells phones at Zimex."

The Zanu PF Harare youth leader claimed that the fight was between vendors at Zimex Mall and MDC-T youths who allegedly looted mobile phones from the traders.

Yemeni sources: Nephew of slain ex-president alive
[Al Jazeera] Tribal sources in the Yemeni province of Marib have told Al Jazeera that Tareq Abdullah Saleh, the commander of the Presidential Guard and nephew of late ex-president former President-for-Life Ali Abdullah Saleh

Sources said a photo circulated on social media of Tareq Abdullah Saleh maimed during the same attack that killed the ex-president on December 4 is old.

They confirmed that Tareq Abdullah Saleh left the capital, Sanaa, to Marib on December 7 with several of his aides, three days after the killing of his uncle by Houthi

The sources added that forces loyal to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) stationed in Marib facilitated Tareq's departure by providing a plane on which he flew to the Gulf country.

The sources did not clarify whether Tareq remains in the UAE.

Two days before Ali Abdullah Saleh was killed by the Houthis, the ousted president publicly broke ties with his former allies and expressed his openness to talks with a Saudi-led coalition battling the rebels since 2015.

Norway suspends arms exports to UAE over war in Yemen
[Al Jazeera] Norway has suspended exports of weapons and ammunition to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) over concerns they could be used in the war in Yemen, the country's foreign ministry has told Al Jazeera.

20 civilians killed by Assad regime in E. Ghouta
[AA.TR] At least 20 non-combatants were killed in attacks by Bashir al-Assad regime forces in opposition-held parts of Syria’s Eastern Ghouta district, according to Syrian Civil Defense sources.

The Syrian Civil Defense organization, also known as the White Helmets, said that 11 civilians -- including White Helmets personnel -- were killed by regime attacks in the district’s Misraba area late Wednesday.

Another six people were killed in Arbin area of Eastern Ghouta Wednesday night, said the White Helmets adding that three more civilians, including two children, were also killed by regime Arclight airstrikes in Beyt Sava area.

The Russian air force bombarded the civilian settlements in the region to give air support to the regime forces that sieged the Eastern Ghouta and intensified its attack on civilians, according to White Helmet sources.

Hammuria, Duma, Haresta, Ayn Tarma, Madyara, Arbin, Kafar Batna, Misraba, Marj and Beyt Seva regions were also targeted with heavy artillery fires and airstrikes on Wednesday, said the group.

The maimed were taken to hospitals by Civil Defense teams.

Assad forces have been bombing Eastern Ghouta since Nov. 14.

Home Front: WoT
US judge orders government to release Iraqis or grant bond hearings
[ARABNEWS] A US judge ordered the government on Tuesday to either release Iraqi immigrants colonists it incarcerated
Don't shoot, coppers! I'm comin' out!
last year or grant them bond hearings, in the latest judicial curb on the Trump administration’s efforts to tighten US immigration.

Last year the federal government detained hundreds of Iraqi immigrants colonists who had been ordered deported years ago due to criminal convictions. Iraq until recently had refused to take them back, but struck a deal with the US in March to repatriate its citizens, sparking the immigration sweeps.

The Iraqis and civil rights groups representing them sued the federal government. US District Judge Mark Goldsmith, in bankrupt, increasingly impoverished, reliably Democrat, Detroit
... ruled by Democrats since 1962. A city whose Golden Age included the Purple Gang...
, had previously halted the deportation of the Iraqis, many of whom are Christian, who argued they would face persecution if they were sent back to Iraq.

In his ruling on Tuesday, Goldsmith said that any of the Iraqis held for six months or longer must either be released or granted a bond hearing before an immigration judge within 30 days.

"Our legal tradition rejects warehousing human beings while their legal rights are being determined," wrote Goldsmith.

The Trump administration has tried to deport the Iraqis as part of its push to increase immigration enforcement and make countries, which have resisted in the past, take back nationals ordered deported from the US.

Since June, immigration enforcement officers have detained approximately 300 Iraqi nationals with final deportation orders, according to information provided to the court by the Iraqis’ lawyers. There are approximately 1,400 Iraqis in the US with final deportation orders.

[DAWN] A Canadian man who was held captive by a faction of the Afghan Taliban

Drop the gat, Rocky, or you're a dead 'un!
on 15 charges including sexual assault, illegal confinement and issuing death threats, according to reports on Tuesday.

Joshua Boyle was freed by the Pakistain Army in October along with his American wife Caitlan Coleman and their three children born in captivity.

The identity of the alleged victim was being withheld by a court, according to Boyle's lawyer Eric Granger.

According to news channel CTV, Boyle is facing eight counts of assault, two counts of sexual assault and two counts of unlawful confinement, as well as one each of misleading police to "divert suspicion from himself," uttering a death threat, and administering a noxious substance, Trazodone.

Court documents acquired by the Toronto Star say the alleged offences occurred in Ottawa between Oct 14 and Dec 30.

In a statement to the Toronto Star, published on the newspaper's website, Boyle's wife would not comment on the specific charges.

"I can’t speak about the specific charges, but I can say that ultimately it is the strain and trauma he was forced to endure for so many years and the effects that that had on his mental state that is most culpable for this.

"Obviously, he is responsible for his own actions... but it is with compassion and forgiveness that I say I hope help and healing can be found for him. As to the rest of us, myself and the children, we are healthy and holding up as well as we can."

Suicide attack on Nigeria mosque causes multiple deaths
[Al Jazeera] A suicide kaboom on a mosque in northeastern Nigeria has killed at least 11 people, according to reports.

The incident took place in the town of Gamboru, in Nigeria's Borno state near the border with Cameroon
...a long, narrow country that fills the space between Nigeria and Chad on the northeast, CAR to the southeast. Prior to incursions by Boko Haram nothing ever happened there...

Witnesses said the bombing took place as worshippers were attending morning prayers.

"I was on my way to dawn prayer, then I heard the sound of a loud bomb kaboom inside the mosque," aid worker Ali Mustapha told Rooters news agency.

"The mosque was destroyed and burned," added Mustapha.

"After some hours, when we came to evacuate the people, we saw 11 corpses, with the jacket wallah making [the total number of dead] 12."

Manafort sues DOJ, Mueller over Russia probe authority
[CNN] Paul Manafort, the former Trump campaign chairman indicted on money laundering and other charges, filed a lawsuit challenging the broad authority of special counsel Robert Mueller and alleging the Justice Department violated the law in appointing Mueller.

The suit brought Wednesday in US District Court in Washington where Manafort and another former Trump campaign aide are charged, challenges Mueller's decision to charge Manafort with alleged crimes that they say have nothing to do with the 2016 campaign, but rather relate to lucrative lobbying work Manafort and his deputy did for a former Russia-friendly government in Ukraine. That work ended in 2014, the suit says. Manafort and his deputy Rick Gates deny the allegations in the charges.

Hezbollah says Iran controlling protests in 'good way'
[AA.TR] Hezbollah Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah said Wednesday that the ongoing protests in Iran were not rooted in political issues and were being handled by the regime in a good way.

"The crisis in Iran is due to economic reasons, not political," Nasrallah said in an interview with Lebanese al-Mayadeen channel.

The Leb-based group leader noted the incident erupted following some banks announced bankruptcy and added that some political circles were involved and then the protests gained a political dimension.

He argued that the incidents were being managed in a good way as the regime was handling it quietly, with the avoidance of anxiety.

Possible terror link after Japanese man stabbed to death in Dundalk, Ireland
[SkyNews] A Japanese man has been stabbed to death in a series of attacks in Dundalk, in the Republic of Ireland.

Two Irish men were also injured in linked attacks in the town, which is in County Louth, just south of the border with Northern Ireland.

An 18-year-old Egyptian man
...what odds that is his real age?
has been arrested and is being questioned by police.

Irish police have said that terrorism is one line of enquiry.

The first attack took place in Avenue Road when a 24-year-old Japanese man was stabbed in the back just before 9am as he was walking to work. He died at the scene.

Two further attacks took place in different locations across the town over the course of the next 40 minutes.

The second victim, a local man, was stabbed in Coes Road.

A third man - who is also local - was hit with an iron post at Seatown Place. Neither man's injuries are believed to be life-threatening.

The teenage suspect was apprehended around 40 minutes after the first attack took place, carrying a large fence post.

Police believe all the attacks were random and unprovoked, calling the dead man an "innocent bystander".

Irish police are attempting to contact the Japanese victim's family to inform them of his death.

Chief Superintendent Christy Mangan said: "A terror attack is a line of enquiry - it is certainly a line that we would look at."

Chief Supt Mangan said they believed the suspect was acting alone, and reportedly said he may have been "carrying at least two knives".
Suggesting that terrorism was his intent.
He also said they would be investigating the suspect's background and his reason for being in the country.

The teenager had come into contact with police on New Year's Day when officers were looking into his immigration status.
A known wolf.
It is understood he was seeking asylum in the Republic of Ireland.
Egyptians have no need for asylum, unless they are members of the Muslim Brotherhood or other jihadi groups, and then they shouldn’t be given it. At any rate, he isn’t likely to be granted asylum now.

The Ottoman Turkish president assured his Pak counterpart of full support and cooperation "in any situation", a blurb issued by the presidency said.

"Trump's conduct in spite of Pakistain's great sacrifices is undesirable," Erdogan was quoted as saying. He said Pakistain had rendered historic sacrifices in the war against terrorism.

President Hussain said Pakistain is a responsible country and would give an "appropriate response" to the US allegations. He said Pakistain believes in a policy of engagement and cooperation and regretted that its sentiments had not been respected.

Thanking the Ottoman Turkish president for expressing solidarity with Pakistain, Hussain said, "This love-filled message has made us feel proud."

Both the presidents reiterated that Pakistain and The Sick Man of Europe Turkey

A day earlier, China too had thrown its weight behind Pakistain and said that its key regional ally has "made outstanding contributions to the international anti-terrorism cause".

US says airstrike kills 2 militants in Somalia
[ARABNEWS] The US military said on Wednesday it had killed two snuffies in Somalia in an Arclight airstrike targeting al-Shabaab
... the Islamic version of the old Somali warlord...
, an al-Qaeda-linked hard boy group that is fighting to topple the UN-backed government.

The military’s Africa Command said the strike took place around 50km west of the capital Mogadishu on Tuesday, and that a "vehicle-borne improvised bomb" had also been destroyed in the early morning attack.

Last month Washington warned of a threat to its diplomatic staff in Mogadishu and directed all non-essential staff to leave the city.

Al-Shabaab was pushed out of Mogadishu in 2011 and has lost control of most of Somalia’s major towns. But the group retains a strong presence in the south and center and can still carry out major attacks. It was blamed for twin kabooms in Mogadishu in October that killed more than 500 people.

5 coppers killed

Meanwhile,
...back at the barn, Bossy was furiously chewing her cud and thinking...
five Kenyan coppers were killed in an attack on their vehicle in the northeast county of Mandera near the border with Somalia late on Tuesday, a government official in the area said.

Dozens of Kenyan security personnel have been killed in recent months in the remote lands near the border with Somalia, in raids by the al-Shabaab snuffies from Somalia. The group grabbed credit for the latest attack.

Daniel Bundotich, the deputy county commissioner for Mandera South, said those killed included three police reservists, local civilians who usually assist the police and are assigned uniforms and arms.

"The snuffies also set on fire a police lorry ... The coppers were on patrol along Elwak-Kutolo when they were ambushed," he told Rooters.

Al-Shabaab has also launched other attacks in Kenya targeting civilians, in Dire Revenge for Kenya moving its troops into Somalia in late 2011.

The snuffies aim to topple Somalia’s government, and to drive out African Union

'Backstabbing, Harassing, Lying': Trump Jr. Goes After Bannon
[FoxNews] President Trump's eldest son responded to accusations of "treasonous" behavior by Breitbart News executive Steve Bannon, a former White House adviser.

In excerpts from an upcoming book by Michael Wolff, Bannon criticized a meeting Donald Trump Jr. had with Russian nationals at Trump Tower in Manhattan, N.Y..

"Even if you thought that this was not treasonous, or unpatriotic, or bad s**t, and I happen to think it’s all of that, you should have called the FBI immediately," Bannon said.

Bannon also said the 40-year-old executive vice president of the Trump Organization will "crack like an egg" in any possible public testimony about the situation.

Trump Jr. fired back on Twitter late Wednesday, calling Bannon "an opportunist" who brought "a nightmare of backstabbing, harassing, leaking [and] lying" to the White House.

Keith Ellison Poses With Antifa Handbook
Is this what they call a dog whistle to his peeps?
[DAILYCALLER] Democratic National Committee Deputy Chair Keith Ellison endorsed Antifa
...the armed wing of the Democratic Party...
on Wednesday, tweeting a picture of himself smiling with an Antifa handbook.

Ellison posted a picture with "Antifa: The Anti-Fascist Handbook" and asserted that the book would "strike fear in the heart" of President Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
The book, written by Dartmouth professor Mark Bray, argues that "militant anti-fascism
...a political system developed in Italy, symbolized by the Roman fasces -- thin reeds, each flimsy in itself but unbreakable when bound into a bundle. Its distinguishing philosophical feature is the Corporate State. The word is nowadays thrown around by all sorts of people who have no idea what they're talking about...
is a reasonable, historically informed response to the fascist
...anybody not a leftist...
threat that persisted after 1945 and that has become especially menacing in recent years."

According to Bray, it is acceptable to use violence against "fascism" because what he considers to be fascist ideas ‐ like those shared by right-wing provocateur Milo Yiannopolous ‐ aren’t worthy of debate.

Bray also states that anti-fascists must be prepared to "physically confront the far right when necessary."

During an MSNBC interview in August, Bray even argued that Antifa needs to preemptively strike against white nationalists because "fascism cannot be defended by speech."

Turkey issues detention warrants for 68 Bank Asya shareholders in post-coup probe: Police
[AlAhram] Ottoman Turkish authorities have issued detention warrants for 68 shareholders of Bank Asya in an operation targeting the network of the holy man accused for orchestrating last year's failed coup attempt, the police said on Wednesday.

The operation, centred in Istanbul and encompassing nine provinces, targeted "class A" shareholders who had voting rights to determine the bank's administrative board, police said.

The state-run Anadolu news agency said 49 of the suspects were tossed into the calaboose so far.

Bank Asya was founded by followers of the U.S.-based holy man Fethullah Gülen

At least 7 Russian planes destroyed by shelling at Syrian air base
[Ynet] At least seven Russian planes were destroyed by rebel shelling at the Hmeymim air base in Syria on Dec. 31, Russian daily Kommersant reported late on Wednesday, citing two sources.

In the single biggest loss of military hardware for Russia since it launched air strike in Syria in autumn 2015, more than 10 servicemen were maimed in the attack by "radical Islamists", the report said.

At least four Su-24 bombers, two Su-35S fighters and an An-72 transport plane, as well as an ammunition depot, were destroyed by the shelling, Kommersant said on its website, citing two "military-diplomatic" sources.

Kommersant said the Russian defence ministry had not commented. Rooters was not able to immediately reach the ministry.

Earlier on Wednesday, the ministry said a Mi-24 helicopter had crash-landed in Syria on Dec. 31 due to a technical fault and two pilots died.

African migrants given 3 months to leave Israel or face jail
They haven’t been going just to Europe, and it didn’t start when that clever Chancellor Merkel issued her invitation to the Syrians fleeing civil war.
[Ynet] Amid protests from rights groups, Population and Immigration Authority calls on migrants colonists from Sudan and Eritrea to 'leave to their country or a third country', offering $3,500 to those who depart by April, and prison to those who refuse.

Israel is notifying thousands of Africans who entered the country illegally that they have three months to leave or face incarceration.

The Population and Immigration Authority called this week on migrants colonists from Sudan and Eritrea
...is run by the People's Front for Democracy and Justice (PFDJ), with about the amounts of democracy and justice you'd expect from a party with that name. National elections have been periodically scheduled and cancelled; none have ever been held in the country. The president, Isaias Afewerki, has been in office since independence in 1993 and will probably die there of old age...
to leave "to their country or to a third country," meaning Rwanda or Uganda. Those who leave by the end of March will be given $3,500, along with airfare and other incentives.

The ultimatum is part of a large-scale campaign to remove 42,000 illegal African migrants colonists from Israel.

Thousands of Africans entered Israel before it erected a fence along its border with Egypt. Many say they fled conflict and persecution and seek refugee status. Israel calls them "infiltrators" and says they are mostly economic migrants colonists whose numbers threaten its Jewish character.

Although the government unanimously approved a bill last month to close the Holot detention facility which houses African illegal immigrants colonists and asylum seekers, the plan still depends on successfully expelling the inhabitants to Rwanda, a move which has raised concerns among human rights
...which often include carefully measured allowances of freedom at the convenience of the state...
groups.

Israel and Rwanda recently signed an agreement whereby asylum seekers can be sent there even without their consent.

Asylum seekers have been sent to Rwanda for the past three years as part of a plan encouraging voluntary emigration.

Professor Galia Sabar, President of the Ruppin Academic Center, Chair of African Studies at Tel Aviv University and a scholar of Immigration, was the first to examine what actually happened to the Sudanese and Eritreans who left "willingly" to Rwanda with a promise that they would be able to start a new life there.

"Eritrean and Sudanese asylum seekers cannot be returned to their country of origin according to the UN charter," explained Sabar. "But Israel assumes that since he is a black African, we can send him to another African country. But how can he cope there? He has no work, he does not speak the language, the state does not offer a social net and he is not in a familiar or welcoming environment."

In August, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told residents of south Tel Aviv that he was facing a "mission to return" the area "back to Israel", three days after the High Court of Justice ruled that the State of Israel cannot detain illegal migrants colonists for more than 60 days.

Paying a rare visit to south Tel Aviv‐the area which has been seriously affected by the wave of illegal migration in recent years that swept through Israel’s once-porous southern border‐Netanyahu inaugurated a new cop shoppe and received a briefing from the police, before addressing the matter.

Indian authorities alarmed over signs of increasing militancy in Kashmir
[ARABNEWS] The involvement of two local Kashmiri boys in a suicide kaboom on a paramilitary camp in Indian-administered Kashmire on Sunday has rung alarm bells among security personnel and political experts who have rarely witnessed homegrown jacket wallahs.

Fardeen Mohiuddin Khanday and Manzoor Ahmad Baba, age 16 and 21 respectively, were among the three suicide bombers who targeted the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) camp at Lethpora in Pulwama in Kashmire on Dec. 31 in which five security personnel were killed.

Khanday was from Hiana in Tral area of Kashmire and Baba from Drubgam in Pulwama district of the valley.

"It is a serious and worrisome sign," said Suresh Paul Vaid, director general of police of Jammu and Kashmire.

Talking to Arab News, he said: "We are taking this matter seriously and are having high-level discussions."

Masood Hussain, the editor of Kashmire Life, a weekly magazine from Srinagar, also expressed alarm at this development.

"This is the first time we have local boys going inside a military establishment and blowing themselves up. It is a new aspect of militancy that we have not witnessed before," said Hussain to Arab News.

"This is the first time that the entire operation has been carried out by local boys. Security personnel here admit that this is a very disturbing trend in militancy in Kashmire," he added.

However,
death is not the end. There remains the litigation over the estate...
Srinagar-based senior journalist, Yusuf Jameel, said: "It is not a good sign for Kashmire that young educated boys are joining the myrmidons.

"This new trend of youngsters joining turbans began after the killing of Hizbul Mujahideen
...Party of Holy Warriors, founded by Muhammad Ahsan Dar in September 1989. One of the Pak sock puppets waging jihad in Indian Kashmir. It was originally organized as the armed wing of Jamaat-e-Islami. In 1990, Dar declared Hizbul as the sword arm of Jamaat. Hizbul murdered many of the pro-independence intelligentsia in Kashmir. After the organization was taken over by Syed Salahuddin Dar and several other ex-Hizb leaders were assassinated between 2001 and 2003...

Texas mosque leader apologizes for ‘Muslims will kill the Jews’ sermon
[WASHINGTONTIMES] A Texas mosque leader has apologized after he was accused of inciting violence in a sermon he gave last month that declared "the Moslems will kill the Jews."

Raed Saleh al-Rousan, imam and founder at the Tajweed Institute in Houston, said he respects all human life, including the Jewish people, and is "completely opposed" to anyone who would "commit, call for, or threaten violence against civilians."

His apology comes nearly a month after he gave an impassioned sermon responding to President Trump’s decision to formally recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

"Trump was mistaken," Mr. al-Rousan said Dec. 8, according to a clip translated by the Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI).

The imam reportedly said: "My brothers, the Prophet Muhammad brought the good tidings, when he said: ’Judgment day will not come until the Moslems fight the Jews. The Moslems will kill the Jews, and the Jews will hide behind the stones and the trees, [which] will say: Oh Moslem, oh servant of Allah, there is a Jew hiding behind me, come and kill him ... This is the promise of Allah.’"

The Anti-Defamation League deemed Mr. al-Rousan’s speech anti-Semitic and violent.

Mr. al-Rousan apologized in a pair of statements last week, saying he was "mortified" to learn that his remarks were being interpreted as supporting "the very things I despise."

"Regarding my sermon on Dec. 8th, 2017 it must be understood that I unequivocally affirm and uphold the dignity, sanctity and value of all human life, including ‐ of course ‐ people of the Jewish faith," he said. " I must also state in no uncertain terms that I am absolutely and completely opposed to and disgusted by all forms of terrorism, all terrorists, and I oppose anyone who would commit, call for, or threaten violence against civilians."

Mr. al-Rousan said he intends to work with the Jewish community "to alleviate any fears" and "combat hatred in all forms, most especially anti-Semitism and anti-Moslem bigotry."
Where is the apology? I see nothing beyond the story about the non-apology we saw a week ago.

History teaches us not to trust the United States, says Khawaja Asif
[DAWN] In response to US President Trump's tirade against Pakistain, Foreign Minister Khawaja Asif through a series of tweets reminded the United States of the services Pakistain had rendered during the past several years, particularly in the war against terrorism.

The foreign minister said, "The history teaches us not to blindly trust the US."

"You have asked what did we do? A dictator surrendered [before the US] on a single phone call, our country witnessed the worse bloodbath, you carried out 57,800 attacks on Afghanistan from our bases, your forces were supplied arms and explosives through our soil, thousands of our civilians and soldiers became victims of the war initiated by you," he tweeted.

The minister also highlighted the sacrifices rendered by Paks in the war against terrorism. He also talked about the cost Pakistain paid for its participation in the said war.

By Design you say?
Posted by: Bright Pebbles || 01/04/2018 8:08 Comments || Top||

#5  This explains it pretty well.

Basically it uses speculative execution to read an arbitrary address

Basically it does this via a side effect.

The execution doesn't stall when it reads from private memory, but continues until the processor separately decides if that location was allowed, (which is slow) so to stop a stall it AssUMes it works.

Now it uses the value it got from the memory multiplies it by the internal block size(4096) and that will request it.

Now before the exploit the 256 blocks of 4096 are made to be non-cached.

After the processor catches up with the non-allowed address (page fault) and reverts the speculative execution it will have un-cached a 4096 byte block of memory which will be at an offset representing the value of the byte at that (ARBITRARY!) address!

Brilliant!

#9  so, cache line invalidation only sorta works..

typically, when one switches tasks one does cache invalidation in SW,.

Basically, you need Translation Lookaside buffers in multi-core architectures, to allow flexibility in CPU processor core allocation. otherwise moving a task from one core to the other will take a big penalty, you have to re-load the cache..

Posted by: 3dc || 01/04/2018 10:26 Comments || Top||

#10  No idea what effects it has on virtual computers. Perhaps a solution is to fix it in virtualization and only have the new virtualization code running in ring 0 not an OS or program in anything but virtualization.
Posted by: 3dc || 01/04/2018 11:14 Comments || Top||

#11  Meltdown is also, short term, a very good argument for massive caches on the processor die. They would reduce the potential of a cache miss which opens these options. So if you are buying a new processor or machine optimize for the cpu with more massive on chip cache. (Intel top of the line of any design usually have much larger on chip cache)

#17  Are AMD processors affected?

Much, much less than Intel chips. All modern CPUs are vulnerable to Spectre attacks, but AMD says that its CPUs have “near zero” risk to one variant due to the way they’re constructed. The performance impact of Spectre patches are expected to be “negligible.”

There is “zero AMD vulnerability” to Meltdown thanks to chip design, AMD says. If operating system patches exclude AMD CPUs from the new Meltdown restrictions, the performance war between Intel’s chips and AMD’s new Ryzen CPUs may get even tighter.

3 Iran security force members killed in border clash
[AlAhram] Three members of the Iranian security forces were killed in festivities along the border with Iraqi Kurdistan, the Revolutionary Guards said in a statement on Wednesday.

The attack was not thought to be linked to the past week's unrest and protests.

The statement, reported by the conservative Mehr news agency, said the attack happened in the border area of Piranshahr, a region that sees sporadic festivities with Kurdish separatists based in Iraq.

Those responsible were still being pursued, the report said.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Revolutionary Guards deployed to crush Iran demonstrations
[ARABNEWS] Iran’s elite Revolutionary Guards deployed forces on Wednesday to three provinces to put down an eruption of anti-regime unrest as US President Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
assured the demonstrators of support "at a suitable time."

The protests, that have rattled the holy manal leadership and left 21 people dead, began last week out of frustration over economic hardships suffered by the youth and working class. Now they have evolved into a rising against the powers and privileges of a remote elite, especially Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Defying threats from the judiciary of execution if convicted of rioting, protests resumed after nightfall with hundreds hitting the streets of Malayer in Hamadan province chanting: "People are begging, the supreme leader is acting like God!"

Videos carried by social media showed protesters in the northern town of Nowshahr shouting "death to the dictator" ‐ an apparent reference to Khamenei.

Iranian opposition leaders in the UK are "disgusted" at the failure of British politicians, including Prime Minister Theresa May and Labour party leader Jeremy Corbyn to condemn regime brutality as the corpse count continues to climb seven days after protests began in Iran.

"Both the prime minister and the opposition party here have stayed completely silent when Iranian youth are being slaughtered in the streets of Iran," said Laila Jazayeri, director of the Association of Anglo/Iranian Women in the UK.

Three members of Iran’s intelligence forces were killed in festivities in the western city of Piranshahr on Wednesday, Mehr news agency reported, citing a statement from the Revolutionary Guards.

The three died "in a fight with anti-revolutionary elements," the statement read.

The statement did not say if the fight was related to the anti-government protests in Iran.

In a sign of official concern about the resilience of the protests, the Revolutionary Guards commander, Maj. Gen. Mohammad Ali Jafari, said he had dispatched forces to Hamadan, Isfahan and Lorestan provinces to tackle "the new sedition."

In a state-sponsored show of force aimed at countering the outpouring of dissent, thousands of Iranians also took part in pro-regime rallies in several cities on Wednesday morning.

State television broadcast live footage of rallies in cities across the country, where marchers waved Iranian flags and portraits of Khamenei, Iran’s paramount leader since 1989.

Turkish banker convicted in Iran sanctions-busting scheme
[IsraelTimes] Mehmet Hakan Atilla found guilty of bank fraud, conspiracy, in case which implicated Erdogan and strained US ties with Ankara

A Ottoman Turkish banker was convicted in New York on Wednesday in connection with a massive scheme to help Iran evade US sanctions, in a case that strained ties between Ankara and Washington.

A jury found Mehmet Hakan Atilla, deputy chief executive of Ottoman Turkish lender Halkbank, guilty of five counts of bank fraud and conspiracy.

The federal trial hinged on the testimony of well-connected Ottoman Turkish-Iranian businessman Reza Zarrab,
...who first appeared on our radar in late 2013 as an incidental item while then-Prime Minister Erdogan raged against the detention of dozens of his top people in a graft probe he blamed on the perfidy of his BFF Fethullah Gulen...
who became a government witness after admitting his involvement in the multi-billion-dollar gold-for-oil scheme to subvert US economic sanctions against Iran.

His testimony implicated former Ottoman Turkish ministers and even President Sultan Recep Tayyip Erdogan the First
... Turkey's version of Mohammed Morsi but they voted him back in so they deserve him. It's a sin, a shame, and a felony to insult the president of Turkey...
in the scheme, and identified 47-year-old Atilla as a key organizer.

Zarrab, a prominent gold trader, agreed to testify after striking a deal to plead guilty to violating US sanctions.

Before the trial, Erdogan reportedly pressed US President Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
to quell the investigation and strongly criticized Washington, calling the case a "plot" aimed at hurting The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...just another cheapjack Moslem dictatorship, brought to you by the Moslem Brüderbund....
Ouch. The auto-translator is clearly in a mood.
Acting US Attorney Joon Kim said the case was a warning to anyone who would violate US sanctions.

"Foreign banks and bankers have a choice: You can choose willfully to help Iran and other sanctioned nations evade US law, or you can choose to be part of the international banking community transacting in US dollars. But you can’t do both," Kim said in a statement.

"If you lie repeatedly to US Treasury officials and fabricate documents ‐ all as part of a secret scheme to smuggle billions of dollars in Iranian oil money past the US sanctions net ‐ as Atilla did, then you should be prepared for the consequences."

Senior Turkish official slams US conviction of banker

[Ynet] A senior Ottoman Turkish government official said on Wednesday that the conviction of Ottoman Turkish banker Hakan Atilla in the United States violated international law.

A US jury on Wednesday found Atilla, an executive at The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
's majority state-owned Halkbank, guilty of helping Iran evade US sanctions.

The official told Rooters the outcome of the trial would not hurt the Ottoman Turkish economy, banking system or Halkbank.

Saudi-led coalition: Houthis a constant threat to Yemeni people
[ARABNEWS] Houthi
...a Zaidi Shia insurgent group operating in Yemen. They have also been referred to as the Believing Youth. Hussein Badreddin al-Houthi is said to be the spiritual leader of the group and most of the military leaders are his relatives. The Yemeni government has accused the Houthis of having ties to the Iranian government, which wouldn't suprise most of us. The group has managed to gain control over all of Saada Governorate and parts of Amran, Al Jawf and Hajjah Governorates. Its slogan is God is Great, Death to America™, Death to Israel, a curse on the Jews ...
militias are a constant threat to the Yemeni people, and "have been in contact with the Iranian regime since 1994," Col. Turki al-Maliki, front man for the Saudi-led coalition, said Wednesday.

At a presser in Riyadh, he showed through videos that the coalition continues to accurately target the Houthis and their arsenal of weapons, and avoid civilians.

The Houthis are hiding ballistic missiles in deep caves in the Sanaa mountain of Nahdain, and coalition forces are monitoring the area round-the-clock, he added.

The Houthis have fired 86 ballistic missiles at Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
, and the latest attempt was thwarted, al-Maliki said.

He described as incorrect a statement by the UN humanitarian coordinator in Yemen, Jamie McGoldrick, that the coalition campaign has been a "failure."

All of Shabwa province is now liberated, and the coalition is fighting to oust the Houthis from the remaining 20 percent of al-Jouf, al-Maliki said.

While the Houthis are recruiting child soldiers, the coalition has launched a unit to help these children recuperate and reintegrate into civilian life, he added.

Saudi Arabia has provided the Yemeni people with aid by air, land and sea, and all ports are open and receiving humanitarian aid, he said.

Former Yemeni President former President-for-Life Ali Abdullah Saleh
... Saleh initially took power as a strongman of North Yemen in 1977, when disco was in flower, but he didn't invite Donna Summer to the inauguration and Blondie couldn't make it...
lost his life protesting the Houthi presence, al-Maliki added.

The coalition is communicating with many officials in Yemen
...an area of the Arabian Peninsula sometimes mistaken for a country. It is populated by more antagonistic tribes and factions than you can keep track of. Except for a tiny handfull of Jews everthing there is very Islamic...
who have expressed their willingness to desert the Houthis and join the legitimate government, he said.

Nigerians Tell of Being Used As Slaves in Libya
[All Africa] The European Union
...the successor to the Holy Roman Empire, only without the Hapsburgs and the nifty uniforms and the dancing...
(EU) is working with Libyan coastguards to reduce the number of migrants colonists crossing the Mediterranean Sea. But many of those intercepted end up in detention centres in Libya, where some migrants colonists say they are used as slaves, as the BBC found when it spoke to some Nigerians who have just returned home

As evening falls on Benin City, outside the mildewed 1960s block of one of the city's many hotels, a group of men and women are sitting on a scattering of plastic chairs, under a sign advertising "exotic cocktails" and "groovy nights".

But they are not here for drinks or dancing, they are about to start the hard work of rebuilding their lives.

They have come from Libya, where most of them were held in detention centres by the Libyan authorities. And they have returned with accounts of horrifying abuse, including being leased or sold as slaves.

Agen Akhere has a round, baby-face but his small eyes are searing red. He is sniffling as he talks, and looks like he might well up with tears.

He was held for two months in a detention centre in a place called Gharyan. He was registered by the UN's migration agency (IOM), released from the detention centre and flown home - but his friend did not make it.

"It's because of money," he said, pleading and craning his neck to get closer to the microphone. "My friend, he's still there. His name is Samson. He's still there, in Gharyan."

Gharyan is a prison in the mountains about 100km (60 miles) south of Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...
. And it is a place where all of the migrants colonists we spoke to were taken before they made it home.

Israeli jets strike Gaza in retaliation for shelling
[IsraelTimes] Army says it targeted 'significant terror infrastructure' in coastal enclave, hours after mortar shells land in open areas in Israel

Israeli jets overnight Wednesday-Thursday carried out Arclight airstrikes in the Gazoo Strip, in retaliation for mortar fire earlier in the day.

Paleostinian murderous Moslems in the Gazoo Strip had fired three mortar shells into southern Israel on Wednesday, but caused no injuries or damage, the army and police said.

In a late-night statement, the army said the overnight raids targeted "significant terror infrastructure," without elaborating.

"The IDF will continue to use all the measures at its disposal, above and below ground, to thwart attacks against Israelis," the military said. "We are prepared and ready for a variety of scenarios and will act against any attempts to violate Israeli illusory sovereignty."

There were no immediate reports of injuries from the Israeli airstrikes.

The launches from Gazoo on Wednesday took place over a period of four hours. Police said two shells landed in open fields in the Eshkol region, and it was not immediately clear where the third landed.

Warning sirens were not triggered by the first two launches, apparently because the shells were heading toward unpopulated areas.

This was the fifth projectile from Gazoo to hit Israeli territory in under a week. There have also been a number of unsuccessful attempts, in which rockets were launched at Israel but failed to clear the border, landing instead inside Gazoo.

On Monday night, murderous Moslems in the Gazoo Strip fired a rocket at Israel that also hit an open field in the Eshkol region, causing neither injury nor damage.

On Friday, murderous Moslems in Gazoo fired three mortar shells at southern Israel, apparently in an attempt to interrupt a ceremony for a fallen IDF soldier whose remains are being held by Hamas, the well-beloved offspring of the Moslem Brotherhood, in the coastal enclave. Two of the mortars were shot down by the Iron Dome missile defense system, while the third struck an Israeli community on the border, causing light damage to a building.

On Wednesday, the military completed an investigation of the Friday attack, determining it to have been the work of the Iran-backed Paleostinian Islamic Jihad
...created after many members of the Egyptian Moslem Brotherhood decided the organization was becoming too moderate. Operations were conducted out of Egypt until 1981 when the group was exiled after the assassination of President Anwar Sadat. They worked out of Gaza until they were exiled to Lebanon in 1987, where they clove tightly to Hezbollah. In 1989 they moved to Damascus, where they remain a subsidiary of Hezbollah...
terrorist group.

Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman on Saturday said the mortar shells in that attack were supplied to Gazoo terror groups by Iran.

The air force had retaliated against the Friday barrage as well, carrying out two series of strikes over the weekend.

The recent attacks came two weeks after a period of near-daily attacks earlier in December. The past month has seen the largest incidence of rocket fire from the Strip since the 2014 Israel-Hamas war.

According to Israeli assessments, the rockets are not being launched by Hamas, but by other terrorist organizations in Gazoo.

The army believes that Hamas, which rules the Gazoo Strip, has been struggling to rein in other terrorist groups in the enclave and prevent them from carrying out attacks on Israeli targets.

On Tuesday, IDF Chief of Staff Gadi Eisenkot responded to the calls from Israeli politicians and public figures for more aggressive retaliations, dismissing them as "irresponsible."

CIA, Mossad have orchestrated recent violent riots in Iran: Analyst
[PRESSTV] The recent protests in Iran were partly orchestrated by American and Israeli intelligence agencies, with clear signs of Western interference in the ensuing violent riots, says a political analyst and author in reliably Democrat Chicago, aka The Windy City or Mobtown
... home of Al Capone, a succession of Daleys, Barak Obama, and Rahm Emmanuel,...
"Everyone should be suspicious when something like this happens, especially when the western media and western officials, especially [US President Donald] Trump jump all over these things, and bash Iran, blame Iran for mistreating its people and so on and so forth," Stephen Lendman told Press TV on Wednesday.

"I believe what is happening is the protests were orchestrated by the CIA, I believe complicit with Israel’s Mossad," Lendman said.

The violence is "a clear tip-off that foreign interference is behind what’s happening," he added.

Since Thursday, groups of Iranian protesters have staged demonstrations in several cities over rising prices and economic hardships, which are partly the result of years-long illegal US-led economic sanctions against the country.

The peaceful protests turned violent when groups of participants, some of them armed, vandalized public property and launched attacks on cop shoppes and government buildings.

Over a dozen people have been killed in the ensuing violence, according to state media reports.

In a series of tweets on Wednesday, Trump again expressed his support for rioters in Iran, saying they are finally taking action against the country’s government.

Egypt court slaps 10 regime opponents with jail terms
[AA.TR] An Egyptian court on Wednesday slapped ten opponents of the regime with between 10 and 15 years each in prison for "acts of violence" that occurred in the Giza province (a part of Greater Cairo) in 2014.

According to an unnamed judicial source quoted in the local media, the Giza Criminal Court sentenced Mohammed Ibrahim Mohammed Abdul Hamid (in absentia) to 15 years behind bars.

Nine others were sentenced to 10 years each in prison after being convicted, along with Abdul Hamid, of "using force against coppers," the source said.

The case dates back to December 2014, when Egyptians opposed to the country’s 2013 military coup -- led by then-defense minister (now president) Abdel-Fattah al-Sissi -- staged an anti-regime demonstration in Giza’s restive Kirdasa district.

A single defendant in the case was acquitted due to a lack of evidence, the same source said, adding that Tuesday’s raft of sentences remained subject to appeal before the Court of Cassation, Egypt’s highest appellate court.

The state and diyat
[DAWN] Qisas provides for the aggrieved to have the right to inflict injuries equal to those sustained by the victim, though such verdicts have never been handed out through formal courts. Diyat allows the offender to provide compensation or blood money for the crime to the victim’s family. The law privatises the crime, the state becomes a passive observer as people make independent decisions on whether the killing of citizens should be punished, forgiven or bargained over.

The provision to forgive murders has been particularly harmful for women. With interfamily marriages being so common, women are routinely murdered in the name of ’honour’ by men in their family and the perpetrators forgiven by other men in the family. In countless cases, this has meant a father forgiving his son for killing his daughter, or an uncle forgiving his nephew. After decades of such injustices, there have been recent changes in the law qualifying when diyat is applicable. But the issue did not register in the public consciousness till invoked in two high-profile cases involving the murder of men: Raymond Davis, and now, Shahrukh Jatoi. That diyat protects Pakistain’s rich and powerful at the expense of justice is clear through both cases, but people are hesitant to openly challenge the law given the emotions that erupt at any criticism of laws based on religion.

But the law mirrors the same tribal code prevalent in many parts of the world in the seventh century, including in the nomadic tribal society of Arabia. Diyat was a formula with which tribes could administer justice in a standardised way that did not require the presence of a centralised authority and provided an alternative to vengeance where blood feuds raged. It existed in the form of an important legal mechanism in early Germanic society, and was called weregild in what is today England, ericfine in Ireland, vira in Russia and glowsczyzna in Poland. It was a critical part of Teutonic laws in the Frankish Salic Code applicable in what is today La Belle France, Netherlands and Belgium, and it continued to be in effect till the Holy Roman Empire put an end to it in the 12th century.

Ethiopia to pardon political prisoners, shut prison
[Al Jazeera] Æthiopia has announced plans to release political prisoners and shut an infamous prison in the capital, Addis Ababa, in a surprise move the government says aims to "foster national reconciliation".

The office of the Æthiopian prime minister said charges would be dropped against politicians currently being prosecuted, while political prisoners who are imprisoned will receive pardons, the Addis Standard magazine reported.

"Politicians currently under prosecution and those previously sentenced will either have their cases annulled or be pardoned," AFP news agency quoted Hailemariam Desalegn as saying on Wednesday.

Desalegn made the announcement alongside other leaders in the Æthiopian Peoples' Revolutionary Democratic Front, the country's ruling political coalition.

He envisaged that a regional order led by Turkey would emerge on the back of these uprisings. From the vantage point of 2012, when Erdogan was still prime minister of Turkey and Davutoglu his foreign minister, this grand vision was nearly realized. In Tunisia and Egypt, the Moslem Brüderbund assumed power via the ballot box and began its efforts to transform state structures in accordance with its political agenda. In Libya and Syria, Islamist movements supported by Turkey dominated the battlefield.
