#3 After the wall fell, NATO should have thrown a great big victory party and disbanded.

Not really surprising to see this nowdays. Germany and the US's geopolitical goals are not aligned now and distrust in normal. I just see this as further validation that keeping US troops in Europe is not needed and Europe can go its own way.

Yep. Sadly, once established, bureaucracies never go away. They just find new missions, like NATO in Afghanistan.
