#2 Seems to me that they might put a stop to this if they outlawed polygamy. If the longbeards decide that there are just too many men and they can't have their two, three, or four wives, then it might be in their interest to do things that result in a depletion of the male population in order to provide an ample supply of eligible females.

It would be awfully hard for these guys to amass their stables of women if the population were more equally divided. That, combined with the culture that makes it nearly impossible for a single woman to survive on her own, would give an incentive to foment violence that results in lots of young men being killed.
