#3 Anwar is an Islamist. This is how he rose through the ranks - he used to be the head of ABIM, an Islamist youth movement in Malaysia. Al Gore loved this guy, but his beliefs make Mahathir's look tame. Mahathir says things just to shore up his support because his credentials among Islamists suck. This is why Mahathir consistently got majorities from the non-Muslim voters in Malaysia - he would say one thing and do another.

Anwar actually believes the things that Mahathir says, but his credibility among Islamists is so solid that he doesn't have to say them out loud for them to support him. The reason Anwar's facial hair is so thin, is not because he's a moderate - it's because he can't grow any more of it. Moderate Muslims in Malaysia are like Mahathir - they shave all their facial hair off. Note that Anwar's wife wears a head covering. Mahathir's wife doesn't. From what I've read, Malaysia's non-Muslim minority is pretty leery of Anwar because the man is good at hiding his true beliefs.
