#1 When Morsy and his Muslim Brotherhood emptied the Egyptian prisons in 2011 many of the Egypt Islamic Jihad and Gamaat al-Islamiya mujahideen reorganized in the Sinai. Their purpose was twofold: Support Hamas in Gaza, and threaten the Israeli flank in the Negev. The muj attracted many followers, including Brothers from Gaza, and they have been difficult to root-out.
