I acknowledge my own paranoid view of the world, but if he lived in one of the most secure areas of Abidjan, an area under government control, next to the embassy and close to the building where they are holding the opposition leaders... #7 Abidjan has had a nasty crime problem for a while.
A mugging isn't altogether impossible. Maybe the
pickings started getting leaner thanks to the
rebellion, and one of the gangs has started trying
to branch out into a richer section of the city.
