#2 Probably someone brought it to the court's attention that the fois gras production method is highly cruel to animals -- and an large section of Jewish law is based on reducing cruelty wherever possible. I'm surprised it took this long.

#3 Also IIRC a lot of the EU has banned it and Israel would prefer to keep its markets for produce etc. there, insofar as it has them, I would guess.

#4 According to the article, the advisory panel told them that according to Jewish law, it wasn't cruel, but the Israeli Supremes ignored them and went with the European interpretation.

Maybe they have the same problem some of our Supreme Court justices have, forgetting whose laws they are supposed to judge.

#6 The 'causing needless pain' principle was used to develop the rules for slaughtering animals about 20 centuries ago and the application of those rules to new circumstances like caging and feeding of animals is a relatively recent innovation.

It is true that the Israeli court is creative in determining law. But that is partly because Israel does not have a written constitution (also because judges are liberal).

Will you argue that slashing the throat of animals and bleeding them to death is reduced cruelty? I am not arguing that there aren't much more horrific ways to kill animals, but...
