#3 I think what we see here is the birth of the new Afghanistan. Watch for them to do it a bit different. They will build up their military focusing on the Hezbullah or Hamas models. Bet the money pipes are flowing from Sods and Iran.

We need to be preemptive here or we will eventually have to take them down as well.

#8 First off, the weapondry in the rump failed state of Somalia is all Soviet/Combloc stuff, most leftover from the wars Somalia and Ethiopia fought in the 1980s. Second, all that the Islamists control is a chunk of southern Somalia that includes Mogadishu. They have NOT taken on either Puntland or Somaliland, and you know when they do by the huge number of Islamist causulties. Both Puntland and Somalialand have a basic army that has a much higher level of training than the khat-chewer gunnies that the Islamists use. Also, Somaliland at least is getting covert Ethiopian military training, by some of the best that the Ethiopians and Israelis can provide. Israeli mercs have been operating in that general area for the past several years, with unofficial consent of the two governments. They gather intel, track problems, and provide training for the correct sides in this multi-faceted war.
