#2 During the outbreak of black plague in Italy, the Duke of Milan issued a decree that any household which demonstrated the symptoms of the disease was to be sealed along with all its inhabitants. It was done. It, by todays standards, was cruel. However, given medical knowledge available then, it was a solution which as it turned out, worked. Milan remained an island of health compared to the surrounding geography. A quarter of Europe would die in the plague as it burned across the land.
