#1 That rumour was already causing problems when Mr. Wife was hired upon graduation in 1981. His mother, a very religious lady, was extremely upset by what she heard at church in Buffalo, NY about the goings on in Cincinnati. This wasn't just a single rumour circulated within the Amway corporate phone system, then immediately countered. Amway salesmen made this an unofficial but effective part of their sales presentation, and spread it widely through their social circles. Then it made its way to church circulars, mass faxes and later mass emails. I was asked about it in Prague, whence Amway ventured after the Berlin Wall fell.

P&G had to put in extra telephone lines and hire staff to handle the hundreds of thousands of consumer calls, they lost sales, and this has been a stain on the reputation of a company exceedingly concerned with maintaining a reputation for probity.

The urban legends section of About.com has four entries relating just to this rumour, Snopes has one, as do several Christian websites. Even the Catholic Church felt compelled to weigh in. Several talk shows that rumour claims this revelation was made on have had to actually post a refutation on their websites, they've had so many indignant contacts over the years.

The article's slant and the position of the Amway representative quoted therein are exceedingly disingenuous.

#4 "Despite the public apology, P&G has spent 12 years destroying their lives," Makled said. "P&G is a $68 billion company. What they got out of this case was what they could earn in about 2.5 hours. We think that's shameful."

It think it's shameful that a company has to abandon their historical logo solely because of some unethical greedy bastids who richly deserved to have their lives tied in legal knots by a company that rightfully could afford to. Amway is two hairs shy of a Ponzi scheme and this ruling is a needed blow to their reputation. If a headcount was taken today, I wonder how few many would actually belong to an Amway millionaire's club? (Earned solely through Amway activity.)
