#1 Give them an inch, and they'll keep taking. With these kinds of people, the only answer is to hit them every time and everywhere they raise their ugly heads. Unfortunately, that' not "acceptable" to a portion of our society that thinks we should only play 'nice'. Playing nice with terrorists gets you killed.

#2 The next president is going to be faced with a very bad situation here, and the only way to effectively deal with it is what OP indicates. These people are savages. They will drag any and all back to the stone age, an environment which they seem quite comfortable living in.

#3 Although this gives the jihadi consortium a place to train safely, thus far as soon as they leave to set up an incident, they get caught (eg the recent Barcelona captures), suggesting we're linked in to their communications. And, so long as their focus is on the Pakistani civil war, the invasions of Afghanistan will be fewer and less effective. The only thing I want from Pakistan is control of their nuclear program and all its bits and pieces.

I do hope Iran is dealt with before the next president is sworn in. We've been waiting a long time for that to be resolved.
