#1 Why do they always catch these "spies" while they are alone instead of part of a group?

#2 Calling someone a "spy" gives the Taliban a "license to kill", whether the accusations are legitimate or not. I'd suspect most of these people are just villagers who don't kowtow to the Taliban line, and are removed before they can become an example for others to follow. I'd bet that NONE of them are actually working with the US.

#3 They have to have some HUMINT somewhere. I'm sure it's not done directly with a Special Forces sargeant peeling off $100 bills, but through a series of intermediaries.

#5 I like to think there's more than just a little paranoia involved in some of these killings. But it's also probably a safe bet that many of the victims are people the Taleban wanted to rub out anyway and calling them spies serves the added purpose of terrorizing the rest of the populace.
