#1 Let's not just throw rocks at Indians. I'd bet, if Dr. Steve was willing to talk, he's either seen or heard of such threats/actions in American hospitals. I've read of numerous cases in which gang members have come into E.R.s with bullet-riddled accomplices and told the attending medical personnel that they would either save said accomplice or die themselves.

People doing such things are simply displaying the logic that Heinlein explained when he said that any sufficiently advanced technology was like magic. All these gun-waving boneheads know is that hospitals contain the magic of healing people, and that if their friend/relative/loved one isn't saved it's because the people who work there just weren't willing to do what was necessary.

Ignorance, stupidity and fear are a damned dangerous combination of elements, the mixing of which almost invariably leads to violence.

Hunh? This is from the Times of India. If any one is throwing rocks, it's the Indians.

I won't say you haven't, though I haven't, but given the prevalence of EMS, fire and police personnel in ERs, I suspect the thugs would be nominated for Idiot of the Day by their fellow Americans here at the burg.

Of course they're benighted fools, N.S. as are the Indians doing the same thing. I'm just saying that this isn't solely an Indian phenomenon. Actions like this come about when un-or ill-educated people encounter problems with advanced technologies they have no way to understand.

The British, when they were running refineries in Iran for the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company, found they had to buy solid gearwheels as opposed to the regular, skeletonized type. Seems the locals kept getting seriously injured by sticking hands and feet in them because when the gearwheel was spinning at speed they couldn't see anything but the outer ring.

Since they couldn't see the supporting spokes, their logic assumed they had disappeared and no amount of persuasion/argument/explanation by the British seemed to sink in. In the end, it was just easier to buy solid gearwheels.

Both cities are in (very roughly) the same region of India. Perhaps our John Frum might have insight into whether that is coincidental.

#5 Saw a couple situations at the County, usually rival gang-bangers put too close to each other in the Trauma Unit. Even with holes in them they had to display how they were muy macho. But we had good security -- I had no idea a sheriff's deputy could be that big -- so the docs, nurses and students never were touched.

#6 I don't know if India has the problem of retardation and physical handicaps due to marriage of close relatives but I wouldn't be surprised if this were a consideration in these incidents.
