#1 "said all troops on overseas duty were counselled about safe sex and contraception before they left Australia and they would be doubly reminded of those principles in future."

How does hemmoroids, being the fattest person in the room, having a human head pressing on your bladder, colic, and diaper changing sound as reminders to use birth control?

#3 of course, a free ride home when the bush is not as 'romantic' (sarc) as you thought it might be sure makes getting preggers the perfect escape hatch

#4 last year more than 100 British female soldiers were sent home for being unable to say no to a man in uniform.

We're denying and sending home the bloody God given answer to the entire conflict.... WESTERN REPOPULATION!

#5 Hint: the women badly, badly want children and are willing to do anything to get them. Duh! "Yes baby, I'm on the pill, I won't get pregnant." One conception later, and she has financial support for the next 18 years.

She could be flown back to the States to give birth to little Edward. He'd have US citizenship, voting rights, and Social Security as well! Oh, I forgot.... he's from the UK. Barry would never approve of that. He'd probably turn up a conservative and republican.

#7 There's another possibility. We know Labor tried to run military on the cheap. Maybe, they provided fem soldiers with pills bought from the lowest bidder (i.e. Chinese).

#9  It works 99% of the time...

The "birth control" pill when used as directed. Either God or someone is laughing. I have friends who "accidentally" became preggers on the shot. Sure, sweetheart, if you say so.
