Add it to the list of answers to 'what has war ever achieved?'

The Tamil Tigers would never have accepted a reasonable outcome to the conflict; they had to be defeated with violence.

#3 I see that history's also getting a bit of a rewrite. "The deal fell apart when government troops took up arms again in 2008."

That was in response to the Tigers using the ceasefire to rearm, trying to run a low-level war of attrition behind its shield, bumping off dissident Tigers and the occasional government adherent, and issuing a continuing series of truculent statements similar to Iran's daily spew.

The Lankans Gave Peace a Change™ and it didn't work. Military operations did.

#4 No Joe M, Canada wants no part of this process.

Canada (Toronto) has a large Tamil population and the Tigers have been very successful raising (extorting) money co-opting federal politicians (of a mostly liberal and multicultural persuasion) to their cause.

No one in the Great White North or Sri Lanka wants to get involved.
