#4 Saving face. It's bad enough that the CIA is not only sending drones all over the wild border areas with impunity, and mere CIA contractors like the arrested Mr. Davis roam major cities, carrying guns to defend themselves from being mugged, but American Special Forces can helicopter in from Afghanistan to steal a special guest out from under the noses of Pakistan's West Point generals. If Pakistan can't claim control of the operation, at very least the government is likely to fall, it seems to me.

#5 No doubt the Pakistainis finally dropped a dime on their foreign guest, otherwise there would be a lot more fireworks and a little battlespace prep for this operation. The interesting question is why now? I suspect the motivation was money and how to keep it coming in. I also suspect there are some new vacancies at the ISI now.
