#1 Ex Brit troopie Max Velocity now offers contact drills classes and patrol classes.

It occurred to me the other day that gun fighting is a completely different game than target shooting. A lot (most?) of you are going "Well, duh!", but it was a revelation to me. Might need to do something about that, given a future of uncertainties.

#2 Yet keep in mind that alot of citizens manage to do okay even without the training. I'm not saying the training is bad, but many people can't afford to drop 300-500 bucks on a tactical gun class.

My wife and I are going to take the concealed carry class here in Texas when this hitch ends and I get back onshore. Looking forward to that because I worry more about her than me.

If I could, I'd love to spend the money to have us both take some good home defense pratical courses, but money is quite tight.

#3 Last month I took a NRA "Basics of Personal Protection in the Home" night course. Very interesting shooting silhouette target in the dark. Setup was from a kneeling position behind a simulated bed. The intruder was at 21ft* in poor light and had been warned 911 on the line and you were armed.

The task was to take your weapon from normal storage place and get off two 5rd mags rapid fire*. We did several cycles, one with a "stovepipe" jam to clear and another with a simulated misfire/jam (instructor slipped snap cap in first mag).

This situation involved shooting without taking time to get a sight picture which I couldn't see anyway. My first shooting cycle had too tight a group for the instructor so I worked on spreading the rounds north and south between the Adam's apple and the laticables.

I have several choices for how the gun is stored since my weapon has a external safety and is SA/DA.

1. Slide open, loaded mags out of weapon.
2. Mag in, chambered round, safety on.
3. Mag in, chambered round, safety off, hammer down.
4. Slide open, loaded mag in weapon, no chambered round.
5. Loaded mag in weapon no chambered round.

We have no children and our cat is not that curious so I think for KiloBravo's sake I'll pick door three. I've instructed KB in first round DA shooting and wouldn't want her worrying about inserting mags or switching safeties off when in a stressful situation.

*Why 21ft and why rapid fire:

Our Instructor introduced us to the concept known as Tueller's drill. It is a drill which shows that most people can cover 21 feet in about 1.5 seconds.

"Sgt. Dennis Tueller of Salt Lake City Police Department conducted experiments which led to the conclusion that an attacker with a knife in his hand covers 21 feet in 1.5 seconds. Therefore anything under 21 feet is considered to be in the zone of "imminent danger of death or great bodily harm."

In other words a person with a knife or any edged weapon is a direct and imminent threat to you if that person is within 21 feet (7 yards).

Research shows that a person with a knife who is closer than 7 yards can stab or cut you before you can stop them with a gun.

Most police officers, even with the gun already in hand, cannot hit a target twice before the "assailant" can cover 10 yards.

All the the knife wielding assailant has to do is get within 7 yards before rushing you and you are in mortal danger."

#4 In my 20 +years of carrying a pistol, I'v attended several high end LEO/Mil only school. I've been trained by some of the military's most elite. To a man they say the same thing. Practice the basics and master the fundamentals. You can do a lot of work at home dry firing with snap caps. While nothing replaces trigger time, you should the ground at your abode and know it cold in darkness or light.

#6 Well spoken Billy, KiloBravo and I practice in the house with a Laserlyte 9mm cartridge and target. We can set up any scenario in the house and blast away. We even have a 15m range setup than runs from Kilobravo's bathroom, down the hall and across the livingroom.

Besides 9mm, Laserlyte also makes a .38, .40 and .45 cal acp in chamber laser cartridges. They have additional in chamber laser cartridges for rifles starting with .223 and with sleeves additional calibers.

Our next purchase may be their Reaction Tyme Target system. With this system you can take on multiple targets placed around the room.
