#5 But what does it mean to Saudi Arabia? After all, isn't posession of the two Mosques the n'est plus ultra of Islamic control? One would think that a caliphate has to have that to have legitimacy.

What do the head turbans in Qom, Cairo, Mecca etc. have to say about this?

#6 The head turbans are waiting to see if ISIS can keep what it has gained. If they still have it in a few months the "idea of caliphate" will start to take hold.

#8 These kids/amateurs should all be fired and replaced with someone who knows what the heck they are doing. They should pay great attention to this growing menace, get their "collective" heads out of the sand and figure out how to deal with it. There is no identifiable coherent strategy.

#9 I wonder if anybody is looking at the opportunities afforded by such a declaration. As AlanC notes, who runs the caliphate isn't obvious from Islamic principles, and there are plenty of candidates who, with a little encouragement, might be willing to dispute each others' claims.
