#5 They might be self-sufficient on occasion, but for the most part I believe they use it to keep the masses in line. This will never work until the socialists go away.

#9 Hey there is precedent: Stalin got the Ukraine self sufficient eventually. After destroying the farms by collectivizing them, he then killing millions by starvation -- so he didn't have to feed them from the reduced output of his collectivized farms. Less people = problem solved for communists.
