#1 before we get to holier than thou on this..

Anyone with any knowledge of the purpose of education knows that it isn't meant to 'promote the ideology' of any country -- that's called brainwashing.

A friend of the family was a education/history professor at U of Nebraska Lincoln in the late 50s early 60s. UNL has always had a large correspondence course system. One of his books and courses was turned into one.

One fine day in Addas Ababa a communist rabble rouser quoted from him in demonstration. In the audience was a CIA Agent. He heard

"In times of war even the most enlightened civilizations naturally tend toward barbarism."

Soon our prof friend was before the House Comm. on Unamerican Activities. It was demanded that he remove the the phrase. He refused. Then he was lectured by the committee

"DO YOU KNOW WHY SCHOOLS TEACH HISTORY?"

He started to explain but was interrupted and told.

"NO. WE ALLOW IT FOR THE PURPOSE OF PROMOTING PATRIOTISM!"

He was held in contempt of Congress for refusing to change his textbook.
