#2 I'm second guessing of course, but the war would be a lot shorter if if a bust like this involved a hyperdose of Valium or something similar, followed by questions re

where'd the explosives come from?
names and locations of suppliers
where'd the money come from? That crap's not free, y'know
where was the money before that? It didn't sprout at the hawala place
how'd it get there? It doesn't transport itself, and unless it's palletized (5x5 cubes) you can pretty well guess what it is
who put the operation together? Mahmoud, out in Booniestan, didn't get up one morning and decide to ship IEDs, ammonium nitrate, potassium nitrate, mortar rounds, drugs, and BM1 warheads to... somebody. Somebody else, siting somewhere else, thought it would be a nifty idea and did the coordinating

There are a lot more questions on the list, but you get the general idea. The idea that you have to take an electric drill to a person's kneecaps is a sign you're dealing with someone with sexual hangups or no access to drugs. If it's the latter, the answers will come two days later, when the other kneecap is about to be drilled.

The second half of the equation is that once you have the answers you have to follow up on them. Even through the haze of open source and incompetent reporting we've noticed that this ort of thing runs in families (do a quick browse on the bali bombers, back in October 2002 if you don't believe it.) Next to family comes friends. All those friends who're so surprised the guy could be involved in such antisocial activity were frantically burying the guns ad explosives down at the mosque yesterday.

Maybe there's a guy at KhAD headquarters with a box of 3x5s who knows everything about the structure of the insurgency, but he hasn't been telling the guys with the trenchcoats and sunglasses.
