#1 Maybe Badanov can comment, but wasn't this more about getting Western currency or paying off debts (forgive me, I can't remember) than a "genocide"?

#2 The original plan was threaten the Ukrainians into giving up pretensions to independence and rejoin the union, DooDahMan — now Russian instead of Soviet, but otherwise still the same Great Russia-dominated empire. But as the Ukrainians bloodied Russian noses in their continued defiance, the propaganda changed from freeing the brotherly Little Russians from the Nazis leading them astray to killing all the “Nazis” who dare insist that Ukrainians have their own language and history separate from Russia’s. And in the meantime Russia has made off with a good portion of Ukraine’s grain stores, just as they did during the Holodomor, and interfered with planting and harvesting the next crop...
