[AlAhram] Killings by gangs more than doubled last year, according to the United Nations ...the Oyster Bay money pit...
Men armed with knives, machetes and pick-axes killed 10 people in an overnight attack on a village in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo ...formerly the Congo Free State, Belgian Congo, Zaire, and who knows what else, not to be confused with the Brazzaville Congo aka Republic of Congo, which is much smaller and much more (for Africa) stable. DRC gave the world Patrice Lumumba and Joseph Mobutu, followed by years of tedious civil war. Its principle industry seems to be the production of corpses. With a population of about 74 million it has lots of raw material... , a witness and a local rights group said on Tuesday, blaming an Islamist militia. "Done with tradition, just like Granpaw used to do"
Killings by gangs more than doubled last year, according to the United Nations.
In late 2019 the Congo army began a campaign to eliminate the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF),
...the ADF is one of several murderous Moslem groups in NE Congo. In 2019 the U.S. Treasury Department imposed sanctions on them for the usual reasons. They don't appear to be affiliated with al-Qaeda or Islamic State, though ISIS claims their work from time to time — they just like killing infidels...
a Ugandan militia that has been operating in the vast country since the 1990s. The ADF has responded with a rash of retaliatory massacres of civilians.
"We are now preparing for the burial of our fallen compatriots. They were executed," said Jean Manzekele, the head of Kalembo village in North Kivu, 45 km southeast of Beni.
"We realized that it was the ADF because of the way they attacked. They were shouting loudly in a foreign language which was difficult to understand."
The army said it had secured the village and was pursuing the attackers, who also injured two people.
Violence in the three eastern provinces of Ituri, North Kivu and South Kivu has "become part of a systematic pattern to disrupt civilians’ lives, instil fear and create havoc," UNHCR front man Babar Baloch said in Geneva on Tuesday.
People displaced by previous attacks have been targeted, Baloch told news hounds.
"Attacks by gangs are carried out on the suspicion of collaboration with other groups or the Congolese security forces. Civilians find themselves trapped in the middle of confrontations between different groups."
While the army’s operations against militia groups are more successful than in the past, they lack the capacity to maintain control of the areas they secure, leaving space for gangs to return, Baloch said.
Islamic State ...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're really very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not really Moslems.... has grabbed credit for several suspected ADF attacks in the past, but U.N. experts in the region have found no direct link between the two groups.
[DhakaTribune] Indian court sentences Jahidul Islam Mizan - also known as Boma Mizan - to 29 years of prison for the Khagragarh blast of 2014.
An Indian court sentenced Jahidul Islam Mizan
...also sometimes known as Mohammed Jahidul Islam, he’s the Big Turban, the Number 1 of Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen India (JMI). When the organization was stood up in 2018, he reported directly to Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) Number 1 Salahuddin Salehin alias Hafizur Rahman Sheikh alias Mahin...
alias Kausar - also known as Boma Mizan - to 29 years of imprisonment for the Khagragarh blast of 2014.
Special NIA Judge Suvendu Samanta sentenced five years of imprisonment to Sheikh Kausar, on five counts and two years each for other offences, which he will have to serve consecutively. Kausar confessed before a court, and will also have to pay a fine of Rs 29,000 for his offences.
NIA counsel Shyamal Ghosh said that Kausar was convicted under various sections of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA), as he waged war against entities associated with the Indian government, the Foreigners Act and created conspiracies.
Links to Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh The JMB is said to be the youth front of Al Mujahideen, the parent organization that began working toward establishing Bangladesh as an Islamic state in the mid 1990s, which remains obscure and probably defunct today. Other organizations, such as Jama'atul Jihad, JMB, Jagrata Muslim Janata Bangladesh (JMJB), Harkat-ul-Jihad-al-Islami (HUJI), Hizbut Tawhid, Tawhidi Janata, Islami Jubo Shangha, Islami Shangha, Al Falah A'am Unnayan Shanstha and Shahadat-e al Hiqma are believed to be part of the Al Mujahideen network. The JMB at its peak was reported to contain at least 100,000 members, and an alleged 2,000-man suicide brigade, few of whom actually exploded. JMB allegedly received financial assistance from individual donors in Kuwait, UAE, Bahrain, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Libya. Reports have claimed that funding of JMB by international NGOs like Kuwait based Society of the Revival of Islamic Heritage (RIHS) and Doulatul Kuwait, Saudi Arabia based Al Haramaine Islamic Institute and Rabita Al Alam Al Islami, Qatar Charitable Society and UAE-based Al Fuzaira and Khairul Ansar Al Khairia. The top leadership of JMB was captured in 2005 and hung in 2007, which pretty much shot their bolt. (JMB), a well known terror group, were identified in the blast on October 2 2014.
India appears to be putting considerable energy against clearing old cases lately — or is it just that it takes this long to get cases to trial, and they’ve finally arrived?
Three suspected bad boyz were potted and injured while making kabooms and bombs at a rented residence in the Khagragarh area of the Bardhaman town in West Bengal.
Following Kausar’s sentencing, 31 out of the total 33 accused in the infamous case have been found guilty, and have subsequently been sentenced. The other two accused have escaped.
The preliminary charge sheet was filed in March 2015 by the NIA. It stated that there was a "conspiracy of JMB, a proscribed organization in Bangladesh, to overthrow the existing government in Bangladesh through violent mostly peaceful terrorist acts," reports the New Indian Express.
The investigation was initially taken over by the state CID, and was later transferred to the NIA within a couple of days.
or is it just that it takes this long to get cases to trial
Correct. And lookit the sentence. 5 years in a room with a TV, fridge and cot. And a fine worth one playstation 5 [$400]. I think the NIA should send him to b'desh where the chances of him actually being punished are greater.
